"Four Stars...inventive and ambitious."
Product Description
Untying the Not from the String Cheese Incident shows an unprecendented expansion of the band's already broad vision and performance philosophy. Recorded with producer Youth (The Verve, Paul Oakenfold), SCI creates their most mature and provacative disc to date.
Untying the Not now includes an additional bonus disc. Eight additional tracks totaling over 69 minutes of music have been added to Untying the Not. Four brand new unreleased studio tracks and several of the band's favorite jams from 2003 have been professionally mastered and offered exclusively in the new Untying the Not packaging.

Customer Reviews:
A different sort of Cheese.......2007-04-13
SCI mixes and matches genres here, but the outcome isn't always listenable.
I find 'Sirens' and 'Valley of the Jig' incredibly annoying and skip them every time they come round.
'Mountain Girl' and 'Tinder Box' are borderline emo/industrial and not executed very well in my opinion. I listened to them a few times and that was all I needed to hear.
'Elijah' is a somber piece that sounds befitting of a movie soundtrack, but it's rather tame if Cheese is expected.
I'm being overly critical, really. The rest of the album is eminently enjoyable. I would describe the theme as a slightly trippy Elton John meets Panic (what I mean is most evident on 'Who Am I' and the opening track). 'Time Alive' has sent me into psychedelic shock every time I have listened to it.
I have not yet had an opportunity to listen to the bonus disc since my copy did not come with it. It is available on P2P networks...

A real journey.......2005-11-21
a buy/try. And I must say that I am VERY happy I did. This cd is
already one of my fave's. This is a display of talent and vision
seldom achieved in today's music world. definitely an exploration.
the songs are catchy and meaningful, with the middle of the album
becoming a delicious swirl of various things, then the songs seem to re-emerge, heartfelt till the end. Todays jamband scene is so
alive and creative! I feel appreciation for the risks the artists
occaisionally take.some want SCI to keep doing the same thing
over and over, and their brand of jamgrass IS great, but I also think these types of efforts help push this genre to new heights
I have a feeling I will be fond of this music till the day I
punt the ol' bucket.
Not like Live SCI, if that's what you're looking for.......2005-10-05
This isn't anything like the Live selections from the Carnival '99 album. There is no jamming on this album. If, however, you are curious about the band and what they are capable of, check this album out. I personally didn't like the album at first. I thought it was a huge mistake and wanted to stick to the live material. Of course, after a few listens, my expectations gradually diminished and I was able to enjoy Untying the Not.
Wake Up ----- Sounds close to pop and traditional SCI.
Sirens -----Very optimistic light tune dressed in dark clothing. Still, it has dark clothing.
Looking Glass ---- Probably one of the only about 4 songs on this album that I could see being performed live.
Orion's Belt ---- The trip into the instrumentals begins, this one being sax, ambient noise driven.
Mountain Girl ---- Continuing "trip" of what I guess is an instrumental, but it is still wasted on me. Sounds like a collage of noise to me still.
Lonesome Road Blues ---- Nearing the destination of the instrumentals, the collage comes to an end and delivers us to vocal harmony short and sweet.
Elijah --- Instrumental gently swaying with piano, strings, and is most likely the eye to this hurricane. Sad as it comes to an end too quickly.
Valley of the Jig ---- Techno beat churning with a bluegrass feel. Two worlds that I don't think should have met.
Tinder Box --- SCI seems to have returned to their own album finally and delivers a foreboding beat that once again gives us something to think about.
Just Passin' Through ---- A slight decrease in pace, but not letting up on the theme of mortality. From this point on, lyrics seem to almost supersede the actual music.
Who Am I? ----- What would be expected of SCI from anyone just picking up this album after hearing a live excerpt.
Time Alive ----- We can almost feel the ride coming to an end, and the lyrics brace us for it and somehow it's not as sad as we thought it would be.
On My Way ----- This somehow just washes over you without offending or exciting, delivering you to the conclusion. Rounds out the album and leaves you satisfied because by now you've forgotten about Mountain Girl.
You most likely won't be disappointed, but you should think twice before exposing it to people who haven't heard SCI Carnival '99 or any collection of live material yet. And if YOU are one of these people, then I'd recommend you pick this one up to satisfy your curiosity.
Warnings (in my opinion)---
There is a "techno" feel surrounding about 40% of the album.
Only purchase if you own headphones.
Single tracks should not be listened out of order.
I love progresive change but this is to much.......2005-09-14
