Stabbing Westward have always had a mix of industrial overtones and crashing power chords at their disposal, but their self-titled fourth album focuses on their melodic side. Opting for less electronic coloring this time out, they lean in a modern-rock direction that's balanced against their signature dark, haunting style; here, songs that start off heavy and gloomy swell into catchy choruses. The hypnotic "So Far Away" has a psychedelic edge while "Perfect" serves up acoustic guitars and layered harmonies. "I Remember" and "Happy," while lyrically reflective, ultimately come across as airy, upbeat rockers. The compelling, downright disturbing closer, "Television," takes an ambient route. But elements of their earlier sound remain in the likes of "Wasted," "High," and "The Only Thing." Ultimately, Stabbing Westward is the kind of album that strikes a neat balance between keeping old fans happy while drawing in new partisans. --Gail Flug

5 out of 5 stars I've been searching for this CD for a long time and couldn't find it.......2006-08-31

This CD is awesome, by far Stabbing Westward's best CD. I'm very happy to have it back in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars If you own ANY stabbing westward CD, make it DARKEST DAYS!.......2006-03-07

This album is damn near perfect, and as I type that I might as well take out the 'damn near' part and leave it as just plain perfect, because quite frankly, it is! From start to finish this album is what you want to hear. From the creepy into in the effect of "DARKEST DAYS" to the moving and ultimatly depressing "WAKING UP BESIDE YOU", a beautiful song about loss and dispair, you are drawn inside this album of the darkest nature, an album that explores subjects like death and adiction with such care and presision that you can't help but appreciate the talent behind every riff, behind every lyric and behind every single track. Standouts are the singles "SAVE YOURSELF" and "HAUNTING ME" as well as the steller "SOMETIMES IT HURTS", a song so truthful (as far as conveying the feelings after loseing a loved one in death) that I was actually braught to tears after hear it. "EVERYTHING I TOUCH" was actually the first song I ever heard by this band, and I was immediatly convinced that this was a CD to own. "THE THING I HATE" is one of the most in your face angry songs ever and it delivers the adrenaline rush that metal lovers need while listening to this album which overall gives you more of a downer feeling (it's mood music people) so it's nice to have a MOSH-PIT perfect song. "HOW CAN I HOLD ON" and "WHEN I'M DEAD" are standouts and worth a listen, but then again, so is this ENTIRE ALBUM SO BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars best thing i ever have in my life.......2006-02-26

i did not say that it is the best one.there are a lot of better out there.but i had this one in my darkest day.it fits my mood well at that time.i shall say it saved my ear and my heart.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2005-11-28

In the wake of Nine Inch Nails in the 90's, SW is arguably the best band that used a similiar approach to the angry, sad mood in music. Darkest Days, which was their best release, is very catchy but it also gets to you on an emotional level, especially if you're going through something difficult, or if you're just unsatisfied with the way your life is going (*raises hand*). My favorite song on this album by far is 'Waking up Beside You', it's got a great riff and the vocals are good as well. Most people know the single from this album 'Save Yourself', which is good but certainly not among the best. 2nd favorite track on the album is probably 'Haunting Me' or 'Goodbye'.

I havn't listened to their newer self-titled release but from what I hear they turned into some type of happy-go-lucky frat-boy band, and then broke up. What a shame. if you enjoy this I reccomend NIN (obviously), and Tool.

5 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED INDUSTRIAL BAND!.......2005-10-30

This is my all-time favorite band to bad they broke up.
but they have a different sound and there lyrics are meaningful
i can sit here and judge millions of bands that sound like them but wouldnt. they dont stand out like stabbing because of the sound.thats the only thing that matters. i am a big fan of dark eerie melodic tones and strings.this gives you everything i wanted to hear.
great pace great to eliviate stress.

the best song is: save yourself probably the best song of the last decade.overall i give this baby a 5/5 a underrated transcending masterpiece that only i can appreciate since they dont get any recogntion.

let me say this to stabbing westward thank you for changing my life and inspiriing me to live life free. thank you bro

Dark lyrics along with great arrangments and a solid rhythm section, you get Stabbing Westwards' second album, the immensly popular 'Wither,Blister,Burn & Peel'. Every song is very well crafted with heavy parts, quiet parts and just rocking parts. Every song back to back is very solid with absolutly NO fillers. Many sing along pieces and catchy riffs through out. A definite addition to anyones collection.

3 out of 5 stars to D. Girod "graboidz" review.......2006-07-17

for that guy to somehow play off that industrial has some sort of formula thats more tired than any other form of music is frustratingly ignorant. the guy obviously just doesnt like industrial and is about as qualified to review an industrial album as my grandfather is to review an outkast album. industrial didnt die off because the formula grew tired, its in my opinion that industrial has much more room to evolve than heavy metal or punk or goth. it died off because there are only a handful of bands that knew what it took to make a good industrial album and 50,000 lame bands that had no idea how to handle the technical side of industrial the way that trent reznor, cevin key, and raymond watts do. but i still give this band and album 3 stars because the band is just decent. and not from lack of effort i feel there is at least some honesty there but the lyrics are a bit whiny and very cliched. thats definately my biggest complaint about it. theres definately some good high points and good writing there. but its definately short of being a life changing album. but its trapped in one mood and doesnt really go anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not as good as Ungod and Darkest Days.......2005-09-02

This is pretty solid effort from beginning to end (except for Slipping Away), but except for Shame (which is probably THE best song on the album), Falls Apart and So Wrong the album lacks a lot of the lyrical quality and intensity that Ungod and DD contain. While "What DO I have To do" may have been an MTV buzz clip, I've always thought that the song was somewhat overrated. IS it a good song, yes, but anyone saying that that song is Stabbing Westward's crowning achievement is selling the band short.

Starting an album off with "I'm such an @$$hole" may or may not be a good idea, but if you do, then you better back it up. WBB&P falls short. The lyrics to this album are almost all internally focused. Why talk so much about lyrics? Because that is what really sets SW apart fron other bands..

Yeah the music is good, but it is the lyrics that really make this band.

You won't be dissapointed in buying this album, unless you bought it instead of Ungod or Darkest Days.

5 out of 5 stars Industrial metals finest.......2005-08-31

I was impressed by the coalation of vibrant, aggressive, intence sound of this album, as well as the previous ones.

Any jackass that doesn't appreciate this type of music, or thinks that disco will outlast it; is probably suffering delusions from all the crystal meth they snorted off a urinal while some disco freak was bouncing their ass!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but not great.......2005-05-20

Stabbing westward finally hit the radio waves after the release of latter album Darkest days and got a lot of well deserved attention. Not to mention that the singles (save yourself and the thing i hate) sold pretty well by singles standards. But it seems they forgot about this album which although not quite as complete as the latter has some really good tracks namely What do i have to do and so wrong (Which is also on the spawn soundtrack).I wouldnt say its worth running around for but if you enjoyed darkest days you might just find a track or 2 on here that you like.

5 out of 5 stars Stabbing Westward in all there industrial hard rock glory!!!.......2006-03-26

The first is always the best, well... in this case it is. Stabbing Westward is one my favorite rock bands, its to bad they broke up, but this album in my opinion is their best album. Its much more heavy in terms of industrial rock than the other four albums they did and when you compare it to their last album the band does not even sound same. Chris halls voice is a lot different in this album then the other three albums they did(especially the last album, althought chris's voice is slighly similar between UNGOD and Wither Blister & Peel) My favorite songs in order are THROW, UNGOD, NOTHING, CAN'T HAPPEN HERE, LIES, CONTROL, ACF, LOST and whatever rest tracks that are left are good too. My second favorite Stabbing Westward album is Wither Blister Burn & Peel, then Darkest Days and then their self titled album which i didnt really like, except a couple of tracks.

3 out of 5 stars For Comparative Purposes.......2006-01-27

Listen to this album and Filter's SHORT BUS back to back and hear the similarities. Particularly on "Hey Man, Nice Shot" and "Ungod." You see, Stabbing Westward started with a guitarist, I forget his name, who would leave after UNGOD and join Filter just in time for SHORT BUS. It appears he took his riffs with him.

5 out of 5 stars If this is watered down Nine Inch Nails, .......2005-09-02

then watered down NIN is great.

While probably not their most diverse album (I would give the nod to Darkest Days) this is probably right up there with Darkest Days as their best. If nothing else, it's their most depressing.

Lost, which is pretty much an intro to Control is great, and Control doesn't break the momentum. 'Nothing' would be a heck of a lot better if they rewrote the insessive, 'I don't want it, I don't need it' lyrics (I heard you the first 10 times Chris)..

Acf is a great lead up to the meat of the album, which consists of Lies, Ungod, Throw, and Violent Mood Swings. Throw is by far the best track on the CD. An angst riddled, depressing song that just never seems to let up.

Red and White and Can't Happen Here bring the tone of the album down to an even more depressing state. In fact, by the end of Can't Happen Here, you pretty much really don't want to do anything except listen to the CD again...

So do yourself a favor.. Go ahead and buy this CD. If you don't want to listen to it know, put it away until that 'special little lady' rips your heart out, throws it on the ground and stomps all over it. Then get it out and play it. Will it help? No. Will it make you feel any better? No, but it will give you a better excuse for being so d@mn depressed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Industrial albums of the 90's.......2005-07-19

I first saw the video for the song "Nothing" on Much Music in mid 1994. IN the summer of 1994 I found the CD (I was poor) in a second hand CD shop and bought it immediately. This was a few months after having seen the Nothing video ONE TIME ONLY - but from the video I knew I liked the sound. I liked NIN, Ministry, PWEI and this sound was right along those lines.
Boy am I glad I picked this CD up. It was stunning. I do like some of Stabbing Westward's other albums tremendously but this one takes the cake. It really is a powerful journey that flows nicely from start to finish with extremely catchy floor-pounding songs. Yes that's right floor-pounding. The way this album was recorded is perfect. If you like the thundering bass of Tool's "Undertow" or Rage Against The Machine's eponymous debut then you'll love the levels the kick drum and bass are recorded on this album. Very nice and deep to give your subs a true workout without being intrusive of the rest of the music.
Naturally this CD is best played loud! :-)
From the beginning you can see why there are comparison's to Nine Inch Nails' Pretty Hate Machine and Broken EP releases. It is wise to keep in mind though that Ungod was released on February 15th, 1994 whilst The Downward Spiral was released a few weeks later on March 8th, 1994 - so there's no logic in saying anything on Ungod was borrowed from Trent's Spiral.
The album's intro leads to Control which opens with a machine gun barrage of guitar and drums. The verse hits you with hardly any guitar but great synth sounds and a bass line to die for that gives new meaning to the saying, "bass - how low can you go?" Hearing this first song Control really let me know I was in for a treat with this record.
Nothing, which was Stabbing Westward's first ever single, is probably my least favourite song on the album. It's not bad but the rest of the album I think was far better.
ACF, Lies and Ungod blend so well you will no doubt listen to them through quite a few times in this order. Lies and Violent Mood Swings are the flat out heaviest songs on the album. I fond myself squeezing a fist when I listen to Violent Mood Swings, it really is a very danceable yet "kick you in the teeth" kind of song. Red and White seems to borrow a little from "Help Me I Am In Hell" by NIN but has much more to the beginning of the song (including lyrics)
The final track on the album, Can't Happen Here, is my absolute favourite. This song is just perfect and I have no doubt even now that to add or remove anything from this song would be to ruin it. Just when you think you're approching the end of the album the band comes exploding through your mind with the refrain "It just can't happen here." What I really love about this refrain at the end is they don't ruin it by only playing it once or twice - it comes at you a good eight times! The drums are perfect and if you don't find yourself with a body full of taut tendons then you weren't really listening. This is the most powerful song off the album. Isn't that one of the best ways to end an album? To start strong and finish strong? You may feel almost out of breath at the conclusion of this album, which is why the three bell-tones to end the album give you that brief cool down!
I was fortunate enough on October 24th, 1994 to see Stabbing Westward open up for Killing Joke at The Opera House in Toronto, Ontario. They were touring their first album and their show was so powerful. I think I was the only person at the show to have a Stabbing Westward t-shirt on but by the end of their set I think everyone had the name Stabbing Westward on their minds.
This is truly one of the better albums of the 90's. Do yourself a favour and check it out particularly if you like Stabbing Westward's other material. You will not be dissappointed with this purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Good........2004-04-23

Frequently compared to Nine Inch Nails--who are themselves only a shadow of the true industrial genre cast on the pop world--this band is pop-industrial at best. They're a band for the 13-17 age group who are consumed by self-centered angst.

"Ungod" is unquestionably this band's best release. The quality of their albums has steadily diminished with each release, until finally reaching the abysmal nadir of their self-titled CD, which is utterly unlistenable. Still, their first effort shows some true creativity and a glimmer of the uncompromising, challenging ideal that is industrial.

The rest of the reviewers need to be educated on the definition of 'industrial'. The fact that nobody has ever posted a similar denunciation here is evidence that people who know what industrial is do not listen to this music. Needless to say, you see my comments here because I have a soft spot for this worthy attempt at something big.

5 out of 5 stars This is a hard one to review..........2006-06-07

Ok, I agree that this CD is very unlike what we've all come to expect Stabbing Westward to produce. It's nothing at all like discs such as Ungod and Darkened Days. In that sense it falls short. But it you listen to it as just a CD and not as a specific band then it leaves little to be desired. This is hard for some because some people throw themselves into one category of rock. I like everything from Jack Johnson to Slipknot, so I have a fairly broad spectrum and I love this disc. Beautiful melodys, wonderful acoustic guitars, and solid lyrics fill the album. It shows them abandoning the typical indrustrial style lyrics and cliches and adopting something a little different. I'll always love SW classics like "What Do I Have to Do?," "Save Yourself," and "You Complete Me," but this CD has it's high points too such as "So Far Away," "Wasted," "Angel," and "Television." I couldn't give this CD less than five stars, even if it's not the typical SW style. A great CD for them to go out on in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums Ever?... I Think So.......2006-01-30

Wow. Wow. WOW! This is one of my favorite albums along with Fear Factory's "Obsolete", Cold's "A Different Kind of Pain" and Enya's "Memory of Trees". This is an amazing album from an amazing band that everyone should buy. It's a crying shame that Stabbing Westward aren't with us anymore, but at least they left us with an incredible album. The songs on here are incredibly emotional and they all paint amazing pictures in my head. They blend acoustic guitars in almost all of the songs on here, but they still manage to rock hard as well. Buy this album now!

3 out of 5 stars Not up to Stabbing Westward's high standards.......2005-09-02

One of Stabbing Westward's strengths has always been their lyrics. Whether it be the depressing lyrics of 'Darkest Days', the 'why did you $crew me' lyrics of Throw, the 'oh how I hate you' lyrics of On Your Way Down, or the 'God how I miss you' lyrics of Waking up Beside You, the lyrics were what drew you in.

Yeah the music was for the most part great, but it was the lyrics that really hooked you.

Their Self Titled album is no different, except the lyrics really don't compare to their earlier releases. So Far Away is classic SW, but Perfect and I Remember are pretty weak. Wasted, The Only Thing, and High are great and Breathe You In, is OK, unfortunately they are sandwiched around Happy and Angel. As for Television, why this was even put on the album is beyond me. While not a bad song, it is almost like they had room for one more song so they threw this one on.

The bonus CD has acoustic versions of So Far Away, and Wasted, even though the songs listed are So Far Away and Perfect. Not that I'm complaining, an accoustic version of Perfect probably would be far from it.

So if you are looking to pick up some Stabbing Westward this is probably not were you want to start. I would recommend Darkest Days or Ungod, and even Wither, Blister, Burn and Peel is better then this. (I guess I just indirectly state dthat this is their worst album.) Is this a bad album? No, but it is far from being classic Stabbing Westward.

5 out of 5 stars Someone Got Happy.........2005-07-21

This is the album that got me into the wonderful music experience that is Stabbing Westward. I remember the day I got it, I had my mom listen to it and when she went up to pay for it, she told the cashier "Quick, before he decides to get something that's screamy and hard!" Jokingly, of course. This album, though definitely softer than all their other efforts, contains just as much amazing artistry.

Christopher Hall is a magician with his voice and that is obvious with every song. His voice is the most important instrument in this release, I think. Just the range of emotion he manages to convey is amazing. His voice truly shines on this album.

Though not the hardest, and in my opinion, not the best Stabbing Westward album, you would be missing out if you didn't own it. To the person that said "If you're a real fan, you'll be disappointed," this band is my favorite, and I wasn't disappointed, even after hearing the earlier releases.

Everyone should also check out Christopher Hall's new band, www.thedreamingonline.com

2 out of 5 stars Where did the angst go?.......2005-06-28

So here is what i think:
Somewhere between Darkest Days and this self titled album they all must just magically come to terms with any issues they might have had.
I mean I used to listen to all of SWs albums and think "wow that is exactally how I feel" (of course i was in High School and who isn't feeling alone and islolated at that time) I thought the lyrics were delivered so emotionally (thats what hooked me) and the music was edgy.
The emotion that is shown in the last album is clouded by what feels like a strain to just write some lyrics.
It's not a bad album but if you a true SW fan then you'll be very disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Poor best of for an excellent band.......2006-06-23

I am a big Stabbing Westward fan, and the two middle albums (Wither Blister Burn + Peel and Darkest Days) are among the best I own. That being said, this collection is basically an attempt by SW's *former* label to cash in on their minor success in 2002 on a new label. It's not the first and won't be the last. Needless to say, I doubt the band had much if any input into the selection of tracks, so this would be my selection (coming in at a little over 77 minutes), noting the first letter of the album in brackets:

(U) Ungod (edit)
(W) What Do I Have To Do
(W) Why
(D) Desperate Now
(W) Crushing Me
(U) Nothing
(W) So Wrong

2 out of 5 stars Essential? I don't think so.........2005-08-20

The idea of a greatest hits cd, besides making money, is to expose a band to a broader audience by 'introducing' them to the band's best music. It also gives someone who can't afford to buy all of a band's cds the chance to buy 1 cd and get a lot of good music. This compilation falls short on all accounts.

While this is not a bad compilation, it surely could have been better. And while you while never get exactly what you want on a 'Best of' CD, some of the omissions are glaring.

From UNGOD, they included:
1. Lost
2. Control
3. Nothing
4. Lies

'Nothing' is probably the worst song un UNGOD. How many times do you need to hear Chris Hall sing "I don't want it, I don't need it" And how could they leave off 'Throw'? Lost and COntrol belong and Lies is good, but not at the expanse of Ungod or Throw.

From Wither, Blister, Burn and Peel they included:
5. What Do I Have to Do?
6. Shame
7. I Don't Believe
8. Sleep
9. Crushing Me

Hello? What about 'Falls Apart' and 'So Wrong'. The only "Essential ' song on this list is Shame, although 'Crushing Me' isn't bad.

And finally off of Darkest Days:
10. Save Yourself
11. Sometimes It Hurts
12. Haunting Me
13.
14. Torn Apart

No way.... What about How Can I Hold On, You Complete Me, When I'm Dead, On Your Way Down, and Waking Up Beside You? I will take any of these songs over anything on the list except for 'Save Yourself' which really does belong.

So out of 14 songs, they got 4 or 5 right. This is definately NOT the definitive SW collection.

So if you are new to SW, DON'T BUY THIS.. Buy one of the first three albums instead (I would recommend Ungod or Darkest Days), then take out a piece of masking tape, write 'Essential' on it and stick it to the CD cover. You will make yourself a lot happier then buying this.

3 out of 5 stars it's alright.......2005-04-01

i love stabbing westward and this is a nice collection and all...but it looks like this was an attempt to sucker fans out of money with the words "remastered" (coal chamber anyone?). i don't know they'd have to remaster "darkest days" tracks when they still sound fantastic now.

also, the liner notes are not that great. it's a few quotes and a small backstory of the band which any fan already knows. when i think of liner notes...i'm thinking someting that someone in the band wrote that gave a bit more insight into the songs even though not knowing is it's own answer.

i also question why "torn apart" from the spawn soundtrack was included on this when it's been said that stabbing hated that song when it was released in '97. i'm thinking maybe they could've included some other track, but i am at a lost for what. it is nice that did include "dawn" from the "escape from l.a." soundtrack, but the inclusion of it here might make fans just passover that soundtrack (which is fantastic too by the way) since they already own it here.

i'm just wondering why someone couldn't have put together a b-sides & rarities collection coz god knows stabbing has been on a million and one soundtracks and tracking down those discs (which by any indication of the "clerks" soundtrack might make the buyer wary) might be a problem. also it would've been great to own a better quality version of their "iwo jimma" demos.

but alas...
it may never be...
and that is sad.

5 out of 5 stars Best Essential CD I own, and One of My Favorites as well.......2004-07-11

This is the first Stabbing Westward CD I bought, I known of them for a while and always liked them. Then I picked up the "Escape From L.A." Soundtrack from a PawnShop and Fell in love with the first track on it, and it happend to be "Dawn" by Stabbing WestWard, So then I paid a freind to Order Me The Essential Stabbing WestWard and I was a little Dissapointed, because for some reason I was really hoping every single song would sound like "Dawn", but none of them do (Except For "Dawn" of Course), it then took a while for Me to realize The True Greatness of this album, it is absolutly amazing, and is prolly My Favorite Greatest Hits/Essential CD (Also My Rush Greatest Hits!), I love every song on this CD, I'm hoping to get some more soon, So far the only other SW CD I own is "What Do I have To Do?", but it happend to be just a Compilation Disk, But its very good also (Especially for $5), I would recomend this Essential to any Stabbing WestWard fan, but not to the ones who own all or most of their albums, I have heard that its songs off of only 2 albums, but If You have heard SW before, and Can't buy all their CDs (Or The 2 albums these songs are off), then Grab this one, its great...
(Note: They are not NIN rip-offs)

4 out of 5 stars Actually..........2004-06-04

This CD has one song from the self titled cd, Dawn, that song apears on the Jap. Import. Also, If you knew much about SW, you would know that Chris didnt want to become a south beach cali band, and that is what the last cd is, thats why they brook up, and also why only Dawn apears on this cd. you call yourself a fan.

1 out of 5 stars If an ego is all you need..........2003-02-12

If an ego is all you need then the road to rock star success is right around the corner. I recently attended a L.O.R. show in my hometown of Galveston, Tx. Upon leaving the venue, after the second song, I couldn't have been more embarrased to have to admit I was even near or within three hours driving distance of Lights Over Roswell. Give me a break, here you have a band signed to a label and all they can do is vomit out five tracks of mundane "musacal" garbage within three years. If you're thinking of buying this album do yourself a favor, save your money and instead I'll come kick you in the face for thirty minutes for half price. And that would still be better then hearing one note farted out of their speakers.

    Product Description

"Within," a five track demo from England's Apartment 26, is a translucent glimpse into the future of electronic metal. Along with the likes of Gravity Kills, Pitchshifter, and Monster Voodoo Machine this demo finds Apartment 26 mining the creative amalgam of heavy guitars and electronic beats with great success. Lyrically, the band is intentionally ambiguous. Biff's vocal delivery is varied enough from track to track as well as within in each track to keep the listener interested. Contents: 1) Apt. 26 2) Dystopia 3) Slicedbeats 4) Random Thinking 5) Question of Reality

4 out of 5 stars "I get put in the back in the discount rack...".......2005-11-04

"...like another can of beans." -- Billy Joel

No, I don't mean that as a put down; but I can answer the question of why this compilation was released: "What Do I Have to Do."
Stabbing Westward fans will quibble over which tracks should have been here as opposed to others, as they do with "The Essential" collection. But when it comes to actual airplay, it's rare if you hear anything but this title track on mainstream radio. This disk is manufactured for those people who know nothing about SW except this one actually played "hit".
Likely, you will find it stocked in grocery stores, dollar stores and other like places who have the traditional "5.99" CD rack on their sales floors. And though SW is too great an artistic force to be truly "one hit wonders", that is what the general public thinks they are, hard as this may be to accept. Because, let's face it, to the industry who publishes chart positions, commercial success is all that matters.
But, really, almost any Stabbing Westward is good, and a discount disk like this one can do much to introduce a great band to an even wider audience, who may then seek out their back catalogue.
If your looking to explore Stabbing Westward without shelling out a lot of cabbage, this will do nicely.

3 out of 5 stars An odd sampler of Stabbing Westward's first three albums.......2005-07-05

I'm not exactly sure what the point of this collection is. The track listing doesn't really qualify it as a greatest hits album. It was also released several months after the Essential Stabbing Westward, which further confuses it's purpose.

The choice of tracks is very odd. The band's third album, Darkest Days is overemphasised. 5 of the tracks on this are from that album. There are also two tracks from the band's debut, Ungod, and three from their sophomore effort, Wither Blister Burn & Peel. There is nothing from their eponymous swan song album. There are also no rarities included. The choice of tracks is odd, because it looks like they just took random songs from the albums, as some singles are left off.

One thing this disc does have in it's favor is the very low price. $8 for 10 songs is a very reasonable price. The songs are also good, but Stabbing Westward's albums were pretty solid, so that's no surprise.

I think I would just recommend getting the albums instead of this, or if your a casual fan just get the Essential Stabbing Westward. This is just for completists.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great CD, the band's best work, even if edited.......2001-03-20

It is obvious that Stabbing Westward's music has greatly grown and matured ever since their original CD; "Ungod". "Wither Blister Burn & Peel" was a great follow-up, but this album is the band's best work. I was actually very surprised to read many fan's reviews, saying that this album wasn't as carefully put together and didn't have the same energy or power behind it.

If you listen closely to the lyric's of the songs, the general flow of the music, and the way the songs are structured, you will notice that the album is essentially written in four parts. Similar to the rest of Stabbing Westward's work, the CD focuses on relationships and where they go wrong. The other theme present is how we mess up in life and how to get back on the right track. A very depressing album.

The first four songs focus on how we mess up in life and the terrible, threatening mistakes we make. "Darkest Days" is a great opening song, makes great use of the band's percussion and Chris Hall's emotional lyrics. Second is "Everything I Touch", a powerful song discussing how he ruins everything he gets involved with. Afterwards are (in my opinion) the two best songs on the album. "How Can I Hold On? (Dog Attack)" is a fast-paced gothic/industrial tune that gets the adrenaline going. The follow-up is "Drugstore", the most emotionally-charged song on the CD, talking about drug abuse and the influence that people have on each other.

The second portion of the album deals with relationships, specifically the ones that are torn apart by lies, disagreements, etc. "You Complete Me" is really the only upbeat song in this section, and pretty much on the album as well. "Save Yourself", "Haunting Me", and "Torn Apart" are more adrenaline-pumping songs, all strong and fast-paced.

Then, sitting right in the middle is the portion to listen to when you're feeling down, when you've reached that low point in life that's hard to get out of. "Drowning" and "Goodbye" are slow-moving, but no less emotional than anything else on here. But the real standout's in this section are "Sometimes It Hurts" and "Desperate Now".

Wrapping the album up is the most emotion-filled, most powerful portion of the entire album. The theme behind it is standing behind your beliefs in life. The pure anger and violence in "When I'm Dead" and "The Thing I Hate" makes them some of the best industrial tunes out there. "On Your Way Down" uses skillful guitar playing and lyrics, which refer to how celebrities screw people over in life to get to the top. The closing track on the album, "Waking Up Beside You" is enough to bring a lot of people to tears. This song rises above the majority of the rest of the band's work.

Although the album is split into four general themes and sections, it also has the capability to flow through as one theme, a strange talent that is rare to find in a CD and a band itself. I strongly recommend this, and anything else by Stabbing Westward, to anyone who likes hard rock and industrial. Even though this version of the album is edited, it's a small price to pay. The lyrics really aren't all that explicit in the first place, so the power, energy, and meanings of the songs are not lost.

5 out of 5 stars Please dont miss this album.......1999-09-11

I hate ungod, i think that is such a bad album, but this album, Darkest Days, is so amazing i cannot even describe it. Almost every song on this album speaks to you. I mean i can really feel the emotion behind each song, there are no bland, pointless songs just put in to take up space. This might be the best album i have ever bought and i would (obviously) stongly suggest you buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars this c.d rocks.......1998-09-15

I've liked Stabbing Westward every since i heard their first album wbb&p the lead singer has always wrote music that represnted his true feelings. It's scary because the last person who got this deep was Kurt Cobain and we all know what happened to him.GREAT C.D,I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars This Cd is incredable!!!! The Music and Lyrics both kick!!.......1998-06-13

This Cd is great!!! Musiclly it is like nothing else I've heard before. Stabbing Westward expresses emotion like no other group I've listened to. You can feel what they must have been feeling when they wrote these songs. The emotion of it grabs you and dosen't let go. Their last CD had the theme of "Can I live without you?" and this one answers it with a resounding "Yes I can!!!" My only complaint is That I didn't know there were two versions. If I had I would've bought the explicit lyrics version.
