While Jimmy Page and Robert Plant carried on the Zep torch with hit-and-miss projects such as the Firm, the Honeydrippers, Coverdale/Page, and Page/Plant, John Paul Jones got his hands artistically dirty, producing the Butthole Surfers' Independent Worm Saloon, working on film soundtracks, and collaborating with radical punk diva Diamanda Galas. Not surprisingly, several of the tracks on Jones's gutsy first solo album, Zooma, breathe post-punk fire: the pile-driving title track, wrapped in a gurgling sound collage, pummels a JPJ bass riff with a "sick guitar solo" by the Surfers' Paul Leary. Jones reclaims Zeppelin as his own even as he transcends it."Snake Eyes," an eerie blues epic arranged with orchestral strings around Jones's superb organ playing, suggests "When the Levee Breaks" filtered through Igor Stravinsky or Bernard Herrmann; and you can't miss the echoes of "Trampled Under Foot" in the bass figures of "B. Fingers." The instrumental Zooma reinforces Jones's integral role in Zeppelin, his influential and still vital bass playing, and his...well, balls. --James Rotondi

Led Head Gets Schooled..........2007-07-23
The post-projects by Plant & Page have been extremely hit & miss, but THIS...wow.
From the first seconds of the first track I was rivoted and kept upping the volume. Like a sonic cannon, JPJ comes into the ring swinging haymakers and shattering the deafening silence of all of these years of being behind the scenes with producing.
I admit I was first introduced to this as a DJ at an FM station years back with a promo single, but I was way too into Marilyn Manson, Tool & NIN at the time to hear it with the hungry ears like I have now. Lately only newer Jeff Beck and vintage Miles Davis have been this satisfying to listen to.
Crimson/Levin fans take heed - there's an OLD sheriff in town, and his guns are swift & true.
Play At "11" , anger the neighbors and be baptised by this man's continuing fire.

At last a good post Zep Album.......2006-06-08
For the first time in too long I heard an album that was different and diverse. And with no one telling him what he can't do you get to see what a good bassist he is.
This album is essentially instrumental. It features diverse styles from the simple and obviously titled "Bass 'n' Drums" to complex pieces with all sorts of guitars and other instruments I don't even recognise. My only small niggle with the music is some of the "noisier" tracks sound a little too brash to my ears.
Unlike most of everything from the Page/Plant catalogue which were listen once and forget, this album is not one to forget. JPJ earns a genuine 5 stars.
Mastering of the CD is, by late 1990's standards, very typical, which means by 1990 standards it sucks. Lots of soft limiting. If you have no idea what I'm talking about google "Loudness War" for the Wikipedia entry. We consumers sure are suckers!
Anyway - got to find a copy of Thunderthief now!
The Zep pulse and mind.......2006-03-20
Not the most accessible to classic rock fans - but its not supposed to be!.......2006-01-27
John Paul Jones - half the titanic rhythm section of Led Zeppelin finally released this solo release in 1999. Its an impressive, sprawling, brutal, heavy and carries on a Zep style vibe much more than Page or Plant have ever come close to.
It is also not accessible to many. Lacking vocals and a huge lead guitar presence some would call it "incomplete" or overly repetitive. It is nothing of the sort. It may seem so, but thats because when you strip away vocals and lead guitars the music doesn't seem to vary as much. This CD is designed to be a musician's record through and through. JPJ is the highlight and that he is.
This record I more view as a clinic being put on by one of the most stealth powerhouses in rock. Being a drummer and musician I love it. The instruments rule here, not some preening singer.
My personal favorites on here are the title track, Grind, Goose, Broken Fingers and Nosumi Blues. They all hark back to a day when rock meant something.
There are nice reprieves though. Smile of Your shadow relent a bit as do the nice freeform of Bass 'n' Drums.
My only minor criticism is the sometimes annoying ambient noise that careens over the top of the music. Its an industrial touch in my view does not work.
Overall, this record blazingly throws down. Its varies between good to downright brilliant.
If you want to understand the half of the rhythm section "rock" of Zeppelin. Look no further than this. This shows just how critical along with Bonham JPJ was to Zep.
But be warned, its an instrumental jauggernaut. Its galaxies removed from Plant solo - Thank God.
