Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Customer Reviews:
Long Live Olivia!.......2003-04-17
'Long Live Love' will always hold a special place in my heart because it was one of the first Olivia records I ever heard. My father had an old warped copy in his collection, and at the tender age of 7 (a little youth-muffin, I was!) I honed in on it like a dog to a meaty slab of pork and haven't stopped listening to it since.
It is the last of the 'old' Olivia albums. Originally, for all you trivia buffs out there, Olivia was considered a British singer. That is where her early music was recorded and written and where her initial success was at its greatest. 'Long Live Love' was her fourth studio album, released in late 1974 it followed hot on the heels of 'If Not For You', 'Olivia' and 'Music Makes My Day' ('Let Me Be There' in Australia). What makes this album most interesting is that although Olivia's earliest work (her first two and a half records at least) are fairly widely available, a lot of the songs on 'Long Live Love' have never had a commercial release in the UK.
Before I actually review the music, I'll try and explain where some of these songs can be found. The American equivalent of 'Long Live Love' was a compilation (although issued as a 'studio' album) in 1974 called 'If You Love Me, Let Me Know'. That record featured half the 'Long Live Love' album. Similarly, a British compilation CD release from the mid-90's, '48 Original Tracks', seems to be a great alternative to actually tracking down Olivia's early albums as it contains the entire first three studio records - but unfortunately skimps on 'Long Live Love', offering only four songs from the album. That leaves a large wealth of 'unreleased' material on this disc for American fans, and they are some real beauties.
'Free The People' is a rocky little gospel song that Barbra Streisand also covered early in her career, and opens the 12-track set. Curiously this and 'Country Girl' (a drummy stomper about leaving a country life for a city existance) were ommitted from the South African pressing of the record because of 'questionable' lyrical content offensive to the SA government! 'Angel Eyes' is a gorgeous tune in the vein of a brighter, more peppy 'Angel Of The Morning', whilst 'Loving You Ain't Easy' and 'Home Ain't Home Anymore' fall happily into the easy-listening seventies pop bracket.
The entire feel of the album is particularly British, a feeling which Olivia all but lost the following year when she moved to the US and her sound became more of a commercialised American FM radio sound. This lovely 'British' feel is best noted on the beautiful mid-tempo piano ballad 'Someday' and Olivia's cover of 'God Only Knows', complete with plingy strings, shimmering woodwind, and multi-tracked vocals from the diva herself! Lovely. Of course the album also includes 'I Honestly Love You', the Peter Allen ballad which catapulted Olivia into the American charts and hearts of the US public, as well as the much-hated title track which effectively lost Olivia (and Britain!) the Eurovision song contest in 1974. Although Olivia claims to abhor the song nowadays... in retrospect it's cute and has a childlike naivety and sense of hope to it. Awww.
'The River's Too Wide' ventures once again into gospel territory (something Olivia never really explored, so it's a real gem here) and whilst 'Hands Across The Sea' and 'Have Love Will Travel' are rollicking British seventies pop tunes which compliment Olivia's soft, airy vocal style perfectly.
A great album for what it was, with some bright positive lyrics about love and one of Olivia's most beautiful album covers ever...I suppose I'll have to describe - Olivia, fresh-faced with piercing blue eyes, in a lace top surrounded by her name and the name of the album in a 'ribbon and flower' graphic design, all framed with a lovely bright yellow colour. Lovely, like the album and the woman herself.
A bright and cheery album.......2003-03-30
The title track was Olivia's song for Eurovision in 1974, which came fourth to Abba singing Waterloo. It may have been the turning point in Olivia's career, as she concentrated much more on America and much less on Europe after that. I never thought that Long live love was one of Olivia's best songs - and I don't think Olivia was keen on it either - but it's better than most Eurovision songs.
The rest of the album reflects the bright, cheery nature of Long live love, with plenty of up-tempo songs and a few ballads. The standout song is, of course, I honestly love you - it was a huge American pop hit. There is also a superb cover of God only knows, the Beach boys classic. Country girl is a song that really sums up where Olivia's heart is - her music has taken many different directions since 1974 when this was recorded, but I sense that she's really just a country girl at heart.
While this may not be Olivia's strongest album, it is a high quality, joyous album, typical of her early years.
Early Classics Sung With Style.......2002-05-02
A terrific introduction to early ONJ, "Long Live Love" includes some of the artists least known ballads.
A stunning album.......2001-09-16
Olivia's breathtaking voice captures your heart from the moment you start playing this album. Many of her older tracks which have faded into obscurity and have never been released on any of Olivia's greatest hits album's are contained on this album including "Angel Eyes" and "Someday". "I Honestly Love You" is included as well as the upbeat "Long Live Love".
Any Olivia fan will love this album and I highly recommend it.
A Must-Own for any big ONJ fan.......2001-06-12
With her second US album "If You Love Me, Let Me Know" only available in scarce out-of-print supply, this is easily a great supplement! In fact, I think it's even better. It has all the obscure tracks from that album ... "Free The People," "God Only Knows," "The River's Too Wide" ... as well as some that I've only been able to find on this release: "Someday" and "Angel Eyes," both of which are simply gorgeous. If you really love to hear Olivia sing, you will not be disappointed by adding this title to your collection.

A great idea, but incomplete.......2000-10-26
Erich Kunzel plays the Bond themes? What a great idea! In addition, there are a few more selections in the same vein, like the cops-n-robbers TV medley, music from The Untouchables, Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.
Sometimes, you want to listen to the 007 music in instrumental only, and Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops do a good job with the arrangements. But where are the rest of the songs? Missing are three of my all-time favorites, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker. I think the album would be better with 'more Bond, less other.' We certainly don't need TWO selections from Dick Tracy. And the theme from Darkman is stylistically quite similar to Dick Tracy; nothing is gained by playing both. Don't get me wrong; I like Danny Elfman (check out his "Beetlejuice" theme on Kunzel's 'Great Fantasy Adventure Album'). I just wanted to hear all my fave Bond pieces on the one CD.
Still, it's a keeper.
Excellent. The best of this style........1999-02-15
All I can say is listen to the Trumpet solo on goldfinger. The best

Customer Reviews:
One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

Customer Reviews:
The best from The Best Singer and Tenor of all time........2007-04-24
This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.
Gorgeous.......2001-11-25
Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.
Another great CD by the greatest singer of all time!!!.......2001-07-17
Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

You never know when beauty will break your heart.......2006-07-17
This was Thomas Hampson's debut album on EMI, a 1990 release that catapulted him much higher than his earlier recitals on Teldec. It comprises a rather scholarly collection of sentimental memorabilia. Each selection is a "platform song" that Victorians cherished from singers who varied operatic arias with sentimental popular stuff. (Was it Nellie Melba or Jenny Lind who interjected 'Home, Sweet Home' in the middle of the Marriage of Figaro?)
Yet as forgotten as platform songs are today, with the exception of a few Stephen Foster tunes like 'Ah, May the Red Rose Live Alway,' a folk song like 'Shenandoah,' and a brass-bound immortal like 'Roses of Picardy,' everything on this unique CD is ripe with emotion. I am not ashamed to say that I teared up the first twenty times I listened (compulsively) to this memento from a more innocent age.
One is transported back to the time and spirit of Kipling and empire, TR and the Rough Riders, and brave young dougboys marching off to their doom singing 'Over There.' I teared up just writing that sentence.
Songs Saved From Obscurity.......2001-03-27
There is a tremendous body of American songs which is yet to be fully appreciated. Thomas Hampson does us a favor in saving these gems from what might become obscurity. The songs on this disc are truly sentimental, bringing us from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. I commend Hampson for his continued dedication to singing these songs which rival the art songs of any culture and are worthy to be heard, sung and recorded.
Charming songs, beautifully sung.......1999-06-09
This is not just an album of chestnuts. Hampson's love for the material shines through. His performance is always just right. His voice is warm, velvety, and wonderful! "In the Gloaming" and "Roses in Picardy" will bring you to tears, but my favorite is "Do not go, my love." Bravo, Tom!
