3 out of 5 stars Can't sleep in the "Bedroom".......2004-09-05

When a band has oddly-monikered members like "J" and "Achilles," you know it must be worth looking at. New York-based The Fever burst onto the scene with the delicious trash'n'glam rock EP "Pink on Pink." Now the weirdly-named band members follow up with an solid debut LP, "Red Bedroom," full of the sort of music you'd hear in a robot-themed club. It's plenty of fun, if not much more.

It opens with a bizarre hybrid of percussion, bass and organ in the catchy "Cold Blooded," followed by the heavy organ of "Gray Ghost" and the stomping percussion of "Slow Club." But the music gets perky and catchy, making you want to dance when Fever breaks into the infectious "Ladyfingers" and "Labor of Love."

Some of the songs are definitely lacking -- "Hexxed" sounds completely aimless, like the band was just jamming during a creative lull. They get back their spark in robotic dance numbers like "Scorpio," a simple track that keeps repeating "S-C-O-R-P-I-O/scorpio, scorpio/... my sign is rising!". But the Fever gets surprisingly poignant in anthemic final track, the nostalgic "Diamond Days."

The Fever tend to dip back into 80s-flavored music, with lots of influence from Devo and Grandmaster -- a mix of the catchy and the chilly. And while "Pink on Pink" was fun, "Red Bedroom" shows that they've polished their sound a little. The sleazy-computer-club sound is still there, it's just more refined than in their EP.

The music is a fun, catchy mash of guitar, bass, Achilles' spasmic drums, and J's rippling organ work, transforming it from merely toe-tapping to insanely catchy. And the quality of Geremy Jasper's vocals is hard to tell in tracks like "Scorpio," where he sounds like a drunken android, but in "Ladyfingers" he lets rip with all his overwrought howling might.

At times he' s totally drowned out by the music, but maybe that's not a bad thing. The songwriting is very vivid and captivating, but it rarely makes a lot of sense. They seem almost like a hallucination, with smoke pouring out of cold lips, tigers slipping through zebra stripes, vampires, and gray ghosts: "You paint yrself in a corner/gold threaded white lies/needles in my eyes..." and "your heavy head'll break your neck/rest it next to me/dream machine/the smoke rings circle your eyes..."

Wild wails, nightmarish songwriting and frenetic grooves make up the flashy android club sound of "Red Bedroom." Fun dance music, but the sort of thing that has to grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars Red Bedroom = Red Rum.......2004-07-20

If Billy Idol and Nicky Sixx beat up the rest of the Beach Boys, kidnapped Brian Wilson and took him to every dirty bar in Mexico before locking him in a studio for three days with nothing but old porno mags, Red Bedroom is the album he'd make. The Fever is music's answer to television's Three's Company. Jasper is a like a vocal Jack Tripper. He knocks and kicks over each song with John Ritter's chaotic-grace while Pony's baselines bounce more than Suzanne Somers returning from a jazzercise class. Sanchez's guitar is sexier than when Terri played the naughty nurse and J's organ play is sleazier than one of Larry's come-ons. Achilles keeps the whole gang together and grounded better than a one of Janet's orchestrated group hugs and hits harder than Mr. Furley's karate chops. The Fever is crazed antics and limitless madness and Red Bedroom is like a reckless night at the Regal Beagle. If you've ever tried to wash a regrettable night out of your soul with a shower and some mouth wash, only to find yourself reveling about it a week later and returning to the scene of the crime, The Fever is your band and Red Bedroom is your soundtrack.

Also, if you get a chance to see these guys live do it, they are all this and a stick of dynamite.

4 out of 5 stars Nice...Pretty Varied.......2004-06-26

The Fever's a pretty decent band, they always remind me of '80s rock, but that's just me. I like this CD because the song types vary. "Dream Machine" is sort of slow and creepy, "Scorpio" is like a slighty techno song, and "Gray Ghost" sounds nearly ska in a few parts. It's a very nice mix of different styles of songs. It's certainly worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Great job for their first full length.......2004-05-23

Now I'll admit that this cd was not as great as I thought it would be. 4 stars because this cd is quite good, but not over-the-top good. The Fever's Pink on Pink E.P. was 15 minutes of pure, spastic genius, so I bought this cd with very very high expectations. However, they seem to tone down on the frenetic energy that you feel on Pink on Pink. Ladyfingers is on Red Bedroom, but it's a different, less intense version.

But enough negativity. This actually is a great cd. They do a great job mixing new wave pop rock and caustic indie/punk. It's unique all the way through. It's like if you took Devo, locked them in a room with 15 hungry badgers, and said "Write some songs for us." Crazy, squawking-to-serenading vocals, hypnotic keyboards, fast, frantic, punky guitar work, robot voices....Yep, that's Red Bedroom. Enjoy!

Product Description

Full of brazen piano buildups and full-vibrato confessionals, The Red Bedroom is like a great lost breakup album of David Bowie and Elton John, where the two tortured souls channel frustrations into the third person. As a concept album, then, it works. Ten tracks celebrate backroom lovin' in the hot Milwaukee sun with a patina of mid-'70s dust and grease on every sound surface. Between the sensational bombast of "Humankind" and the exposed ballad foppery of "Baby Takes It Slow" is the sense that Mallman could've been a lost Bowie protégé using all the stops of Mott the Hoople with less overt blues and more soft rock schmaltz. Featuring members of the Promise Ring, the Replacements, 12 Rods, and Fog, the album allows Mallman to keep his concept artist's abstractions while creating an un-ironically enjoyable art pop treasure in the meantime. 1. 3 out of 5 stars I've Heard Better.......2006-09-25

I love the Red Elvises, have loved them for about seven years now. I've heard and own all thier albums and intend on buying the newest one whenever it gets released.
However, I must say that Bedroom Boogie and Welcome to the Freakshow are not thier best albums. Really, Grooving to the Moscow Beat, Surfing in Siberia, I Wanna See You Bellydance are their best stuff. Better than Sex is okay, and Shake Your Pelvis is decent. It all begins to go up at Lunatics and Poets; personally, I think thier best album since Bellydance.
If you want to hear good Red Elvises, check out those other albums and if you really begin to like them, check these ones out too, because it's as someone else said, a little mellower than thier other stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Effectively Not Red Elvises.......2004-11-14

Quite simply, this is not really a Red Elvises album. It was an album written entirely by Zhenya Kolykhanv, who left the band shortly after to pursue other projects - and you can see why. The Red Elvises has always been about fun live rock and roll, and this is a mellow pop album.

Now that's not to say that this is bad music. But those who keep spamming the review form about how great this music is, and how horrible it is that the Elvises don't play it live, should check out Zhenyas new band Zeerok, and leave the Elvises to do what they do best.

5 out of 5 stars Bedroom Boogie - still AWESOME!.......2002-08-07

I keep this one in my CD player all the time-
"Ready To Fly" - what a great song

I LOVE THIS ALBUM- LYRICS ARE GREAT MUSIC IS AWESOME.
TOO BAD THEY HARDLY PLAY THOSE SONGS LIVE- THEY SHOULD,
SO THEIR "OTHER" FANS COULD RELATE.

5 out of 5 stars Bedroom Boogie Rocks !.......2002-08-02

It is one of my favorite albums by Red Elvises...
But, it is a kind of solo album by Zhenya Rock- singer, songwriter, and lead guitar player of this true power trio..
A definite departure from the sounds of the Elvises, this album is a musical journey evolving from playing in front of hundreds of thousands of people, sharing himself, his gift, and his art, travelling the world , making people laugh, scream and go crazy. With this gift Zhenya offers a look into his life. Zhenya Rock is a truly an artist in every sense of the word. Countless television and motion picture appearances, along with contributing music to the soundtracks of a long list of films including: "Six String Samurai", "Heartbreakers", "Skippy", and "Pitch". .
Buy it and enjoy it- great music!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Subtle perfection.......2007-07-18

Ever since Azure Ray broke up, there has been a piece of my heart that has been longing for a similar sound. I am so glad I found Petracovich, because that's exactly what they deliver: quiet, introspective music with just enough emotion to bring it to life. Overall this album is very simple; not in a low-budget amateur kind of way, more of a less-is-more approach. I also like the wide variety of sounds on here which include everything from crows cawing to tinkly music box notes to trains crossing in the night. There's also not a single cliché or cheesy moment on the album, and Jessica Peters' vocals are at just the right balance with the music - never too teen-pop, never too over-the-top, just right. I'm eagerly waiting for the next Petracovich release! Check this out!

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the good stuff.......2005-12-03

Jessica Peters, aka Petracovich and Co., is worthy of the ear of anyone who appreciates being moved deeply by voice, melody and lyric. It is difficult to aptly describe this music. It is, to me, Jessica Peters writing and singing in a style called 'Petracovich'. Traditional sounds mixed with synth and the most gorgeous voice blend in what I suppose some might compare to songs that went big from epic movies like Dr. Shivago only modernized in a way you might imagine Azure Ray would perform them. Oddly enough I also catch glints of Beatles influences in her music as well. Got all that?

If you want to see Jessica sing one of these songs go to
http://www.tedmills.com/2005/09/petracovich_the_new_video.html
and see how Ted Mills has painted the song 'Others' into posterity.

I mentioned more about Jessica's voice in my review of her other release, Blue Cotton Skin. Summary: Childlike Innocence, Whispery, Like an entity - reaches right out and touches you. Hard to drag that horse around with more adjectives. You just have to hear her and be touched by her to understand. If you do and you're good with articulation then please come back here and do her some justice with a better description.

With lyrics like:
"
Oh time is short
Nothing really works
We're staying up
So late that it hurts
...
"
from 'All I Have To Say' it's difficult to listen to some songs at some times without getting a bit choked up. While Pink Floyd proved that the emotional "drive by" is often desirable, more often than not Jessica's voice will be there to pick up the pieces so it's safe to close your eyes and fall into this music.

All told this rates amongst the 5 best artists I've got my hands on in the past decade and I buy a lot of music covering a wide range of styles. Jessica you are a gift. The rest of you unwrap her and see, you'll be amazed.

I hope this was helpful. -fcg-

5 out of 5 stars something fresh - it's okay to breath now.......2005-09-11

Petracovich, aka Jessica Peters with a little help from her friends, is THE most refreshing new singer/songwriter (artist) to hit the underground for some time. The songs are not all standard formula driven and seem to define themselves. At the same time there are distinct retro vibes hovering in songs like 'Birds in Flight' where there can be heard rhodes-like keys and even some good old hand claps in a sort of beatles reminiscent fashion. A good listen, however, will prove that at the heart of the matter is a sonically unique creature that is more than just the sum of it's 'vibes'.

Peters' voice is without compare. Like a sonic charmer she frequently conjures forth feelings of childlike innocence for some secret place where ancient souls are just being reborn. Often softly spoken in song she can ethereally haunt you and hug you at the same time. Like a best friend she whispers secrets in your ear that seem to know how to unravel your deepest secrets and at the same time at your side so as to never leave you cold or empty. Interestingly enough all I need say about her harmonies, melodies, arrangements (her style) is this: read what was just said of her voice.

She compliments the music with an equally alluring style of lyric. An example poked it's head above ground in the 8/31/5 episode of the television series 'Over There' in the beginning of the song 'Nighttime':

"Night time
Journey to the moon
On the back
Of a big firefly
Take me up above the city
Your hair
Picks up all the lights
Tropical fish in the sky
Take a ride, take a ride, take a ride, take a
Come on
Take me for a ride
Open window's the sign
Staining blue, soaked into my cotton skin
"

This is the perhaps the most enchanting collection of songs you'll find for miles in any direction.

Finally, Petracovich just released a new CD, 'We Are Wyoming'. Amazingly it equals the first and exudes as much kinship to it as both will to you. Like one more step in a path to somewhere undoubetly wonderful. This is a journey you'll want to take.

Cheers all - hope this useful.

5 out of 5 stars This is an amazing group that sounds as smooth as silk!!!!.......2004-05-04

Whether you'r just wanting to relax,or maybe just dieing to here something that has great vocals, and catchy lerics.Well then look no further!Because this album does all that, and whole lot more,I mean this music kind of sound's like nothing I really can put into word's.The best thing I can tell you to do,is to check out some of the MP3'S,or maybe just go to www.Indie music.com,and check out their rather lengthy samples. Then once you've done that all you'll have to do is figure out where to send the money.I'm serious this music is really cool, not to mention the fact that you'll have an awfully hard time trying to label it.All I can say is it has a very smooth almost fluid like type of soothing sound that will leave you only wanting more, and along with the great leric's,and vocals,I'd go as far to say it's a must have for anyone who does,or doesn't like mellow music.I mean I really can't stand group's like Pink Floyd, and I mainly just listen to alot of Power metal, and not all that much else, but I must say that this is really something that should be considered POP,but ofcourse it would have to be good POP,if there is such a thing???

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical and musical genius........2004-01-13

I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes an unignorable melody . Although Jessica Peters emits a mostly airy and gentle sound, this is not the kind of music you would want playing as background music in a dental office as it is too powerful to overlook. Like a feather in the breeze, Peters' voice grabs your imagination while her synthetic sounds take you for the journey. Before you know it, the album is over, leaving you wishing for more. A true escape from the mundane of the everyday world.
