5 out of 5 stars Widespread Rules!!.......2007-06-27

I recently crushed my foot(broken in several places) and have been recooperating with the help of W.P. Although I have been heavily medicated most of the time this is still some of the greatest music I have ever heard. I've been a Widespread fan for a while, but until recently I have only owned 3 of their CD's. In the last month I've purchased every CD they have. They just get better and better. I can't wait til I break something else!

4 out of 5 stars Nice rebound........2006-09-29

Released in 1994, this is Widespread Panic's fourth CD. It is 56 minutes long, but there is about 3 minutes of silence in the middle of the last track. The sound quality is very good. The album sounds much better than the previous album. Credit should go to John Keane who produced the album and plays on some of the tracks.

Widespread Panic put two excellent albums, where they were mostly a quartet. These albums had excellent, hard driving southern rock type songs. They were distinctive and the interesting.

On the third album, Everyday, the group expanded to a sextet. There sound became muddled and muted. It was more like their live act, where everyone is playing at once, whether or not they should be. Many on the songs sounded indistinquishable. And then there was the addition of John Herrman's piano playing that consisted of pounding the keys and sounded out of place in many parts.

On this fourth album, Ain't Life Grand, the group reverts back to the sound on the first 2 albums. The production and mix are brought under control. It all sounds great and you can really enjoy the band.

There is quite a bit more variety and experimentation on this CD. There are some accoustic tracks. Jack sounds similar to Marshall Tucker.

Almost all of the songs on this CD are very good. And there is some excellent music to accompany them. And, you can really hear the playing.

The last song, Fishwater, is really only about 4 minutes long. It is followed by 2 minutes of silence and then a really nice acoustic guitar piece. It is excellent and I don't know why it was hidden at the end of the CD.

The only downside is the cover of Can't Get High. It has got to be about the worst song Widespread Panic has ever done. It is just a bad song from all angles. It is poorly written and poorly performed. For some reason, it is one of the songs that got the most airplay.

I think this is the last really good studio album from Widespread Panic. Future albums would revert back to that muddled sound. All of the albums do have some great songs, and some great playing. It is just none of them are good from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome original Panic album.......2006-07-17

This was probably the second album I'd ever listened to from Panic but as with the first album ('Till the medicine takes) I was blown away by how awesome their music is...which has prompted me to go to as many shows as I can get to. I would highly recommend this cd toany panic fan and even those who have never heard their music.

5 out of 5 stars PANIC stricken from that moment on...!.......2006-04-28

This was my first WSP purchase. When it was first released back in '94 I bought it even though I hadn't heard any of their music yet. But I remember hearing "Little Kin" for the first time while reading Col. Bruce's whacked liner notes (my first introduction to him, too) and knowing right then and there that I was hooked!

Twelve years and numerous shows later, plus having since bought everything else they've put out, this one is still my favorite. "Jack", "Blackout Blues" (especially great for listening to while skiing!), and the title track are standouts that rank at the top of my list.

There's not a dud track here. If you don't have it, get it! While you're at it, check out some Col. Bruce and/or the ARU, too!

5 out of 5 stars ain't life grand- widespread panic.......2004-09-23

With their fourth album, Widespread Panic shows the world how music is really made. The album "Ain't Life Grand" takes music to a new level. Guests like John Keane (who recently composed the music for the tv show CSI), David Blackmon(who has also worked with Jerry Reed), Adrienne Fishe and Ronnie Gizmo (who play with Cool Joe Funky Soul Symbols) also had a part in the making of this album. With hits like "Ain't Life Grand", "Heroes", "Can't Get High", "Fishwater", and "Airplane", this album is already promising of a good time. John Bell belts out amazing lyrics that anyone can relate to and Dave Schools rips it up on the bass. Everyone should just do themselves a favor and buy this album today.

4 out of 5 stars Not Velvet Revolver, but a strong post Guns N' Roses effort for Slash.......2005-10-26

"Ain't Life Grand"(2000). Slash's Snakepit's second album.

By the year 2000,Slash had not only left the 1990's as being one of the best guitarists of both the 80's and the 90's,but also as one of the best guitarists of all time. While Slash may not be Ace Frehley,he has left behind some of the most killer guitar work of ***all*** time--and in 2000,about six or five years after Slash had left Guns N' Roses, his post GN'R band(Slash's Snakepit)released their second album, entitled "Ain't Life Grand". How did the album meausure up? Read on for my review of this:

This album, while it is not up to par with either Guns N' Roses' music or Velvet Revolver's music,is one of the best post Guns N'Roses albums any member of GN'R relesed. It is basically a rock album, and,as several other Guns N' Roses fans have said, could have been the last Guns N' Roses album that replaced "The Spaghetti Incident?". The album opens up with "Been There Lately",which is a good and decent way to open an album, but once the album is past track one,it starts to get better. "Life's Sweet Drug" is,in a different way,a strong leftover of "Mr. Brownstone" off of "Appetite For Destruction","Ain't Life Grand" has a great 40's/jazz influence to it,"Mean Bone" has a really catchy hook to it,while the album's closing track,"The Alien",is a really good and interesting song.It quite possibly could have closed "Use Your Illusion II". I won't give away everything here, but while the dialogue on both "Mean Bone" and "Serial Killer" is both unnessecary and unneeded, and while Slash doesn't sound as good on this album as he did in Guns N' Roses and how he does in Velvet Revolver,he(Slash)still provides some killer guitar work here on this CD. The lead vocalist on this album,Rod Jackson, has a really catchy and strong voice which is similiar to the singing of both Lenny Kravitz and a British accent. Slash's guitar work on this record both sound really good, and all of those three things, along with the really good songwriting on this record, are both part of what make this album so good.

If you are a Guns N' Roses fan, this CD is a must have. If you don't own any GN'R studio albums yet, then I suggest getting them in the order they were released(AFD,Lies,UYI1,UYI2,and The Spaghetti Incident?;if you can tolerate it)and then working your way up from there and Velvet Revolver before you buy this album, but if you like both Guns N'Roses and Slash and you miss the days when Guns N' Roses were big, then this album is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Are you ready to ROCK........2005-07-26

This album is great the best song on here is Shine. I actually don't have this album right now because it snapped I was so mad I hope I can get a new one some day because the songs on here totally rock the stereo.

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but still very good.......2005-02-12

The first track I heard off of "Ain't Life Grand" was "Mean Bone." The story is sort of interesting. After getting into Guns N' Roses, I decided to download a few tracks of Slash's Snakepit as a sample. When I connected my new iPod, it automatically downloaded all the tracks on my library to the device. I hadn't yet listened to "Mean Bone" so that night I had my iPod on shuffle and suddenly this weird song started playing. It was a woman's voice with some funky beat in the background. I was like, "What is THIS?!" I was about to switch it off when all of a sudden I heard the guitar intro roaring into play and the lead singer's voice literally growling.

Yes, it was quite a surprise, and I immediately fell in love with the fierce attitude of the song. I found out it was "Mean Bone," and ever since I've been listening to it repetitively.

I haven't heard every track on this CD, but I have heard most of them, and although it's certainly acquired taste as someone else pointed out (best to listen to Gn'R first and move on from there), for fans of rock - REAL rock - this will be a breath of fresh air. In a decade of Limp Bizcuits it's no wonder this album flopped and the band broke up soon after its release.

4 out of 5 stars A Mature Band, an Evolved Sound.......2004-06-30

What does a band do when in its first half dozen albums it has established itself as a populist band of rural boys who alternate between a musical love for metal and roots music, and a lyrical bent which features songs about sex, metaphysics, and
Arkansas ways? Change, grow, and flourish, of course!

"Ain't Life Grand" shows a Black Oak Arkansas with a more polished sound than any of their previous albums, and yet a sound which can satisfy both the band's "rocker" fans and the fans of the band's quirky, populist absurdities.

Although Black Oak Arkansas was a band from the south who sang about regional themes, rock historians tend to place Black Oak Arkansas in a different basket from the other "southern" bands such as the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band or Charlie Daniels Band. Black Oak Arkansas went their own way, as self-taught music populists who combined a love for regional settings and metaphysics with a love for both heavy metal and bluegrass conventions. Although Black Oak Arkansas' early studio albums might be comparable to the softer sound of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, the band live (and on their live album) rocked with a three guitar attack as if metal were going out of style. During their early days, musicianship (excepting Tommmy Aldridge) was not considered their strong point--instead, in the pre-punk era, this was a band of kids who picked up guitars to escape rural poverty.

"Ain't Life Grand", however, shows that the band was not entirely immune to the influence of "southern rock", nor to the earlier influences of the sixties artists. Moreover, "Ain't Life Grand" shows that even the most resolutely populist band can acquire a bit of polish after spending a decade on the road 300 nights a year. The result is an entirely pleasing album.

The album opens with a surprising cover of George Harrison's "Taxman". BOA had a love for backing harmonies, which work very well here. In "Fancy Nancy", the band tackles one of their usual lyrical exercises in somehow retro-sensibility erotic longing, over a solid, very appealing bass-driven melody. In "Keep On", the band deftly handles an upbeat country-pop song, and in particular Jim Dandy's vocals have a sweetness to them which belies the usual "mouth full of crackers" image attributed to his work. The songs "Good Stuff" and "Rebel" fit more or less in the traditional "southern rock" mode, while "Back Door Man" features good production values over the band's trademark "nasty" lyrical themes. "Love Can Be Found" is a jaunty, poppy number celebrating the variety of human expression, while "Diggin' for Gold" is a workable but unmemorable tune. The album closes, though, with two of the most fun Black Oak Arkansas tunes. In "Crying' Shame", a redeeming, ringing guitar-glissandi rocker is accompanied by a winning lyric about the disadvantages of urban living, while "Let Life Be Good to You" is a peppy anthem-like upbeat celebration, the kind of unrestrained common-man bit of fun that Black Oak Arkansas could do so well.

This album is a recognizably Black Oak album, but it shows an Allman Brothers influence not often in evidence for BOA. The productive values are extremely good here, giving the band a richer sound without making them sound over-produced. In past albums, the studio albums seemed to present a somewhat more rockin' Ozark Mountain Daredevils, while the live album had shown a metal party band. This album shows both sides of the band, to good effect.

They say that the road exhausts and drains a band, but this album, the culmination of years on the road, shows that it can mature, define and polish a band, too.

"Ain't Life Grand" is a fascinating album, of a curiously interesting band.

This is a great cd. Great vocals and great drumming. Oh and lets not forget that guitar player, Slashs shines on this record like never before. The guitar riffs are the strongest he had created since Apittite For Destruction, and the solos are as strong as ever. The lyrics on this album are not exatcly the sasme calaber as Axl Roses but are still great for rock. But thats the problem you can tcompare this to GNR or Velvet Revolver because their is no comparison between the three bands.

Some of My favorite songs on the album are 'Shine' 'Been There Latly' 'Mean Bone' 'Back To The Moment' 'Aint Life Grand' and 'Serrial Killer' these songs offer the best vocal performance by the lead singer and show off some of Slashs best guitar work, especialy on 'Shine' thats probley the best song this band ever recorded.

So while Slash's Snake Pit isnt Guns N' Roses or Valvet Rovelver and while this album isnt Use Your Illusion II its still a great rock record. Be sure to check out It's Five O' Clock Somewhere as it is an even better album then this.

    2 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment.......2004-12-04

I spent much time in my "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" review bashing all the people that called Slash's Snakepit "bargain bin fodder," but that is the impression that I get when I listen to the album "Ain't Life Grand."
On this album Slash seems to put emphasis on the fact that he is half-black, going so far as to thanks all his "ho's" in the liner notes. That also shows in the songs, which overall have a mix of Sam & Dave R&B with Lenny Kravitz-style rock. There are some good songs on here such as hard-rocking "Been There Lately" and the New Orleans boogie of the title track. "The Alien" has a terrible chorus lyrically, stuffed with cliches, but the chorus musically sounds great. Other than those, this album is terrible. It is not that the songs are filler, I believe that Slash and the band poured much passion into writing and recording these, it is just that they are no good. Cuts such as "Mean Bone" and "Life's Sweet Drug" sound exactly like, well, bargain bin fodder. Slash shows considerable restraint in the songs, trying to make way for the other members to show their talent as well. It is a generous idea, the only problem being that the other members aren't very talented in the first place. The only member besides Slash that I could maybe see being successful is the bassist. Slash holds back on his solos, which sound more like Kravitz than Slash, it that is a HUGE disappointment. I bought this album to hear Slash.
Slash had put this band together to be a permanent lineup, although it dissolved shortly afterward due to poor record sales and Velvet Revolver. I wish he had stuck to his previous lineup, the chemistry in that group was obvious. Stay away from this album, it is a major ripoff at over $40.00. Hardcore Slash fans might enjoy this, but only buy it if you can find it for $14.99 or less.

4 out of 5 stars Wailing Guitar - Gotta Love It.......2003-12-08

Wow - so Im a couple of years late picking up this CD - and I gotta say I owe it ro becoming a hard core Ryan Roxie fan from him playing with Alice Cooper and Dads Porno Mag. I initialy picked this CD up just to listen to Roxie on the guitars and expected nothing special and then - BAM - this CD rocks! Been there Lately, Shine, Speed Parade, Serial Killer - they are all kick ass rock tracks. Sure - there is nothing "new" here, but they arent pretending there is. Rod Jackson's voice is perfectly suited for this kinda stuff, and well - Slash and Roxie are just awesome axe men!!

If you're looking for a straight out Rock and Roll album to jump around playing air guitar to - get this- give it a listen or two and rip out your leather pants!

    5 out of 5 stars Ain't Slash Grand.......2003-04-10

This is THE hard rock anthem. Forget Back In Black, Rocks, or The Black Album. All greats, classics for all ages. So, you may be asking what this CD has over the others. Those albums have their hard driving anthem rock, pulsing metal riffs, and as much blues base as the King himself, but ask yourself...Does every song on these albums have the potential to be an instantly persuasive, beating, gain-laden hair metal icon? --Slash and his former band have put their foot down, as the true princes of the six string, delivering a stylistic assortment of tracks. On this CD you'll find everything from the jazzy title track "Ain't Life Grand", to the heavy metal "Alien", and of course, plenty of the smooth hard rock we've come to expect from truly one of the most gifted, adaptive and stylish guitarists of all time.

          Album Description

Arguably Japans greatest acoustic guitar master, Sumide combines a funky percussive attack with a jazzers chord vocabulary, a bluesmans soul and throws in a few delicate ballads for balance. If you love great acoustic guitar playing this is it!
