4 out of 5 stars At long last..........2007-03-08

Have spent a few years trying to get hold of a copy of the six-minute extended mix of Doot Doot, a classic that I had only on tape off the radio, and finally found one. To any other searchers, be careful. There are various versions of the re-release of this 1983 album, and many of them have only the quite inferior four-minute version. This one has both. The other tracks are basically not much more than okay to good, hence the 4-stars, but latching onto that six minutes of Freur triumph at last makes this a biggie acquisition. Hurrah, I say. And hurrah, I say again!

5 out of 5 stars Old memories brought back.......2006-11-11

I bought the tape of this back in the eighties, & wore it thin, I just loved it! Although it may sound weak compared to some of the stuff today it still has a place amoungst todays music...I love it, with the extra tracks the CD offered I just couldn't lose!

5 out of 5 stars Karl Hyde and crew have always known where they are.......2003-09-20

No matter the ridiculousness of the music (be it pop, rock, techno, dub, house, industrial, new wave, psychedelic -no particular order), This band from Screen Gemz, Freur, and both the pop and techno versions of Underworld, created some of the coolest and refreshing music that stands the test of time. Albeit recent fans out there now only have ever heard the newer Underworld (1992 - 2003), it's nice that us old school hardcore fans are still here, nods Bill Skulley. Those old tapes and vinyls are worn out!!!

The re-release of Freur's Doot Doot was a wonderful surprise as most of their stuff is super rare. It's a truly extraordinary cd for it's time and reminds me of how much I truly adored Duran Duran's Rio when I first listened to it. Karl Hyde just has a rapturous voice to listen to, not unlike Simon LeBon.

When the Dubnobasswithmyheadman cd came out in '94 I was totally thrilled they didn't give up, and honestly I was ecstatic with the album...a most brilliant album...one that will never leave this boy's cd player.

I RECOMMEND ANYTHING BY KARL HYDE AND CO.

5 out of 5 stars clasic album that every modern colection should have.......2002-01-06

    Product Description

So you heard about Bing Ji Ling's smirking soul cover of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" on Ubiquity's Rewind Vol. 3? Here's the scoop: Bing Ji Ling is a guy's name. Bing Ji Ling also translates to "ice cream" in Mandarin. Bing Ji, the man, wants you to believe ice cream is an aphrodisiac. Bing Ji, the band, appears in concert with the dudes from No Doubt-- drummer Adrian Young and guitarist Tom Dumont-- dressed in 1950s Good Humor Man outfits. Bing Ji Ling also employs former pro skater Tommy Guerrero on bass, but on his debut album, Doodle Loot Doodle a Doo, he plays just about every instrument by himself; crisp, Cool Whip production is provided by the very interrogative Merkley???. Bing Ji Ling is actually S.F. white boy/soul man/sundae fanatic Quinn Luke, and Bing is funkier than Fudgie the Whale with a blunt in his blowhole. If Sly was a one-man family or if Beck and Prince took a double dip, it would taste something like this.

WOW! This is fantastic! How did I miss this great band for so long? Part Primitive Radio Gods and part Yes. I love this stuff!

I only ever knew Freur for Hey Ho, which I heard in 1991, before the internet, and then only on alternative radio stations. One the internet took off, I really should have looked them up. I didn't even notice Doot in Vanilla Sky. Where was my head? I usually look for the music in the credits. Now I'm looking for all their music.

I especially like Doot Doot, My Room, All Too Much, and the Devil and Darkness.

If you like Simple Minds, the Cure, Yes, PRG, Kansas, ... You'll love this.

4 out of 5 stars and then we go doot..........2007-03-19

Freur, who didn't have a name, came around in the 80s and their song received airplay in the UK. I knew this song at the time, the Doot Doot Song it was called because nobody knew what to call it, but it was well-liked, at least by me and my crowd, despite the lack of lyrics, which actually made the song better - much like Transatlanticism by Deathcab for Cutie - which has few lyrics except "I need you so much closer" - the Doot Doot Song reminds me of that in some ways.

It is, for those of you who were not alive in the 80s, or don't remember the song, the song you hear as Tom Cruise rides up in the lift in Vanilla Sky with his 'technial support' from his life support services as he rides to the roof-top (an excellent choice of a song, i think, for the moment, for what it's worth.) It's the scene where Tom must make his final choice; will he face that Vanilla sky and jump or continue his journey with extended life? I won't be a spoiler if you haven't seen the film... but that song that you will hear if you do see it is the Doot Doot song by Freur (who didn't even have a name when they first started out, btw).

Somehow, their music managed to cross the Atlantic from the UK, despite sales that were not so great but mid-chart ratings which weren't so bad. I am trying to compare to the Doot Doot song to something and all i can think of is Transatlanticism in terms of that it is all music and synth and virtually no lyrics, and more, that it is a freakin' great song to drive to and to me, that counts for everything since i like to drive my lil' Mini Coop like a speedster or Penelope Pitstop ...

I don't care what anyone says - take a listen. Hey, it made my music column on the List of the Moment on Blogcritics, and that's not easy; Volume Number 21.

    Cheers,

    s.r.p.

5 out of 5 stars sergeant peppers of synth pop.......2007-02-24

This album was my all time favorite for....well, its still one of my all time favorite. There was so much mystery to what this band was and how they got so much detail in their sound. I always said that this was the 'sergeant peppers of synth pop'. Why had no one heard of them back then? Because it was so good. That was the decade of 'no taste' you know. There are layers and layers of incredibly tastefull musical arrangements and production. I listened to this album over and over for years and always heard a new little detail in the songs. Absolutely uncomparable to any underworld or anything ever! Nobody has put so much soul into pop/synth wierdness since. When the cd came out they added that horrible sea shanty diddy...that has to go.

1 out of 5 stars Doot, Doot - Boot, Boot.......2005-11-25

What if they made an album and nobody came? This is that album

    4 out of 5 stars Doot-Doot is Good Good.......2004-08-22

I am going to use this review to concentrate on the single "Doot-Doot". Plenty of early techno like beats and nonsense lyrics is whats make Doot-Doot, yet that is not to say these synth beats are bad, it's a great example of early New Wave. To be honest i would like the song if the lyrics were just "and now we go, doot-doot" with the doot-doot in the background. Near the end some synth riffs come in, and with the 'doot-doot' in the background it sounds quite nice. The rest of the album isnt bad either.
