5 out of 5 stars Not Sublime, but good none the less.......2007-01-05

If you're looking for Sublime, this ain't them; bUT an excellent CD. A lot of really good songs, some mellow, some flow harder. Certainly would recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars None of you have a clue.......2005-09-07

I am from PA and I saw three of LB Shortbus shows in PA and traveled to WV to see a fourth show. I have spoke with the band several times before and after. RAS-1 (singer/guitarist) was one of Brad Nowell's best friends and actually appears in the "Stories, tales, lies & exaggerations" Sublime documentary, and in the "What I Got" music video. Trey, (lead guitarist) actually was practicing with Sublime and they were planning on adding him into the band eventually until the tragic event of BJN's death. He also wrote the original "Falling Idols" song performed by Sublime and was in the band Falling Idols. Dameon (drummer) was just friends with them, and I don't know anymore about his history. Eric Wilson (bassist) was the bassist from Sublime and is now in ShortBus. They are excellent live and all you fake Sublime fans will be disapointed because you expect them to be Sublime when the truth is, Eric and Bud cannot make another Sublime without Brad; however, they still can get together with some good friends and create some kickin' music with fusions of raggae/rock/punk They also have a new dog after Louie had died, and his name is Fourty. He is a black lab. All of this information is from my own experience talking to the band members.

5 out of 5 stars A great album that went under the radar..........2005-07-30

Unless you are a So Cal music freak, you wouldn't have followed the remnants of Sublime this far, but you should have. This is one of the greatest albums of the past 4-5 years. Just as the Dub All-Stars made great albums, this is a little different, more true to rock music. Buy it NOW!

4 out of 5 stars a solid effort.......2005-06-30

do not mistake the lbsb for sublime or lbdas. they sound nothing like either one. you will be quite disappointed if you are buying this album to hear sublime / lbdas. they may have a a member or two from both bands, but the music sounds nothing like sublime or long beach dub all stars. that being said, it is a solid record musically. nothing spectacular, but a good effort that is musically all over the place in terms of style and influence.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-02-17

first of all Opie Ortiz, Jack Maness, Marshall Goodman, and Tim Wu were NOT members of Sublime. They were guests on some sublime albums. They were from LBDA. Sublime was Brad Nowell, Eric Wilson, and Bud Gaugh. Anyway this album is is awesome.

4 out of 5 stars solid.......2007-01-18

this cd was a great intro to shortbus. they remind me a lot of SI SENORITA which most people don't know about but you can find them on my space. its a mix of ska and reggae blended with rock. e wilson kills it and the sublime name lives on with shortbus.

5 out of 5 stars just buy it already.......2005-06-10

this is as good as any ep gets. it's an excellent intro for anyone interested in lb shortbus. although i recommend getting "flying ships of fantasy" instead or even better - get both of them (3 songs from this aren't on their lp). their live shows rock, anywhere between 2-3 hours of pure bliss. cool down to earth people that aren't afraid to talk to their fans, especially ras.

5 out of 5 stars Its what I call good music.......2003-01-17

If you like any of what these 4 musicians did before they formed the band "Long Beach ShortBus", you will like this cd. Its down to earth music and you will agree with the lyrics and tap to the beats.Even though they resemble the sound of "Sublime" and "Long Beach Dub Allstars", they definealty have their own Style. DO yourself the favor and buy this album. You wont be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Shortbus cd ....... expectations exceeded !.......2002-07-26

i wasn't sure what to expect when i got this ..... to say i was pleasently suprised is an under-statement ! this EP is amazing.
I have always been a big fan of RAS-1 & after hearing his work on this EP I am even more impressed.
Standouts for me are "California Grace" .... a great tune that alternates between mellow verses & a more "rocky" chorus. "Stray with me" continues to mesmerise me with it's multi-layered, trippy kind of feel ..... real passion in the delivery tops it off. Eric Wilson's bass lines are world class.
"Odd Walking Man" with vocals courtesy of Butthole Surfer Paul Leary tops the EP off for me with it's old skool LBC punk stylee.
The lyric "It's not about the junk i throw away, it's about the junk i fix" leaves me with a lasting impression of this songs meaning ....... this song is LBC punk at it's best.

the dub intro's are great providing even further proof of this bands versatility.

no, it doesn't sound like sublime or the long beach dub all stars ...... it sounds like shortbus ...... a very talented group of guys doing their thing .... and doing it amazingly well.

can't wait for a full length offering.

beg, borrow or steal this ........ just do yourself a favor & get it.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty nice cd...........2002-07-11

If you're a fan of the Long Beach Dub Allstars, Sublime, or many of those So-Cal bands, I suggest you to buy this EP.

Don't expect alot of the usual Punk-Reggae-Ska style on the whole cd, as from you can hear this band, though this four-piece band borrows similar sounds from their roots, they add a new more rockier vibe to many of the tracks.

Eric Wilson fills in a pretty sick bass line for the intro and outro of this EP, which is also followed by nice instrumentation.

"California Grace" is a really nice mellow rock track, it reminds me a bit of the LBDAS song "Sunny Hours", but in a way it sounds more mature and you can hear some type of growth in part of Ras-1. Vocally, Ras-1 shines in this track. This track is one of the stand outs.

"Better Than This" in my opinion is the stand out track on the cd. It has some touches of reggae in it, but it also combines more of a steady rock vibe to it. There's some really nice guitar in this song.

One fan compared Ras-1 on "Take It Slow" to Bono from U2. Ras-1 does a pretty good job vocally on this song, this is one of the stand-out tracks. Though there is a touch of reggae, like most of this cd, it's more rock. It has a catchy chorus. All in all, a nice song.

"Stray With Me" is the calmest song on the cd. The song just mesmorizes you into a calm and collected vibe, it's a nice song to chill to. It's not one of my favorites, but it's pretty good. Not too much reggae in this track as well.

If you need your punk fix, "Odd Walking Man" is just the song for you. This track would go well with the next Tony Hawk Pro-Skater video game.

The reason I rated this EP 4 starts is because it's not close to perfection, but that doesn't mean it's not great. This is the debut release from LB Shortbus. Though the band might have its few similarities with Sublime and the Long Beach Dub Allstars, you can hear that the band has a different formula and I expect this band to come out with some really good releases in the future.

Buy this EP, it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Music from the LBC and Beyond.......2003-07-11

Great album for the car. An hour of new music from around the world. Leek and the Bouncing Uptones from South Africa starts the CD out with new great songs and some terrific horn work. Souldier of Fortune debuts next with a couple of songs that sound alot like the Long Beach Dub Allstars. Speaking of which the next two songs are from Long Beach Shortbus themselves. Three and a Quarter from Portugal are 4th up. 3 1/4 sounds like Secret Hate and Sublime put together. Great stuff. Mongrel from Germany has 3 new songs, which have a bit of a Pennywise influence, but don't get me wrong they are diffenently an original act. The Dutch band Walrus has a couple of rocking tunes, followed by Long Beach Corn Dog laying down some cool surf covers. The last song is a Live Falling Idols song, with local rock-star Ken Rocker sharing the lead vocals.

A must have for LB Shortbus fans, and anyone else who likes good music.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2003-10-26

I have had this in my car for the last two weeks, and don't feel like taking it out yet.

I bought it to hear the Shortbus songs, but it turned me on to some great live stuff from Secret Hate and the Falling Idols. Also the Mongrel songs and Leek and the Bouncing Uptones are awsome.

CD is worth it for the Shortbus songs alone.
