Free your mind.......2006-11-26
Tons of greatness.......2006-05-31
4.5 stars - A solid debut album.......2005-04-09
Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke rose to fame as classic rock superstars as a part of the rock supergroup, Bad Company, in the mid-late seventies. However, Bad Company wasn't the only band those two rock and roll geniuses ever belonged to. Before their supergroup days, the two belonged to a lesser-known classic rock outfit called Free. Alongside Rodgers and Kirke was a guitar mastermind named Paul Kossoff. Although Free was an excellent group, they achieved no popularity or success whatsoever outside of their 1970 hit single All Right Now. In 1968, the band released its first album, Tons Of Sobs. Read on for my review.
When you listen to this album, you'll notice that the band has a hard blues rock sound, similar to that of the legendary power trio Cream. Another thing that's easy to notice is that this is a very good album! Why these guys never achieved the same level of success that Cream did is beyond me, because these guys had musical skills light years ahead of many of their contemporaries. If you've listnened to any Bad Company album, you already know that Paul Rodgers is a killer vocalist and that Simon Kirke does percussion better than most. And on this album, you'll get to hear younger versions of them who have equal talent. It's interesting to hear what these guys sounded like before their days of fame. Why doesn't anybody appreciate this band?
Sadly, this album (as well as (probably) the rest of the Free catalogue) is out of print in America on CD (as of September 22, 2004.) Fortunately, there is a solution. The album (as well as Free's other albums) have been reissued in other countries! These versions even have bonus tracks! I am very impressed with these reissues, and if you look on some CD stores that sell imports or eBay, you're sure to come across them eventually.
Free was an excellent band, and it's a shame that they never really got the credit that they should have. There's really not much else I can say, except for that this is a very good album, and if you're a fan of classic rock, you really should add it to your CD collection.
Tons of Great!!.......2004-09-21
Comme çi, comme ça.......2003-09-02
There are some really fine songs here, most notably "I'm A Mover", "Walk In My Shadow" and Free's rendition of the Albert King-classic "The Hunter". But the slow, bleak folk-blues "Moonshine" takes itself way too seriously, and several performances are indistinct and unfocused, lacking structure (and melody, too, to be honest).
If you're a serious Free fan you probably already own this album. (or you're planning to buy it again because of the bonus cuts).
If you're not - don't buy it. It's not a bad record, certainly not, but virtually every good song on "Tons Of Sobs" can be found on the excellent double-disc "Molten Gold - The Free Anthology".
That one collects almost every Free song of note, and you really won't miss very much even if that's the only Free CD you ever buy.

Blues rock at its best..........2004-04-05
Years After, Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown, Jeff Beck Group). Nada mal para un grupo de adolescentes.
A must have for a lovers of heavy blues rock........2002-04-07
indeed one of those.
The musicians make a good team, Paul Rodgers' voice is certainly one of those bests with a unique carchter and with balance of both intensity and grey despair. Paul Kossof's fiery lead guitar work makes a brilliant bridge between blues and heavy rock riffs. He is certainly not mentioned often enough when talking about guitarists. Simon Kirk the drummer plays vividly and concerned. He is doing more than giving just a rythm. Drums on this album is felt as an
instrument with dynamics and tonality, played both softly or intensively. Andy Fraser too, does more than making standard bass lines.
Because the audio quality is better than albums in general made in 1968 the bass is more clear and just not a diffuse bottom tone maker. Yes the audio is actually surprisingly superb. It does not say whether my version of the album is remixed or remastered or not so I guess they used a clever way of recording. And if it would be
listened at in a remixed or remastered version, don't know if there is any as such, then the audio would fool anyone to believe that the album was not made in 68 but rather in 88 !
If you haven't heard of Tons of sobs then do. Although, in order to enjoy it's heavyness you need speakers with better size rather than made for todays standards, made up just for wimpy pop music.
My favs are tracks: #2-Worry, #3-walk in my shadow, #6-I'm a mover, #7-The hunter, #9-Sweet tooth.
An incredible debut.......2002-01-11
