Smart shoppers will choose this one.......2007-07-19
Being a Youngbloods fan since the late '60s (and a Jesse Colin Young "solo" fan from the 1970s on), I've never been completely satisfied with his former band's CDs. The sound (that is, the mastering/remastering) was usually lifeless and, in the case of the various "hits" compilations, one or more of my favorite tracks would often miss the final cut.
This 2-disc set from BGO, which presents the band's first three albums in their entirety, solves both problems. The sound has as much punch as the single-disc 2002 comp, "Get Together: The Essential Youngbloods" on RCA/BMG Heritage. Plus, because this 2-disc set covers three full albums, I get several of my favorite tracks that were omitted from that other disc ("Smug" and "Tears Are Falling" to name just two). This 2-disc set also sounds much better than the 1999 release from One Way/BMG Special Products that piggybacked their first album (alternately called "The Youngbloods" or "Get Together") and "Elephant Mountain" on one disc.
The Youngbloods' albums for Warner Brothers in the early 1970s had their moments, but in retrospect the band's best work and strongest songs were on the three RCA albums presented here on these two discs. I agree with the one reviewer who said if "Get Together" is all you desire, then get a less expensive disc to get your one song. (Personally, I don't even think that's their best song, though it remains their best-known one; I'd rate "Darkness, Darkness" a notch or two above it. But I also think their version of "Get Together" is far better than anyone else's.)
John Tobler, a prolific and highly respected pop music historian/writer for several decades now, provides the liner notes.
So here's the upshot of my review: If you're an older fan who listens to the Youngbloods at least periodically and you want an upgrade, this is the CD you want. If you're a younger fan who's at least familiar with "Get Together" and/or "Darkness, Darkness" and you want to delve deeper into their canon, this CD is all you'll need.
Baby Boomers Memories.......2007-05-13
"Darkness Darkness" is one of the all time great songs, and has been playing in my head for 30 years. So when I went looking for it on Amazon and found this RE-Mastered version of the Youngbloods three albums, I was ecstatic. Listen to the samples and you will be hooked.
I rated it a 4 star because obviously you don't get the full benefit of the old stereo mixing, but they did a good job on the remix. I would have given it a 5-star for content and nostalgia and talent alone. Re-mixes are so much better than just Album-to-CD recordings, but still can't quite get the essence and nuances. Priced under $25.00, I'd say you need this for your Memory Lane.
Terrific music...fantastic sound........2007-04-15
First off let me say that the sound quality of this reissue is FANTASTIC. It sounds so much better then my old vinyl and any earlier CD reissue. I gave this 5 stars, but only The Youngbloods first album deserves it. That debut still stands the test of time. The playing and material is as good, if not better, then everything else from the era ('66-'67). The mix of rock, blues and folk music on that debut has the sound of an exciting, stage-honed set. Their second album, Earth Music, would rate 3 stars. Only half of Earth Music sounds as good as their 1st (those tunes sound like they were recorded at the same sessions as the first). The other half of Earth Music sounds like demos and outtakes. Elephant Mountain would only get 2 stars...even though my all-time favorite Youngbloods song comes from that album...the incredible, Darkness, Darkness. There are three outstanding songs on Elephant Mountain....Darkness, Darkness, Beautiful and Ride The Wind...those three are up there with the best The Youngbloods ever recorded. Unfortunitly, the rest of that album has the feel and sound of a band that lost its focus. OK, that being said, I still think this set is a "must-have" for collectors of late 60's and early 70's American music. When The Youngbloods nailed it...they nailed it right to the wall.
Finally, Out with the Vinyl!.......2007-03-18
To those who knew their LPs when they were first released, and knew then that they were better than many of their contemporaries in so-called "folk-rock" -- including the overrated, bloated, boring "does this song ever end!?" "Grateful Dead" -- this is exactly that for which you've been waiting: their first three LPs, complete.
'Nuff said.
And the mastering is excellent.
Though I'll miss their full-sized covers, out goes the worn out vinyl!
Did nothing for me.......2007-03-12
If the Greatful Dead sang a little better, it might sound like these guys, but the Grateful Dead had better songs. I can't say these guys suck, its just not my bag. This could be a treasure to some. Mostly forgettable blues and country. Was pleasantly surprised by "Reason to Believe" (made famous by Rod Stewart). Charlie Daniels produced the 3rd album, which I think I like best from the standpoint of at least trying to break new ground. These guys didn't break any ground, even their definative Lets Get Together is a cover in the vein of Hey Joe (everybody took a crack at it). They probably benefited from the misfires of others before they nailed their great version of this song...but you can probably find it on the Forest Gump Soundtrack and a 100 other places, so don't buy 3 albums just to get it.

Underrated group, overlooked album.......2007-02-22
The Youngbloods were a tremendously underappreciated band. "Elephant Mountain" shows exactly how fresh, witty, clever and versatile they were as a band.
Jesse Colin Young (vocals, bass guitar) provided one of the purest voices in Rock. Lowell ("Banana") Levinger was the instrumental glue that held the band together, excelling on keyboards, guitar, and vibes, among other things. Joe Bauer was so solid and professional that he could have been the house drummer for a jazz label.
"Elephant Mountain" has an invigorating mix of some of Jesse Colin Young's finest ballads ("Darkness, Darkness", "Sunlight", "Beautiful")and some instrumental jamming that allows Levinger to stretch out on keyboards. "On Sir Francis Drake" and "Trillium" are so catchy and smart that more than a few radio programmers must have copped them for program themes. ("Trillium" is named for the three-petaled, white wildflower that graces the back cover of the album).
Some of the tunes are goofs, merely there to provide transitions, like "Turn it Over". "Rain Song", and "Smug" show the Youngbloods jugband roots. Only "Sham" and "Ride the Wind" are done in overtly "West Coast" styles. "Sham" sounds a lot like Country Joe and the Fish, and "Ride the Wind" features the kind of laid-back jamming that "Joy of Cooking" became known for.
Nearly 40 years after its release, "Elephant Mountain" remains a gem of an album, the sparkle of which hasn't dulled in the slightest. It should be in the dictionary, next to the definition of "refreshing".
the most underrated US rock album, ever.......2001-11-28
An astounding record, way too hard to find since its original release. "On Sir Francis Drake" is a very long instrumental that goes from a kind of rock and roll-classic fusion to jazz to midnight blues. And at it's beginning there's a priceless joke rap from the producer, Mr. Charles E. Daniels. (Yes, Charlie Daniels!) "Darkness, Darkness" is probably the blackest song ever written, a scream of despair, but the rest of the songs will cheer you back up, no doubt about it. "Quicksand" is done with a full orchestra that rocks, for a change. Don't miss this one, it was just too complex and eclectic for the tastes of the time, I think,

This music is so beautiful it can make you cry!!!!.......1999-07-13
Definate classic for all time .Makes you wonder why musicians cant see their own talent and lose themselves in such drastic directions.....you are supposed to mellow with age.I can just imagine if they would play all this live now how it would change their souls.....GET TOGETHER.
Any serious connoisseur of classic rock will love this album.......1999-01-08
Elephant Mountain is a delicious mix of folk, jazz and blues. Of special note are "Darkness, Darkness" and "On Sir Francis Drake." All in all it is a mellow, folksy album, but at times the band works up a good, lathery rock-jazz froth. When I first heard the album I was rather surprised at the Youngbloods jam-ability. I had not expected such a willingness to improvise from the makers of a pop hit like "Get Together." This is a solid recording all the way through. I would liken the feel of this album to bands like early Marshall Tucker, Glass Harp, and maybe even Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

MINDBLOWING.......2005-03-17
I bought this LP when it was first released (1967). Then, it was simply named: "The Youngbloods", (I'm referring to the first 11 tracks) It got lost and I tried for 20 years to find it. RCA said it was out of print. It was renamed and re-released "Get Together" for obvious reasons. Every Note on this LP is a true Gem. This is my ALL TIME most favorite LP. You will not be disappointed. A true footstompin', finger tappin' GEM.
More Than Just One Hit Wonders.......2001-01-25
Agreed, BMG certainly did not provide the care in presenting a remastered reissue, not to mention the total lack of historic liner notes, leaving any first time listner clueless as to the orgins and basic facts of this very underated sixties group. However, at a bargin list price ..., you do get two entire unedited albums and two of their best I might add. The Youngbloods scored a major hit with Get Together in '67, however they never cracked the top fourty again. It wasn't due to a lack of effort nor songwriting talent. Whatever the reasons there are some great songs here including the beautiful Sunlight, Ride The Wind and Quicksand. Like so many other great and talented bands of that era, Buffalo Springfield, The Flying Burito Brothers, Moby Grape and others, they'll most likely be remembered as one hit wonders. Truth be told, they were so much more than just "Get Together". This fine collection is evidence of that.
Great music, but NO remastering, NO notes.......2000-06-21
The Youngbloods deserve better than this. This is just the bare minimum for a reissue--NOTHING was done to sonically polish these '60s classics w/digital technology.
There are no notes of any kind, either.
The great music will carry you through, but, as I said, The Youngbloods deserve the loving attention that the Byrds, Velvet Underground, and the Doors, to name just three, have received in CD reissues.

Customer Reviews:
Elephant Mountain is primo! da kine!.......2007-07-25
I always liked the Youngbloods. They're "Get Together"; "The Wine Song"; and "It's a Lovely Day" are great tunes, found on other albums. But I was lucky enough to catch them live at U.C. Davis, and actually sit on-stage behind the drummer. I was so close I could see the tracks on their arms. But they played a mostly "Elephant Mountain" set. Donovan once predicted, "Electrical banana, bound to be the very next craze...", but it never happened. It should have. This album was one of the best. I like to listen to it before I fall asleep. I liked it back in the day, and I like it today, decades later. It's eclectic music: jazz, rock, and whimsical musings thrown together in a tight, light weave. Buy it!
One of my Top 10 from the 60's.......2006-03-09
When a friend told me to buy this album back in college, I thought he was nuts. Yeah, they did "Get Together", good song, but let's get serious here. He played "Darkness, Darkness" on his eight track in the car, and I was totally blown away. The incredible thing is that the album kept getting BETTER with each cut!!!!! By the time "Ride the Wind" ended I realized I had heard one of the best albums in my relatively young life. Fast forward over 30 years, a marriage, two kids, a divorce later..... I kept telling my sons, both amatuer musicians, about this album "Elephant Mountain", but I couldn't remember the name of group!!! It was driving me nuts!!! Ah, senility is creeping in. And then one day I heard "Get Together" on a TV commercial and it all fell into place again "The Youngbloods!". I am listening to the album right now, and it's as great as I remember it. I'm still getting goosebumps. This is a must for any music lover, period. I agree with the reviewer who said that this album was ahead of its time.... Simply brilliant musical arrangements, excellent lyrics, hypnotic vocals.... Incredibly, I cannot find a single music site where I can download the album in it's entirety, but I caught some cuts in Itunes and it's in my Ipod now.... extasy!!
Elephant Mountain.......2002-02-13
If you don't have this album buy it immediately! It has got to be the most eclectic album of it's day. It was defintely ahead of it's time. It has some jazz, blues, country, rock, and celtic influences, not to mention Jesse's exquisite voice. Music of the 60's at it's best but not outdated. Thoroughly enjoyable with today's standards. Get one for your best friend..no one should miss out on this outstanding music!
Elephant Mountain.......2001-12-05
Probably one of the best rock albums of the 60s. Provides great listening music for any activity. While many remember the Youngbloods for "Get Together", Elephant mountain goes far beyond the comercial hit which receives so much air time. Those of us that remember the real sixties can relate to listening to songs like "quick sand" and "ride the wind" and the memories produced by this album. I can remember passing this record back and forth amoung friends, all who treasured it. If you like Jessie Collin Young and the Young Bloods, you will find this to be their best work.
the most underrated US rock album, ever.......2001-11-30
I have never understood the neglect that greeted this late Sixties masterpiece, one of my very favorites since it first came out. Maybe they had trouble duplicating the sound in concert (with the loss of Jerry Corbitt they were down to a trio, and some of the tracks here include a very rocking full orchestra.) Maybe the sound that the band and producer Charles E. Daniels (yes, ole Charlie Daniels!) laid down was just too complex for the average listener. There's rock, jazz, blues, bossa nova, C&W...sometimes all in the same long cut! Just give it a try. Years ago, I played it while a musician friend was present and he stood there with his jaw dropped until he exclaimed, "Who IS that!?" It's the Youngbloods. Check it out.
