Chunga's Revenge [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
It's 1970, and look what FZ's up to: The band now includes jazz players like George Duke (keyboards) Anysley Dunbar (drums) and Ian Underwood (guitar and keyboards) plus a mysterious pair of singers called The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie -- who, it would turn out, were singers Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan, who'd recently jumped ship from LA pop group the Turtles (they weren't contractually allowed to use their real names at the time).

Opening with the proto-metal instrumental "Transylvania Boogie," CHUNGA'S REVENGE includes tracks like "Road Ladies" and "Rudy Wants to Buy Yez a Drink," the first of many looks FZ would take at the sleazier side of life on the road (which continued in the notorious film, 200 Motels, and on the album, Fillmore East, among others). This is a funny and rockin' set with a number of catchy tunes ("Would You Go All The Way?" and "Tell Me You Love Me") thrown in.

4 out of 5 stars Two essential, career-best FZ tracks on this one.......2007-03-23

Regardless of what you might think of the whole Flo & Eddie "experience" in Frank's timeline, this CD has two tracks which get right down into the heart of his best music. The title track is sort of "Theme From Burnt Weeny Sandwich Revisited"...a tense, slithering, honking beast that explodes on a few occasions and is one of the best Zappa guitar workouts of all time. Second is "Sharleena," in which Kaylan & Volman set aside the junior high scatology and dive waist-deep into a furious tribute to Zappa's beloved pachuco-flavored doo-wop. "I called up all my baby's friends and asked 'em, where she done went..." This song also appears on "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 3" in a 9-minute concert appearance from 1984 featuring Dweezil Zappa on lead guitar. All of the original's irony is stripped away (vocalists Ike Willis, Ray White and Bobby Martin do a nice job on the harmonies but approach the song with giggles a-plenty), and the point seems to be Dweezil attempting to prove that he can "shred" like Steve Vai (he can't). Zappa shared one thing in common with Bob Dylan...in his never-ending quest to continually "reinvent" his classic songs, sometimes the primary result was driving the listener back to the far superior original.

4 out of 5 stars "The Mothers: The Next Generation".......2007-02-28

This was a period of intense activity for Frank Zappa. He had broken up the original band, The Mothers Of Invention, right after the Spring tour of 1969, on VERY short notice, and seemed to want to distance himself from that whole thing. He put together a new band after experimenting with new musicians, mostly from the "Hot Rats" sessions, as well as producing Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" LP, but still cashing in on the old group's efforts, releasing "Burnt Weenie Sandwich" and "Weasels Ripped My flesh" by the old band, as well. All this, while doing production on the "Uncle Meat" project with material recorded by the old group and some newer material for it, and where did he find time to sleep?

His obvious favorite musician from the old days was Ian Underwood, and technically, he played more music on "Hot Rats" than Zappa did. So, FZ keeps Underwood, hires Jeff Simmons, George Duke, and Aynsley Dunbar for a tour, and calls the new band "The Mothers." A little back pedaling? Maybe. The new band does a show with Zubin Mehta's orchestra, Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan are in the audience, Kaylan's cousin is Zappa's tour manager, and they are invited to join the band, do another tour, cut some records, and make a movie.

Most of the material from "Chunga's Revenge is from the period where Flo & Eddie (Volman & Kaylan) first joined the band, and it is fleshed out with leftover material from "Hot Rats." The sound is a little raw, but one instantly hears what Zappa was after. A streamlined rock combo, with a bit of a pop feel. The songs are, for the most part, about life on the road, and the idea of groupie-related lyrics and concepts weren't yet driven to the extreme they were driven to later. This excess, I guess one can call it, is tempered with some fine instrumental work, the delicate "Twenty Small Cigars," the dark and brooding title track, the silly "The Clap," which is just filler, but it does help in segueing the material before and after it, and the opening "Transylvania Boogie," as well as the extended jam, "Nancy & Mary Music." People don't seem to like this, but it is a good jazz-rock jam from one of the concerts of that era.

He began the new decade on an optimistic note, Volman and Kaylan being as funny as any comedian you'll find anywhere, and a new band. A lot of people malign this period in Zappa's career, with all the juvenile locker-room humor, and the fascination with bizarre sex practices of people in the band, but even that can get a little tedious, some very good music was recorded here.

Zappa in transition.

5 out of 5 stars Chungas Revenge.......2006-06-17

Frank Zappa-Chungas Revenge *****

Apart from having a very strange title, which is not very strange for Frank Zappa, but apart from that Chungas Revenge is one of Frank Zappas best straight up rock and roll albums, and really one of my personal favorites of his of all time. Franks guitar playing on this album is among the best of his carear. Very bluesy and very emotion filled. It is almost as if he just improvised instead of writing every note out, I say almost because he would have never done that. The backing band of George Duke, Anysley Dunbar, Ian Underwood, and Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan of The Turtles is fantastic and one of his coolest lineups, really one of my favorites.

Songs like the title track 'Chungas Revenge' 'Tell Me You Love Me' 'Transylvania Boogie' and the excelent bluesy 'Road Ladies' are the real highlights of the album featuring some truly amazing guitar playing. 'Transylvania Boogie' contains a phonomonal guitar solo that is among Zappas best and most powerful. 'Road Ladies' is very bluesy and passionate in the music. The guitar work alone on this song is worth the money of the album. The rest of the songs on the album are good too but this are the real standouts, the true gems, the diamonds in the rough.

The rest of the albums songs are great as well. 'Twenty Small Cigars' 'Would You Go All The Way?' and the albums closer 'Sharlena' are all great songs. The album would be flata with out them. The only song on the album that I am not to found of is 'The Clap.' Im not sure why but I have never been able to get into this track or to enjoy it. But other then that there isnt a bad song on the album. All of the songs have great musicianship and are just all around good songs that anyone would like given the oppertunity.

Chungas Revenge is one of the best albums Frank Zappa albums ever recorded. So for that I recomend it to all who are interested. But Because it is in my opinion Franks most real rock album I recomend this to all rock fans because I know any rock fan would love this. Once you can get past a few goofy lyrics here and there this is a true genius people and one that needs to be appreciated. So do the legend and yourself a favor and give this album a chance.

4 out of 5 stars Not Classic Zappa but Still Has Good Moments.......2004-10-01

With Flo and Eddie onboard, Zappa took a turn more towards raunchy comedy but despite that, this disc still has lots of cool stuff on it, like the quirky instrumental "20 Small Cigars" and the fiercely delivered and much-deserved slap at musicians unions, "Rudy Wants to Buy Yez A Drink". Not essential but still worth pulling out from time-to-time.
