About the Artist
Abandon Jalopy Bio
by Rick Smith Rock and roll dreams are incredibly volatile, sometimes taking years to forge but only a few moments to shatter. Brad Smith was a small town boy who caught the same fever that was gripping his entire generation: the burning desire to be a rock and roll musician. He would eventually hitch his wagon to a shooting star that burned too brightly for this world, and would watch his dreams come to fruition and then slip away. Smith had his modest beginnings in 1968 in the small, rural Mississippi town of West Point. During his childhood he split his time between his mothers house, his grandmothers (known as Big Mama from the song Instead) and yes, he also spent some quality time with his father in the trailer park made infamous by the song Speed Bumps. His memories from this time are mostly fond, learning life lessons and the value of hard work from his family. He was soon introduced to the classic rock of the seventies by his mother and uncle, and forsook his private-school status as Mr. Oak Hill Academy for the trappings of a rock and roll life. He and his childhood friend Rogers Stevens began cobbling together a garage band as they dreamed of making it on the world stage. After a year of college, Smith and Stevens decided to pack up their belongings and head for the promised land of stardom that was Los Angeles, California. Upon arriving, the brothers-in-arms set about working in construction and trying to keep their heads above water. They quickly learned the rules of the mean streets, a saga chronicled in the song Slow Down Good Times. They soon hooked up with a talented guitarist named Christopher Thorn and their old friend drummer Glen Graham, and began making music. Their fate was later sealed as they were joined by a vocalist named Shannon Hoon and formed the band Blind Melon. The story of Blind Melon is by now well documented. Their first album was carried to quadruple-platinum status on the strength of a simple song called No Rain and its quirky video starring the charming, dancing bee girl. World tours soon followed along with monetary success and fame. The pressures of that life took their toll on Hoon, however, and on October 21, 1995, just after their second album Soup was released, Shannon Hoon was found dead of a drug overdose in New Orleans. The bands tour came to a grinding halt, and there were very few pieces left to pick up. The remaining band members eventually put together an album of previously unreleased songs entitled Nico, the name of Hoons surviving daughter, and dedicated the proceeds to her. The death of Shannon Hoon had a profound effect on the life of Brad Smith. I was so used to touring and making music with my friends, and then it was just over with, Smith says. His life stood still for six months after the tragedy, even though his perspective remained pragmatic. When asked, he ultimately places responsibility for Shannons death on Hoons own shoulders. I was right there on that same tour bus with everybody else, and I made better decisions than he did, he says about the friend he sorely misses. Devastated, drained, and grieving for his lost band mate, Smith retreated to his Seattle home and his in-house recording studio, Stank Face Laboratories. He spent several years working on the songs that would become the Mercy solo album, and found that writing and composing provided him with much-needed therapy after such an emotional upheaval. When the album was ready to record he called in Christopher Thorn to produce. Smith took turns playing most of the instruments, and invited a few friends in to play some other tracks, including On the Blink and Stompin the Fuse, on which he reunites with his former Blind Melon members. Once finished, he dubbed his solo project with the name Abandon Jalopy. Some of the songs on Mercy directly examine his feelings towards Hoons death. Stompin the Fu

These clean-cut Chicagoans were unrepentantly commercial popsters whose wholesomely catchy, horn-laced '60s hits retain their bubblegum charm three decades after the fact. The 18 track Mercy, Mercy, Mercy is an exemplary best-of disc, collecting all of the group's major hits, i.e. "Kind of A Drag," "Don't You Care," "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)," and "Susan." Meanwhile, less familiar numbers like covers of Lloyd Price's "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," the Beatles' "I Call Your Name," and a vocal interpretation of the Cannonball Adderley jazz tune that provides the collection's title suggest that there was more substance to the band than its squeaky-clean hits let on. --Scott Schinder

+1/2 -- Chicago '60s garage-soul goes pop.......2007-05-08
This Chicago rock 'n' soul outfit broke out with their single "Kind of a Drag" for the independent USA label. A superb debut album was rushed out, and the band quickly found itself signed to Columbia. The major label groomed and remolded the band, retaining their horn-powered sound, but adding string arrangements and tighter production that dissipated their garage edge. Where the horns on the debut added a sweaty, soulful punch, their major label work (increasingly controlled by producer James Guercio, who'd later strike it rich with Chicago) was softer and more calculated.
Still, they had an impressive string of hits throughout 1967, including a sly vocal version of Cannonball Adderly's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," and three more from in-house songwriter, Jim Holvay. "Don't You Care" and "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)" continued the horn-and-organ grooves found on "Kind of a Drag," and "Susan" added an unusual psych-out in the middle of its Association-meets-the-Rascals vocals. By the start of 1968 the band's commercial fortunes had cooled, by mid-year they were frozen, and two years later the group would disband. Still, they recorded some nice sides in '69 and '70, applying their sun dappled pop-soul sound to catchy material like "It's a Beautiful Day (for Lovin')" and breaking away slightly for the hippie-country "I Got a Feelin'" and the singer-songwritery ballad "You."
This 18 track compilation includes five tracks from the band's USA debut ("Kind of a Drag," "I've Been Wrong Before," "I'll Go Crazy," "I Call Your Name," "Makin' Up & Breakin' Up"), plus hits and album tracks from their Columbia catalog. There's some continuity between the two periods, but the more polite drumming and manicured horns of the later material loses the energy of the debut. This is a fair representation of the band's career, but those who love the earlier material should also pick up Sundazed's reissue of the debut LP. 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. Surprising.......2007-02-16
I was really surprised at the sound of this one. I thought this sound was gone forever. The Buckinghams had a unique sound that no one else can capture. Love the Lead singer voice. This one is a must buy. It was a pleasure to listen to. The harmonizing is still the best I have ever heard.

60's pop group, title cut was biggest hit.......2007-01-10
I got the CD because my band was playing Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, and I wanted to demonstrate a contrast to the well known Cannonball Adderly version. I recommend the CD to fans of 60's rock 'n roll, you may have forgotten some of their hits, but they were a fun band to listen to.
Interesting history of Chicago brass.......2007-01-06
The liner notes are worth the price. Not all tunes are great but you get an interesting look at the evolution of brass rock from Chicago.
Great Memories.......2006-11-06
This cd brought back great memories! If you've ever gotten a chill whenever you've heard the first strains of "Kind of a Drag", this cd will bring it all back to you-it features all of the great hits that I remember from this rocking band of the 60's.

Recycling the 1980s sound has been in vogue lately, so it's no surprise that the producing team known as Nouvelle Vague would find yet another way to mine the nostalgia for the early `80s, post-punk era. They're doing it bossa nova style.
The disc opens with a rendition of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." It's a charming start, and with a breathy chanteuse on vocals, it's exactly the kind of sound that has some music critics proclaiming (admittedly with a touch of sarcasm) that Nouvelle Vague is the ironic dinner music for the new millennium. Unfortunately, this CD is somewhat less winning as it wears on. "Guns of Brixton" is annoying when done in a loungey mood, and sitting through "Too Drunk to F**k" in the wrong company could certainly ruin the amuse bouche. Nevertheless, the entertaining tracks do outweigh tiresome ones on this release. If this concept sounds like an interesting idea to you, you're bound to get a smile from the execution. --Leah Weathersby

Lounge with spunk.......2007-07-08
Or is it punk? Anyway I've got a weak spot for lounge music and this may best, edgiest lounge you'll ever hear. Frankly, I'm not all that familiar with most of the originals so I have no idea how much they've been maimed here. All I know is that the vocals are inspired and impossible to ignore.
In Love With This Album!.......2007-06-07
I absolutely LOVE this album! I listen to many different genres of music but I have to say that this album is one of my ultimate favorite cd's! I don't get tired of listening to it! I'm so glad I was introduced to Nouvelle Vague and I have shared this cd with many friend of mine...I then recently purchased their second album Bande A Part, but I was disappointed however, it's not nearly as good as their first...I love 80's music, Bossa Nova, AND Nu Wave, definetly recommend this cd!
Brilliantly different..........2007-04-15
First time through this distinctly "left field" album is likely to leave you a bit confused... laid back interpretations of classic 80's rock tracks served up as nonchalant, bossa-nova driven Anglo-French lounge music. Ridiculous? Well, fortunately not, because in here are some absolute gems - so good that once you've locked into what's going on you'll find them completely irresistible. Which ones depends on where you were at the time but, for me, "Teenage Kicks", "Love Will Tear Us Apart", "We're Only Making Plans for Nigel" & "Just Can't Get Enough" are so beautifully structured and darkly exciting that they're worth the price of the album on its own. But, as you'll see from the other reviews, there's a lot more on offer. Sure, some tracks miss it... but most don't and, insidious and clever, they add up to a brilliant, very different and probably unrepeatable "one off".
Relaxing AND Catchy!.......2007-04-10
Well .... this album combines two of the better qualities I like in a CD. Nouvelle Vague is relaxing -- and extremely catchy! 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' sets the tone from the very beginning ... the comfortable bossa nova rhythm leads to a chorus I found myself whistling along with ... while Nouvellle Vague's catchy take on 'Just Can't Get Enough' had me humming along. I mentioned in another review that I'm not too familiar with the 70s/80s originals ... and because of that I find that this album of covers is a stand-alone, especially for those that are fans of rhythmic bossa nova, samba, and jazz. For me, every song on this album is strong ... As a picky and eccentric listener, this is one of the few times I can play through an entire album and never have to skip a track. It doesn't mean that I don't have favorites on this album -- 'Marian' was the reason I decided to buy the CD. I bought this CD with Bande a Part, because there were several songs on that CD that I felt compliment this one ... but this CD, Nouvelle Vague, is the stronger of two excellent CDs.
Mixed bag gives bossa nova swing to olde inde faves.......2007-01-23
This outing from the cover band Novelle Vague satisfies immensely in many ways, and just plain misses in others. If you are an old timmer who grew up on the originals (like me) then you may find this newly vamped bossa nova approach to 80s post-punk staples a fun filled romp down nostalgia lane. It isn't for everyone, though, and a word of caution to those of you who are missing out by not having heard the originals (all brilliant in their own right) first. The often covered Joy Division classic, "Love Will Tear Us Apart," gives us a warmer rendition than the bleak original, but not better, just different. Of stellar mention is their fun, catchy cover of the DK's hc classic "Too Drunk to..." and the Clash's London-calling era ska-soaked "Guns of Brixton." I will also add that their cover of the insufferably boring "This is not a Love Song" (of disco-era post-Pistols Johnny Rotten PIL fame) gets a great face lift...upwards: Simply awesome!! On the other hand, Nouvelle Vague miss almost entirely on the gothic realm, as best evidenced by their butchering of Andrew Eldritch's "Marian" (off the Sisters of Mercy's first LP, "First and Last and Always") and with their mediocre quickening of The Cure's "A Forest" (which seems to be popular in covering, especially with the techno / rave crowd). Overall this is a good buy, but it does have a couple renditions that deserve a quick skip with a toggle of the fast forward button. A better NV effort is showcased in their "Bande A Part" LP, where they do a fantastic cover of the power-punk-pop classic "Ever Fallen in Love," a former Buzzcocks masterpiece. 4 stars for effort and originality.

A spark of redemption illuminates even the darker songs on Mercy Now, the fourth album by Mary Gauthier (pronounced "go-shay"). The influence of her native Louisiana pervades her Southern Gothic songcraft, which first won an audience in the folk clubs of Boston. After a series of releases on independent labels, her Lost Highway debut seems destined to expand that audience significantly. Within her mature, weather-beaten artistry, Dylanesque metaphysics go to Mardi Gras on "Wheel Inside the Wheel"; the naked emotion and eye for detail of "Your Sister Cried" and "Empty Spaces" conjure comparisons with Lucinda Williams; and the plainspoken "I Drink" and "Drop in a Bucket" have the bittersweet bite of the best of John Prine. The spare arrangements of producer/guitarist Gurf Morlix, punctuated by cello, organ, and harmonica, give the material plenty of room to breathe. Gauthier's vocals are half-spoken, half-sung, and all soul. --Don McLeese

Amazing.......2007-07-03
Exactly what I wanted to say has already been said: "I have to give Bob Dylan and his XM Satellite Radio show a big Thank You for leading me to Mary Gauthier. On Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour which focused on booze, he played "I Drink" from Mercy Now. I was sold. There's not much more to say than has already been said. Great songs, great voice, great CD."
All I will add is she must be amazing in a live performance!!

These are all great emotional, introspective songs. I cannot recommend this album enough. Mary has a twang but somehow I can't imagine these songs without it. Only one song doesn't feel like it was written by a person with values sympathetic to mine. Mercy Now, Wheel Inside a Wheel (about Mardi Gras from a Cajun perspective) and I Drink will be classics.
Rodrigo(Valencia-SPAIN)
great discovery.......2006-09-30
I was listening to XM Cross Country. A song really caught my ear. I looked to see who was singing. I even wrote down the name when I stopped, so I would be sure to remember. I just bought Mary's album and every song is great. She has emotion and feeling in every word. She has a new fan.

The '80s was a particularly shifting, uncertain decade for Bob Dylan's creative voice. But he capped it off with his first album of all-original material in several years and his best since Infidels. A lot of the credit for Oh Mercy's distinctive appeal has been given to producer/musician Daniel Lanois (who backs Dylan on all but one cut), and there's no denying the effect of his magnetic, fog-thick sound sculpturing here. Overlays of lap steel, dobro, and mercy keys along with a slithering subterranean bass evoke a complete sonic climate, and the synergy between Lanois and Dylan would have a huge payoff with 1997's devastating Time out of Mind. But however tightly produced, Oh Mercy also displays Dylan at the peak of his songwriting craft, fracturing words and phrases for the things-fall-apart jeremiads of "Political World" and "Everything is Broken" and stringing images together for the noirish ballad "Man in the Long Black Coat." There's the usual dichotomy between Dylan's slashing accusatory mode ("What Was It You Wanted") and the self-effacement of "What Good Am I?" Aside from the miscalculated, sappy "Where Teardrops Fall" (the disc's sore thumb), this album has the classic staying power of Dylan's finest efforts. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Bob Dylan: Oh Mercy.......2007-06-26
Oh Mercy is not my favorite Bob Dylan album, but it was for a while, right after I first got it--and I already had 20+ Dylan albums by that point. After letting myself cool off about it a bit, I think I can now analyze what I liked so much about it. The whole thing is good, and Daniel Lanois gives it a production that is not so much good as *consistent*: the whole album is of one sound. If I had to sum up the sound, I'd say it's 'murky.' Lanois is a former producer of 80's U2 albums, and that's very much what this album sounds like. My point is that Oh Mercy has a continuity to it and really works well as a whole album.
Nonetheless, it is possible to pick out the highlights. The reason for my original infatuation with this album comes down to just two songs: "Man In The Long Black Coat," which has some of the best and most intriguing imagery Dylan has ever conjured from that mind of his, and "Most Of The Time," a straight-up Dylan classic on which he uses his typical style of ending each verse with the same line (usually the title line) and taking the listener along as the profound meaning of that line is further brought out by each verse. ANY Dylan fan needs to own both of these songs, and I've never seen either one on a compilation--"Political World" and "Ring Them Bells" (both good songs) have been more likely to get anthologized. For these two songs alone, the purchase of Oh Mercy is well worth it.
However, as I said before, the album sets a mood and you will enjoy the whole thing. Even lyrical low points like "Disease of Conceit" are enjoyable in the context of the entire album.
Tuneful and stirring.......2007-05-01
Produced by Daniel Lanois, this graceful work was Dylan's final statement of the 1980s. The uptempo Political World delivers a profound message over an urgent rolling rhythm whilst the poignant Where Teardrops Fall is melancholy and uplifting at the same time, very much like Leonard Cohen.
Since this album was released in 1989, the song Everything Is Broken now seems to be prophetic and truer than ever. The arrangement stands out, as well as the impressive instrumental textures. With its appealing organ touches, the slow song Ring Them Bells has an anthemic quality and gospel undertones.
The atmospheric story-song Man In The Long Black Coat is followed by the introspective Most Of The Time, a reflection upon lost love and lingering memories. What Good Am I is similarly sad and reflective with thought-provoking lyrics, and the same goes for Disease Of Conceit.
I love the appearance of the harmonica on some of the songs like Shooting Star; it reminds me of his legendary 1960s work. With its heavenly melodies, evocative imagery and inspired production by Lanois, Oh Mercy is Dylan at his very best.

WISH I'D BOUGHT IT IN '89.......2007-02-25
I kinda lost track of Bob after the SAVED album came out. I had EVERY album he made prior to SAVED.
Then recently after reading "Down The Highway" by Howard Sounes, I went out and bought OH MERCY and a buncha the later albums. This one was at the bottom of the pile of 5 Dylans that I bought. I decided to play it last night as there was nuthin' much a-happenin....and MAN......I nearly fell out of my computer chair. This was like the OLD Bobby DYLAN from "New Morning" and that era. It blew my socks off. I've been listening to it continuously now. Lanios got a real good sound going here. Call me crazy, but as far as I'm concerned FIVE STARS.
Good Dylan, but a tad overrated...........2006-08-11
I know I'm in the minority here when I say this is a good, but not great, album. It's certainly better than Dylan's previous 2 albums (Knocked Out Loaded and Down in the Groove), but I always found the album wanting. The songs are way too short, for one thing. There's really only one lengthy track on the whole album, What Was It You Wanted?. While the album has great songs (Political World, Everything is Broken, Man in the Long Black Coat), it just doesn't have that epic quality that many Dylan albums have. Luckily, he reteamed with producer Daniel Lanois later for a real Dylan masterpiece, Time Out of Mind.
Smoothed out for easy digestion, but still ok.......2006-05-31
The production is pretty lush for a Dylan album. Maybe too lush for most. I like the tunes though, I'd like to hear a [...] kickin' live version of "Everything is Broken." I bought this on vinyl (!) but only recently got the CD version. I'm glad I did. It's a keeper.

"Live at 'The Club'" boasts the cover of this 1966 album. Of course, this turned out to be a lie, as did the entirety of the original liner notes. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy was not recorded at that Chicago venue, but instead at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. (The ruse was a favor to the club owner.) The hollering audience was comprised of invited guests and stimulated by free booze. Still, their enthusiasm is definitely well warranted, as alto man Cannonball Adderley and his band offer a riveting blend of postbop calisthenics and soul-jazz grooves. Joe Zawinul's famous title track, with its hypnotic, gospel-drenched funkiness, was a crossover top 10 pop hit, as well as an astonishing exercise in restraint for Zawinul, who somehow resists the urge to dig in on his electric piano, instead opting for a deep, mellow mood. The rest of the album cooks, with Cannonball, brother Nat on cornet, and Zawinul supplying the heat. --Marc Greilsamer

Performed in front of a studio crowd plyed with free drinks, Cannonball and company (Nat, Joe Zawinul, Victor Gaskin & Roy McCurdy) play six funky songs. First Cannonball speaks to the crowd, then the band gets in the groove. The groove is a strength and weakness of the album, with the exception of the title track, the songs don't stand out very strongly from each other. The title track has the most interesting songwriting, though the fact that it was a crossover hit surprises me. It's very good, though. The playing is all top-notch, too.
One of my best cds.......2005-12-30
The title track "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," alone, is enough reason to buy this album. This recording captures the electricity of this particular show to the extent that the listener may at points truly get a feeling like they're sitting in the room with the band.
Serious fun.......2005-06-30
This is hard bop at its essence. It's funky, fun, exciting, and most of all it's emotionally-charged. I tend to find myself driving to it a lot.
Although the first two tracks are titled "Fun" and "Games," there's a slightly dark edge to some of the soloing here, a bit of that mystery that makes the music of Miles Davis so compelling and captivating. Perhaps that's what makes this music so exciting. It's frequently on the edge of chaos, but never quite tips over into "free" jazz.
Zawinul really takes the spotlight on the title track, with a great spoken intro by Cannonball. This track is pure soul-drenched simplicity. Genius. Let this album be the light that guides you into jazz.
Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.......2004-08-23
Let me just tell you, this is about as exciting as it gets! The recording actually feels like it took place at a famous jazz club on a summer night, but as everyone knows by now, this wasn't so, and it was recorded in Capitol studios. This album finds the quintet at the top of its game, this time featuring Cannonball, his brother Nat on cornet, the spectacular Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Of the six exciting numbers, I'd have to say that "Games" is my favorite, another great example of how amazingly underrated Nat was as a composer. The title track has this after-hours mood that you won't be able to find anywhere else. Whenever you're down about something, just put on that track, and I guarantee it will help you deal with whatever your problem is. You can't possibly call yourself a jazz or Cannonball fan and not own this magnificent album, so order it now!

Classic Debut.......2007-07-16
4 1/2 stars.
It's not to say that Slayer didn't have a unique sound, but for points of reference I would say that this sounds like a cross between Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" and Venom's "Welcome to Hell". Like the former, the album is extremely catchy without sounding the least bit commercial. I'd say this was due to the fact that they were clearly influenced by NWOBHM which often has that same attribute. The album is also quite dark like "Welcome to Hell" but it is less tongue-in-cheek and they avoid the silly (not an insult) "fun" songs that Venom likes to throw in every once in a while. Both the guitarwork and drumming are amazing. Although technically challenging to a good degree, they make sure to focus more on quality songwriting than showing off. Also, the vocals are among the best among Slayer albums. They're less angry than later on and a bit raspier. Even if he's not technically a "good" singer by the traditional standards that your high school music teacher followed, the vocals are very fitting particularly because of the obvious Venom influence, plus he does the style well. The album is not the band's lyrical peak, but the lyrics are decent. They don't come off as honest or as brutal as on albums like "South of Heaven" and "Christ Illusion", but at the same time they don't totally wallow in the pseudo-Satanic cheese that was so popular at the time. Okay, maybe there's just a hint of that. The lyrics also occasionally deviate from the norm (how many bands have written about crionics?). Anyways, I would say this is one of the best debut albums of the 1980's thrash scene. It's not as brutal as "Reign in Blood" nor as complex as "Hell Awaits" and the sound is slightly dated, but it has it's place and I can't imagine a serious metal freak not greatly enjoying this album.
Also, there is no metal band that could be called more definitive in regards to underground metal. If you have a friend interested in learning about true, influential metal, this is the band to point them to although they should start with "Reign in Blood".
My Slayer album ranking:
Reign in Blood ***** (1)
South of Heaven *****
Hell Awaits ****1/2
Show No Mercy ****1/2
Live - Decade of Aggression ****1/2
Seasons in the Abyss ****1/2
Christ Illusion ****
Haunting the Chapel **** (2)
God Hates Us All ***1/2 (3)
Divine Intervention ***1/2 (4)
Undisputed Attitude ***1/2
Diabolus in Musica ***
(1) My all-time favorite metal album.
(2) I know it's blasphemy to rank "Christ Illusion" higher than "Haunting the Chapel" but I only do so because of the length. I've never understood EP's.
(3) It has poor lyrics and I liked "Bloodline" better when it was called "Gemini", but it's still underrated.
(4) I used to hate it, but it grew on me.
The One that Started it All.......2007-04-03
I originally got this through Columbia House in August 1996 after I had become a fan through the purchases of Reign In Blood and Seasons In The Abyss. Whereas Venom's Welcome To Hell was a poorly-recorded debut full of metallers who could not play to save their lives, Slayer's Show No Mercy is a poorly recorded debut of metallers who could play. That doesn't change the fact that this album is not one of the great debuts of metal but like Venom's debut it is an album that does carry some merit and enjoyment. Not the essential first purchase but not a waste of time or money either.
Slayer's debut album.......2006-07-23
In 1981, a band out of Southern California known as "Dragonslayer" was formed by singer/bassist Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King. A drummer, Dave Lombardo, was quickly found, and Jeff Hanneman was brought in as a second guitarist later into 1981. Most of their music at this time was influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that was sweeping through the world during the early 1980s, but after attending a Metallica concert in 1982, they were hell bent on playing harder and faster than said band and shortened their name to Slayer. By 1983, they were already signed to Metal Blade Records and released their debut album, Show No Mercy. How did it turn out? Read on for my review.
Well, this album is very different than all of the Slayer albums that succeeded it, because Slayer was still in transition between their NWOBHM roots and the extreme thrash powerhouse they would eventually become. Many of the tempos are modest compared to their later releases and Tom Araya shows off a very wide vocal style (all the way from low-pitch growls to Halford-like schreeches). However, look away from some of the things the band were still growing out of during this timeframe, and you'll find one of Slayer's best releases.
Many of the songs on this album remain classic live staples to this day (Antichrist, Die by the Sword, Black Magic), while others sound like they came straight from a Judas Priest record (Cryonics, Tormentor). I love all the variety on this album, from the progressive monster that is Metal Storm/Face The Slayer (my fave off the album) to the adrenaline-fueled tital track.
Overall, if you are a NWOBHM fan and a thrash metal fan, or a Slayer fan looking to round out your collection, you need to buy this album! It's still one of their best albums!
Old, but good!!.......2006-07-15
I've been searching for this item everywhere!! I found it on Amazon.com and I was delighted to see it. This album is Slayers first, and it is one of the best!! If you like fast riffs, killer solos and just pure insanity, then you should definitely pick up your own copy today!!!
its not their fault...........2006-07-10
that they sucked back then, it was their first cd, so i see why...get diabolus in musica, its way better, slayer rocks, killswitch are the gods of metal. peace....

This is "THE" Alternitive rock record from the mid 80's. relaxed smokey beat with deep solemm lyrics.....
Best Album Ever.......2007-01-03
I consider this to be the best album produced by Sisters of Mercy. It reatures a lot of songs popular in the club scene and is a must own for any fan!
Floodland.......2006-11-19
Floodland...there is only one! If you haven't heard it, if you haven't felt the power of Dominion/Mother Russia, or This Corrosion, where have you been! Floodland will rush in, powerful, unstoppable, "like a million voices", like a dumdum bullet. Experience from the masters a sound countless bands have tried to copy, but not even the Sisters could duplicate. If you like pure power, captivating rhythm, raw emotion, tune in, turn it up...loud, and hold on. I wish there were more Floodlands, more Corrosion, like the wind ripping through your hair, like blasting down a country road on your biggest, badest, loudest Harley, like "a healing hand" in the dark of the night, but no, there is only one Floodland...enter here!

Andrew's Musical Breakthrough.......2006-10-19
Floodland is a very lovely album, period. I simply love it. The album's gorgeous opening track, "Dominion/Mother Russia" begins with a very catchy and evocative drum beat and guitar lines. The sax that comes in around the middle of the song could have ruined it, but pulls back just in time. "Flood 1" has similar energy, the beat pounds heavily and slow, perfectly matching Eldritch's hypnotic chant and is offset by the high keyboard notes that provide the song's melody. "Lucretia My Reflection" at first chugs along like the others, but steps up the tempo a notch then rocks the guitars and synth. "1959" is a slow, pretty piano driven composition that unfortunately is the mournful low point of the album. It just isn't as catchy or fun as the rest and is the track I am most likely to skip. "This Corrosion" is an ambitious work incorporating a soaring choir and some catchy hand-clap beats and keyboard work that sounds great but does start to drag on toward the end. After all, you can only repeat "Hey now, hey now now, sing this Corrosion to me," so many times before it starts to lose whatever meaning it suggests to the listener. It should definitely be heard, though a lot of people won't like it in the long run because of the length and slightly cheesy direction of the song. At this point I should say that Floodland is the sort of album that at times feels over-thought and over-produced. The term "Self indulgent" probably describes it best. But (and it is a large BUT) the great songs are really, truly great. "Flood I" and "Flood II" are both moody works that perfectly exemplify what I love about the 80's experimental 'underground.' The terrific "Driven like the Snow" is subdued and brilliant, quiet and sad, and cold but beautiful; kinda like winter. This music is great for driving through orange-lit nighttime city streets and always reminds me of the gray England sky. This kind of slow, heavy-yet-not-loud pop/goth/post-punk rock envisions darkened clouds bursting forth with cold rain, or, in the case of "Driven Like the Snow," (my favorite song) riding through an empty country lane at midnight in the dead of winter; silent but for the barely audible fall of snow while thinking about something forever lost. A lovely, delightful album for those who are into that sort of thing. And many aren't, I know, but I like it a bunch. Five stars.
floodland.......2006-08-28
the pouring rain. the great rusty railroad investing the huge dark city with its looming machines, alive with a soul of their own, their silhouettes frightening. the sky rips in several places from which, the lightning seeps, outlining the graceful form of a woman. she stands on the highest of the city's towers.
behind her, a throne of steel an rusted rivets, her flamboyant dress a red light amidst the gray and black. one gaze at her pale face and the city's roar fades; the rain pounds with no more sound. the mind is flooded with thoughts of power and
dominion, nothing makes sense but that distant pale face. will she be yours?
dream on, boy...

Between 50 Cent's fearless bravado, Lloyd Banks's lispy lyrical proclamations, and the Southern drawl of Young Buck, the G-Unit's buzz factor alone have placed them atop the rap game. Their debut, Beg for Mercy, demonstrates how they plan on staying there. Their secret? No throwaway beats, keep the thugs happy. The sheer range and diversity of head-nodding beats--supplied by everyone from Hi-Tek and Dr. Dre to 7th EMP (who shrewdly samples Bach)--makes you forget their rather linear range of subject matter. Yep, the G-Unit is obsessed with violence and guns, but death threats never sounded so good. On "My Buddy," for instance, they cleverly describe in no uncertain terms how they feed this buddy--with bullets--and why they take him on family outings. Gunshot sound effects included. For some balance, the crew tries to disprove any theories that they're all about shootouts: Banks serenades a hottie on "Smile" while R&B crooner Joe drops by on the souled-out "Wanna Get to Know You" to prove that thugs need love too. It all makes for one of 2003's best releases. --Dalton Higgins

Not only does this stupid POS adore Atreyu, Slipknot, D4L, and G-Unit; he says Slayer and Kreator are jokes. Virushan, you're a poser with a horrid taste in music, stop playing with Corey Taylor's trouser snake and get a life.
Now to this, this is one of the worst rap albums from one of the worst rap groups of all time. Just think 50 Cent multiplied by four, thats how bad this is.
Want good rap? Go for Public Enemy, Ice T, KRS-One, and the Beastie Boys.
Virushan is a stupid mallcore kid with no life or friends.

IMPRESSED.......2007-05-21
AS A FIRST TIME BUYER AT AMAZON,I AM IMPRESSED AT THE QUALITY OF CD AND TIME OF SERVICE
St. Paul's Cathedral ImpressiveCollection of Anglican Hymns.......2007-01-24
St. Paul's Cathdral is the second largest cathedral church in the basilican style, exceeded only by St. Peter's Rome. New York City's St. John the Divine is larger than St. Paul's, but with decidely gothic elements. All three cathedrals have fine choirs, but St. Paul's and St. John's continue the noble and unique sound of boys and men in the English tradition. St. Paul's great organ is one of the world's finest, with a decay of seven seconds. The great hymns are all here, conducted by John Scott, only recently appointed organist of St. Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City. This is a recording will a be prized addition to your library of choral music. You will not be disappointed.
Excellent Cathedral Organ & Choral .......2006-02-24
This selection of recordings by The Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral contains pieces representative of traditional Anglican musical liturgy. The technical aspects of this production on compact disk seem to be outstanding, but beware that the original recordings were in some cases less than stellar. Another reviewer points out that on some tracks the lyrics sung by the choir are overwhelmed by the superb organ playing, which no doubt occurred due to inadequate microphone placement during the recording sessions. That said, I nevertheless rate this presentation of the St. Paul's Choir highly. It provides a mixture of musical types. In addition to the choir, the CD presents the work of four organists, including a marvelous organ solo, as well as several pieces sung a cappella by the choir and its boy treble soloists. I especially recommend this choir's rendetion of Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere," which features the voices of two boy trebles, a boy alto and a bass, which yeilds a mesmerizing experience. Unless one is acquiring full sets of the St. Paul's Choir's music, this compact disk should delight anyone interested in traditional cathedral organ and choral music.
LACK OF DICTION?!!!.......2003-11-12
Obviously the individual who wrote the review including the "marred by lack of diction" remark is not too familiar with the traditional boychoir sound. I am moved to sickness that they were so openly compared with the sound of the all-too-familiar MTC. THOSE WERE ADULTS!!! These are boys! Boys cannot give the kind of sound of the MTC because their voices are not developed enough. The greatest hope a boychoir has of wowing audiences is in their contrast in dynamics. They model this beautiffully in their acapella pieces. In their accompanied pieces, I feel they hold their own above the (sometimes blearing) organ.
Know the genre a little better before you slander a great performance.
Marred by lack of diction.......2003-04-22
The singing is beautiful, melodious and full of harmony. The organ would make Bach proud.
But the lyrics do not stand out. In fact, they are obliterated by the surrounding melodies.
I hate to do this, but I am comparing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. These little boys would learn from them.
It is a pity that these grand lyrics should be obscured by inept singing by a choir of young boys and men.

You'll find your faith again............2004-12-10
The movie was outstanding, the soundtrack just as good. Steve Martin stars as a burned-out charlatan evangelist who comes to a town that hasn't had rain in a long time. Martin finds his own faith throught the course of the plot. You'll find yours just listening to the soundtrack. The CD opens up with Don Henley's "You better sit down" which surprisingly made the charts. Patti Labelle and Edwin Hawkin's "Are you ready for a Miracle" was probably the most stunning piece of the whole album, but all the music is upbeat and heartening. One minus was the instrumental music was not included.
Disappointing, but contains some gems.......2004-10-31
Disappointing, mostly because this CD contains different (and inferior) versions of many of the songs in the movie. Nevertheless, it contains a couple of gems. In particular, the Patti Labelle version of "Are You Ready for a Miracle" is so powerful that one listen could make Osama fall on his knees and praise Jesus.
The Incidental Music Is Not On This CD.......2004-03-21
Like the other reviewer of March 2000, I was hoping that the exceedingly beautiful background music would be included, but it wasn't and I don't know why. Not everyone loves Gospel. I am not religious, and I'll listen to Gospel music in a movie, but I certainly won't listen to it on purpose!
The best music in this movie which I watched a dozen times just to hear it is near the end when the rains finally come to the parched, drought-forever town. It simply gives you goose pimples. This CD is like the score to "The Horse Whisperer", if you're not careful (like me) you ended up with nothing but country singing, not knowing there was a 2nd CD made with Thomas Newman's spectacular score! The producers of movie score CD's should know there's two types of customers: those who like songs and others who like just the instrumental background music. They lose the latter market if they don't pay attention.
Never thought I would like Gospel music!.......2003-12-13
Excellent CD to go along with an excellent movie.
Great Gospel Soundtrack.......2003-04-08
This is a rare occasion that Hollywood would put out a movie with a great gospel soundtrack. If you haven't seen the film, you're missing out on a special treat. It's about a man who loses faith and finds it again. Hollywood has the ability to make good films, but they only come around once in a while. I believe that any old-fashioned Christian will really enjoy this soundtrack. It's the best fun you can have of this quality. It's quality comes from the talent of Cliff Eidelman who composes works for 'Alien Trilogy,' 'Free Willy 3,' 'Star Trek VI,' 'A Simple Twist of Fate,' and 'My Girl 2.'
'Change in My Life' sung by John Pagano, has been recorded by artists "Rockapella." You remember the Maxwell House guys from their album, 'Don't Tell Me You Do.' An uplifting song that will bring joy and hope to the broken hearted. It's soulful melody and smooth rhythms will rock you away to Heaven. Meat Loaf who stars in the movie and sings 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light.' Others to compliment the album are the talents of Don Henley (The Eagles), Patti LaBelle, in her best guest appearance and Wynnona Judd. Rounding it out is Jazz scene's own George Duke. And, Black Gospel's top lady Albertina Walker singing 'Blessed Assurance.' The most exciting of the film at the end when the rains come and the people are celebrating. It just puts the Holy Spirit all through you. Cliff Eidelman does a great job of putting this soundtrack together. You can check out more of his work in, 'Now and Then' and 'One True Thing.' If you like more of great gospel music done by top artists may I suggest 'The Apostle-[Sountrack]' from the film starring Robert Duvall. I just know you'll be changed after hearing this.
