Amazon.com Essential Recording
Wish You Were Here is a song cycle dedicated to Pink Floyd's original frontman, Syd Barrett, who'd flamed out years before: two grimly funny songs about the evils of the music business ("By the way, which one's Pink?"), and two long, touching ones about the band's vanished friend. The real star of the show, though, is the production: sparkling, convoluted, designed to sound deeply oh-wow under the influence--and pretty great sober too--with David Gilmour getting lots of space for his most lyrical guitar playing ever. And, though the album is big and ambitious, even bombastic, it somehow dodges being pretentious--the Barrett tributes are honest and heartfelt, beneath all the grand gestures and stereophonic trickery. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
One of the many reasons I love Pink Floyd.......2007-06-13
For Pink Floyd, making a follow up album to 'Dark Side of the Moon' must have seemed an extremely daunting task. However with 'Wish You Were Here' they succeeded admirably. In his biography of the band, Nick Mason stated that they wanted to avoid simply making a sequel to the hugely successful predecessor and that they wanted to start afresh in a new musical direction. This decision resulted in a creation of true musical beauty.
The long, ambling and elegant opening track 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' was a new step even for Floyd. Both parts of this track have a relaxed yet compelling beauty that puts it right up there with the best the band has produced.
After the ethereal beauty of the opening track, the following two bring a far more sombre mood to proceedings. 'Welcome to the Machine' is a disgruntled sideswipe at the human condition which is somewhat reminiscent in lyrical content, of the track 'Time' on 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Hot on the heels of this is 'Have A Cigar', a pessimistic jibe at the music industry creeps that came out of the woodwork after their sudden shot to international success. Although these two tracks are far more downbeat, they are executed with a Floydian bite that makes them quality tracks.
Along with 'The Wall' and 'Dark Side of the Moon', this was one of the albums that defined Floyd and simply demands to be listened to.
Worthwhile.......2007-06-10
This is a good, but not a great album. Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, and Have a Cigar are all classic cuts and never get old. The Syd Barrett tribute songs Shine on You Crazy Diamond are a little weaker. Over all it's worth a tumble, but it's no Dark Side Of The Moon.
An Absolute Must.......2007-05-29
Probably the best Floyd CD. I had an earlier (non-digitally remastered) version of this album and found that this version is really a treat in comparison. As far as the music itself, every track is a classic and a must for any classic rock fan. If you don't own a good version this album, you need look no further.
Wish it was a little less drab.......2007-05-27
So Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is probably considered their third greatest album in the normal consensus behind Dark Side and The Wall. It's not "Animals" and "Obscured by Clouds" are better than this album but this one is still a fine one despite being only five songs long.
This one starts out with a classic of a song in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Beautiful, epic, pick your favorite cliche and use it here because this song has it all, even a saxophone solo at the end. It is later reprised at the end of the album this the first one is far superior. This song along with Wish You Were Here were written for former frontman Syd Barrett who even visited them in the studio during the recording, small world isn't it. Speaking of the title track it is an amazing song. But one thing it does that I love is that it is simple. Accoustic guitar with some great lyrics provides a nice sendoff to Mr. Barrett.
The one problem this album has is the two music industry rants from Roger Waters. "Welcome to the Machine" is atrocious and overlong. "Have A Cigar" is better but it's not even sung by a member of Pink Floyd.
Other than the rants this is a fine album. And for once a Pink Floyd album that seems to express hope, nostalgia and something more than just being depressed which is always a nice change of pace.
Wish I Had Discovered Sooner.......2007-05-27
Wish You Were Here is equally as superb as Dark Side of the Moon and serves as a sequel with an emotional feel and blues-based, melodic background centered by outstanding guitars. The use of sound effects that the band incorporated two years prior are as involved again and help to enhance the mood and vibrational feel of the music. With having to fulfill mammoth expectations in 1975 after an phenomenal album like Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd only broadened their musical horizons but played with the same passion to create another album that offers proof as to why they were, and still are, so highly regarded as innovators in rock music.

I was wishing for a better album.......2007-05-28
"STEADY PULL" is one of my favorite albums of the last 10 years or so. This is not quite in that league, but its still more engaging than her "circus" recording.
Her best album.......2007-05-20
It's hard to believe that after so many albums Jonatha Brooke would take a step up in material but this is a level above the others which were good to start with. The title cut is one of the best songs and singing performances of her career.
Another great record.......2007-04-20
It would seem from previous reviewers that you have either been a huge fan of Jonathas'since the days of the Story or you have never heard of the lady. Well I am in the former camp as I have all of her work and I rate this among her best. I do however notice a recent shift to more of an electric performance, as recently evinced by the Live in NY CD (not a bad thing)
The Cd kicks off with 3 great tracks and continues in that form utill the track in French........maybe I need to hear it more, and does not let up till the end.
A pure class CD and in these days of manufactured music such tallent in both songwriting and performance is indeed VERY rare
A must buy!!!!!!!!!!
Dramatic and superb.......2007-04-07
I've reviewed each of Jonatha's CDs and in the process have come to appreciate both the gentle beauty and the dramatic power of her delivery. This CD meets, even exceeds expectations, on all counts. Some reviewers have noted this may be her best studio effort ever and they may be right, which is high praise. The power of Hearsay, with its message about keeping and revealing secrets, features the best in songwriting and singing from this Dynamo. Matches "Linger" and several other of her signature electric songs. Then, with "Leave The Light On", we hear that sweet sound that, in the end, makes one want to come back to Jonatha and fall into her arms. Stunning song that matches "So Much Mine" or any of her mellow, acoustic beauties. Though they all say Jonatha Brooke, I love hearing different influences in the songs, with the high harmonies that go from British bands to the Beach Boys, and then the instrumentation, even the use of an oboe, makes each listen something special. Following so closely on the heels of the absolutely electric live CD and DVD, Jonatha Brooke proves to be a star with an incredible band who's limited only by her imagination. This CD helps me forget the Circus CD, which in my mind was a bomb. Why only 4 stars? It's not perfect. The song in French is a toss-away for those who don't speak the language, plus the music is nondescript. And Forgiven is too noisy. Crosses the line. I can't get through the song without forwarding to the next. But in summary, this CD is a winner, Jonatha Brooke is a superb talent and the only sad thing is that I don't see a Northeast Ohio visit on her touring calendar. Ugh!
And here's the thing...This album is stunning........2007-04-05
Great songwriting in the Elvis Costello/Aimee Mann school of wit and pop sophitication. The production is fun and stimulating. I would've thought Jon Brion was the producer of some of the tracks. If Aimee Mann's "Whatever" is one of your favorites, you must get this album. The title song is the stand-out track for me, one of those songs that will stand the test of time 50 years from now. "After The Tears" is another, the kind of song that comes along every 10 years.
I'm really enjoying this album.

Another brilliant set of obsessive musings pried from Robert Smith's fuzzy navel. Epic elegies ("From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea") and tuneful romps ("Friday I'm In Love") are classic Cure cuts--Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
A wish for an impossible thing.......2007-01-17
I got this album shortly after its release when I was newly 17 and I played it to death. It's a fantastic record; more in the vein of the newer modern-rock Cure stuff than the older punky Cure stuff, and it showcases the band's talent better than any of their previous recordings, in my opinion.
From the thickly layered opening track, Open, to the closing track, End, each song is a masterpiece. Unlike the punky earlier Cure, these tracks have a distinct feeling of volume to them - volume as in capacity, not loudness. They are all multiple-layered, and the arrangement comes across as almost orchestral which is a contrast to the Cure of the early 80s when the songs were all three minutes long and sounded similar. Make no mistake, this is classic Cure; but classic evolved Cure. Each incarnation of the Cure has its place, of course, but I do prefer this stuff. It is a fine mix of faster and slower tracks, from light to fairly dark material and the overall production and mix suits Robert Smith and Co perfectly.
The album yielded a few singles, the most well-known of which is the hit Friday I'm in Love. However, the true gems of the album are those which were not big singles - in particular, the almost-title track To Wish Impossible Things, which is an allegory to something, although whether it is a love lost or a life wasted or both or neither, I cannot be sure. However, hands down, my favourite track has got to be Doing the Unstuck, which is vintage Cure. Nobody does the same kind of trippy, bubbly, dizzy, mesmerising champagne happiness as the Cure do, and the track is reminiscent of Just Like Heaven and Hot Hot Hot in its arrangement. Those who appreciate guitar work will marvel at former strings man Porl Thomson's work-rate on this track, in particular if you can hear the live version from the album/dvd Show (which yes, you should most definitely buy as well!) during which he is unleashed on an old Stratocaster.
I think this was an excellent follow-through to Disintegration, the seminal late-80s album by the band, and it is by far my favourite of theirs. The album also appears in my Top 5 of all time.
The beginning of the end.......2006-11-23
It doesn't matter whether this album was a commercial album or not. The Cure was brilliant in the 80s and the sorrow one feels at their current state is in reference to that former brilliance. This was the first Cure CD that I bought when I finally learned to like them, and now I can't even listen to the thing.
Even though it has some great songs including "Friday I'm in Love" and "Elise" for the most part it's a dreary reworking of infinitely more brilliant songs. There are no songs that transcend the limitations like in the past. No "Killing an Arab", not even a "Kiss Me. Kiss Me. Kiss Me."
After this CD, the Cure would be a washed out group just playing the same tired melodies over the same tired lyrics, without focus and without sincerity. The Cure of the 1980s was dark and depressing with flashes of danceable pop to make all the crap seem somehow worth it. The Cure of the 90s should have just given it up before this CD.
But it's not a bad CD. It's just not a very good CD.
Stop wishing and go for it! .......2006-10-29
I enjoy The Cure, although, some of their records really bore me. The classics are always welcome, but some other tracks just don't do the job for me.
Well, I remember I first got in touch with The Cure because of this Wish album. Back then, I had it in Cassete tape. So after all these years, I heard Trust in a friend's house and I said " I just have to get this album on cd once again".
For me it's one of their best albums yet released and has a great ambience to it, really represents for me what The Cure stands for, that kind of ultra romantic goth punk sound...
So stop wishing impossible things and get this album in your collectios ASAP!
The logical successor to "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me"........2006-08-22
The album that thundered the Cure into the collective consciousness courtesy of pop charting single "Friday I'm in Love", "Wish" puts aside the brooding soundscapes of "Disintegration" to make a more logical successor to the diversity of "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me".
While "Wish" isn't as consistently satisfying as 'Kiss Me', it still proves to be a fine and startling diverse album, touching on frantic hard rock (the utterly superb "Cut", opener "Open"), early '70s Bowie ("A Letter to Elise"), atmospheric energy pieces (the frantic "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea", capped off with a fantastic guitar solo), patient meditations ("To Wish Impossible Things") and of course, the magnificent pop pieces, personified by jangly "Friday I'm in Love". In fact, there's precious little here NOT to like, the only real exception being the somewhat dull "Apart", but even that is quite listenable.
I'm of the opinion that the Cure have done better, but "Wish" is in its own right a powerful album, and is somewhat more accessible than a lot of the band's other catalog (having a well endeared pop song does that for you). Recommended.
Don't believe the naysayers.......2006-03-01
While this album is derided by many "real" Cure fans as being too "commercial", the truth is this album still mixes in plenty of moody sulkers amidst the flashier radio-friendly fare.
Are they happy? ("Friday I'm in Love","High") Are they sad? ("To Wish Impossible Things","Trust")Well, they're kinda both. This album swings to each extreme, but spends most of its time in the melancholy middle..hoping for better but expecting the same ("Apart","Cut","Open")
HIGHLIGHTS:
The giddy "Friday I'm in Love" is the most immediate track here and the one that continues to garner the most airplay. It's 3 1/2 minutes of perfect fizzy jangle pop. "A Letter to Elise" is the other radio hit that stands out amid the album. "Doing the Unstuck" is the unsung lost hit here. It's zippy pop much like "Friday I'm in Love" but with a darker edge as the "let's get happy" chorus gives way to Smith's REAL feelings at the coda: "it's a perfect day to throw back your head!..and kiss it all..good-bye". "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea" finds Smith caught in a relationship that's killing him but he can't get free. ("And just as I'm breaking free/She hangs herself in front of me/Slips her dress like a flag to the floor/And hands in the sky surrenders it all..") "Apart" is a languid lament of love gone sour. ("He wants to hear her say 'forgive'/but she just drops her pearl-black eyes/and prays to hear him say 'I love you'/but he tells no more lies")
LOWS:
Of the 12 tracks here, "Open" is one of the worst ways they could choose to lead off. "Wendy Time" is also rather unmemorable.
BOTTOM LINE:
Don't make this the first CD you buy from the band (I'd go with GALORE 1st then DISINTEGRATION) but after getting those 2, this would be a good 3rd purchase.
3 1/2 stars

Album matches content hype.......2007-05-31
I intially bought this album for a few selections I had heard from Classical 102.1 (KDFC-FM). I was pleasantly surprised that the entire album has a very satisfying collection of the greatest marches. I am very pleased with this album, and would recommend it for anyone who likes a broad range of famous marches.
Fun.......2007-01-21
This CD would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys marches. Some of the marches are popular, others are not. All are well-performed and can be enjoyed - LOUDLY!
invigorating!.......2006-12-05
Great recordings of stirring music. I like to play it loud while my kids and I clean house. It makes it go by fast.
Totally awesome!.......2005-03-27
My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do!

Perfect for Cinderalla Lovers.......2007-03-15
My daughter loves the Cinderella movie and this CD is perfect. It has all the main songs and instumental music from the movie. There are also some additional songs not from the movie on the second half of the CD. Whenever we listen to this CD it's almost like watching the movie. Anyone who has kids that love the movie will also love this.

Can anyone tell me if there are lyrics to the song "So This is Love" on this CD. I am looking for a CD that has the lyrics as well as the music to this song.

What a delight to finally hear the rich background music and much of the dialogue from this Disney masterpiece on one compact disk! Long awaited to be released on DVD from the Disney vaults, this entertaining CD companion piece to the new DVD has been certainly worth the wait. Ilene Woods, as Cinderella, has one of the warmest, most expressive voices you'll ever want to hear! All the voices are well cast, and the incidental music is evocative of a more innocent time and place. In addition, some deleted tunes, a Jim Brickman song, and an updated version of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" are included, stretching the audience appeal of this disk. Listeners of all ages will truly believe that if you wish and try hard enough, your heart's dream can come true!

Excellent, but one missing..........2007-03-07
These are fabulous marches played with huge amounts of zest, but one of Fiedler's best RCA marches - the Zacatecas March - was left out!!! Why??? There would have been plenty of room, and it seems to be available on a Japanese release - why not this one?
Otherwise, no hesitation at all.
Simply a Fun Set of Marches.......2003-10-18
In the 5th grade, I tried out for Little League. My desire to play baseball was not rooted in any love for the sport. I thought my father wanted me to play a sport. I was so great at the tryouts; he said some memorable words to me. "Tim, I think you ought to stick with playing the clarinet." I am sure he was trying to spare me humiliation on the athletic field. Little did he know he was starting my love affair with music, a far greater gift.
Perhaps because I was in the school band, I gravitated toward marches, and this collection of marches conducted by Arthur Fielder was one of the first recordings I purchased (6th or 7th grade I believe). At the time (the mid 1970's) it was only available on LP. As soon as the CD was available, I purchased it for nostalgic reasons. This collection had many popular marches such as the Grand March from Aida, Stars and Stripes Forever, Pomp and Circumstance, as well as some lesser known marches. This was one of the collections that piqued my interest in orchestral music. Though the marches could probably best be termed "light classical," it was an introduction to more serious music. Many years later I used this same recording when I taught as background music during art or spelling lessons. Again, it served as an introduction to more serious music.
This is not a complicated set; it is simply a little jewel that is a joy to listen to and a fun addition to a music collection.
Great Marching Music.......2000-11-14
Even though I am a Yankee I still love "Dixie." This is great music for pre-school children and those just entering school. I think it helps build character. I like this album.
Great.......1999-05-23
I have had this tape for years and it just got torn, so I have to replace it immediately because my granddaughter, age 3, also loves it.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
R.L. Burnside's background is pure Mississippi Delta--he was raised in the hill country and musically trained by quintessential bluesmen like Fred McDowell. But this record, like all his work, is infused with an adventurous spirit, haunted by eerie bits of electronic music and dark, despondent subject matter. The combination sounds irresistibly fresh, and scary as a hellhound on your trail. --Matthew Cooke
Amazon.com
Imagine a man sitting on a weathered front porch in a rocking chair, telling stories as the sun goes down. As first, they seem like the old-time tales any grandfather might tell, but as the sun sets, they take on a chilling, uneasy edge. That's the effect of R.L. Burnside's fifth album for Fat Possum; it's unnerving, at times downright spooky. Many will wonder if the digital effects featured on 1998's Come On In are here as well. Yes, they are, but less obviously. While electronics and DJ scratches are part of "Got Messed Up," their inclusion is subtle, like unearthly noises heard after dark a thousand miles from anywhere. Though there are some upbeat moments on this album, such as the uptempo "Miss Maybelle" and the satirical "Nothin' Man," for the most part this is the particular brand of Mississippi blues that Burnside and the lateJunior Kimbrough have done so well: mournful, even somewhat bleak, with every sense of hellhounds on the trail. Indeed, as the track "R.L.'s Story" indicates, Burnside's got his own demons; bonus tracks aside, this makes a perfect closing track, a last tale before the children are shooed off to bed. Forget Martha Stewart; this is Halloween music. --Genevieve Williams

Wish I was In Heaven Sitting Down.......2007-02-26
I discovered RL Burnside thanks to Sirius Radio. I have purchased 2 of his CD's and have been pleasantly surprised with both. Great music.I plan to buy all or at least most of his CD's in the near future.
Forget the Stones Listen to Burnside.......2006-02-24
When "Big Daddy" died last year, Mississippi and the nation lost another national treasure. Listening to this CD I'm amazed by the dedication to moving the blues foreward Burnside had, even in his final days. By contrast, I'm equally amazed by the lack of a sense of a new direction by the big name groups who are putting out watered down versions of the same things they have been doing for years. If you want a treat look into the Burnside Exploration, two of "Big Daddy's" grandsons, their blues power duo of guitar and drum was "doing it" before anyone ever heard of the White Stripes. I hope they can chart a path to the future as bright as their grandfather's.
Why didn't I find him sooner?.......2004-05-19
RL Burnside is awesome! When I heard one of his songs on Accuradio.com, a streaming internet radio site and I was hooked. I thought, "I gotta get my hands on that CD!" When I arived home, I couldn't wait to play it. I cranked the volume up loud and had a lil' jam fest! I loved the way he incorporated hip-hop beats with his soulful blues sound! I will definitely be buying more of his albums in the future!
I like it!.......2003-12-10
I love some of the sound effects that were added to this recording though Fat Possum added 3 bonus tracks done without remixing to try and satisfy everyone no doubt. "Chain of Fools" especially is a must-hear with the rapper effects. On my copy, however, "Black Mattie" (the first bonus track), starts over a minute into the track. Do I have a defective copy or is it supposed to be this way?
A Really "UP" Blues Album (read the review).......2002-12-08
Stood absolutely still, riveted to attention when I first heard this CD. Next step was to find the sales clerk so I could buy it!! It is an understatement to say R.L. Burnside sings with emotion, this man KNOWS BLUES, he has LIVEDBLUES, and STILL HAS HOPE ... tinged with an Alabama accent, he sings with a southern drawl, full of the realities of life. The liner booklet says it best (& I quote): "The last genuine performer of raw Mississippi hill country sounds as well as cutting edge crossover artist the blues has had in the past 30 years." Honesty, depth, detail, raw emotions, earthy statements: it's all here & more! Great lyrics, great slide guitar playing, too. "Too Many Ups" one of the tracks, is a play on words: "You gotta look UP to the man ... too many ups, too many ups, too many upside down", "You gotta cover up", "You gotta catch up", "You gotta get paid up", "Too many upside downs". Some other favorites are, the title song, "Wish I was in Heaven Sittin' Down", "Hard Times", and "Chain of Fools".
Let the lyrics of "Nothin' Man" tell his story:
"I never had a chance ... it never was MY fault. You can't arrest me. I pay the rent. I never wanted to be a BAAAAD person. I wish my mama had loved me. You can't arrest me. It never was MY fault ... I never wanted to be a BAD person." The ambient music contrasts nicely with the words & lyrics, with a shadow of the underside of life - not far off from the truth. This is genuine, visceral music: FAT POSSUM RECORDS have provided us a vehicle to enjoy the music of this living legend of Mississippi blues. They have a great sense of humor, too. Inside the CD is a card to fill out with demographics, and a block of space, with the instructions: "trace your housekey here" YOU GOTTA LOVE 'EM!
Three "bonus" tracks are included: "Black Mattie" by Robert Balfour (a rather scarry piece of music & lyrics, too), "Pucker Up Buttercup" by Paul Jones, & my favorite of the three, "Laugh to Keep from Cryin'" written & sung by Burnside's adopted son, Kenny Brown, a great talent in his own right who learned & apprenticed with this MASTER OF MISSISSIPPI BLUES, THE LIVING LEGEND! Chris Botti +First Wish".......2007-05-07
I just loved it - am a jazz fanatic - and I think that Chris Botti is just a magnificent musician
Starting his style.......2006-11-03
The world famous trumpet player at his first tones, the sound that will remain the same, but will result more mature in the latest recordings. Relaxin' style, uncomparable creation of soft and cool ambients.
A truly gifted composer and player. GREAT music........2000-03-26
Botti is as gifted a composer as he is a trumpet player. As a composer, Botti reaches real, heartfelt depth. The pieces on First Wish, Midnight..., and Slowing Down the World are an interesting and original blend of rockish ballads, mellow funk, and blues-ish soul that no other modern trumpet player is even close to accomplishing. The occasional background guitars are vaguely reminiscint of U2's guitar work, yet completely original, and the piano is very well mixed with Botti's horn playing. I love ALL his CDs, and I'm glad I don't have to pick just one.
As a player, Botti is very clean and accurate, yet always soulful. His truly artful phrasing, with occasional glides and bends, is perfect - never gimicky, always heartfelt and masterful - just right.
On a side note, the ladies always respond VERY well to all of Botti's music on a date. Slow dancing is a very easy sell with Botti's ballads playing. That alone says a lot about the affect Botti's music has, but Botti's music can have some real talented groove to it too. I hope this player can create 100 CDs. I'll own them all.
Stunning debut by today's hotest trumpeter.......1999-12-23
This is one of the best instrumental (mostly) albums I've heard. Botti has such great tone and control. I saw him open for Fourplay in Monterey a while back, and have bought every thing by him. This is the best in my opinion
Smooth and Transcending.......1999-11-09
I love this CD. I couldn't make up my mind on which Chris Botti CD I should buy next. I bought First Wish based on the review regarding the person waiting in his car for over an hour to see who the artist was playing on the radio. I was not disappointed. I love track 2, On the Night Ride, track 4, Like I Do Now, and track 6, Cubism. The whole CD is fantastic.
I have been listening to Chris Botti's Caught soundtrack since seeing the movie in late 1996. I love that CD also.

Album Description
Top of the British Classical Charts for 10 Weeks! Billboard Top Ten Classical Recording - December 2002! This album gathers together most of the carols I have composed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a program which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own-in fact my first two published compositions were the Nativity Carol and the Shepherd's Pipe Carol. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years- JOHN RUTTER
Customer Reviews:
Rutter Christmas Album.......2007-05-14
Great selection of music, and well presented. This is however older recordings that do not match the quality of Rutter's latest recordings such as the Te Deum or the Gloria.
Unique and Beautiful!.......2007-03-09
John Rutter, and his beautiful music, is such a gift to the world. This unique Christmas CD is magnificent! Especially touching are two of Rutter's original carols, "Christmas Lullaby" and the joyful "Angels' Carol." The musical selections speak to the soul, helping the listener connect to emotions of joy, peace, faith, hope, and love. This is a worthy addition to your collection of Christmas CDs.
Johh Rutter Chirstmas Album.......2007-02-19
If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.
Liked it enough to go through a lot of trouble to give it a review........2007-02-07
Great music by John Rutter: Great performance!

This is quintessential English cathedral music; beautifully sung. Reminds one of the English Christmas -- warm and serene -- that we've only experienced in our dreams!

Amazing.......2007-05-15
I recieved this CD from a friend, and immediately fell in love with it. The Afters are mostly pop, although they can rock out as well. The good songs and lyrics are consistent throughout the CD, and the fact that they are Christian are a plus. I was a tad dissapointed they didn't portray that aspect of their music more in their advertising, although it's eminent in the actual CD.
I recommend this to anyone and everyone who enjoys good pop/rock/punk music - especially Christians! I can't wait for their next CD.
Typical music, but good words.......2007-03-01
This CD came into my hands a couple of years ago when it was just out. I skimmed through it, shrugged and passed it along to a friend. Now, as I've gotten it again and listened to it thoroughly, I still find myself mostly less than impressed. But there are some good things about the CD that I didn't catch the first time around.
The main thing with this CD is that the musical style is completely devoid of originality. Track after track plays through, each one sounding just like every mainstream rock band. The progressions all happen just as expected - there's the A-level uptempo song, the B-level uptempo song, the requisite funky track, the uplifting ballad, the sad sounding song, the synth-y slow number at the end. Verse one, chorus, verse two, chorus, bridge, chorus with a cool effect, chorus. The second verse of the uptempo numbers is always a little more rhythmic and acoustic-sounding with a catchier beat. There are a few well-placed minor dominant chords, the lead singer (admittedly good) tries to sound like Switchfoot, and all that stuff. It's very obvious that they've been influenced by all the mainstream Christian rock bands, and they won't be the ones to break out of any rut we might be in by now. It worked for lots of other bands - The Afters is just one too many. Bottom line: the musical style is so yawningly predictable you'll go right to sleep.
Now for the good things about it. The choruses are memorable, and unlike the music, the lyrics are not worn out. The words are uplifting and (for the most part) doctrinally sound. There's a lot of fresh imagery and insight that you'll be chewing on for a while. "The Way You Are," for example, draws breathless pictures of the paradox of the glorious God living in the hearts of his sinful creations. For this reason, the "I Wish We All Could Win" is worth listening to, if only for the edgy, trtuth-filled choruses that you'll be singing long after this CD is on a shelf.
One truly stellar song on this album is the ninth track, "Wait." I don't know why it's not at the end of the CD. (After "Wait" comes an anticlimactic finish from a so-so number, doctrinally a bit questionable, that really belongs in the middle of the album.) Not only does "Wait" break the musical mold with some pretty, soft classical-style guitar picking as the only backdrop for the vocals on the first verse and chorus, but the song itself is amazing. It's a faith and wonder-filled look forward to the mysteries of God's glory that await us when we join Him in heaven. This is a "quiet time song," for those of you who know that jargon :), and it's worth buying on iTunes even if you don't get the CD. It almost makes it worth buying the CD.
Bottom line on "I Wish We All Could Win": Don't buy it for the music. If you don't care about the stagnant musical arrangements, it might be a good CD to pick up because of the words. And if you're into The Afters' mild rock style, you'll like it despite the lack of any musical surprises. Do buy "Wait." That song is as uplifting as MercyMe's standard "I Can Only Imagine," and the words are more original and moving. "The Way You Are" is worth getting, too. As for the rest of the album, the choruses are sometimes catchy and the words are sometimes good. It'd at least be worth popping in your brother's copy for a listen.
Sorry for being different but I think everyone here is hyping this up..........2007-02-03
...to be something it's not. The only tracks that I found catchy was their song from 8th and Ocean "Beautiful Love" and "You". The rest of the CD is forgetable and bored me. So stay away!!
Not recommended.

i've got this cd 2 days ago, and i all ready want to trhow it away, the lyrics are so boring, the music in general is too repetitive, ths guitar riffs are so amateur, i rather hearing other christian bands like underoath (IT'S EMO !!! for those who say they're heavy metal, actually heavy metal is far away from EMO) hope you guys don't get desillusionated by buying this cd, cuz actually it stinks !!!
