raunchy guitarrock .......2006-08-09
I owed this album on vinyl for a long time but I am glad this is available on CD also (with no extras though). Apart from the short setlist, a mere 8 songs are performed, this is one of the best offerings in the Rick Derringer range, a coherent live recording, around 1976, when he and his band gained high heights. Culled from a broad repertoire, with classics like "Teenage Love Affair" and "Still Alive and Well", the latter also from the Johnny Winter roster, and closer, a long version of "Rock and Roll, Hootchie Koo" (also performed by the Johnny Winter Band) plus 3 songs taken from "Derringer" and - sadly only one - from the outstanding "Sweet Evil", on which the same members are present, they played a highly energised set with room for guitarsoloing for both guitarplayers Derringer himself and Danny Johnson. This surely is one of the highlights of the (hard)rockscene in the midseventies. The band certainly showed they could entertain and deliver with no holding back. The album belongs in the long row of excellent seventies live-albums. A true classic, albeit a short one.
An album that holds up well.......2006-07-14
I was a big fan of this album in the early 80's, and then as now I've wondered exactly where Rick fits in among the pantheon of guitar heroes. The closest comparison I can make might be with Pat Travers (particularly live) and possibly Ted Nugent. If you want to hear what best-of-breed American hard guitar rock sounded like pre-Van Halen, this is it - and having purchased "Live!" recently on CD, it still amazes me how good Rick's chops are here. My only criticism might be is that the set list is rather short and could use some tonal variation, but it slams from beginning to end and Rick's vocal delivery is fantastic. The Frank Marino-ish "Universe" is of course the guitar high point - not the world's greatest song perhaps, but still a technical jawdropper even by modern standards.
Derringer At His Best .......2006-03-25
Rick Derringer had been in the rock and roll game for nearly 15 years when this record was recorded. He had alot of expierience under is belt and when it was time to make a live record the record company made a promotion copy called "Live in Cleveland" The record never got released but got some air play of "let me in", "Teenage Love Affair" and the rock and roll anthem that is 15 minutes long "Rock and Roll Hoochie coo" The record was recorded in 1976 at a club date while on tour with Aerosmith. Hence the old marketing trick worked...people would go into the local record store back then and ask for the live derringer lp and they didn't have it. The summer of 1977 when "Derringer Live" was released people were happy to pick up the different recording. Any body that picked up a guitair in the late seventies to learn how to play was influenced by this record simply because Rick Derringer is a great guitairist and he and his band are at thier best here. The song "Beyond the Universe" is a song that musically has been compared to Hendrix. The riffs are fast and sharp and the music is loud in a Zepplin way. Anybody who is interested in playing a guitair, bass, or drums, this should go down in history as a must. It is a loaded cd with a stellar line-up Danny Johnson on guitair, Kenny Arronson on bass, and a 19 year old Vinny Appice of Dio and Black Sabbath fame on drums. Don't deny yourself.
Derringer Live.......2006-03-24
Classic Rick Derringer at his best. A "must own" for all Derringer fans!!
Did somebody say keep on rocking?.......2005-07-04
Finally, somebody released this--thanks to Wounded Bird Records for finally getting this out of the vaults. I was not disappointed to hear this again, it being one of the better live records of 1977. I remember hearing about Derringer from friends of mine who saw them open for Led Zeppelin that summer. This record more or less confirmed what they were saying, which was: lots of fun, great band, good songs, killer guitar.

SNAPSHOT.......2006-04-15
this is the latest release of RICK DERRINGER. it was recorded a couple of years ago and is a great portrait of where Rick is today. the sound is fantastic throughout. the songs are a nice mixture of old and new. fans of RD probably have noticed a spiritual theme in his latest batch of newer songs but he does still have the chops to rock and roll. all the usual standards are here(hang on sloopy, still alive and well and rock and roll hoochie koo)-there are several christian songs tossed in and they rock too. rick never seems to be preachy and is conscious of blending rock with SPIRIT. rick knows how to entertain and has several solos to show off his guitar prowess. if you love rick's rock and have no aversion to "christian" influence-then you will be entertained. a wonderful SNAPSHOT of an aging rocker who is searching for his own personal enlightenment.

Customer Reviews:
its playing live again.......2006-08-15
A mere two years after the (rather short but) excellent live outing "Derringer Live", on the heels of the band Derringers albums "Derringer" and "Sweet Evil", Rick Derringer comes up with another showstomper under the monniker "Derringer" again, which suggests being the name of the band but is unsure whether at that time that band still existed. After the 3 aforementioned albums that band at least dissolved and Rick Derringer picked up his solo-carriere. He then released the studio LP "If I weren't so romantic I'd shoot you" from which a few songs are culled in this radio broadcasted concert, on which only bassplayer Kenny Aaronson from the now defunct band is present, together with 2 new players on guitar and drums. Where the aforementioned "Live" was a real hard rockalbum, with plenty of guitarsoloing, this latter album is more straigth, run of the mill. Some oldies are present ("Let me in", "Teenage Love Affair", "Beyond the Universe" and of course the showstopper "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo", including excerpt from the Kinks' "You really got me" - that is long before Van Halen repeated the trick - are also on 1976 "Live"), "Roll with me" dates from his time with Johnny Winter, together with new songs, one penned and mainly performed by the rythm-section, another by Warren Zevon. Anyway, Derringer, being the sole musician or being the new band, surely could play a steaming liveset with lots of guitars throwed in. Even if half of this setlist is already recorded live shortly before it is enjoyable to listen to.
This is what you call LIVE!.......2004-08-19
Have you ever wondered what a great rock concert would sould like captured on CD? Well pick this up and you will find out in spades!!!!!!!!
The wild guitar rock never stops on this album.
It opens with a Derringer standard Let Me In. Eventually you are led to Midnight Road, one of Rick's best songs and it sounds even better here live than it did on the studio album.
Plus check out Roll With Me.The intensity is so hot you'll be calling the fire dept.!!!!!!!
Derringer Rocks.......2003-09-02
Taken during one of Derringer's best periods. This performance is not with one of his best lineups, but is definately one of his best song lists. If you appreciate "If I weren't so romantic...", You'll love the rare live versions from that Album here. Would rate the overall CD higher, but the other tunes are better on other compilations.
DERRINGER ROCKS!!.......2002-06-24
EXCELLENT LIVE CD BY GUITAR GOD RICK DERRINGER. ALTHOUGH THIS LINEUP IS NOT THE ORIGINAL AND BEST DERRINGER LINEUP, MYRON GROMBACHER ON DRUMS AND NEIL GERALDO ON GUITAR AND KEYBOARDS (AND BOTH OF PAT BENETAR FAME) DO MORE THAN A CAPABLE JOB OF FILLING IN FOR THE DEPARTED VINNY APPICE (DRUMS) AND DANNY JOHNSON (GUITAR). ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THIS CD IS YOU GET 5 TRACKS FROM THE VERY HARD TO FIND ON CD "IF I WEREN'T SO ROMANTIC, I'D SHOOT YOU", AS WELL AS THE USUAL DERRINGER GEMS.
A MUST OWN FOR ANY AND ALL RICK DERRINGER FANS. BANDS JUST DON'T PLAY LIKE THIS ANYMORE.
Essential Listening For All Derringer Fanatics.......2000-03-30
Derringer fans who have longed for his LP "If I Weren't SoRomantic, I'd Shoot You" on CD now have a partial reason tosmile. Most of the material from that LP is performed live on this CD. It's a shame Rick didn't do 'Monomania' in this set. Get this while you can.
