Album Description
Woohoo! Fantastic folk/punk, like Billy Bragg/Stiff Little Fingers/Clash: a socio-political soundtrack for those about to rock! This is the first document of AGAINST ME! in their new form as an electric, four piece band.Customer Reviews:
Essential. .......2007-05-26
The album's lyrics deal with the hypocrisy inherent to an anarchists existence; being free of society and it's constraints, yet relying on the excess of that society to subsist (i.e. "dumpsterdiving"), being an anarchist band that is becoming famous (the primary subject of the title song), and being a person of lofty ideals and societal criticisms, but with no solution to be posed to the perceived problems. I think song number 7, "Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious" sums up the theme of the album perfectly, but I will provide no actual lyrics or reference points to support my claim because you should listen to the actual song, and be moved by it, just as I have. I've known many friends who've commited that entire song to the back of a tee-shirt or hoody. How many bands can claim that their fans have done that? It's powerful stuff that rattles the heart, stirs the spirit, and gets the old brain juices flowing. Even if you are not an anarchist (I certainly am not), the heart, soul, and spirit of the ideals expressed on this album are undeniably beautiful, and should live on for ever.
One of the best albums, ever........2006-09-30
Love it. Love it. Love it........2006-05-13
My fondest memory is that of stumbling onto Impact on the Plan-It-X website. When I'd tell people that Against Me! was my favorite band, they'd look at me and think "Who is this band and is she so excited about it that she has to be an exclamation point after their name?"
I still love them, one of the few who can stand to listen to their new CD. The one thing that's lacking though is that ability to make everyone sing along.
In my hall at school, I managed to find a guy who had heard of Against Me! I had been wearing one of my many shirts when we started talking about the band. He said he wasn't such a big fan, but he liked what he had heard. I immediately let him borrow every CD I owned and a week later, he was almost as big a fan as I was. We'd sit out in the hallway each with our own guitars, and I taught him the chords to songs like We Laugh at Danger, Reinventing Axl Rose, Baby I'm an Anarchist, Cavalier Eternal, Sink Florida Sink... after a while, my whole hall knew the lyrics. We'd sit in the hallway, 5 or 6 of us, many of which had never heard a real AM! song before, and they'd sing their hearts out.
That's the amazing quality of this band. They have the ability to make even the most sensible and logical human beings, even if only 2-3 minutes, want to start a revolution.
Against Me! Yeah!.......2006-04-13
Truly One of the best albums I have heard in so long. From first listen it's a good album, but by the end of listen number two, It's a truly amazing and original album as well as band. Against Me is known for mixing hardcore/metaly punk with folkish country and making it work. At first when hearing of the random styles being mixed together it's like who the hell would do that and why, and that must sound like crap, I know I thought the same thing. But Every album these boys have releases has been great with Reinventing Axl Rose being by far the best so far. The acoustic and electric guitars combined make great. The simple bass and drums are nice. The vocals and seldom screaming is a great textured way to add to the album.
Opening with `Pints Of Guinness Make You Strong' was the perfect way to go. Easily one of the best songs on the album and the perfect one to start the album. With the western guitar playing it is a great song with a really catchy chorus. `The Politics Of Starving' is another good one to keep the pace going. Nice arrangement and the frantic acoustic guitar matches the frantic vocals perfect, making for an interesting listen. `We Laugh At Danger(And Break All The Rules)' is a decent song. Not the best and it doesn't really stick out but it's a good song, though it doesnt really take away or give any thing to the album. `I Still Love You Julie' is a great song. It reminds me of The Clash as do most of the bands songs. The punk rock vocals and lyrics are cool. The vocals are full of angst and the drumming is pretty cool. Nothing really flashy or unique about `Scream Until Your Coughing Blood' it's just a really good song. It's not catchy at all and the music, vocals, and lyrics are nothing special, but somehow it is still a really cool song. It's actually one of my favorites on the album. `Jordans 1st Choice' is a awesome song about sticking to your guns and not compremising what you belieave in. One of the best songs Against Me will ever write. It'll be hard to top. `Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious' is a cool song with great group vocals and it's pretty catchy as well. Next is the killer title track, `Reinventing Axl Rose.' It's a good song, but probably my least favorite song on the album. However the next song, `Baby, I'm An Anarchist' is my favorite Against Me song not only on this album but my favorite of theirs of all time. It's a love song as only a punk band could do it. Yet at the same time it has social political issues intertwined in the lyrics, as once again, only a punk band could do. Easily the bands best song. `Walking Is Still Honest' Is next, and boy is it a great song. One of the better songs on the album clearly. Nice vocals and probably the best lyrics on the album. `8 Hours Of Sleep' is the best song to close the album. It's the calmest song on the album and it's the only ballad. They kind of ease you out of the album which I think was a smart thing because what better way could you end such a hectic album such as Reinventing Axl Rose?
So as I sit back and refelct on the great music that is before me I can't help but to feel satisfied. I feel satisfied because not only is this one of the better albums I have ever heard, but one of the most original and fulfilling pieces of music I have ever heard. So for anyone who is even thinking about buying this album, stop thinking and act, you woun't be dissapointed, quite the opposite in fact. Belieave all the hype about the album, it is simply amazing. Highly recomended.
This really sucks.......2006-03-10

Had a couple of salad vegetables performed Sunday-school songs in our day the way they do here, we parents might have made it through the weekly churchgoing ritual without the regular reaming by our own moms and dads. Delivering the between-song dialogue and cartoon shenanigans that keep kids from drifting off are Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, who whoop it up from the first track with wah-wah guitar effects, loopy lyrical improv, fellow VeggieTales guest vocalists, and a smattering of big-band swing. A kids' choir provides the starch that saves Sunday morning from becoming a beta-carotene bomb. While Bob twists his tongue around mouthfuls like "the mighty messiah that manifests miracles" in "Down in My Heart," for instance, the kids keep pace for at-home singers, who'll follow suit. Similarly, the child crooners carry on without so much as a snicker as Sgt. Larry barks out "Gimme 20!" in "This is My Commandment" and chimes in with a wacky "No way!" during the "Don't let Satan blow it out" verse of "This Little Light of Mine." The originals "God's Way," "Love Your Neighbor," and "I Believe God Can" capture hummable, child-size chunks of morality, complementing traditionals like "He's Got the Whole World" and "Jesus Loves the Little Children." And once Joshua fights the battle of Jericho and we've washed up in a river of peace, this record swings into section two--the split-track rerun (without the veggie character commentary). Cue it up at the crack of dawn as a pre-service snooze-prevention device--ironically, in Bob and Larry's vitamin-rich hands, church songs become less boring broccoli and more crunchy Cheetos. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." This enhanced CD also features notes by the director and composer, as well as exclusive photos and the film's trailer. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Haven't I heard this before?.......2007-06-20
And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.
a beautiful score.......2007-02-09
James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.
Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Nash.
There is an angelic nature to the shape and texture of this music, one that is able to turn demonic as the story line requires. Both by brilliance and by dementia, Nash seems the object of external forces, rising with supreme heroism (at least in the film's version of events) to conquer. The music is there at each score, coaxing the viewer into empathic solidarity with this deeply troubled man and his long-suffering and preternaturally beautiful wife.
This is mood music of the deeply engaging variety. Its lush tonal landscape is achieved under the baton of the composer himself. The score's vast range of volume and expression would certainly have made it a joy to watch in performance.
Alas, we don't have that.
But we have this.
An ethereal, compelling, even gripping tone poem. Buy it.

What's there not to love? The only reason that I give 4 stars instead of 5 is that some of the versions are hard to understand if you don't know the origional. This is a small problem for my 3 year old. However, with Daddy singing them with her and Mommy rolling her eyes in the corner, she gets the idea!

Classic Hymns for a New Generation........2003-05-14
O VEGGIE, WHERE ART THOU? takes it title from the movie with a similar name that had the best-selling, Grammy-winning soundtrack consisting mostly of old time Gospel songs and hymns. Taking its cue from that album, the songs on this album are classic hymns, but with a little Veggie twist. "I'll Fly Away" and "Amazing Grace" are both here, but my personal favorite is "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel".
Great album for kids, for people who like older hymns, or for a Veggie Tale fan.
