This two-CD set, offering Schumann's groundbreaking Piano Quintet, the Piano Quartet, and the three piano trios, is an exceptional bargain. The approach of the Beaux Arts players and their associates is essentially reflective: they let the music speak for itself and avoid the rhetorical excesses other interpreters often fall victim to. In their hands the quintet, one of Schumann's most inspired creations, receives an especially polished and poised performance, with a lovely dovetailing of voices. The analog recordings are warm and detailed, and they have been optimally transferred to CD. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:

A linkage between the past and the modernism!.......2006-11-28
On the other hand, the set of Trios surmounted the well known Op. 54's Piano Concerto. That reveals a very careful design in the tonal architecture, interlinking parts and polyphonal material which points to the future and Brahms securely had to have discussed this issue with his friend.
Such emblematic attitude made that composers such Mahler and Schoenberg were so influenced due its modernist projections.
The second is by far, the most romantic of the set with Schubertian reminiscences try to realize th far echoes of the last movement of Cesar Franck's Sonata for violin in the third movement of this trio, while the last one is evidently as we expected the most futurist of the three; and you certainly may find seminal seeds for modern age and the Viennese school of the early ages of the XX Century.
So, consider a wise acquisition to have these distinguished and refined Trios because reflect fundamental works that far to be transitional were the most perfect linkage between the dying Romanticism and the arousing musical modernism and illustrates wisely that smart statement of Octavio Paz: "The past is function of the future. The will of future makes the dead bodies stand and puts order in its works..."

Personally I found Schumann's compositions excessively mercurial at times but that's my problem. If you like him this should'nt be missed.

Amazon.com essential recording
Dvorák composed four piano trios, and all of them are fine works. The very last, the so-called "Dumky" Trio, has eclipsed the others in popularity, which is a pity, particularly with respect to the Trio No. 3 in F minor. This work, composed at exactly the same time as the Seventh Symphony, is clearly the finest work of its type since Beethoven--and that includes the three trios of Brahms. Perfectly proportioned, emotionally intense, and chock full of incredible tunes, it grabs you from the first note and never lets you go. The Beaux Arts Trio performs all of this music with their customary musicality and expertise, and the "twofer" price in unbeatable. Now try that Trio No. 3--you'll be glad you did. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:

An older recording, but still amazing.......2002-06-23
I like to say about Brahms' music that it is airtight. There is never a wasted note. Every bit of melody, every nuance and texture in the harmony are masterfully crafted and serve a purpose. There is never a moment when you look at your watch and wonder when the composer is going to get around to wrapping this or that section up and get to the exciting stuff.
The Beaux Arts Trio along with Walter Trampler do a commendable job of bringing every moment of beauty and excitement out. They balance the sweetness of the slow movements and melodies well with the aggression and rhythmic complexities of the quicker movements. My current favorite quartet is the A Major. There is a singable melody or rhythmic puzzle in every movement. I listened to the final movement four times today (excessive I know, but it's just so much fun to try to figure out how Brahms manipulates those melodies within the time signatures)!

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

Haydn's piano trios deserve far more attention than they receive. As music lovers know, they are every bit as rewarding as his symphonies and string quartets, and also very numerous. They are not, however, true trios as we understand the term now. Essentially, Haydn took the sonata for violin and piano and added a cello part to strengthen the weak bass of contemporary pianos. This doesn't inhibit the quality of the music in any way, but it has prevented modern piano trios from taking them up since the cellist usually wants something more exciting to do. All praise, then, to the Beaux Arts Trio for understanding that musical quality is more important than instrumental display. --David HurwitzAmazon.com
This set, recorded during the 1970s, is still the only complete recording of Haydn's trios. (Imagine if there were only one recording of Mozart's or Beethoven's trios!) In this low-priced, space-saving format, it is one of the greatest chamber music bargains of all time. The great Beaux Arts Trio took its time recording the music, so every piece was thoroughly studied and absorbed before it was recorded. Some period instrument groups might be more stylish or authentic in a given trio, but this is still a splendid series of performances and your only chance to hear all of the music. Take the box on vacation; it doesn't use up much space! --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Little Gems........2007-07-19
Like many people, I have thought of Haydn principally in terms of his "thousands" of symphonies and felt the title "Papa" well deserved. However, having spent an increasing amount of time over the last five years in getting to know his chamber works, I have altered my opinions dramatically and long since have ceased to think of him as "Papa".
Given that for a few years at least, he shared the middle of the 18th. century with Bach, his works were highly innovative following so close upon the heels of the Barok. I think Haydn receives far too little credit for the pioneering work he did. His string quartets are truly of the highest order and given that he "invented" the genre, astonishingly forward and musically developed. Mozart did nothing to advance the form which Haydn left as a wonderful foundation upon which Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn could build.
Whilst the quartets are of a comparatively cerebral character, these piano trios are not so. Not because of any inventive shortcomings of on the part of the composer but due to their being intended for a different and much larger audience along with groups of amateur players to whom his publishers could sell lots of sheet music; it should be remembered that Haydn's reputation extended from Italy to Sweden and he was enormously popular at the end of the century. These trios, whilst very occasionally sounding just a little "commercial", make very satisfying listening and I enjoy them immensely.
The Beaux Arts' readings are characteristically "safe" and I have no quibble with this. Another reviewer has found them "bland" but with this I disagree. Frankly, I think it difficult to make a proper judgment because, as has been pointed out elsewhere, the strings are not at all well recorded and for much of the time the pieces sound like a piano sonata with occasional string accompaniment. I find this irritation present on other Beaux Arts/Philips recordings but in this case less annoyingly so as the piano really is a stand-alone part with the overall nature of the works being surprisingly undiminished - particularly the 'cello whose principal function is to bolster the rather fragile bass of the early Viennese fortepiano - don't have a lot to say that is of much musical consequence. Fortunately, Menahem Pressler, being a superb pianist, carries the burden masterfully. In other respects the standard of recording is good.
I would like to have awarded five stars; generally, this set deserves them but I feel some penalty has to be imposed in respect of the poor microphone balance. Musically, this collection is a well-performed joy and I'm sure others will delight in it.
Delightful Music.......2006-03-04
This music is also wonderful to listen to while doing desk work or reading. You'll not be disappointed.
Too Bland for Haydn!!!.......2006-01-17
I know that the Beaux Arts Trio has a Big Reputation but I need to say this.I found their Beethoven Trios a Trifle Bland as well. The Stern Rose Istomin Excel in that recording as well!Ditto for their Schubert Piano Trios.Just what is the Difference?I find the Stern Rose Istomin Trio play with Fresh Abandon whereas the Beaux Arts Trio seem to be too Studious,a little too serious! This robs a little bit of spontaneity and LIVING IN THE MOMENT vitality.(More so for Franz Joseph Haydn!)
Yes,This may be the only complete recording of the wonderful Haydn Piano Trios, but I would strongly advise that you collect the individual performances by different groups after due listening.
Haydn: Complete Piano Trios.......2005-09-06
Gramophone "Top 100 " Recording .......2005-04-25
Haydn's Piano Trios is an abundant, marvelous cache of chamber music to explore. Many are similar in mood and interplay to Mozart's sprightly Piano Trios, while some movements of the late works forshadow Beethoven's expressivity. Haydn's piano trios never cease to delight with their classical balance, lightness-of-heart, bubbly joy and smooth textures. One reason for such a proliferation of works in the piano-trio genre in Haydn's time is that the home market for such compositions was exploding in mid-18th century with seemingly every middle to upper class household now owning this new, must-have musical instrument - the clavier.
The Beaux Arts Trio do great justice to this works and show they really care and enjoy Haydn's music. The artistry, performance and sound quality of these recordings are superb on all levels which is probably why this set won the impressive awards of "Top CD of the Year" and a "Top 100 Recording" from Gramophone - the latter being a supreme compliment. The crisp, dancing piano tempos from pianist Menahem Pressler in these trios are energetic, sure-footed and delightful, while the two strings bring a rich tonality and elegant mannerism that is most fitting for this genre and period. As a whole, the Beaux Arts Trio exhibits the kind of natural, seamless musicianship that comes through years of playing together. Their playing and this CD show classical-era chamber music at its finest, and "legendary" would not be an out-of-place description of this fine trio. As of 2005, the trio is now in its 50th year with original member pianist Menahem Pressler still going strong. All of their recordings still decades later are among the top positions in the ratings in spite of much fine competition (Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms piano trios). I would say the Haydn Piano Trios are just as enjoyable and musically rich than their Mozart and Beethoven recordings. I would not be without one set.
For all these reasons, these most-admirable recordings are some of my most frquently played discs in all my collection (I play music all day while studying or working). Others note this "ever-fresh" appeal that allows lots of play before any weariness sets in. So, the quality of recordings, beautiful slim packaging, decent liner notes and exceptional value all combine to make this set a compelling investment for the chamber-music lover. And if you think 9 CD's of piano trios are a lot, consider it a lifetime investment and exploration.

Wonderful Production.......2006-02-27
Well worth buying but it is best if accompanied by the libretto so you can get the most of Gilbert's dialogue.
Quality but Staid.......2005-05-30
For newbies: the D-Carte Company produced the premieres of the G&S operettas with Gilbert and Sullivan. Until some point well into the 20th c (1980's?) the company performed and recorded the repertory. Thus, there is a rare historical cachet to anything D-Carte.
The Good on this recording: a sly, sonorous, and expressive Police Sgt; sensitive duet singing by Frederick and Mabel; anchoring tempi; a strong chorus.
The Bad on this recording: J. Reed as Major-General is really hard for me to listen to...his instrument is dreadful AND he manages to not be amusing. On the whole I think sounds as if the cast has been performing this show for decades. There is dignity here, but little light or life. I'm not looking for some tarted-up reimagining, but it all strikes me as stodgy.
Solid and Traditional.......2005-05-20
This production is a solid, regular performance. Excellent voices, English accents, original (as far as I know) dialogue, etc. No surprises at all.
I haven't heard the other versions that are available; but this one sets the standard.
The Best of Many, Many Recordings.......2004-03-11
The ensemble and orchestra conducted by Godfrey create a very exciting, sparkling performance. This is the recording I grew up with and no other has beaten it yet.
All dialogue is included. No updates or major cuts.

Don't underestimate those "unknown" Operettas!!.......2005-07-07
In any case - most people getting this set will already have the Mikado, and very probably Pirates and Pinafore for that matter, so you're really getting it for the others.
So just for the record - someone has to say this!
The Mikado is (of course) a wonderful piece, but it enjoys its long running status as the most successful of all the G&S operettas very largely for "extra-musical" reasons. It is visually so wonderful, with all those great authentic costumes, and the whole idea of satirising English institutions by pretending they are Japanese is of course brilliantly funny.
Again, Pirates and Pinafore enjoy a lot of their acclaim simply because we have heard them so often. And at least part of the initial success of these (admittedly very funny and entertaining) pieces was the vogue for "nautical drama" on the popular Victorian stage.
Iolanthe, Ruddigore, and Yoemen are all MUCH stronger musically than any of what another reviewer here keeps calling the "trilogy". Patience, Princess Ida, and the Gondoliers all excel either "nautical" operetta, at least musically, although not, perhaps, the Mikado. And I have had a lot of fun listening to my recording of the Sorcerer - although I think most at least of the other G&S operettas are even more interesting.
As for "Trial by Jury" it is really another thing altogether - but in its kind the most perfect thing either Gilbert or Sullivan had anything to do with!
This leaves Utopia and the Grand Duke.
Both of these were produced after the long running friendship between G&S had soured, and they have been sadly neglected ever since. Utopia is none the less both musically beautiful and very funny, and well worth taking an effort to come to grips with. The main point of the satire (which many commentators and reviewers seem to miss) is the way that the English language and British (especially English) institutions were being adopted, often rather uncritically, by countries around the world (most, but not all, of them members of the British Empire, of course). India is perhaps the country Gilbert had most in mind, but you could set it in any of a dozen other countries. The residual problems this has left in the post-colonial world ensure that this work is still far from dated. In some ways this operetta is about globalisation! What could possibly be LESS dated than that!
The Grand Duke, on the other hand, is a bit of an odd man out - I suppose you still have to say it is the weakest of all the G&S efforts. It's the ONLY one that didn't score a very respectable run on its first outing. Surprisingly, however, if an attempt is made to duplicate the musical and (especially) dialogue cuts that G&S would have done themselves if they had not by this time been at each other's throats all the time, a very entertaining piece can be made of it. I was very agreeably surprised by the Ohio Light Opera recording, which does just that - and I am coming round to the idea that the only thing really wrong with the Duke is that it is too long.
ANYWAY:
For all people (especially callow youth) who remain convinced that G&S only wrote three operettas worth listening to - all I can say is, buy this set, and give the lesser known ones a chance. Make sure you have a libretto in your hands as you listen, of course. It may even just need a single hearing in some cases, but otherwise, be patient. In the meantime, you really cannot have any conception of what you are missing.

Breathes there a soul so dead that the very thought of a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta fails to bring a smile to the lips and a spring to the step? Pinafore has reigned (along with The Mikado) as the most popular of the lot, and you can't go wrong with a D'Oyly Carte production. Some may prefer the more operatic version with Malcolm Sargent on EMI or the D'Oyly Carte troupe's earlier incarnations of the work. But this may well be the best of the bunch, thanks to a cast for whom singing G&S is as natural as breathing. Standouts include Thomas Round, whose lovelorn hero strikes just the right Victorian note, veteran Donald Adams, a superbly malevolent Deadeye Dick, Isidore Godfrey, whose buoyant conducting keeps the good ship afloat, and... well, they're all so good, why go on? Kudos to the engineers, too--their early stereo sonics don't sound dated at all. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Gilbert and Sullivan's Best- Being Performed by the Best.......2002-10-07
The only downfall in this opera is some of the parts were horribly casted, Buttercup is overdramatic and Ralph (Rafe) Rackstraw sings like he need to go to the bathroom urgently.

Fine Excerpts At An Affordable Price.......2004-02-07
This recording is only highlights from a 1968 recording (also available on Amazon.com) with the D'Oyly Carte Opera, conductor Isidore Godfrey directs the Royal Philharmonic. In the role of Frederick, lyric tenor Phillip Potter, in the role of Mabel, soprano Valerie Masterson, John Reed as Major General Stanley, Donald Adams as The Pirate King,Owen Brannigan as the Sergeant Of Police, and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer as Nurse Ruth. These singers were at their vocal peaks, and they provide much comedic acting as well. Impressive scenes include the mezzo soprano vocals of Christine Palmer's Ruth as she describes how she mistook "Pilot" for "Pirate" when nursing Frederick (When Frederick Was A Little Lad"), Frederick's plea to the daughters of the Major General to accept him as husband (O Is There Not One Maiden Breast) Valerie Masterson, whose Mabel is the best, singing the coloratura showcase "Poor Wondering One" and her duet in "Stay Frederick Stay" John Reed singing "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" is hilarious and a display of virtuosity for this type of singing. The beautiful chorus "O Dry The Glistening Tear" the upbeat "With Cat Like Tread" and the finale are exceptional.
Excerpts And Highlights From The Pirates Of Penzance.......2004-02-04
The Pirate Of Penzance is a beautiful work of art. The sugary and sentimental story is about the exoneration of pirates, who are noble men who have "gone astray" by such authorities as the Major General, his daughters and the Sergeant of Police. Through the course of the opera, Frederick, who was nursed by Ruth and reared by the Pirate King and his roguish band of pirates. When the daughters of Major General Stanley reject his proposals of love, only Mabel consents to love him. But there's a catch. Frederick is in the hands of the pirates until he comes of age but he was born on a leap year and not until 1940 will he be released. The ending is happy and finds the pirates forgivened by the authorities and Mabel and Frederick are happily married.
The singers really deliver a great performance. In the role of the Major General Stanley is John Reed, who by the time of this recording was a veteran singer in the company. He comes off as fatherly, authoritive but cheerful. An especially skilled type of singer is needed for the master song "I am the Very Model Of A Modern Major General". In contrast, a lyric tenderness is required in the final song "Sighing Softly To The River". As mentioned, a lot of this light opera shines with chorus. The excellent choruses include the opening chorus "Pour The Pirate Sherry", "Oh Dry The Glistening Tear"- this one in particular is set to beautiful music and the daughters of the Major General sound heavenly when they sing in chorus, expressive also in their chorus when Frederick sings "O, Is There Not One Maiden Breast ?". Frederick is sung by Phillip Potter, whose tenor voice is lyric and romantic, and it sounds gorgeous when in duet with Valerie Masterson's Mabel, as in the duet that follows "Stay Frederick Stay". Valerie Masterson was the principal soprano of the company and performed in various other lead roles such as Princess Yum-Yum in The Mikado. A well-schooled lyric and coloratura diva, Valerie Masterson extended her repertoire into Broadway and opera- she has sung Violetta Valery of Verdi's La Traviata (in both Italian and in English versions), Adele in Die Fledermaus and even a part in an English version of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Valerie has recordings out in stock and available in Amazon.com.
Pirates Of Penzance Highlights At A Cheap Price !!.......2003-12-27
In The Pirates Of Penzance, Mabel and Frederick are temporarily seperated lovers when Frederick is accused of a crime he did not commit. The plot involves pirates, among them the bass-baritone Pirate King. Light-hearted, bouncy tunes abound in what is considered the direct ancestor to Broadway musicals. The Overture makes use of the chorus "With Cat Like Tread" a march-like, jovial piece of music. The Highlights on this cd include "Pour O Pour The Pirate Sherry", "When Frederick Was A Lad", " Poor Wondering One", "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" and the uplifting finale. Valerie Masterson plays the role of Mabel. Her voice is fresh, agile, lyric and she has excellent command of coloratura when warranted, as she sings in "Poor Wondering One". This 1968 recording is in its entirety on the same label with the same singers on a different cd recording.

A classic "Trout" (and a not so convincing clarinet quintet).......2006-10-29
Only in the 4th movement, the famous theme and variations from which the quintet derives its name, do I find Serkin and partners' deliberate tempo questionable: it lends a somewhat plaintive, almost maudlin tone to the theme and first two variations - but it is true the accompanying cricket also enhances their pastoral nature! I find here Curzon's livelier, more carefree approach preferable and more suited to the spirit of the piece, in an otherwise not so excellent version. It is also amusing to note that in the recording made two years earlier for Vanguard by Rudolf's son Peter (then 18 years-old), the string band led by veteran Alexander Schneider from the Budapest Quartet (and other associate of the Marlboro festival) adopted the same tempo in their enunciation of the "Trout" theme (see my review). It must have run in the family. The next two variations display a Beethovenian power which, impressive as it is, may not be particularly suited to Schubert, but the lively and light-hearted coda felicitously rounds up the movement.
Despite these reservations this is, indeed, a classic for the ages. The Mozart clarinet quintet that shares the disc, recorded in 1968, is not on the same plane, unfortunately. Harold Wright's clarinet tone is undistinguished, 1st fiddler Alexander Schneider's instrument is given undue prominence by the recording process and has some sour passages in the Menuetto's first trio. In general the sound lacks brilliance and the string ensemble disagreeably sounds as four individuals rather than as an integrated whole. The opening Allegro is taken at a lazy tempo, and the finale with variations displays a kind of pedestrian bonhomie. The Larghetto, though, taken at an animated tempo true to Mozart's indication, is tender and finely nuanced.
Sadly, an old favorite dims.......2006-01-01
A year later the eminent clarinetist Harold Wright went into the studio with some Marlboro regulars to perform the Mozart Clarinet Quintet. Despite the far better sound and the excellent musicians involved, this is a dull, sometimes listless reading, totally lacking in verve and Mozartean charm. All in all, a miss.
Doesn't do anything for me.......2005-10-15
I'm almost embarrassed I don't like this CD. I listened to the first movement of each piece, and that's all I could take. I'm not an expert, but I do listen to a lot of classical music, and I do like Schubert and Mozart. Many performances of classical music I find quite moving. These two didn't move me at all.
GO FOR RICHTER WITH BORODIN QUARTET!!!.......2005-08-01
