3 out of 5 stars more of a sampler than a 'best of".......2007-07-07

I was torn in writing my review of this CD, but came to the conclusion that the problem with this CD is that it is mistitled. This could aptly be titled "An introduction to", "the Idiots Guide to" or a "A Dylan Sampler", and I would have rated it higher. But as many reviewers have pointed out, this is a very limited CD, and I think it is more designed to give an intro and stimulate sales of other Dylan CDs. So we can probably thank the marketing folks for the title.

I DO own this CD (my wife bought it for me) and I am a longtime Dylan fan. My first album of his was 'Highway 61', which I consider his second best after 'Blood on the Tracks'.

So bottom line, if you are new to Dylan or want a quick refresher this is really quite good. If you really want a Best Of, get the Essential set. My copy of this CD is going in the car, for when I want a little Dylan on the road. I think it's well suited to that.

5 out of 5 stars "The Best Of Bob Dylan" Made Me a Bob Dylan Fan........2007-01-05

I had never really paid much attention to Bob Dylan prior to listening to this CD 2 years ago. He has since become a favorite of mine and I have since acquired 25 Bob Dylan CDs including many of his compilations.

As a now avid fan of Bob Dylan, I can understand the feeling that many of the core fans have expressed and the low ratings they attributed this CD, however I also remember the feeling that I had when I walked into Tower Records and upon seeing "The Best Of Bob Dylan" on sale, and feeling the price was right I made the purchase with the thought that 'this CD could offer me some exposure to Dylan'.

I played this CD every day for weeks, until I started researching his music in order to decide just what CDs to order, and now, I have quite a Bob Dylan collection.

But let me also say this: though the "Essential" double CD is a much better deal, if at the time I had a choice between "The Best Of Bob Dylan" and "Essential", I would still have chosen "The Best Of Bob Dylan", as it represented a sampler of his best songs which at the time was all I was interested in. For me this CD was perfect. I never would have purchased a double CD "sight unseen" no matter what the sale price.

4 out of 5 stars To the head-scratchers... and the uninitiated:.......2006-12-03

I wonder how many of you who are writing negative reviews actually own this CD, or at least bothered to thumb through the booklet of someone else's copy. If you did, you would immediately have seen something that makes writing a review with all your similar criticisms rather moot: "Let's call a spade a spade - you can't assemble a best-of that's better than "Highway 61 Revisited" or "Freewheelin'" or "Blood on the Tracks." Those albums are invulnerable. What you can do is offer a sampler to new listeners. That's what this is - a starting point. You can follow whichever song here strikes your fancy back to the album it came from and find a dozen more just as good. Consider this a compass and a map." - Bill Flanagan, from the liner notes of "The Best of Bob Dylan."

Trying to fit the best of an artist like Bob Dylan on one disc is impossible, but record companies seem to have gotten together as of late and decided that every artist - even those who already have several greatest hits sets, double and triple disc hits collections, and boxed sets, all also need a single disc hits set comprised of only the biggest, most well known singles. This, of course, is a way of making money, but it is also presumably (hopefully) made for those who only want the ultimate hits or are looking for a starting point and don't want to risk spending x-amount more dollars on a bigger collection they are not sure about. Of course I would tell someone to go with "The Essential..." if they really just wanted a hits only collection, but I must confess, I am not a huge Dylan fan (I know, I know), but I am a big music fan so I naturally am familiar with most of Dylan's albums and songs. I have picked up his best regarded albums over the years and bought "Essential." But for me a little Dylan goes a long way (before you say this is sacrilege, just think if there isn't some universally praised legend that you just never could get into), so I guess I am exactly the type of person for who this type of compilation is intended.

I recently wrote a negative review of Aerosmith's new single disc hits saying it simply is pointless in lieu of other, better, more complete attempts. I told potential buyers to opt for their recent two disc hits instead. Ditto single disc hit releases for Springsteen and Tom Petty. Many of you are doing the same here regarding this album, and I would agree with that. However, some single disc hits, while certainly not complete and definitely not BETTER than other multi-disc compilations, get the job done of culling all the TECHNICAL CHART HITS (Prince and Steely Dan each have one that comes to mind). Remember that opening quote. This is a compass and a map; a sampler for new listeners to seek out more Dylan if they are so inclined. In that respect, this is a valuable item. Not to mention it is useful for those who aren't big Dylan fans but do like his most famous works.

I picked this and "Modern Times" up for $10 each on sale at Best Buy.

Twenty bucks well spent.

4 out of 5 stars Better than some Dylan die-hards want you to believe.......2006-05-05

There are about 45 proper Bob Dylan studio albums and about as many compilation albums of one kind or another. While it's been 5 years since Bob's last studio album (2001's "Love and Theft"), there have been a slew of compilations released since 2000, including the 2CD The Essential (in 2000), Bootleg Series Vol. 5 (2002), Greatest Hits Vol. 1-3 (2003), Bootleg Series Vol. 6 (2004), Chronicles Vol. 1 (2004) and Bootleg Series Vol. 7 (2005), the latter being the soundtrack to the riveting Martin Scorsese documentary "No Direction Home".

On the heels of the critical success of "No Direction Home", yet another compilation was released in November, 2005: "The Best of Bob Dylan" (16 tracks; 78 min.). The main selling point is that this CD delivers the most simplistic (some might say, superficial) overview of Dylan's 40 year recording career on a single CD. Thankfully the tracks are sequenced chronologically, starting with "Blowing in the Wind" and finishing with "Summer Days". As always, you can argue till the cows come home why certain tracks are or are not on here, the fact is that there is as much music on here as a single CD will allow. This compilation is not marketed to the die-hard Dyaln fan, but instead to the very casual Dylan fan who liked the buzz from "No Direction Home" but for whom the 2CD "The Essential" overview is still too much. Bottom line: this is the best single-CD overview of Bob Dylan's long and storied career.

Please note: there is a confusingly identical titled single-CD compilation available that was issued in Europe in the late 1990s (and widely available in the US, including here on Amazon), which then was followed by "The Best of Volume 2" a few years later. The 2005 US release of "The Best of" has no connection with it, and its tracklist is fundamentally different. Last but not leat, the word is that Dylan has a new studio album in the can, with an expected release of Fall, 2006. Now this is something Dylan die-hards can all rejoice over!

5 out of 5 stars Far From Perfect But Great For Beginners.......2006-03-24

It's pretty well known in my inner circle that I love classic rock and roll in all its incarnations. So most people were shocked that up until just week I did not have any Bob Dylan in my collection. The cd I picked up was the 16 track, single disc "The Best Of Bob Dylan".

Now, it's pretty much a given that Bob Dylan is one of those artists who, in order to get the full sprectum of his best work, you'll have to buy all of his albums. However, there are some who only want just one Dylan cd in their collection. How does "The Best Of Bob Dylan" fit that criteria? Read on for the positives and the negatives.

POSITIVES:
-If you're just getting into Dylan, this isn't a bad starting point at all. You get most of the essentials, including "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are A - Changin'", "Like A Rolling Stone", "Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35", "Lay Lady Lay", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and my personal favorite "Hurricane".
-The sound quality is awesome.
-Affordable and easy to find.

NEGATIVES:
- A great deal of classics are missing, even if pretty much everything on here deserves its spot.

Other than that negative, this is a great collection for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Volume 2 complements Volume 1 perfectly.......2005-02-14

Around the same time that Columbia released "The Essential Bob Dylan" in the US, it also released "The Best of Bob Dylan Volume 2" in most overseas markets, a sequel to Volume 1 which was released in 1997.

"The Best of Bob Dylan Volume 2" (17 tracks, 77 min., plus bonus disk) starts off with the 'excuse' that was needed for the release, namely the excellent (and Oscar-winning) "Things Have Changed" from the "Wonder Boys" soundtrack. After that, the remaining 16 tracks provide a chronological overview of Dylan's best known songs not found on Volume 1, and thus form a perfect complement to Volume 1. The highlights are many, including "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", "I Want You", "Simple Twist of Faith", "Changing of the Guards" (all of which are missing from "The Essential Bob Dylan"), "Hurricane", "Rainy Day Woman", and so on. The audio quality is superb. So you ask, what more can one expect of a "greatest hits" album? A bonus disk, of course!

The bonus disk (18 min.) provides live tracks of the epic "Highlands" (from "Time Out of Mind"), followed by "Blowing in the Wind". They show Dylan in his element, and I wish there were more official releases of the "Never-Ending Tour".

In all, this is an excellent compilation. Highly recomended!

4 out of 5 stars Best of Vol. 2, Six Reviews in One.......2003-10-01

Throughout the years the suits at Columbia, then Sony have tried to make more money of Mr. D by mixing and matching his material, not just in a Greatest Hits compilation, but as a "Best of Import" from Japan, Holland, Sweden, or some other far away place. They tout them as better, different, remastered, a gold version and lots of times they'll build these compilations around a song that hadn't appeared on any other album.

The current favorite is the wonderful song, "Things have changed," which shows up on five different sets available today.

"The Best of series Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" Imports are the only one of the 5 sets that you can get separately and, since they couldn't put "Things Have Changed on both CDs, they put "Shelter From The Storm," from the Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding move "Jerry Maguire" on the first disc. If you were to buy both discs in this set you'd be out over fifty bucks. Of course, there isn't a bad song on the discs, but if you're like me, you already own most of them.

"The Very Best of Vol. 1 & 2" Swedish version has 33 songs on it, all available elsewhere except, of course "Things Have Changed." The songs are about the same as on the other compilations and this one will set you back thirty-three dollars.

"The Ultimate Collection," is of course not the ultimate collection, but it is a collection of 33 songs, very similar in scope to the songs in the other collection and built around, "Things Have Changed." This version will shrink you wallet by thirty-nine dollars.

"The Essential Bob Dylan" double CD set has 30 songs on it and has a nice flow to it. Like the other compilations mentioned here it features "Things Have Changed." You'll have to fork over twenty-one dollars to get this one. It's the most reasonably priced of the bunch, and so it's the only one I'm giving five stars to.

"The Essential Bob Dylan" Import has six more songs on it and it'll cost you 16 more dollars. That's a lot of money to pay to get those extra six songs.

Okay after rounding them up and telling you a little about them, I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed in Sony about this group. Unlike "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2" which like these isn't really a Greatest Hits compilation, these CDs cost a whole gang of money and give us only one new song. "GH 2" gave us a half dozen new tunes, so we (not me, cuz I wasn't born yet) didn't feel ripped off when we bought it. Also, the "Biograph" compilation was stuffed with new songs. Ah well, my recommendation would be to buy the American version of "The Essential Bob Dylan" for twenty-one dollars and shine the rest of them on. Five stars for that one, four for the rest.

5 out of 5 stars What is a true fan?.......2002-10-04

This album cuts right to the heart of the thorny question: "Can you be a true fan of an artist if you are primarily a fan of their greatest hits compilations?" Much as it hurts me to say this, my gut has always told me the answer is "no". Why does it hurt so much to arrive at this answer? First, I absolutely adore Creedence Clearwater Revival's Chronicle Volume I - it has to be one of my top 10 all-time favorite albums. But since I don't love any of CCR's "real" albums, I'm not a true fan of CCR according to my rigid standards for true fandom. It pisses me off to have to admit that. My second reason involves my girlfriend. She is hopelessly devoted to Bob Dylan's imported Best of 1 - I reckon it is her favorite album. And yet, she rarely listens to his other material. I mean, she has several of Dylan's albums, but it is Best of 1 that she returns to time and again. So, according to my standards, she's not a true Dylan fan. Don't get me wrong, she's more than just a casual fan. But a true fan? I fear not. In my opinion and (I suspect) those of several influences from my formative years (Chris S., David F., and Steve M.), a true fan appreciates most of, if not all of, an artist's works. So, I'll keep enjoying my Chronicle and N.G.A. will keep enjoying her Best of 1, but until we develop more complete appreciations of CCR and Dylan, respectively, we simply won't qualify as true fans.

What do I think of Best of 1? That's easy. There are a bunch of amazing songs here and it would be foolish to even consider giving this album less than 5 stars. There's not much I can say about the individual songs that hasn't already been said more eloquently by countless others over the past 30 years. On this one album, you will hear timeless folk music, classic rock, and the roots of "the (alt-country) movement". Heck, Dylan even had a punk attitude long before that genre was born. Simply put, if you don't have any of Dylan's other albums and have at least a passing interest in popular music, this album belongs in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Dylan: A True Musical genius.......2001-07-30

This treasure has all of Bob Dylan's greatest- Like A Rolling Stone, Don't Think Twice It's Allright, Times They Are A Changin, Mr Tambourine Man, Forever Young, Just Like a Woman, Blowin in the Wind, and the list goes on & on. Would've been complete if it had Tangled Up in Blue. Bob Dylan has an EXCELLENT live show- I saw him at the First Union Spectrum in Philadelphia PA on November 17th 2001- he has a great band- See him if you ever get the chance!
Dylan has had such an influence on many other folk-rock artists out today:
Counting Crows: "I wanna be like Bob Dylan"(Mr Jones)
Hootie & The Blowfish: "Ain't Bobby so cool? I only wanna be with you. Yea I'm tangled up in blue, I only wanna be with you."(Only Wanna Be With You)

LONG LIVE BOB DYLAN!

Words&Music really capture The Dylan Effect here.He is Witout a Doubt one of The Greatest Minds that the Music World has ever Known or Heard.Blowing in the wind&the times are a changing are classics.Dylan is a True Poet.

4 out of 5 stars Agood mix of the best.......1999-02-01

I will make this short. This is a great album with only a little sag in the middle. But how could it not be, after all, starting off with Blowin in the wind and Mr. Tambourine man.Overall the sound is reflective and powerfull, even at times slightly bitter. All this combines to give that Dylan sound, the real sound which defines his music. A very enjoyable album which I recommend to anyone who likes Bob.

5 out of 5 stars This Dylan should not frighten little children.......2007-05-14

According to an article in the New York Post, Bob Dylan has been frightening the little children in his grandson's kindergarten class. Any parent intent upon rearing children with the proper amount of "cultural literacy" should begin by exposing them while still in the womb. This collection is thoughtfully assembled and does contain some of Dylan's most ground breaking music. It is a delight to hear, the bonus tracks are interesting, and one could safely train a child's ear to the joy that is Dylan at his best.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Volume 1 of Dylan's Best.......2005-02-14

There have been many Bob Dylan greatest hits compilations over the years, and no major excuse is needed for yet another one. The excuse for this particular compilation, originally released in 1997, was the prominent use of several Dylan songs in the movie "Jerry Maguire", including "Shelter from the Storm" in a (slightly) different version from the one on "Blood on the Tracks".

"The Best of Bob Dylan" (18 tracks, 76 min.) provides a chronological overview of his biggest hits and best known songs, including "Blowin' in the Wind", "Like a Rolling Stone", "Lay Lady Lay", "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", Tangled Up in Blue", and the latter day tracks "Jokerman" and "Everything is Broken". The afore-mentioned "Shelter from the Storm" closes the album. Three years later, this set would be followed by the equally excellent "Best of, Volume 2". The remastered sound is fabulous. Regretfully there are no detailed liner notes. Taken together, Volume 1 and Volume 2 of "The Best of Bob Dylan" provide a truly "Essential Bob Dylan" overview.

5 out of 5 stars The Best - like it says..........2004-06-21

The customer couldn't have been more right - this definitely IS the best place for new fans to start listening to Bob Dylan. With all the widely known hits like "Blowin' in the Wind", "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" to less known songs such as "Lay Lady Lay" and "Tangled Up in Blue", 'The Best of Bob Dylan' is definitely a collection of his best!
The quality of the tracks is excellent; great remasters!
I recommend this to everybody looking for some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Nice compilation--Too bad other items were not included.......2007-05-28

This is a very well done "greatest hits" selection. If you want Dylan's best work from the origins to 2000, this fills the bill nicely. On the other hand, there are no interesting if offbeat choices; there aren't some of those intriguing live cuts (which can sometimes be interesting). This is about as safe a set of songs as one could imagine (and that is somewhat disappointing). Nonetheless, that said, what a set of hits is represented here!

From the early years, we have classics such as "Blowin' in the Wind," "The Times They Are a Changin'", and "It Ain't Me Babe." Might have been nice to have had something from his interesting introductory album.

The transitional years--as he changed his style and musicianship. "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and "Mr. Tambourine Man." Then, the early classic electric Dylan: "Like a Rolling Stone," "Rainy Day Women # 12 and 35."

Softer sounds from after "Blonde on Blonde"--"I'll Be Your Baby Tonight," "Lay Lady Lay," and "If not for You." On to "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," "Forever Young," "Tangled up in Blue," and "Hurricane."

Then, the religious works, such as "Gotta Serve Somebody." Then, on to "Jokerman," "Things Have Changed," and so on.

All in all, then, a nice compilation of hits. But it would have been nice if a bit more imagination had been used in selecting cuts, to include some interesting items beyond the most obvious tunes. . . .

I bought this for my husband who loves it. He has a lot of Dylan CDs but this one has all of the classic Dylan songs that made the singer great.

4 out of 5 stars Very Best of Bob Dylan, Six Reviews in One.......2003-10-01

This is an excellent buy for new Dylan fans or people like me who are trying to replace their old vinyl collections with CD's. It has all of the tunes from Greatest Hits #1 and the most popular songs from 2 and 3. Of course, you can always quibble about some of the selections, but overall the songs are well chosen. Another nice feature, at least to my way of thinking, is that the tracks are arranged chronologically.

5 out of 5 stars Very Best of Bob Dylan (Import).......2000-07-05

Another import that sets the standard for Dylan's incredible music legacy. A must for anyone who is serious about Dylan or cares about American music that will stand the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-03-22

When I first bought this CD I was not a huge Bob Dylan fan, in fact when ever someone put it on I would practically beg them to turn it off, but now that I've gotten used to his voice it is my favorite CD in my collection, now whenever I put it on people beg me to turn it off because they've heard me listening to it so many times.

5 out of 5 stars Best compilation yet.......2001-11-02

This is by far the very best Dylan album I have been able to lay my hands on, compilation or otherwise. As a double cd it has incredible depth and content, with all the obvious favourites, "Blowin' in the Wind", "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" etc, but also other tracks such as "Shelter from the Storm" and "I'll be your Baby Tonight". It's a great mix from all his albums, 150 minutes of pure Dylan brilliance. It also has his new song, "Things Have Changed", which would no doubt be worth buying the album for regardless.

Don't let this album slip through your fingers; by far the most listenable Dylan album I've come across yet.

All 10 tracks for the US "Greatest Hits" CD are included, as well as standouts such as "Don't Think Twice", "Highway 61", "All Along The Watchtower", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", "Forever Young", "Tangled Up In Blue", "Hurricane", "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Dignity", and "Things Have Changed".

If you ask me, the Canadian "Best Of Bob Dylan" volumes 1 and 2 are a much better set than the old "Greatest Hits". Plus, you get a lot more songs on one album than you did on the previous releases. So, how do the songs stack up? Not bad at all. There were some rather conspicuous gaps in the volume I that are filled with this release, like Rainy Day Women and Subterranean Homesick Blues and a new song that's just as good as the old stuff. Definitely worth the money.
