About the Artist
Hailing from New Orleans and now Los Angeles based AM brings a new twist to the pop music arena. Following in the footsteps of other less obvious pop icons (Beck, Wilco, The Flaming Lips) AM delivers delivers multiple variations of the pop medium with the richness of southern sounds.

Product Description
"...AM takes equal parts of classic Americana, folk-rock and pop, and melts them down into something entirely his own, and he does it with two things money can't buy: imagination and taste. These sturdily built pop songs are graced with ingeniously colorful arrangements and have that 'instant classic' thing stamped all over them..." LA Weekly

If you didn't get to know Chrisette Michele by way of Jay-Z (she was the one singing sparkling hooks on "Lost Ones") or Nas (she channeled Billie Holiday on "Can't Forget About You"), stop wasting valuable seconds. Though the hype on this pure-voiced, raunch-resistant songstress has her resuscitating a classic jazz sound that rarely infiltrates R&B--comparisons to Lady Day, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald are mounting--she's more her generation's answer to Erykah Badu: any notes she wraps her lips around come out fresh-sounding, and she adds to the effect with a built-in elegance that's irresistible to R&B and non-R&B fans alike. Hip-hoppers get a custom dose of Michele's magic on "Be O.K.," featuring the flabbergastingly prolific yet still likable Will.i.am, jazz sentimentalists will instantly succumb to "Like a Dream," and anybody with ears on his or her head will warm to the slinky slow jam that is "If I Have My Way." Michele's is a rare talent; count on this outstanding debut propelling her to stratospheric heights. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

I Am, her soulful debut album, is an artistic exploration that fuses 24-year old Chrisette Michele's diverse musical interests into a wonderland. "I realize that I'm new to the music world, but I've been preparing for this moment for long time," says the Long Island native. Even before signing a recording contract, Michele had performed on concert bills with more established artists like Kem, India.Arie, Angie Stone, and Lionel Richie. "India saw me singing at the Village Underground in New York City. She came backstage that first night and graciously offered me a gig as her opening act," says Michele. Working hard in the studio writing songs and recording demos, Michele finished an album's worth of material before even trying to get signed. "I've been creating songs since I was 12, so I knew I needed the right musical blend in order to stand out from the many other performers trying to get a deal." Though already a fan of gospel and classical, it wasn't until Michele was 17 that she also developed a passion for jazz. "When I was still in high school a teacher introduced me to jazz singer Astrud Gilberto, and afterwards my life was all about jazz," she remembers. With the release of I Am, Chrisette Michele will soon be sharing those musical dreams with the rest of the world.

5 out of 5 stars I AM IN LOVE WITH I AM!.......2007-07-26

I HAVE BEEN IN LOVE WITH CHRISETTE MICHELE'S VOIVE FROM THE TIME I HEARD IT ON "LOST ONES" BY JAY-Z. THIS CD IS CONSTANTLY IN MY HOME AND OUTSIDE OF IT BY NE. MY NINE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER IS ALSO SINGING ALONG NOW! I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD TO ANY AND EVERYONE!

5 out of 5 stars excellent cd.......2007-07-26

This was a great 1st cd by her. I am looking forward to her next one.

5 out of 5 stars must buy.......2007-07-24

i read about chrisette michele and her cd in a magazine, heard it, and bought it the same day! she has an incredible voice-very soulful! great cd-you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, subtle, gracious and enduring........2007-07-23

Finally. A young female singer who isn't begging for a man, bragging on her sexuality and going on and on about the material things she has. There is a maturity in the lyrics and the phrasing of these songs that wows me. Each song actually tells a story or sets a mood. Not to knock other singers, but her positivity (in a time where many sisters aren't really selling a lot of positive) is refreshing. In particular, I would love to see the song "Good Girl" played to young women over and over again.

But it's the voice, the delivery, the complexity that sells this CD to me. Truth be told, this child could probably sing "Little Miss Muffett" and still make a classic. Her voice is at times silk, at others, velvet, and without all of that over singing and caterwauling that some folks seem to think makes them a strong singer.

I enjoy this Cd, it's on heavy rotation in my car and home.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Phenomenal!.......2007-07-21

I was so entranced by her voice. The girl has real talent. It is so refreshing to here new talent. She reminds me of an old soul because of the jazz influences. Some of my favorites are.."Like a Dream"..."Is this the way love feel".."In this for You".."Golden".

4 out of 5 stars Still as good as when they were young.......2007-07-07

I got to see them June 15th 2007 at the Saratoga Winery. They were a blast!!! You thought it was yesterday. They still got it, they still sound as good. They took "Momma Told Me Not To Come" and turned it into a Rap for fun, and the way they did it, you would have thought it had alwasy been sung that way.

I found myself remembering the words to most of the songs, that I thought I had forgotten. You don't forget, the words are just tucked away. They had a couple of new band members but the rest were the good ol' guys we remember. If you don't get to see them, this CD will be the next best thing. You will really enjoy listening to the songs on this CD.

After buying this, go check out "ToTo". They were the opening Band for Three Dog Night!!!

5 out of 5 stars America- the hits.......2007-07-18

Great album of all their hits. Even the songs I didn't know are very listenable. Excellent sound and timeless music. Thank you America.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-07-13

I bought two (one for my sister). Every song on this CD brought back great memories of the 70's. It's a great CD for driving, cooling out at home, etc. America made such great songs. "Muskrat Love" was always my favorite.

4 out of 5 stars Nice compilation of the real "great" AMERICA Hits.......2007-06-06

America and the 1970s, is an association you cannot avoid...
This excellent compilation made by the wizards of RHINO Records, includes almost all of their greatest hits. The sound quality is really good.
An ideal choice if you love to go listening good music while driving your car, guessing that anytime you should be driving all along the Ventura Highway, following the track of a Horse with No Name... Trying to reach your Sister Golden Hair, named Daisy Jane!... This CD will do Magic in your ears!

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of those old songs.......2007-05-14

Most of America's greatest hits like "Horse with no Name" came out before I was born or when I was very small. I have always loved many of their songs because they were played on the radio, but never really knew who sang them. When I bought this album I was pleasantly surprised that most of the great old songs that I loved were done by America! They bring back memories of being driven around in a 1970's LeMans by my mom while wearing bell bottoms and pigtails. "Sandman" is my favorite, it totally rocks. There are a few songs on here that I don't care for, probably done later in their career, but overall this album is enjoyable from start to end.

4 out of 5 stars All their hits in one place.......2007-04-12

This compilation has all of America's hits and is a wonderful listen. "Horse With No Name", "Sandman", "Ventura Highway", "Sister Golden Hair", "Tin Man", "Lonely People", "You Can Do Magic", "The Border". This is good soft rock from the seventies.

As a band the Grass Roots were always a shadowy bunch, a front for studio musicians and professional songwriters looking to get their songs on the radio. They scored 14 top 40 hits during their reign in the late '60s/early '70s and their hits were among the catchiest and most enjoyable of the AM radio era. "Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Bella Linda," "Two Divided by Love," and a slew of others are shameless pop made brilliant by multilayered harmonies and arrangements that liberally borrowed from folk-rock and R&B. The Grass Roots may have been product, but what great product. --Rob O'Connor

Album Description

This low-priced disc is far & away the best single-CD compilation ever issued of the Grass Roots' work, 16 chart singles covering every phase of their history, from 1966's 'Where Were You When I Needed You' (in its actual hit version) thru 'Let's Live for Today' & 'Midnight Confessions' to their last hit, 1972's 'The Runway.' Originally released in 1996. MCA.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-05-26

This will certainly take you back in time. The Grassroots had so many hits and they are all here and are the original versions that you heard on the radio! My personal favorite is "The River Is Wide", which gets very little airplay on oldies radio stations. If you are a Grassroots fan, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Grass Roots 2007.......2007-05-08

Just saw the Grass Roots(Grill and others) at the Sellersville Theater, in Sellersville, PA. He was using a cane but still sounded great. This takes me back to my childhood days and listening to the sound bites on this CD I am amazed how well he still sounds. I really recommend you buy this one. He also has a great stage presence and really interacted with the crowd. I would definitely recommend anyone who enjoyed this band in their youth to take time to see them. Yes, even after all these years! The crowd is small, personal and you won't regret it. He even cut a live CD in 2000 that he sells on tour.

5 out of 5 stars POP MUSIC DELUXE = GRASS ROOTS style !.......2007-04-26

Well, what a great CD. Listen, I remember sitting in the backseat of my parents car, I was about 10 or 11 yrs old, listening to KLIF AM radio, Dallas. Hearing The Grass Roots songs through those cheap GM Chevy speakers was almost as good as ice-cream. I had just started playing drums (thanks, Ringo), and the Grass Roots songs propelled me even more. (I am going somewhere with this). Later, in the 80's, I went to a Texas Rangers baseball game where Herman's Hermits, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, The Monkees and The Grass Roots were playing a special show after the game. Well, I will say this, they were all good, but the stand-out (BY FAR) was Rob Grill and whatever Grass Roots band was performing with him. He KILLED the crowd, and let me tell you, those songs sounded as good as they did when I was sitting in the backseat of the car many years before. Get this CD. As a drummer, I've always wondered if Hal Blaine was playing drums on this CD. Hmmmmm. Anyone know for sure? (Hal was a monster drummer in the 60's and played on everything for everyone).

You will listen to this CD for a very long time. POP PERFECTION that STILL sounds GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars An unknown tidbit about "The Grass Roots".......2007-03-28

before American Bandstand had a song "written" for them (by none other than Barry Manilow!) the theme song for American Bandstand was "Midnight Confessions" by The Grass Roots!

Now, I dare you say The Grass Roots weren't an important musical group! Before MTV, American Bandstand was the BOMB!

5 out of 5 stars A definite blast from the past.......2007-03-09

From Amazon.co.uk

Hot on the heels of their shock UK No. 1 single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not confirms Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys as the UK underground's most proselytizing young preachers of the DIY gospel. Marrying nervy, caffeine-and-cigarettes indie clatter to conversational, pretense-free lyrics and the occasional burst of off-the-cuff eloquence ("No time for Montagues or Capulets/Just banging tunes and DJ sets," proffers "Dancefloor"), it's an instant, pulse-racing hit.

No question, the Monkeys are more sinners than saints. The opening "The View from the Afternoon" predicts a ruckus with a whole lot more grit than the Kaisers can muster, while on the mellow "Riot Van," a tale of underage drinking and cop-baiting culminates in a messy beating in the back of a station wagon. Look beyond the Arctics' bristly, laddish exterior, however, because it's actually affairs of the heart that comprise this album's secret core: see the sweaty-palmed "Dancing Shoes," bearing testament to the trial of nerves that is pulling in a suburban indie nightclub, or "Mardy Bum"--a tribute to a moody girlfriend that, for all its witty barbs ("I've seen your frown and it's like looking down the barrel of a gun"), is tinted with sweet affection. --Louis Pattison

Album Description

Musically, there are bits of The Stone Roses, "What's The Story Morning Glory", and "Nevermind". As catchy as those reference points are, it's the songwriting that has won the band a fiercely dedicated following; a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and "Ghost Town" era Specials. Two #1 UK singles. Press already lined up with Rolling Stone, Spin, Entertainment Weekly, and Interview, to name a few. Three more US/Canadian tours planned for this year, including headlining Domino's label showcase at SXSW.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Perfectly decent........2007-07-17

Not a bad record, but nothing compared to slur-punk contemporaries, The Libertines. I find it funny how often people cite their lyrics as the selling point of the band, so "fresh", "witty" and "insightful." Frankly, I didn't hear anything the Velvet Underground hadn't already said. Let's hope Alex Turner takes up heroin; he might end up half the musician Pete Doherty is.

5 out of 5 stars A great fresh sound!.......2007-07-05

They are not that popular in the US yet, but are huge over in Europe. If you listen to 2 of their songs you will be hooked. Its a new kind of sound and a breath of fresh air from a lot of the crap music now-a-days. I would recommend this CD to anyone who like music!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-06-26

This is an excellent catchy CD that rock and rolls pretty well. My favorite tracks are "Red light indicates doors are secure" and "marty bum" Also check out "The Redwalls" first CD "Universal Blues" if you liked this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy.......2007-06-09

If you like big names from the UK, no one's bigger. It doesn't live up to the hype completely, but it's catchy and entertaining. I find myself singing along with it all the time.

For once, a band that got a lot of hype actually is worthy of the praise.

Forrest Gump (1994) is one of the most successful films ever made, winning Tom Hanks his second successive Best Actor Oscar (he won the previous year for Philadelphia) as well as claiming the Best Picture Oscar and many other awards and nominations, including several for music. A unique fable of American life from the 1950s to the 80s, the film blends comedy, drama, war, romance and groundbreaking special effects into a social and political portrait of the passing years, all seen through the eyes of the intellectually challenged but immensely likeable Forrest Gump. The soundtrack is a double album featuring 31 classic pop tunes plus a suite from Alan Silvestri's rich orchestral music, represented more completely on the companion score album. Opening with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog", this is a fine anthology of three decades of American music, taking in everything from Joan Baez's "Blowin' In The Wind" to Aretha Franklin's "Respect", The Mammas and The Papas' "California Dreamin'" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson". Here also is Scott McKenzie with "San Francisco", plus Jefferson Airplane, the Supremes, Lynyrd Skynrd and many more. Like American Graffiti (1973), this is one of the great pop soundtracks, happily at home in just about any music collection. --Gary S. Dalkin

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't look accurate.......2007-05-10

I don't own this soundtrack but I've seen the movie a ton of times. I don't see Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" on here. It was playing in the scene where Jenny almost committed suicide by standing on a ledge at some hotel. And "Stoned Love" wasn't even in the movie. Isn't this supposed to be a soundtrack for a movie, not the "best hits of...?"

4 out of 5 stars a great soundtrack!.......2007-03-29

i was so happy with this soundtrack - almost every song on here brings back memories of a great time. you can sing along with everything, and it has music for every mood.

5 out of 5 stars Deja vu all over again.......2007-02-20

A gem of an anthology, a definitive compilation of some of the seminal rock songs of the 60s and 70s. Each song is so evocative of the era. This 2-CD set is like a precious timecapsule. This is the CD I'd bring with me to a desert island.

The Weepies are a duo of songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. How can one not help but be delighted when two such similar sound names align with one another? Perfectly matched, the thirteen songs are quiet but insistent, with lyrics full of pop smarts and poetic depth. Narratives, whether fragmented or direct, empower most of the songs, giving even first-person vantage points a solid foundation. Talan does the bulk of the lead vocals, and her voice is a confident instrument, full of sly surprise and subtle phrasing. The pair's harmonies are thoughtful and evocative, oftentimes utilizing less than obvious intervals. In fact, the chorus vocals owe more to great radio pop of the sixties and seventies than to the various contemporary strains of folk and Americana. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars It lives in my cd player!.......2007-07-17

This cd was a surprise hit for me. I bought this cd because I loved their song featured on the One Tree Hill soundtrack, and now I am hooked. I bought this and four other cds at the same time and this is the one that stood out the most. If you're like me and looking to hear sounds other than the pop songs on the radio, this is the cd to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Like smooth dark chocolate!.......2007-06-28

I always wanted to use chocolate in a title. This album is exceptional. First one I own of theirs but am highly addicted! Just listen, I know you will be addicted too! Deb's voice is absolutely fantastic and the collarboration...cannot say enough!

5 out of 5 stars No amount of whiskey, no amount of wine..........2007-06-24

I found this cd at the library and checked it out because of the band's name- so melodramatic! I love this album, especially the song "Citywide Rodeo." Deb Talan's voice is haunting (for me anyway, but I like the weird chicks), and the duo's indie songwriting chops are superb. Very mellow music, like you might hear at some point in a Wes Anderson movie. Totally worth the $.
P.S. Deb, will you marry me? I don't make much money, but you can play your songs for me any time you want.

4 out of 5 stars Because I Say So.......2007-06-18

Better than Indie. Its a nice listen for a short road trip.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Late To The Party But..........2007-05-27

I can't believe it's taken so long for me to review such an unbelievably listenable album. Here's my problem with so many CDs: you buy them expecting a lot, listen a few times and put them away. I have a certain female singer/songwriter that I've been loyal to for many years even though her CD's (to me) have gotten worse and worse (some say she's being experimental but I say she's just trying too hard to be current and have some breakthrough success). The day I bought this woman's last CD is the same day I bought "Say I Am You." Suffice it to say, I listened to the first CD once and realized "never again" and then put in The Weepies. I was immediately relieved (although I knew I already loved them from their previous CD) that it's just as beautiful if not better than their first and I have no fear that they will decide to suddenly start channeling Justin Timberlake. These two artist do what they do and that is sing beautiful harmonies, write amazing touching lyrics and let the obviously love they have for each other shine through to touch everyone with their Happiness and talent. We are lucky to have them. Here's to their songs spinning madly on for many years to come!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars UGH!.......2007-05-10

I couldn't wait to buy this CD and boy do I regret it now. I was 7 when I first heard The Monkees and had a couple of their albums. Vinyl records are more memorable than this! In the Theme song it seemed muted. Last Train to Clarksville was what I remembered. I hated the few songs that Davey Jones sang on and Mike Nesmith is just too country. Spare your eardrums the monstrosity of Auntie Grizelda. Peter Tork sings flat and out of tune. I hate it now as much as I did when I was a kid. Some of the songs I never even heard of. There's also a Bonus Karaokee disk. Now I've Karaokee'd and I'm good, but this disk makes even me sound bad, and that takes some doing. All in all it's an UGH for me. After 2 plays I had to give it up. The Monkees, at least from my point of view, who was around when they first came out and used to sing with their albums should stay in the 60's where they belong. The Best of the Monkees? I have one word for that. NOT!

4 out of 5 stars All in all, a very good collection..........2007-04-10

I'm still more partial to the 1995 Greatest Hits collection (also on Rhino, released amidst their album-by-album reissue of their entire original catalog, crawling with bonus tracks on every disc)...this one stops at "Listen to the Band". The other collection has five fewer tracks but in my humble opinion provides a better overview including their two best singles from their 80s comeback: "That Was Then, This Is Now" from 1986's "Then & Now - The Best of The Monkees" and 1987's should've-been-huge "Heart & Soul" from the trio's "Pool It" album. Both fine songs that deserved to be included here...all in all, both are fine collections.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2007-03-31

This is a band who hit it big in the 60's,and had a Tv show as well. Here is a good collection of their songs.I got into this band in about 1985 when i heard a few of their songs being played.I said to myself now thats a good band, and i remembered their Tv show but it hadnt been shown on TV for a number of years. So i went and bought an album,it was a greatest hits album and i just kept playing it over and over.
Most of my friends were into the modern scene, but i kept plucking bands out like this, and when you listen to music like this band here the then mid eighties rock was poor in comparison.
(Theme From) The Monkees ,Last Train To Clarksville ,I Wanna Be Free,I'm A Believer,Stepping Stone,Look Out(Here Comes Tomorrow),Pleasent Valley Sunday,Daydream Believer, and there is a stack of other songs here.

3 out of 5 stars Could do without.......2007-01-10

I thought I needed this...I listened to it...decided that I was wrong. Not as I remembered.

5 out of 5 stars Goin' Down is the best song on earth!!!.......2006-09-09

Actually, I only say that because I am the only person who can sing it. (That includes Micky Dolenz.)
This is a really good band!!! I like them very much, they're funny AND they have good music. AND they're G-rated. AND they're cute. Micky is ugly but funny and has a good voice. Mike is good-looking, also funny, and writes good songs. Davy Jones is annoying, sings like a duck, and is VERY cute. Peter is real funny, also good-looking, and has a really bad voice.
The karaoke CD was dumb, but maybe I only think that because my mom and I only sing the backup, so it was just instrumental. LOL
My favorite songs on this are "I'm a Believer" (duh) "Randy Scouse Git" (creepy but cool) "Mary, Mary" (I can play that on the phone!!!) "The Girl That I Knew Somewhere" "Your Auntie Grizelda" and "Goin' Down". My only regret is that there was no "This Just Doesn't Seem to be my Day." BEST SOUNDTRACK SONG IN THE WORLD!!!
I love this TV show, CD, and own a shirt that says The Monkees on it. Plus I'm 12 years old. So they've survived 40 years. Wow.
P.S. I hate the Porpoise Song and Listen to the Band because they are terrible. Last Train to Clarksville annoys me. Otherwise it was 100% good.

Album Description

The Turtles are one of the most fondly remembered '60s pop acts—quite an achievement considering that they came up in an era dominated by Motown, The Beatles and other musical giants. After releasing a series of chart-topping singles, including the #1 hit "Happy Together," the band broke up in 1970. Singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan continued as a duo under the name Flo & Eddie, recording albums, hosting their own syndicated radio show, and singing backup for T. Rex, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Blondie, and many others. In 1985, they reformed The Turtles as a very successful touring outfit.

Happy Together: The Very Best Of The Turtles collects the band's biggest hits, including the career-defining "Happy Together" and Top 20 smash hits "You Showed Me," "You Baby," and "Elenore." The album also features an early Warren Zevon-penned song, "Outside Chance," and Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe," as well as the classic protest anthem "Eve of Destruction."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Great Groups Of Years Gone By.......2007-06-18

This is one of the groups of the 60's if you want something to remember, or learn about from back then. They had a lot of great hits along with Peter & Gordon, Chad & Jeremy, Herman's Hermits, Gerry and the Pacemakers, & the Lovin Spoonful, just to name a few. Don't take my word for it. Listen to the sample songs and buy it for yourself. I just happened to grow up in the 60's so I didn't have a problem loving every song. After you buy this you may want to try some of the other groups next. It becomes a Blast into the Past or for those like me, a trip down Memory Lane.

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection.......2007-04-14

This is a very good collection of the Turtles' biggest hits. Their lite, pop-rock was fun to listen too when I was a kid and still is! While some of the lyrics may not be the most profound, their music is enjoyable. My favorites are the classic "Happy Together", "You Baby," "She'd Rather Be With Me," "Elenore," and "It Ain't Me Babe."

5 out of 5 stars Happy Together..........2007-02-03

I'm a fan of 60's music. "Happy Together" is one of those songs of my elementary school days. I rate this classic collection five stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Cooking Turtles.......2006-11-10

These guys were great in the sixties.....Now those of us who once drifted away have come back and there we find the Turtles. Still sounding as good as they did back then...........it was great to run into these guys again...

5 out of 5 stars Feel good hits from the 60's.......2006-11-06

These are the essential Feel-Good hits from the 60's. This cd features most of the Turtles happy songs. There are a couple of minor hits missing, but they're hardly missed from this collection. The Turtles had the great talent of producing happy, playful songs (Happy Together) as well as meaningful music (Eve of Destruction). The music of the 60's is definitely represented in this greatest hits collection.
