The American debut from highly respected sideman and bandleader Jon Cleary is a welcome treat. Though the pianist hails from the United Kingdom, he's spent considerable time in New Orleans, and it shows; Moonburn is packed full of Big Easy blues with a healthy seasoning of jazz and soul. There's enough smoke in Cleary's vocals to mark him as a veteran, as if his impressive list of side projects (he's recorded with Johnny Adams, Taj Mahal, Maria Muldaur, Junior Wells, and B.B. King, among others) weren't enough, and his piano playing has that quality of easy smoothness that takes years to achieve. Whether he's rocking out with "Unnecessarily Mercenary" or the wildly uptempo "Gettin' Crazy Up in Here" or slowing things down with "Heavy Under Pressure" or "Port Street Blues," Cleary is firmly in control. One hopes that we'll hear more solo work from this impressive pianist. --Genevieve Williams

I've never been moved to write a review before, but this.... this is the thing. Not a duff track, not a duff note. The piano playing alone will make you choke it's so beautiful. And the band, and Cleary's voice, and the production, oh just buy it for heaven's sake

Heard Jon at a Bonnie Raitt concert and thought he was terrific. This CD, however, was nothing like what I heard in concert.

you have never heard so much funk generated by 4 guys! brilliant and, at the same time, probably at risk of getting caught in the grey spaces between blues and R&B and gospel and funk and rock. which is ok with me -- as long as i can keep walking easily into their gigs. my worry is that they will not be sufficiently discovered, and they will not be able to produce enough cd's to fill my craving! cleary and his band are in high demand as studio musicians with folks like raitt and taj mahal... buy their cd ASAP so we can keep them together long enough to pump out some more of this awesome and unique music! i got really luck and stumbled into the maple leaf in new orleans after a long day at jazz fest and jammed with cleary and the monsters 'til early the next morning. bought their cd immediately and i'm now at risk of needing to buy another copy since mine is wearing out. yesterday, saw them again with bonnie raitt sitting in on a few songs. this is KILLER music, people. there is something for everyone on this album. i'm ready for the next one!

I don't know if I went more than a week without listening to this disk for the 6 months I spent in Kenya. I captures my home and my favorite city completely. From blues to R&B to gospel to funk, it's all on this CD. It may be cliche, but this disk is quintessential. I don't know if it's because Cleary doesn't take things for granted (not being a native), or it's a matter of his finding his true home, but whatever it is IT WORKS!

It's a testament to Hollywood's desire--nay, need--to complicate things that Cole Porter's 1934 show Anything Goes made it to the screen twice (20 years apart), both times with Bing Crosby as the male lead. For this 1956 version, the plot was rewritten, three Sammy Cahn/Johnny van Heusen tunes were added, and "It's De-Lovely" was brought in from another Porter show (1936's Red, Hot and Blue!). As a bonus, this CD adds three non-Porter songs written for Crosby in the 1936 film version. Confused yet? In any case, this soundtrack may leave Porter fans frustrated but will delight those who enjoy the finger-snapping arrangements customarily found in 1950s Hollywood musicals. The inventivity of the brass section on the title track, for instance, actually eclipses Mitzi Gaynor's perky vocals. As for "I Get a Kick Out of You," between Jeanmaire's French-accented reading and the insane brass section going into overdrive, it's a camp delight. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Anything Goes (1956) Film Sound-track available again!.......2005-04-23

This album was originally issued in the UK on the Brunswick Label, back in 1956. It was deleted in the early 1960s. It is marvellous to be able to obtain it again some 40 years later!

The quality is very good and it is an excellent bonus to have three tracks from the 1936 movie, included - especially the excellent Sailor Beware. The quality here is also remarkably good.

It should be noted that not all of the tracks are recorded directly from the soundtrack of the 1956 movie. In particular You're the Top appears to be a studio recording with Bing and Mitzi Gaynor. I seem to recall in the movie the song was sung concurrently by Bing/Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O'Connor/Jeanmaire in two different rehersal locations whilst on board ship. None the less the performance and quality is excellent - A most enjoyable CD especially for Crosby/O'Connor/Gaynor fans and good value at the price.

Wouldn't it be marvellous if this movie could be released on DVD, together with "The Birds and The Bees" - another of Mitzy Gaynor's rarely seen Paramount Technicolor comedy musicals? By the way the same sets are used in both films. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and Zizi Jeanmaire sing superbly.......2004-02-10

This reissue of the 1956 ANYTHING GOES soundtrack from Decca Broadway is a real find. Although quite inferior to basically every other cast album of AG, it still features some great vocal performances from Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor and the stunning Zizi Jeanmaire.

Highlights include Mitzi Gaynor's peppy, energetic rendition of the Title Song; Zizi Jeanmaire's all-out performance of "I Get a Kick Out of You" and Bing Crosby's beguiling croon of "All Through the Night".

Though the curious quartet version of "Blow Gabriel Blow" is strange indeed (the number works better as a solo), and the just plain-embarrassing "Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke" and "A Second-Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball" are two more missteps.

Added as bonus tracks are 3 numbers from the 1936 film version of ANYTHING GOES with Bing Crosby (though these particular numbers were not written by Cole Porter, thank God).

Worth buying if only for the wonderful Zizi Jeanmaire. [DECCA BROADWAY B0001933-02]

1 out of 5 stars For Bing Crosby fans only........2004-01-28

Decca's album of songs from the 1956 Paramount film ANYTHING GOES has always been a hashed up affair, and the decision to release it on CD is curious, to say the least.

The film was not well recieved when it was released and for many years it was a staple of afternoon TV movie shows.

Using the title and five songs from Cole Porter's Broadway hit, plus Porter's "It's DeLovely," Three new songs were needed, and instead of asking Porter, Paramount used Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn who contributed "Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke" "You can Bounce Right Back";and "A Second Hand Turban and a Crystal Ball." Never heard of these songs? With good reason...they are all terrible!

This is not even a true "soundtrack" album. Several songs were re-recorded in the studio. So instead of hearing "You're the Top" as performed in the film by all 4 stars, we get a cute studio arrangement for Bing Crosby and Mitzi Gaynor.

There are so many fine recordings of the stage production of ANYTHING GOES that this album is of little use unless you happen to be a Bing Crosby fan.

      5 out of 5 stars A Modern Classic.......2001-07-12

I believe that Becky Kilgore is, right now, THE leading interpreter of the popular American song. A few years ago I found her, by mistake, on a California Swing Cats album led by Hal Smith. She is a throwback to the great female vocalists of the Big Band era, and once you've heard her, you can't get enough. This is perhaps her best recording to date, but I don't know of any bad ones. Did I say she has a voice to die for? Yeah, I guess I did.

5 out of 5 stars Great Moments Indeed.......2001-05-10

Rebecca Kilgore is one of the best jazz singers to emerge in the last ten years, and has quietly created a catalogue of great albums. "Moments Like This" is another one to add to her impressive list, and may be the best yet! This time, she records with her "regular" trio from Portland, Oregon and demonstrates just how a singer can be bluesy and sentimental at the same time, and swing to boot, abetted by superb, complex but never overbearing, accompaniment. Her lovely warm voice recalls Peggy Lee, the jazz side of Doris Day, and occasionally Blossom Dearie and Susannah McCorkle, but is unquestionably individual. She breathes new life into chestnuts like "Dream" and "This Can't be Love," as well as finding "newer"obscure gems, including "Summer Song" by Dave Brubeck, & Herb Ellis's, "I Told You I Love Ya." If you like jazz and "classic pop" vocals, you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Portland's Secret Is No More.......2000-09-07

Rebecca Kilgore, perhaps the best-kept secret in current female jazz singing, records on this CD with Randy Porter, Neil Masson and Scott Steed, the musicians who regularly accompany her in Portland, Oregon. The 16-tune result will remind you at times of Chris Connor, Anita O'Day, June Christy or perhaps even Peggy Lee -- and then you'll realize it is none of them. It's Rebecca Kilgore, a solid performer in her own right, presenting both familiar and not-so-familiar songs you won't forget. Becky has had some hits on the Arbors label, but this hometown recording is as good or better. Thanks, Portland, for sharing your secret.
