From the Runaways to the Donnas, the garage has served as a safe haven for women who would rather be rock stars than sleep with them. The latest quartet of girls to strap on electric guitars, throw on a pair of scuffed-up Converse sneakers, and howl like maniacs comes from the small town of Robertsfors, Sweden. Like the finest work of fellow Swedes the Hives and Division of Laura Lee, Sahara Hotnights' brash debut album runs exclusively on heavy riffs and even heavier attitude. They roll out the hairy '70s punk guitars for "Alright Alright (Here's My Fist, Where's the Fight?)," talks hair-yanking trash on "Only the Fakes Survive," and does a bang-up early Blondie tribute with "Keep Up the Speed." Explosive, indeed. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars sexy crazy cool.......2004-04-21

When I first heard about The Donnas and saw a picture of them I thought they were going to sound great. Maybe something like Sahara Hotnights actually do. This band is another import from the Sweden scene which we write about so much about in Free Williamsburg. We are on it. Sahara Hotnights released their first record in 1997, so even though they look like jailbait they are veterans of the scene in their early 20s. Their fresh take on music is a mix of new wave and punk. This is the music that is taking over Sweden and now the world. It's always interesting to see different takes. It's more exotic that way. Most of us need to make room in our record collections for something like this.

It begins with "Alright Alright" and "Keep The Speed Up" which are both fast paced songs with original melodies. The guitar playing is jagged and crisp. It's hard to believe that there could be a female Stooges. Since they have been doing this band from such an early age they seem world weary and skilled. The best song is "On Top Of Your World" and defines their original sound. Sometimes they are like a more melodic Social Distortion in their early days. They do draw from the well of punk but from no one in particular. Where The Donnas seem stiff at times, this Swedish band seems more expansive and imaginative. If Kim Fowley had this group in the 1970s they would have been the biggest band on the planet. The album is wall to wall speed. If they would have done some slow songs maybe that would be interesting. But who am I to keep these gals back? They could be the next big thing. (...)

4 out of 5 stars Jennie Bomb.......2004-02-02

Sahara Hotnights might be the latest Swedish import but they certainly mark themselves as one of the best. These four ladies bring classic punk rock hooks with just enough of a pop sensibility to make them more palatable to the masses and easier to digest than other like-minded Scandinavian bands - The Hives and The International Noise Conspiracy. *Jennie Bomb* certainly makes the aforementioned boys jealous of the girls' firepower instantly exploding with eleven songs in thirty-two minutes. "On Top Of The World" and "Fire Alarm" are from the punk album No Doubt never made as lead singer Maria Andersson comes off as a prettier Joan Jett fronting the Ramones. Sahara Hotnights are posed to break big with *Jennie Bomb* and it won't be long until their name is mentioned with the same reverence of other grrrl rawkers Sleater Kinney and L7.

3 out of 5 stars They Rock Alright Alright!.......2003-10-30

Sahara Hotnights are full of rock, edge, and attitude. Forget Avril Lavine, these girls really do rock. You will be rocking from the first track to the last track. Alright Alright!!

5 out of 5 stars GARAGE GURLZ RULE MY SKOOL.......2003-10-01

one of my most favorite girl groups right now. They're fiesty, pushy, aggresive fems who know how to write songs with POP ROCK HOOKS FROM HEAVEN. I have to admit that, at least for myself, this "garage rock" band of girls is the best one around. Their songs are solid, unshakable, and extremely CATCHY. Oh yeah, and they're some of the sexiest girls in rock right now.. droool

5 out of 5 stars Cheers to Sahara Hotnights!.......2003-07-03

This Swedish girl rock group have a good grasp of the key ingredients to great rock music: attitude and talent. With their good looks and "I'm-gonna-kick-your-...-with-my-hot-boots-if-you-don't-shut-up-and-listen" attitude, they will be sure to entertain you. They definitly make better and harder rock/punk music than most of their all-male AND all-female rock contemporaries. It's obvious to anyone after listening to the record that these rock chics know how to make great punk/rock music.

5 out of 5 stars Punk Perfection.......2005-01-30

This album is simply amazing; every song is great and gets stuck in my head. Not only did I love the songs the first time I heard them, but I love them more every time I listen to them. If you're just getting into the Sahara Hotnights, this is the album to start your collection. And the second disc is definitely worth the extra couple bucks. Here's what I give each song on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being one of the worst songs ever and 10 being one of the best.

1) ALRIGHT ALRIGHT 9.5/10
2) KEEP UP THE SPEED 10/10
3) ON TOP OF YOUR WORLD 8/10
4) FIRE ALARM 8.5/10
5) NO BIG DEAL 9/10
6) WITH OR WITHOUT CONTROL 7.5/10
7) DOWN AND OUT 8.5/10
8) ONLY THE FAKES SURVIVE 7/10
9) FALL INTO LINE 7/10
10) WE'RE NOT GOING DOWN 10/10
11) OUT OF THE SYSTEM 8.5/10

1) KEEP UP THE SPEED 10/10
2) TEENAGE KICKS 9/10
3) BREAKDOWN 10/10
4) NOW TONIGHT 9/10

Out of the 400+ CDs I have, Jennie Bomb is in my top 10.
Also, if your huge Sahara Hotnights fan like me, check out my Best of the SAHARA HOTNIGHTS album, I created @
