Customer Reviews:
Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19
I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.
great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07
Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.
Supurb.......2007-03-08
This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.
Amazing!.......2007-02-24
This is a very good soundtrack to a very good movie. The music is amazingly composed and is nice to listen to.
excellent.......2007-01-17
This CD is excellent! All the music from the movie in its entirety, all the songs are complete songs, and the songs are all top notch compositions.

Best Covers Album Ever with One Sensuous Gem.......2007-01-11
This is Siouxsie and the Banshees best album next to the stunning "Kaleidoscope". Who cares if it's a covers album?, all of it sounds like the Banshees' own stuff anyway. Although songs on the album like "This Wheel's On Fire" and "Hall of Mirrors" are great, the one song that defines this album is the smoldering, sexy, Eastern-tinged "Trust in Me". It is a cover of a song from Walt Disney's "The Jungle Book", sung by a talking boa constrictor (Perfect for Siouxsie!). Siouxsie purrs and growls her way through it, and when she says to "shut your eyes and trust in me", you'd better do that and more! Even though Siouxsie can do this kind of thing in her sleep by now, "Trust in Me" is one of Siouxsie and the Banshees' best song, second only to "Paradise Place".
A haunting album.......2006-05-18
The first time i had heard this album I was totally oblivious it was a covers album. It really sounds like all original stuff she wrote for a particular album. It's not disjointed like some covers albums can be, it sounds like a coherent solid original album. Yea, i heard siouxsie's passenger before iggy pop's which may seem strange to some people but we are all introduced to music at different stages and times. (Was surprised to find the true meaning of the song "Strange Fruit", originally sung by Billie Holliday regarding the lynching of slaves) This album has a unique and haunting sound. I believe it to be the best of Siouxsie's.
step through.......2006-05-02
in general, im not a huge covers fan. so initially, the idea of a strictly covers album didnt interest me. but since i liked the covers of "dear prudence" on hyaena and "helter skelter" on the scream, and was also experiencing a renewed obsession with the banshees, i purchased looking glass and its now one of the most frequently played and valued cds in my collection.
with remarkable integrity, the band respectfully maintains the feel of each original artist while infusing their own distinguishable sound, and with fantastic results. if you dont recognize some of the titles, you will find the sparks, the doors, television, roxy music, kraftwerk and others reinterpreted here. considering the diversity of the source material it works amazingly well as an album, providing refreshing transitions without sounding disconnected.
there are a few particularly unexpected and rewarding moments on this cd that deserve mentioning: "trust in me" for one, which was culled from the disney movie jungle book, is outstanding and pleasantly surprising. "hall of mirrors" is another, with one of kraftwerks robotic innovations receiving an invigorating boost of energy. and billie holiday is absolutely BLOWN away, musically as well as vocally, with a truly shivering adaptation of "strange fruit." only siouxsie could have improved upon this "classic", and in my opinion actually make it listenable.
the rest of the cd is equally engaging. if youre a fan of the banshees, you wont be disappointed. and if you have eclectic musical tastes with nostalgic yearnings for the past, youll be positively thrilled.
Me too.......2005-07-05
It's criminal and typical that Siouxie's cover of "Trust in Me" isn't well known. It's one of the all-time great covers. The remainder of this album is excellent and her choice of faves (and these are her faves) is surprising and fun--especially the Sparks tune which she does fabulously. Listen to the samples if you haven't heard her astounding voice and delivery and pray for the day you encounter her perfectly off-pitch creepy-as-heck vocals in the song "Israel" or the glorious tune "Dazzle." One of the great vocal talents in pop and stupidly underappreciated.
Surely one of the all-time best cover albums!.......2005-05-17
The song choices are really surprising for Siouxsie and the Banshees and they all turned out fantastic. What makes them so good, aside from the talented musicians involved, is the creative way these songs are reimagined.
My impressions:
"This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us" (The Sparks) - a propulsive, runaway roller-coaster of a song augmented with fantastic orchestration.
"Hall of Mirrors" (Kraftwerk) - bubbling, mechanical, yet infused with soul courtesy of Siouxsie. Great lyrics.
"Trust in Me" (Richard and Robert Sherman - from the JUNGLEBOOK movie) - one of the most sensuous, slow-burning recordings ever with heavenly harps. Absolutely hypnotic.
"This Wheel's On Fire" (Bob Dylan) - shocking reinvention of the last track of Bob Dylan's BASEMENT TAPES album recorded with the Band. Much more upbeat than the original with wild orchestral accompanyment. A complicated version, this must have been challenging to record, but it's positively dazzling.
"Strange Fruit" (Lewis Allen - sung by Billie Holliday) - you gotta admit, it took guts for Siouxsie to cover a song sung by one of the most acclaimed vocalists of all time. This is a harrowing protest song against the lynching of blacks in the old South. Predictably, Siouxsie's voice doesn't compare to the lush, creepy delivery found on Lady Day's version but she holds her own with a valiant effort. The song is fleshed out with windy atmospherics and a melancholy violin.
"You're Lost Little Girl" (The Doors) - becomes almost a celebratory march in the hands of S&B augmented by orchestra and chiming bells.
"The Passenger" (Iggy Pop) - great horn section, great attitude from Siouxsie. In some more just alternate reality, this song is a huge hit.
"Gun" (John Cale) - a really fun song - the only one on here in which I haven't heard the original, so I can't compare the two. Never-the-less, I find this cover to be an absolute blast!
"Sea Breezes" (Roxy Music) - One of my absolute favorites from Siouxsie and co. The original is strange and experimental. S&B turn it into a dreamy, mysterious wonderland with an intense climax courtesy of some powerful drum rolling from Budgie.
"Little Johnny Jewel" (Television) - another favorite. The original is quirky and loaded with prickly guitars. By comparison, S&B practically turn it into a pop song that is totally infectious. I never heard the original until the MARQUEE MOON re-release which featured bonus tracks including this single, Television's first ever release. "Little Johnny Jewel" was originally a strange affair, stretched out over two sides of a single, heard in its entirety on the expanded album. It's a classic record, very highly recommended.

The Best!.......2006-06-25
Great album from these AOR stalwarts. The covers are top notch like the playing. Lukather shines here, especially on Sunshine of Your love and While my guitar Gently Weeps. Worth the price of the CD alone. Steve Porcaro adds a much needed touch of class to the recording, showing us why he should never of left the band. His touch has surely been missed since. All in all, a worthy exercise and a very entertaining diversion.
Rocking Backwards.......2006-06-17
TOTO's 2002 release made up of non-original tracks reminds me of White Queen in Carol's Through The Looking Glass who live in reversed time sequence. Probably they wanted to do something peculiar not any of music fans might have expected.
To be honest, I think whether you can enjoy this album depends upon how deep are were into 70s rock. Some are familiar tracks and others may not. Among them Herbie hancock's classic MAIDEN VOYAGE/BUTTERFLY is excellently cared and you may enjoy whether or not you know the original. My personal favorite is BODHISATTVA one of my favorite STEELY DAN tracks and I am glad TOTO chose that track for this release. Beatles track WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS sounds close to original and Bobby Kimball did quite good vocal performance. BURN DOWN THE MISSION also is quite a nice choice giving great respect to ELTON JOHN one of my favorite artists.
Verdict: NOT regular release but still enjoyable

Through the Looking Glass - a Tribute.......2006-06-06
Toto's "Through the Looking Glass" is a great album that should be listened to by every Toto fan. As a professional musician, I've often thought that it would be neat to put together a collection of those artists/composers who influenced me. Every musician has had several, from classical to jazz to pop - someone who has inspired them in their musical development. I think it very admirable that they decided to put an album like this together.
Of the tunes that I am familiar with, Toto has done an amazing job of keeping to the original artist's style, yet modernizing and making it their own at the same time. George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" has been arranged as a power ballad, opening with some keyboard sequencing and ending with a heart-felt, guitar solo. The tribute to Herbie Hancock's classic "Maiden Voyage/Butterfly" is simply stellar - again, a modern sound that any contemporary jazz station would be proud to play. Elton's "Burn Down the Mission" is another tune that retains the "Toto" sound, yet doesn't take away from what Elton produced.
Think about it - how many covers have new artists butchered? As a classically trained pianist, I was taught to keep it in the style/era of the original composer, yet make it my own. Toto has done just that. Though I do not care for most of the songs on this album (the originals never did anything for me), I am impressed, I am impressed with the overall result. If you enjoy Toto's music, this is one for your collection.
Worth the money.......2005-12-23
The only time I have ever heard of TOTO was that song "Africa" in the 80's. I was looking for a CD to differentiate from my usual, and a good firend of mine who happens to be a professional guitar player reccomended this CD to me. Although im not an avid fan as some may have stated, I think this CD was definately worth my money. track # 6, Maiden Voyage I think is a very awesome jam to relax to and just enjoy yourself. This may not be a hardcore TOTO Cd, but I definately reccomend it for anyone looking to sit back and just enjoy some good sounds.
Great Musicians gone bad!!!.......2005-08-23
I grew up listening to TOTO and have been to concerts... they are at the top of my music pile, but this album is the perfect example of great musicians making a bad album. If you are looking for a GREAT TOTO album/DVD get their 25th anniversary TOTO Live in Amsterdam DVD....wow talk about fantastic musicianship... simply a unbelievable DVD. The lighting, sound and music arrangement was and is the best.
This album... I hate to say it in the same sentence with TOTO...SUCKS!!! Sorry guys... I own them all but this one.

Not as good as their debut.......2004-07-27
Not nearly as musically interesting as their debut, self-titled, disc. On Looking Through, the tracks seem to blend together with no amazing standout tracks. I suppose you can give them props for not trying to hard to produce a single, but it feels like they didn't try to hard to produce any truly great songs.
If you're new to PMM, get their self-titled disc. Looking Through is mostly for the hardcore fans who are mostly interested in supporting a band who showed tremendous potential with their first album.
PMM pull through on their own with another stellar release........2004-04-02
After the lack of promotion and effort put behind Professional Murder Music's long-delayed debut in 2001 (at least on the record label's part), PMM and Geffen records went their seperate ways, and a little over two years later, the band returns, just as strong as ever, with their second album, self-produced and self-released. Is the album good? The band hasn't missed a beat. Picking up where the first album left off, the band has taken it's own brand of industrial neo-metal to the next level. 'Looking Through' hits the ground running with the magnificent opener "Something New," which to me, is the highlight and defines the album. Roman's vocals soar over this disc just as powerfully as before; he has one of the most distinct voices in rock today. Tommy Lee makes a guest appearance on "Disconnect" (thankfully, he is behind the drum-set and not the mic) and Jason Miller of Godhead adds his vocals to "Don't Stop." The remix of "Something New," done by Buzz McCoy is pretty interesting and almost matches the intensity of the original. Just like Orgy's more recent self-release (one worth checking out if you dig this disc) this album is a mere nine tracks deep (excluding the remix) but gets the job done quickly and efficiently. Without the help of a major label, PMM seem to be doing just fine. Let's hope they survive and keep on making albums just as good as this and their debut. If you can find it, grab it.
Welcome back.......2004-01-31
Professional Murder Music proved they still had what it took. This CD while short, is really amazing. Individual song reviews would be...
01. Something New (5/5)
02. Don't Stop (3/5) [bland compared to other songs on here]
03. As It's Fading (5/5)
04. Disconnect (4/5) [hardest song on the album]
05. Start Again (3/5) [another bland song]
06. Clear (5/5)
07. All Lost Things (5/5) [fantasic instrumental]
08. Staring (3/5)
09. Endless (5/5)
10. Something New (Remix) (5/5) [almost better then original]
Professional Murder Music is defenitley an underrated band.. But i think i prefer it this way, as opposed to constant radio play that tends to ruin great songs. Keep checking their website (www.murdermusic.com) for their new acoustic album their releasing that will be a internet exclusive.
A great comeback.......2004-01-28
Professional Murder Music really came through with this album. After waiting for PMM to release a new album for what seemed to be a decade, I can't say I'm dissapointed. Looking Through is really great. This time around they released on their own lable, Wormhole Records. Although Looking Through is a bit lighter than the self-titled album, it retains the classic PMM sound. It opens with the excellent 'Something New' and doesn't let down. The heavy riffs and keyboards haven't left, and neither has the raw talent of the band. Vocalist Roman Marisak still sounds great. There are only two minor complaints I have about Looking Through:
The Album is too short. With only 10 tracks(one instrumental, one remix) it runs at a short 40 minutes. Thankfully it's good enough to play over and over
Although it has nothing to do with the music, Looking Through has the blandest packaging I have ever seen. The CD is plain black with band and album name. The leaflet has one band photo, the lyrics and credits and white on plain black.
This album is short, but very sweet. I hope to see PMM in concert in February.
This is far better than the self-titled.......2003-12-09
PMM sounds soo much better now.. The cd does only have like 10 songs and one is a remix, but still, those other nine songs are well worth it.. They did the right thing by switchin labels.. They still have their same ideal industrial sound, but something is different.. This cd was well worth the money and the wait..

Great Stuff.......2005-08-16
I only have hazy memories of Gene Pitney during his glory days. (I was only a little kid back then). I do remember Liberty Valance, It Hurts To Be In Love and especially Town Without Pity which I sent my grandfather out to buy, without success! LOL. This is a great set. If you want to know what great 60's music was like sung by one of the best 60's crooners, you cant top Gene Pitney. This has many more songs than the other compilations and is worth the extra price. Great music doesnt date and this is 60's music at its best!
No...not quite "ultimate"...darnit.......2005-04-24
Yes...it's a marvelous package with a first-rate interview with Gene Pitney himself, but, amazingly, of the 17 mono or rechanneled tracks, 10 of those in mono....have been previously issued in stereo on other collections! Pitney's producer was known for producing Pitney (from "Liberty Valance" on) using multi-track stereo equipment. In some cases, additional harmony vocals were added to the mono mixdown. That explains why "It Hurts To Be In Love" has never been issued in stereo. (On the plus side, one of the mono tracks here, "That Girl Belongs To Yesterday" is usually issued in stereo missing the harmony vocal!).
So...on this "Ultimate" collection, "Mecca" is in mono (why??). Same goes for "True Love Never Runs Smooth", "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa", "Who Needs It", "Yesterday's Hero", and "Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love", among others.
I own it...but I'm disappointed. This previously-available-in-stereo mono issue also hampers finding a definitive CD by The Searchers.
Truly the ultimate Gene Pitney collection.......2003-03-31
This is a very comprehensive collection of Gene's finest music. All his British and American hits are here, including his American country hits with George Jones and his late eighties duet with Marc Almond.
In the sixties, Gene had many high-charting pop hits in Britain and America. Curiously, none of them reached number one, although he reached number two in both countries with different songs. He finally got to number one in Britain when Marc Almond and Gene recorded Something's gotten hold of my heart as a duet.
I'm gonna be strong was Gene's only hit to reach the top ten in both Britain and America. Gene's other top ten American hits to be found here are The man who shot Liberty Valance, Only love can break a heart and It hurts to be in love. Gene's other top ten British hits to be found here are Twenty four hours from Tulsa, That girl belongs to yesterday, I must be seeing things, Looking through the eyes of love, Princess in rags, Backstage, Nobody needs your love, Just one smile and the original solo version of Something's gotten hold of my heart.
With a total of fifty tracks this collection includes not just the essentials, but all the minor hits and even a couple of songs recorded in Italian. It also includes his original version of Hello Mary Lou, a song he wrote before he had a recording contract and which was a huge hit for Ricky Nelson.
You won't find a better compilation of Gene's music anywhere, although if you just want a basic sixties hits collection there are plenty of single CD's to choose from.
SIX STARS RATING ON PITNEY.......2001-08-27
THIS 2 CD COMPILATION RANKS AS ONE OF THE GREATEST DEALS AVAILABLE AT AMAZON.COM.I HAVE COLLECTED MOST OF GENE'S MUSIC OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS AS HE CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICAL ENTERTAINERS OF ALL TIME.TO DENY YOURSELF THIS WONDERFUL PIECE OF MUSIC HISTORY WOULD BE SINFUL-HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Incredible - Fifty songs by a great artist!.......2001-07-21
There are hit pop songs (I counted 24 that I recognized), hit country songs, hit songs in Italian, and a well-chosen selection of songs which document Gene Pitney's very successful Anglo-Euro career and which many Americans will, like me, be hearing for the first time. This is the most comprehensive anthology of any artist I've seen outside of the coffee-table box-set types that sell for many times more than this. What a terrific find! The interview on the liner notes is informative and fun. Gene Pitney participated in a song-by-song commentary going right down the list of all 50 songs, with plenty of storytelling to illuminate the people and situations surrounding each. It's a treasury of insight into the personality and history of the artist and his times that simply can't be found elsewhere. Candid, funny and fascinating, I'm sure there's a great book in this man waiting to be written! Back to the music: What must be said is that Gene Pitney was the most accomplished male vocalist of the 60s "teen idol" set, with great pipes, a unique sound, incredibly nuanced phrasing and a flair for drama that made his vocals both real and moving. From "Liberty Valance" to "Half Heaven - Half Heartache," he gave conviction to every lyric and easily pulled the listener into his world. Considering he was only twenty when his singing career began (apparently without any formal vocal training beyond what he picked up as a songwriting, demo-singing worker-bee at the Brill Building), you have to conclude that this guy is seriously gifted, and was born to the task. Add to that a truly top-notch selection of material which yielded (for starters) about a dozen 60s classics, and I wouldn't hesitate to put him right beside Sinatra as the best vocal interpreter of his generation. In short, if you're even a casual fan, you'd be foolish to pass this up. Buy "Looking Through Gene Pitney" and prepare to be amazed and delighted by this man and his music.

Customer Reviews:
Two interesting mid sixties albums.......2003-04-06
The two albums that make up this twofer were released with different titles in Britain and America. On this CD and others in this series, the original British titles are used. There was an album released in the sixties titled Looking through the eyes of love, but it's not here - its British title was Gene Pitney sings the songs of our times and it can be found on a different CD in the series.
So, the first album here was titled I'm gonna be strong in Britain but the American title was It hurts to be in love. Both titles were top ten hits in America, but only I'm gonna be strong reached the top ten, where it peaked at 2. Among the other tracks here is That girl belongs to yesterday, which had been a British top ten hit. However, the version on this CD is the album version.
The second album was titled Looking through the eyes of love in Britain, but the American title was I must be seeing things. It includes another American hit, Last chance to turn around, which was only a B-side in Britain. Just one smile was released as a single over a year later, then became the title of yet another album to be found elsewhere in this series. There's no living without your loving was a huge British hit for Manfred Mann.
The other songs on both albums all appear to be contemporary, including Bacharach and David's If I never get to love you. This is an interesting pair of Gene Pitney albums that all his fans will appreciate.
The Discovery of a Great Voice.......2002-12-07
By the end of the '80s Gene Pitney recorded a new version of his song "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" duetting with Marc Almond, it was a number 1 in UK, in some other European countries and a world wide smash hit. This fact discovered Gene's great voice to many people that didn't know him before.
In 1994 I first bought a CD collecting his greatest hits, then I bought a 2 CD box compilation, and after that I started buying his complete albums in the format 2LPs on one CD, as this one, which display all his talent in songs he recorded during the 60's and 70's.
He is one of the greatest Pop singers of the era with an excellent taste to choose his repertoire, which includes titles by great songwriters as Bacharach/David, Goffin/King, Randy Newman, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil among others.
By this time I already have almost all his 60s and 70s recordings and I'm looking forward to the release of an announced album of new recordings in which Gene has the collaboration of his son Todd. On several occasions I've read about this CD, I've read that it is already recorded, but I never knew about its release date.
This man can sing.......2002-07-01
This 27-cut compilation has huge highs and two or three pieces I can and do skip. Gene Pitney's unique, exquisite voice and heartfelt deliveries make for a great experience, whether it is a power-ballad like "I'm Gonna Be Strong" or the very next song, "Walk," which is a great, dance-tempo, 'Save the last dance for me' kinda song, and you just can't fault it!
Gene Pitney is a superb singer, with not only the God-given instrument, but also the heart and soul evident in the vocals he was justly famous for. Gene can break your heart with a single note, or he can make you fall in love in one line of a romantic lyric. Plenty of those notes and lyrics are here.
Personal favorites: Cuts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10 (oh my god), 14, 18, 21 (oh my god), 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27.
That's a pretty good batting average. Honestly, there are few songs I don't love and bottom line, I recommend it. I would recommend Gene Pitney singing anything!
My lifelong favorite singer.......2002-07-01
"I'm Gonna Be Strong" is one of the great songs, great recordings, and great performances of the 20th century. This double-album CD has many such great vocals -- Gene Pitney couldn't deliver anything less from his side of the mike.
There are 27 cuts on this double CD. There are five I'm not nuts about, and sometimes I skip them. And sometimes I don't skip them because Gene Pitney brings his own extraordinary vocal and interpretive gifts to the material. I mean, sometimes you just have to say, "whew."
I love 22 of the 27 cuts. I am quite able to appreciate all of them. If you like Gene Pitney, you'll like this. A lot.
Strong/Looking Thru Review.......2001-08-15
This is also a great CD. I hadn't heard him sing alot of the songs on this CD. It also shows how well Gene Pitney can sing all styles of songs. I love the songs "If I Never Get To Love You" and "Follow The Sun". His versatility is amazing. This is a must own CD.
