Paul Westerberg often cited the Faces as a major influence on the Replacements, and it's easy to see how careening barroom rockers like this 1973 album's "Borstal Boys" made a dent in the aesthetic that produced "I.O.U." and "Takin a Ride." More than anything, though, Westerberg was affected by the late Ronnie Lane's closed-door weepers ("Flags and Banners" and dejected apologias ("Glad and Sorry"). Rod Stewart also essays a sensitive moment or two, notably on the single "Cindy Incidentally," which nearly equals "You Wear It Well" as a masterpiece of the heartfelt affection he once commanded so effortlessly. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for the Faces' swan song .......2007-01-24

Actually, the song "Ooh La La" is sung by Ronnie Wood, not Ronnie Lane, as stated in the review below. Wood did share vocals with Lane on "Glad and Sorry." Although "Ooh La La" is a Lane song -- Lane first tried singing it, and then Stewart tried, but they fought over which key to perform the song in -- that's when Wood stepped in and sang it, and it's the best Ron Wood vocal ever, hands-down.
A 4.5 star record from one of the greatest bands of all time. The title track alone is worth the 10-dollar asking price. It's possibly the Faces' greatest studio cut, even greater than the popular "Stay With Me," although "Stay With Me" has a better bass line. Had the Faces stayed together - Lane quit soon after this 1973 LP came out - they would have suprassed the good Rolling Stones. The Faces had three great writers in Lane, Wood and Stewart, and Jones and McLagan also were good at composing, whereas the Stones only utilized two writers most of the time.

Enjoy! The "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar" box set is worth it, if you want to get more than one Faces disc and see what this terrific band was like ....

4 out of 5 stars Not their best, but...........2006-07-16

When I got this cd in the late 90s I had read only negative comments about it and am glad to say the album is better than I had been led to believe. Recorded when the relationships among Rod and the rest of the lads were kind of strained due to the former's fading interest in being with the group, the material is better than you could actually expect.

To me, the only weak song is My Fault.Silicone Grown has nonsense lyrics but fortunately the musical part wins over. Cindy Incidentally is a brief (as all of them) yet cool song, Flags and Banners is a Ronnie Lane song and Borstal Boys makes you wanna get up and rock. In fact, my favourite rocker on the cd.

Fly On The Ointment is very good indeed. An instrumental most people choose to ignore but that it's very good. Its title may hint at the unrest inside the group. The following three songs are clearly Lane's stuff despite the credits. It actually surprises he wouldn't song all of them if he'd written them. Ooh la la is awesome, a stylistic departure for the band that fits in perfectly. Woody does a good job of singing it. Ronnie Lane might have sang it too but for some reason passed on it.

To sum up, not their best album but not a throwaway either. It's a shame that the once great Rod Stewart has fallen so low ever since. What a waste of talent.

5 out of 5 stars Music that is misssing.......2005-08-29

Not to be misleading the title
NOTHING is missing from this LP it is missing from the current music scene

By far this & Nod and just the perfect match so they =one brilliant 2 LP set for me

The first Faces LP sit covers and protected for those days I just need to Look at it and remember when music was FUN
No I can not take out my first LP with the moving faces it is to priceless in my heart
a Brill LP in a category on its own -"Three Button" is Rod discovering his VOICE and how well it fit with softer rock

No question GET this CD better still if you are new the romance of the Faces get "Five guys walk into" and discover gems and more

4 out of 5 stars ****1/2. One of their best and most consistent.......2005-06-12

This is the Faces' tightest album, filled with rough, tough three-minute rock n' roll songs. The arrangements are the best you'll find on any Faces record, and the songs are more varied than usual in mood and tempo, spanning ballads, hard rock, piano-driven boogie rock, and acoustic folk-rock.

Ian McLagan plays wonderful boogie piano on the swaggering rockers "My Fault" and "Borstal Boys", and Ron Wood's muscular guitar playing on the mid-tempo groove of the classic "Cindy Incidentally" and the good-time barroom boogie of "Silicone Grown" is some of his best and most focused playing on record.
And even the lesser-known songs are excellent, like the superbly melodic "Just Another Honky" and the acoustic title track.

This collection of songs is the best you'll find on any Faces album (well, alongside "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink..."), and "Ooh La La" is a must-have for Faces fans, hardcore and casual alike.
4 1/2 stars - highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars A train wreck of an album.......2005-05-03

As a kid The Faces were my favourite group, that is until they released this train wreck of an album. At the time the band was imploding, wih Rod preparing to persue his solo career exclusively and Lane (God love him) preparing to quit the group.I can't believe people here gave it such high marks. The best thing about this album was that it was mercifully short at just under 30 minutes. The next best thing was the trick cover. Actually the one thing I like about it was Ronnie lane's too brief efforts, especially the title track, which unfortunately is sung by Ron Wood and not by Lane. The group's heart just wasn't in the album, and Stewart at the time complained that they couldn't play a lot of this material live without stuffing up the songs. At their best an enjoyable group, this was their low point, and they were never able to recover. Save your hard earned. It's pretty 'orrible, unfortunately.

Blossom Dearie's second Verve album appears on CD for the first time here. This September 1957 quartet date with guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Jo Jones puts Dearie front and center on a selection of 12 tunes cannily designed to put across both her innate musicality and a winningly innocent sexuality, which peaks on the Cole Porter title track. Also completely winning are versions of songs as well known as "Just One of Those Things" and "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and as obscure as "Bang Goes the Drum (And You're in Love)." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars It will resonate with your heart.......2004-03-16

Why I bought this album:
I first heard the song "Try your Wings" from the movie "My Life without Me" (great movie by the way)

I liked the song so much, I bought ~$800 of speakers so i could do her voice justice.

(just listen to the 30sec sample when it's 2am in the morning after 2 glass of Merlot, you will probably agree)

The rest of songs are pretty good too.

I have no idea why she is not well-known as Ella or Diana Krall.

4 out of 5 stars A good one.......2000-09-19

A female jazz singer friend of mine claimed that every fan she knew of Blossom Dearie was a man. I can see how Dearie's winsome kewpie-doll voice might have a particular attraction for the opposite sex; yet in my experience just about anyone, of either sex, can get hooked on her work. This is a good album, if not quite Dearie's best: _Once Upon a Summertime_ is the better disc, with its classic renditions of ballads like "Manhattan"; yet this disc, despite the sprinkling of novelty numbers & its lighter (indeed, often frisky) feel, is also worth a listen. "Just One of Those Things" is an excellent uptempo rendition, showcasing Dearie's good sense of swing, & there's many worthwhile resuscitations of little-known tunes like "I Walk a Little Faster" & "Let Me Love You". I'm a little less keen on the French-themed tunes like the title track or "The Riviera", with their rather brittle wit; yet "Plus Je T'Embrasse" is charming. -- Jazz singing, like jazz playing, has never been about just technique--Dearie, like Billie Holiday or Helen Merrill or Mose Allison, shows how intrinsic intelligence, emotional nuance & musicality can beat out stellar pipes anytime.

5 out of 5 stars Ooh la la-la-la.......2000-02-26

Its a delight to hear Ms. Dearie's coy babydoll delivery of standards that are usually associated with Dinah Washington's brass or Eartha Kitts come-hither growl. How can such a smart cookie still be so audibly blonde?

5 out of 5 stars Simply irresistible.......1999-12-26

An excellent easy-listening jazz album performed by a unique singer. Her high-pitched, sweet and half-naive, half-spicy vocals, as well as the spare piano-based arrangements exquisitely enhance an original repertoire which is in general quite far from "the same as usual" standards. Blossom conveys a great tenderness in ballads as "Try you're wings" or "They say it's spring" and swings extremely well in songs as "Between the devil and the deep blue sea" or the title track. And she can also be so sexy in the cabaret-ish, French-language "Plus je t'embrasse", one of my favourite tracks. Charming!

4 out of 5 stars A must have for any Blossom Dearie fan.......1998-09-23

Many songs here highlight Miss Dearie's unique voice and character. You can't help smiling as you listen to this cd. Then again, any Blossom Dearie cd will do that to you. Original liner notes accompany the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Valeria HAS potential.......2004-03-31

Valeria is an actress and a singer wich is influience for a lot of languages, she speaks English(of course),French and Spanish. As an actress she has worked in "Sister Act 2" and "Just Married",she will be in a new movie in 2004 called "Isla Bella" and she also has worked in a comedy show.
As a singer she has released two singles "Ohh la la" and "Rhythm of The Night" both are flavoured songs with a latin sounding, and extremelly catchy. The video for "Ohh La la" is very fresh and she looks amazing.Maybe "Ohh la la" it's a song with not a great meaning, but this song was made for dancing and spending a great time with it.You can hear this song million times but you always will hear something new.She has a very nice voice. She was supossed to release her first album "Freshly Squeezed" but i think it didn't.I can't found her album anywhere, even in internet i can't found it.And it's a shame because she co-wrote 6 of the 8 songs on the album and all of the songs are upbeat,no ballads.I hope i can found someday her album to give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great song!.......2002-02-04

Valeria has a great voice. This song is perfect with latin flavours.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great song!.......2002-02-04

This is a great song! And very fresh too! Valeria is a great singer and dancer. And she sings really well.

        2 out of 5 stars Ooh...I Mean Oh.......2001-08-06

When female pop sensation meets latin girl, you see Valeria. Ooh La La isn't a very good song if you ask me. I think that she has childish lyrics and her songs are very low class. Sorry guys, by Valeria isn't very good. Since looks are diseving, you won't like this.

        1. Ooh La La - Teenie bopper song. Low class lyrics with teenage girl seeking record deal voice. Latin song. More of a Brittney Spears than a Shakira. 1/5 stars.

2.I Think I'm In Love - Latin song as well. Better than Ooh La La. But still not very good. 3/5 Stars.

As I said, not a very good single. You can do better Valeria.

This isn't that bad. it's not THE best, but......

Ooh La La is a pretty good song! Catchy, but the lyrics aren't that great. Intermediate.

I Think I'm Falling In Love is Latiny, as another reviewer also mentioned. Catchy, again, but also, again, it's intermediate.

I'll probably get the upcoming album, if there is one!

            3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-16

I absolutely ADORE Matt Wilson and John Munson too...but, this was a disappointment to me. John's voice sounds strong, but Matt's sounds weak and strained. I truly love 'em, but found this to be a disappointment, which breaks my heart because I wanted to love it.

4 out of 5 stars simple, honest, good songs.......2006-06-12

it's great to hear matt wilson's songs stripped down in this form, live in front of an intimate crowd. and john munson's upright bass compliments the songs amazingly. wish I could have caught a flops show while they were playing out!

            4 out of 5 stars One problem.......2004-09-20

I absolutely ADORE Matt Wilson and John Munson, and thus I am a Flops fan. I probably would've given this album 5 stars, except I read the story the other evening and... oh, I feel so mean saying this, but it just wasn't good at all! The writing leaves so much to be desired, the plot wasn't that interesting, and the style (grammar, spelling) was pretty inconsistent. It doesn't add anything to the story.

Other reviewers have pointed out that this album is somewhat unpolished and that the songs aren't anything new. Well, yes, this is a cd of a live concert! The songs are mostly Matt's, and they're fun to hear live and with John. Things are occasionally rough or out of tune, but, you know, if you love John and Matt, you'll get past that.

So, to sum things up, the Flops=good, the story=bad. Buy the cd, submit to the Flops, and leave the story cd in the packaging indefinitely.

4 out of 5 stars The Flops are fun.......2004-03-15

The Flops' album is as quirky and as delightful as I had hoped. Ooh la la has quite a few songs from the Wilson/Munson musical vaults, and although the album is not exactly original in that respect, the sound and feel of the album is different from previous works. The sound seems more mellow than the Trip Shakespeare recordings, and it is quite enjoyable to hear a new take on old favorites. Ooh la la is a nice re-introduction to these two musicians.

1 out of 5 stars Intentionally bad, and they succeeded!.......2003-12-03

Apparently, the flops were conceived for a movie. I have not seen the movie. I've only listened to the CD. The premise of the movie is that the flops are bad. This CD reflects that.

I'm a huge Matt Wilson & Trip Shakespeare fan. This CD contains his often silly lyrics, except that they are intentionally meaningless and so are just a string of weird phrases. The music is also intentionally sub-par. It might have worked for the movie, but it's not worth your money or time to listen to this CD.

I'm sorry I didn't have better news because I really wanted to hear some good new music from these guys...
