New York City music pals Matt Verta-Ray and Jon Spencer have joined forces to create one of the strongest works in either of their catalogs. Spencer of course led his own Blues Explosion, after the demise of his earlier Pussy Galore, while Verta-Ray was rumbling about with the similarly inclined Speedball Baby. The two play off each other throughout these thirteen songs with evident glee. Their contrasting vocal styles are heard to great effect on such tandem numbers as "This Day Is Mine." They're joined by a rotating cast of sympathetic players, but it is the strength of their own character and writing that unifies the disc. Sassy, barbed, punchy, and real, they captured each number with rough and tumble perfection. --David Greenberger

In retro terms, this is the perfect party platter for what the B-52's once dubbed a "Party out of Bounds." The raw-edged music represents a blast from the past through the wild frontier of rockabilly, as Jon Spencer (of the Blues Explosion) and Matt Verta-Ray (of Speedball Baby) take a reckless joyride that channels the inspiration of Jerry Lee Lewis and the Cramps. With a warped twang, delirious distortion, and a perpetual leer in the vocals, the stripped-down duo achieve a hopped-up transcendence on "Lover Street" and "The Hump," while showing a more expansive range on "Walking Burn," which brings a bit of a lilt to a world of torment, and the segue of the country-soulful "Fix These Blues" into the majestic "Take My Hand." Prudish ears take note: the playfully suggestive, not quite euphemistic "Gatorade" isn't the thirst quencher sold in bottles. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Return to the limelight - 3.5 stars.......2007-03-17

Old skool heavy rock fans hate this album. They hate the whiff of sellout, the guest appearances like the co-writing with Desmond Child, Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi. They hate the fact that people as varies as Stiv Bator, Steve Lukather and a whole heap of Aerosmith and girlie faves like Kane Roberts and Kip Winger were also features. Particularly in relation to the latter two mentioned, they take umbrage that such third tier types were in posession of bigger profiles than their teenage shock rock idol circa '89.

The simple fact is that this sort of collaboration is exactly what Alice needed to bring him up to date. To bring his legacy to a new generation and the plain truth is that since this album the Coop has never fallen off the radar as badly as he had with dross such as Special Forces and Da.

The worst things that could be said of this album are that it's a cop out with all the extra writers and that it's a shameless sellout. But even a sellout is better than what we'd put up with prior to this release.

But just cos I'm not someone who was 18 when Billion Dollar Babies came out and therefore feel obliged to hate everything that came after doesn't mean I find this album faultess. Far from it. So, IMHO;

- Poison is a great song and a great way to start an album. Other highlights would be Bed of Nails in a cheesy sort of way and Spark in the Dark and House of Fire scoot along quickly enough that you almost don't notice the shaky musical premises their built on. Nicely flowing chorus' on tunes such as This Maniacs in Love With You and the visceral vocal performance of Why Trust You (a little out of place on a disc so smoothly produced by Desmond Child) lift these tunes to at least bog standard level.

- However despite Alice trying to talk it up at the time, Only My Heart Talkin' was never gonna have much impact on the charts. And Hell is Living Without You is filler while I'm Your Gun - well they probably figured that if they tacked it onto the end of the album nobody would notice it. And given the calibre of the songwriters here it's pretty scary they couldn't come upwith at least ten decent tunes.

- Alice Cooper still has something about him on pretty much any release he touches. And his brand of shock rock that at times delved into art rock is here fairly streamlined into mainstream late 80's hard rock. The riffs are clean, the production nice and when it does work it works pretty darn well. For heavens sake even Barry Manilow loving housewives like my mother liked Poison the thing was so darn catchy!

This slice of corporate rock ain't the best Coop product by a fair margin. But it gave him back the commercial impetus to relaunch his career and he subsequently grabbed that chance with both hands so regardless of what the purists may think this is an important album in the mans cataluge, but not always for the music itself.

1 out of 5 stars HIs Worst.......2006-12-15

This was Alice's big comeback album. The single "Poison" got him back on top 40 radio for the first time in years, and the album was a huge success. Cooper was back to playing big arenas in front of sold out crowds. But......I think the album stinks. The music is cliche ridden hair metal and most of the lyrics are just plain stupid. Compared to most of the Coop's other work this dreck just does not hold up.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Coop's best work.......2006-12-15

Good, but not great.

If you prefer your music heavy, get "Brutal Planet" or "Last Temptation" instead. Hell, get both - they rock.

If you prefer your music quirky and less harsh, go with "From the Inside".

If you prefer old school Coop - well then, you probably already know what you like, and don't need my silly advice anyway, do you?

3 out of 5 stars A Decent Comeback with great moments........2006-07-26

This album was mainly Alice Coopers comeback album that got him back on the popular seen. I personally think the album itself does not have the Alice Cooper twist in it, but it has some of my favorite songs in it. POISON - the song that reached # 7 in the u.s. is a great song, Spark in the Dark is another good one, and Bed Of Nails is just amazing. The rest of the album is okay and occaisonally good. But it just has to many guests in it, that have taken over the album i'd recomend the album to people to listen to, but just know it's not really the Alice we love.

5 out of 5 stars If there were more stars to rate this album I'd use them!.......2006-07-11

Trash is Alice Cooper at his heavy metal best! If there were more stars to use to rate this album I'd use them! This album rocks! From the hard core hair metal sound of the music to the poetic genius in his lyrics, there is not a bad song on it, (well, maybe one). His all star line up of hair band rockers such as Jon Bon Jovi, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Tom Hamilton, to name a few, are a lot of fun to hear and blend well with Alice Cooper and his band. I think I read that this is the number one selling A.C. album of all time and "Poison" is still one of my favorite heavy metal songs. Buy this album!

I bought this cd when it came out in 91 but lost it while moving. I loved it from the moment I heard it. The music is very catchy and Dave A's voice is unmatched. Its one of my favs and am happy to own it once again. im a 32 year old musician and this disc still influences the way i play. A truly must have for any music fan!! (wish they would come back)

5 out of 5 stars Great disc.......2006-03-08

This was one of my favorites back in the early nineties. It's now quite a few years later and my tastes in music have broadened but I still love the funky bass, good lyrics, and good use of horns. This recording has definitely stood up to the test of time in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest. . . .......2006-01-07

In all honesty, this has got to be one of the greatest bands to ever get overlooked. This album was, by far, the top of what was available when it was released. There was nothing like it, and has been nothing like it since. The musicianship and satiric lyrics, performed so perfectly, made this album impossible to ignore once you heard it. I would strongly suggest this album to anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Jon Spencer has found his calling.......2006-02-07

I have been a huge fan of Jon Spencer for years and if your like me and have been slightly disappointed in the last couple of records (Plastic Fang, Damage) I mean they arent terrible, they just dont have the edge and replayability of extra width, orange and The Caroline album. This was the revitalization that Jon Spencer needed. I find myself anticipating the next Heavy Trash album much more than JSBX. Its definitely not like The Blues Explosion but its just the right mix of Johnny Brunette, Elvis and Hank Williams combined with a lo-fi modern edge. If you like rockabilly and Gothic Country, completely disregard "Cooljames" comments, this album doesnt say JSBX on it, it says Heavy Trash. By the way, I do agree with the disapointment of 5150 but this aint like that. This album is great!

4 out of 5 stars Oddball rockabilly update.......2005-09-28

Neither Jon Spencer (Pussy Galore, Blues Explosion) nor Matt Verta-Ray (Speedball Baby, Madder Rose) are strangers to '50s rockabilly, but nothing in their catalogs has so purely chased the Sun's slapback fueled sound so fully. Which isn't to suggest this is an exercise in retro reproduction, as the duo's music is influenced by the garage sounds of The Cramps, the bigger-than-life attitude of glam-rock (T Rex, New York Dolls), and is threaded with organ, theramin and other unusual touches. The dominant forces, though, are the duos vocals and their guitars. The drums are lowered in the mix, letting the bass and the guitar strings themselves carry a lot of the beat, and the vocals contain the yelping energy of Charlie Feathers. "Mr. K.I.A." strips the band down to thumping percussion and a Johnny Cash like baritone vocal. "Walking Bum" takes the tempo down to a walk for John Graboff to overlay his pedal steel with Spencer and Verta-Ray twang the low-end of their tremolo drenched guitar strings. "Lover Street" sounds like the Cramps borrowing the slide riff of Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle With You." Interesting stuff - but perhaps not for rockabilly purists! 2 out of 5 stars It's garbage if you liked the Blues Explosion.......2005-09-27

When Van Halen's 5150 album came out, I was 12 years old and was waiting at the mall entrance with my 10-year-old brother to pick up the cassette tape. We bought the tape for something like 8 bucks, rushed home (walkman technology was still quite pricey at the time) and popped it into my boom box. Expecting to hear the Hagarized version of David Lee's 1984, my anticipation peaked as the music started. But wait! The first song sucks. I fast-forward to the 2nd track. No 'Hot for Teacher' drums or 'Panama' stomping guitars? No! 3nd song? It sucks. 4th? Poopies. At this point, anticipation gave way to anxiety. Two songs later, frustration. When the last song on the album didn't even turn out to be an "I'll Wait", I realized what happened. Van Halen went soft, and it's unlikely that they'll make it back.

It's been a while since I bought a Jon Spencer LP. I was a huge fan of Extra Width and still listen to Orange weekly. The repetetive but skillful drums drown out the repetetive but fitting lyrics, and they work perfectly with the experimental mix of groovy heavy guitars, punk rock harmonica, and eerie theremin. Since then, the albums and live shows were routine and repetetive. I saw them for the album that came after "Orange", and then again when they linked up with R.L. Burnside, and the shows were the same. Boring. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's "Orange" record is their "1984". And this Heavy Trash album is their "5150".

Following nearly the same process as my first major musical disappointment, I bought the Heavy Trash album on CD and put it on in the car right away. First song, weak. Second song, soft. I'll save you some reading by wrapping up my opinion: This album is shallow and empty. Even worse, it recycles a lot of Jon Spencer's already-reused lyrics and the guitar work is lame at best. There's nothing valuable on this album. There was so much potential, but I got nothing out of this album.

That's not entirely true. The album cover is really cute and disturbing. The album itself is just disturbing.

5 out of 5 stars do not take out the heavy trash!.......2005-09-24

I heard a song from this CD on a local radio station and was immediately intrigued by the DJ's description of the music style as "Swamp". Dark Hair'd Rider was great, with a rockabilly sound and nifty vocals. When I listened to the rest of the disk after ordering it, I was pleased and I would definitely recommend this one to folks that like this kind of sound. My husband heard one song and promptly put the whole disk on his MP3. Good rockin' dancin' and drinkin' music!

3 out of 5 stars It's Good, But Hollow.......2005-06-08

When I first heard this CD at a listening booth in Sydney's Red Eye Records, I thought Hot-Damn this stuff rocks. The whole new-rock revival started with the 70s and then moved off into the 60s and 80s but no one bothered doing any renaissance work on the old 50s rockabilly.

The first few songs appeared to be so much fun, tunes you could tap your foot to and cause you to slap your knee sporadically with pleasure. I finally bought the CD and gave it a whirl a few times and really enjoyed it. But then it started to ring really hollow. None of these songs have any real staying power.

So in conclusion, this album is a bit of fun, wrench as much enjoyment as you can get out of it and then leave at the back of your collection to accrue a thick, impenetrable skin of dust. Maybe in a couple of years you might excavate it during a spring clean, or house move and give it a couple of extra spins.

This is absolutely terrible. Bad production. Awful awful awful!! They actually re-recorded "Ready To Strike" and butchered it. Stick with the first 2 albums - "Ready To Strike" and "Thrill Of A Lifetime". Even "King Kobra III" if you can find it. I wonder if they even listened to this before it was released? Any of them. The band? The record company? I was very disappointed to say the least.

4 out of 5 stars In Your Face-Angst Ridden Madness.......2007-05-13

Personally, I thought the production was a standout on this release. No instruments get buried, and the vocals come across well. Just a shouted out stream of pissed off energy. Some catchy guitar work and intricate drums in places, but this CD won't be remembered for that. Gotta take in the whole composition, man. Intelligent songwriting, reminiscent of Dead & Gone. They can grind it out too-trust me. Pace is breakneck pretty much throughout, and that's what these guys excel at. Enjoyed this release better than Backstabbers, Inc., actually. Production didn't impress me as much on K.M. as it did with this. I really get pumped listening to this-just wanna crack s**t up, ya know? Excellent CD. Not only do they have something to say, they express it in a very effective way. Can't really compare 'em to anyone, and that should impress. Why would you want to anyway?

2 out of 5 stars Garage-worthy, and very very overrated..........2007-05-01

Kurt Ballou has gone from once being one of my favorite producers, to making me not want to hear another Kurt Ballou recording. Albums like The Hope Conspiracy's Endnote sounded so raging and toneful. All later things like Swarm of the Lotus, later Converge, Hope Con's latest, and now Trap Them sound like indie-rockified garage quality ProTools records. Seriously, every band with a ProTools computer in their practice space is making demos that sound as quality as this. The ancient amp usage, and felty kick-drum does no justice whatsoever. Trap them display a ton of energy, but other than that, nothing really sets them apart from every other sludgy indie-esque band with songs too short to have any intricacy or point of interest. After 3 listens, it was apparent these guys would not be my new favorite band, and it made me wish I had borrowed the disc from a friend instead of purchased the album. It reminds me of the new Pulling Teeth, except with slightly better production, and a little like Cursed. Okay bands if you're in a mood for fast background music.

4 out of 5 stars Digital Disc For Aural Deconstruction.......2007-04-08

Barring three seconds of feedback, "Sleepwell Deconstructor" wastes no time in assaulting your eardrums with a wall of detuned guitars, distorted vocals and punishing blastbeats. The album barely gives you time to breath through the crushing and at times intricate riffs, politically and personally charged lyrics and lightning-fast drums on songs like "Garlic Breakfast", "Collapse And Marathon" and "[...] As Punk". The one brief respite is the Isis-like "Destructioneer Extraordinaire", which slows the pace but not the intensity. The production fits the songs like a glove...a spiked glove that is. This album is tight, loud, angry and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of my personal favorites........2001-08-22

White Trash was, at their peak of popularity, a one-hit wonder ("Apple Pie," from their self titled Geffen debut, was a hit on MTV in 1991.) But they were unfairly trampled by the Seattle invasion, as they were accidentally lumped in with the 80's "hair bands." Their music was better than that, and deserves better. The sound, punctuated by horns and tight percussion, predated "ska-rock" (I refuse to call what a bunch of Orange County white boys blow through as true ska music,) by a good five or ten years. Dave Alvin's unique wailing voice isn't for everyone. But if you turn on this CD right now, it's a refreshing change from all of the Eddie Vedder imitators who infest rock today. Si, O Si, Que? is a rip-roaring collection of fast, addictive rock. If one listens hard enough, they could hear musical stylings from the mid-to-early 90's that weren't really touched on (or ripped off, who knows?) until just a few years ago. It's hard to compare to the first album, because almost all of the band consists of different members and the horns aren't highlighted as often. Basically, it's just a great, underappreciated rock album, and if you can pick this up, it's probably one hell of a bargain.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag with a slightly different style........2000-03-01

From a band that not only seemingly fell into obscurity before its second release (Si o Si, Que?), but one who I could find only vaguely mentioned on the Internet. But thats beside the point. Missing most of their horn section from their first release, White Trash made a follow-up CD which I didn't know existed until nearly six years later (when I had rediscovered their first CD)! The lack of brass takes away from their unique pre-ska feel, but does feature a pop-punk sound (in Minor Happiness), and a dance-themed song (21 Club) that was reminiscent to The Crawl, and of course, their typical funky brand of music (minus much of their original lineup). If you just couldn't get enough of their first (self-titled) CD, get Si o Si, Que? for the first five songs and 21 Club. Otherwise, just stick to their first release.

There's no way you can compare a Gillan album with one of his solo albums. Tormé is a unique guitar player, but without the guidance of good musicians/songwriters he doesn't impress all that much. OK, he may be punk-minded but that doesn't mean that he has to make second-rate music because he's no longer attached to a big hard rock act! His guitar still sounds good but there's much less fire in his playing. The drums are just horrible and that makes it hard for me to listen to this album. The Official Bootleg Live album suffers from the same problem. If this is what "Tormé solo" was meant to be, it sure isn't the stuff Gillan-fans will appreciate. But I think Bernie couldn't care less ...
