Editorial Reviews
Probably the biggest crime in reissue-land, West Coast singer-songwriter division, would be the absence of any Wendy Waldman on CD. Daughter of a classical composer and professional violinist, Wendy stood out from her more celebrated contemporaries in bringing a schooled sophistication to the country and folk-infused SoCal aesthetic, throwing in orchestral and stylistic twists at many a melodic turn. All that inventiveness didnt help her commerciallynone of these albums chartedbut it did win her intense critical adulation and continuing cries from fans for these five Warner Bros. records, which were reissuing here *with notes supplied by Wendy herself!* A quintet of essential Collectors Choice Music exclusives!

If one needed an object lesson in the fickle nature of Hollywood and its precipitously shifting tastes, one could do worse than to examine the career of the songwriting brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman. After inventing veritable swaths of Disney's musical theme park, TV, and film legacies in the '50s and '60s (including Zorro, The Sword in the Stone, Mary Poppins, and The Jungle Book), the brothers found their talents largely underemployed in TV and film efforts after the death of Walt Disney. It isn't to say that their talents were in the least diminished, as this soundtrack to the 1976 U.K.-produced live-action adaptation of Cinderella ably attests. Fans of the Shermans' Disney canon should find this soundtrack restoration a welcome addition to their collections. The Shermans' music is a familiar, effervescent delight, even as it tackles the full emotional spectrum of romantic and familial entanglements, from Prince Edward's existential ponderings in "Why Can't I Be Two People?" through the king's Gilbert & Sullivan-esque take on royal bureaucracy in "Protocologically Correct" to the romantic pinings of "Secret Kingdom" and "He Danced with Me." The Slipper and the Rose is a musical cult favorite, and for good reason. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
I love this!.......2007-01-14
While all of the songs with words are there, most of the background music is missing. There is the overture and the waltz theme, but no other background music. I was particularly disappointed in the absence of the music from the wedding.
Despite this, I am very glad I have purchased this CD and high recommend it.

The sound recording was well pitched, loud enough to hear, and there wasn't anything fuzzy. This I was very grateful for. I look forward to one day playing it for my daughter so she'll enjoy it to.

Amazon.com essential recording
This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph LanzaCustomer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
Feyer's CD is a must have.......2007-01-28
In the latter 70s, the Stanhope weekends were a joy, buttressed by Feyer's music. He held court and the audience was captivated. He was an excellent pianist with excellent trills in the high octaves, and nice contrast with the lower ones. The Gershwin CD the piece "I Got Rhythm" reminds one of small flames jumping lightly on a log. So light, so elegant, so much in rhythm. I would take my "A" dates to the Stanhope, including my future wife of 20 plus years. After the Met Opera or ballet, I would take my dates to the Stanhope. Usually two Kier Royals, supper, wine, and dessert would accompany George's fine music. Such a rich repertory and bottomless request well that he knew with top piano skill!
Missing on the CD was his singing and funny remarks. I recall him playing `Thank Heavens For Little Girls"... they are so helpless, and then he would pick some women from the audience and repeat the word " helpless' and the everyone would laugh. My dates were the younger women in the Stanhope back then and he tended to look at my dates.....and made them feel like a princess
The Stanhope was a bit expensive but a classy place. With George, it was worth every penny. I think Gunnar ( spelling?) was the head waiter. They knew you and you did not have to ask for a certain drink as they knew your need before your request. Unlike today, waiters are more of errand boys to the kitchens. George also knew your favorites in songs.
One thing that is not obvious, despite my Ivy MBA and a good undergraduate degree, one does not learn in early years the basic American songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc. Some of my dates knew many of the words to these songs from their social events. Hence for me it was a pleasant discovery and made me grateful to the mastery of George. It opened one's appreciation to the very rich music heritage of America.
The CD in ADD format was very clear; no his; and, the accompanying musicians were well heard in CD. Enjoy this CD!

Hendricks proves crossover chops!.......2002-08-20
The Porgy & Bess medley has shown how far Hendricks has come since her first recording as Clara in the mid 1970s. This set from Gershwin's folk opera showcases a versatility of lucious chest tones, bluesy sadness (My man's gone now & I loves you Porgy), energetic jazz (It ain't necessarily so) and soaring high notes (I'm on my way) which blend her worldly operatic training with her childhood of singing gospel and spirituals in her minister father's church.
A wonderful, blended style adds grace to "How long has this been going on?" and "The man I love", but the real charm surprisingly lies in the faster tracks of "Lady be good", "Somebody loves me" and "Fascinating Rhythm." This album is a winner for Hendricks fans, and should prove intriguing to the musical theatre and jazz afficionados as well.
