Out-of-State Plates is the byproduct of nearly a decade of Fountains of Wayne's stellar power-pop pursuits. The 28 performances (two other tracks are brief, snarky radio excerpts) culled together on this double-disc anthology may represent demos and previously unreleased leftovers from the band's three albums, but their consistent quality belies any notion of the extraneous. Also spotlighted are two new performances: the rollicking rush "Maureen" and the infectious, pop-souful "The Girl I Can't Forget." An eclectic slate of covers ranges from wistful takes on Jackson Browne's "These Days" and ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head" to a spry, countrified version of Gene Pitney's "Today's Teardrops" and their delicious, barely tongue-in-cheek cult-fave version of Britney Spears's "...Baby One More Time." Another delight is "California Sex Lawyer," while the mirthful "I Want an Alien for Christmas" and "The Man in the Santa Suit" offer up some welcome holiday cheer. The package also includes a track-by-track commentary by band mainstays Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Mixed bag for the Fountains fan.......2007-04-02

If you're a fan, you'll probably like this disk set. Like most "previously unreleased" compilations it has some gems, some dogs and some oddities. If you are looking for your first disk from these guys, try Welcome Intersate Managers or Utopia Parkway.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as Welcome Interstate Managers..........2007-01-10

Did not find much interesting or, frankly, good on this albumn - unlike other Fountains of Wayne efforts in the past. Kind of a let down...

4 out of 5 stars For a bunch of leftovers, these are really good!.......2006-12-03

After three studio albums, FoW decided to put out this double CD collection of B-sides, live tracks, and demo's. This delightful collection of "leftovers" continues the band's talent for writing catchy, melodic power-pop. Truth be told, they could've marketed the entire collection as another studio album if they wanted to. But I think they wanted to put out this collection just to appease us fans until their next album comes out (sometime next year), which I'm very glad they did! In the meantime, I'll just have to settle to listening these songs over and over again! :)

Stand out tracks:

Maureen
California Sex Lawyer
Janice's Party
I Know You Well
I'll Do The Driving
The Girl I Can't Forget
Kid Gloves
I Want An Alien For Christmas
The Man In The Santa Suit
Imperia

If you're into power pop, you should check out this other band by the name of Material Issue (R.I.P., Jim Ellison - God rest his soul...).

4 out of 5 stars out of state plates.......2006-11-05

The remakes they do from other artists are great. They take a fluff song from Brittiny Spears and turn it into a work of art and take a great classic from ELO and do an excellent remake. A lot of their other tunes are very good. Theres a few lame tunes but on a two CD set you have to expect it. Great Christmas song included.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for FOW Fans.......2006-07-26

These two discs are as good as any FOW have done -- even if they are demos, B sides, novelty cuts and experiments. "The Night I Can't Remember and the Girl I Can't Forget" is a perfect demonstration of their perfect pop sensibilities. Clever lyrics and better hooks.

That's followed by their version of "Baby One More Time" that is completely different from Brittney's but just as good. The notes from Adam and Chris are very funny yet...

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description

Michael Harris and manager John Purdom had the collective vision of a progressive rock band some years ago. Through an ad on the internet, Michael teamed up with Ted Leonard, the great vocalist of the US band Enchant. After Michael and Ted spent quite some time crafting and demoing the material, they then united with the rhythm section of Haji's Kitchen and Outworld keyboardist Bobby Williamson to form Thought Chamber and record their debut album Angular Perceptions, an album full of catchy melodies and outstanding musicianship.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Somewhat unique sound for right now.......2007-07-23

I bought this solely off the clips here on Amazon not knowing anything about the background of the band. It hasn't left my playlist since I got it. While I'm a fan overall of progressive music, I tend to gravitate more to great songwriting and execution (Porcupine Tree) over great 'shredding' (Dream Theater). Their sound and style feels somewhat timeless with an underlying homage to bands like Kansas, Yes, and Genesis while still maintaining a more modern heaviness that appeals to fans today. As far as first efforts go, you won't find many this good (which hopefully bodes well for their future).

As good as the album is, I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I sense they have an even better album ahead of them if they put in the work. I only hope they keep all their "side projects" where they belong (on the side) and keep focus on a potentially great band.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of endlessly waiting for a new Kansas release??!?.......2007-07-11

This is great stuff from a band that features the outstanding vocal talents of Enchant's Ted Leonard. I'm really impressed with their Kansas approach to the music. I especially like tracks 7 and 8. So, if you tired of all the compilations that Kansas has to offer and you can't wait for the new Proto Kaw, check this one out. You will be happy that you did. This has to be one of the top releases of 2007! Thanks Mr. Zucker.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting combination.......2007-06-30

Ted Leonard is singing for this super group. The musicians are great and it is very progressive. The only reason I gave it a 4 star rating is because sometimes trying to prove one is a great musician can be done other ways instead of going at a supersonic speed. There are some jazz elements very present and I don't particulalary like that combo. However,if done right, the results are good.

This proves that there is still inventivenes.I feel that Enchant should have been going towards this field. There are elements of fusion, metal, prog and power metal all together.

4 out of 5 stars Technically Sound.......2007-06-18

There's no doubt this group is technically phenominal. The guitar playing is amazing (absolutely amazing!) and the vocals are soaring. Unfortunately, the songs are not quite up to par with the musicianship: tons of technical wizardy overpowers emotion and message. Great promise, not yet achieved.

5 out of 5 stars sweeeeeeet!.......2007-06-06

just picked this up, and i love it!its bands like this that help ease the pain of dream theater's latest suck-fest. brilliant songwriting, and no noodling. rob is a great drummer,he sounds different on this from his Crimeny/ Haji's Kitchen days. you will not be dissapointed ;)

Album Description

These four girls from Brighton, England recorded a monster rock album that pummels and soothes all at once. Previous releases include a full-length, "Rock It To The Moon", and three singles on their own label, Let's Rock Records. They also released singles on Skint sub-label, Indenial, and on the hip UK indie, Fierce Panda. This is their second album and first full-length for Too Pure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars this album does "make me weak at the knees"...........2007-06-30

i feel that i should be slightly apologetic, for reviewing this so late after the release. i actually was exposed to electrelane at a live show with le tigre in 2005. i was hooked, HOOKED after seeing these incredibly talented women perform. it took ages to find "the power out" in hard copy at the local record store, but since i've obtained it, i've relished every nostalgic moment of seeing them live and have consistently put this as my top played songs.

i don't feel that i could more adequately describe their tracks as the very able reviewers below me, but i can say that this is the most hidden jewel of all experimental-indie bands out there. almost every song evokes a very strong emotional response from within, and i have to say, if you're a person who loves being solitary and lean more towards the creative, i'd recommend this album whole-heartedly. it's an anthem album for the melancholy, but secure in their aloneness.

3 out of 5 stars ecclectic addition to my collection.......2007-01-27

I heard "the Valley" and loved it. The rest of the CD is nothing like the valley- but I still enjoy the songs. Reminds me a little of elastica. I put this on my harddrive and mixed it in with some other punky stuff- nice to have female voices in there too.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Albini Produced...What Are You Waiting For?.......2005-03-09

Having just been exposed to Joy Division this summer, it's hard for this reviewer to ignore the similar kind of vibes I get from this, the second LP from Brighton's Electrelane. Steve Albini [The Pixies, Nirvana] seems to restrain his usually dirty production for the whole of this album with the exception of "Take The Bit Between Your Teeth" in lieu of doing his best Martin Hannett impression and even then doesn't do over the top. The all girl group is for all intents and purposes frozen on record in this sparse and doomy yet morbidly moving piece of desolation in a fairly timeless fashion for future generations to discover. The overall sound is much like Patti Smith fronting Ian Curtis' ill-fated band specifically on the "Free Money" influenced "Birds" [Horses, "Birds" ... Hmmm] except for the crisp quality of sound which time and technology have afforded us. Most of the time I'm forced to imagine a stilted Verity Susman, lead singer, screaming out into the night from some isolated, dark alley in the lower/middle class section of a decaying, country nonspecific metropolis, one of the last romantics suffering for the sins of a generation whose idea of love comes from and dies in J. Lo movies and McDonald's commercials. Music this soulful has no right to be made in the 21st century.

3 out of 5 stars sluggish.......2004-09-03

what?
where is this studio located? The studio they recorded the album in...
In an apartment house with very thin walls? angry old people living next door? It seems like it. Otherwise i could not understand these girls. It seems like they cannot afford to play like they would like to play. That they have to be restrained, do their thing quietly, cautiously not to aggravate their nighbours. Or maybe there is a little baby next door, trying to go to sleep and girls of course are well-natured and do not want to disturb.
Or maybe they just had really bad hang-overs from the party last night while recording it.

TAKE THAT BIT BETWEEN YOUR TEETH and THIS DEED would surely rock a lot if they just turned the guitars louder a bit! BIRDS would rip your heart out, if they just managed to put a bit more soul in it! The instrumental YOU MAKE ME WEAK AT THE KNEES would make JIM O'ROURKE jealous, if they just managed to make it sound a bit more sincere. would would would.

I like indie-rock. And i want to be hip and listen to new cool things (like all of us, right). And i wanted to give this album five stars, but just couldn't. Sorry. It has content, but it is brought to us just too poorly. No wonder people like their live performances. Because concerts are usually held in a place, they don't have angry music-haters-neighbours next door. Right? For one track these girls even call the old tired neighbours in and recorded a song together with them (THE VALLEYS).
THE POWER went OUT and never came back?

3 out of 5 stars "Power" shines and dims.......2004-06-30

Soft acoustic indie rock is the content of Electrelane's "The Power Out." The UK quartet has a nice grip on catchy melodies and some interesting instrumentation, but it's held back by a lack of internal cohesion. Oh yes, and the lyrics are just terrible.

The steady "Gone Under Sea" starts the album on a slightly dull note, before expanding out into the poppy "On Parade," the charming drum-led "Birds," the bass-laden country-rocker "Take The Bit Between Your Teeth," bass-keyboard "This Deed," and the gentle ballad "Oh Sombra." It finishes up on a quirky note with the drums'n'keyboard "You Make Me Weak At The Knees."

Electrelane has a pretty good thing going in "The Power Out," even if it never quite takes off -- they do a good job, but it lacks cohesion and enthusiasm. What they lack in fire, they at least make up in versatility -- they mix in some French, German and Spanish songs, taken from the writings of Nietzsche and a sonnet by Juan Boscon.

Probably the best thing about "The Power Out" is the keyboards. Verity Susman manages the sound of an organ in "Love Builds Up," before switching to a sweeping piano solo at the end of the album. Emma Gaze's drums get to both serve as the backdrop and the front instrumentation, while Rachel Dalley and Mia Clarke do some solid background work on, respectively, the bass and guitar.

Susman's vocals are a bit slurred and bland, and often they get buried under the music so you can't tell what she's saying. Of course, given some of the lyrics, that might be a good thing -- typical pop sensibilities, except the writing is blander. "I want to see you/More than anything/Babe I miss you/All day and everyday " is one typical example. Not to mention the vaguely icky "I bet I'd like your underwear" chorus.

Despite the weird, ultra-simplistic lyrics and a few musical duds, "The Power Out" is a pleasany sample of British indie-rock, with plenty of variety and a few artier flourishes. An interesting if flawed listen.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for anyone into Progressive Metal.......2007-04-29

This CD hasn't left my player in weeks!! I love it, actually I like all of Evergreys music, I recently just discovered them, I heard a few tracks from a few CD's and this one is the best out of them all, although their all great this is my favorite! If you love Dream Theater, Symphony X, Queensryche etc you have to pick this up!

3 out of 5 stars Some excellent, memorable ideas for metal amongst less inspiring fare.......2007-04-21

3 1/2

Well put together progressive metal release gets by on impressive arrangements and instrumentation but not without detractions. Bogged down in the 80's-licious, over-gruffed machismo of the singer, some of the ambitious yet still repetitive writing veers more towards pretentious when coupled with this broadway-like quality the album provides. Sometimes the awkwardly languished theatrics teeter out in an unarticulated haze of overreaching, but more often Evergrey dazzles by helping to take the genre into uncharted terrain, equally comfortable at mixing Therion, Dream Theater, and Andrew Lloyd Weber type dynamics in one song. At best, a fantastic, urgent, and dynamic melodic pulse, complimented by the skilled keyboarding throughout, makes beautiful, romantic, mature heavy rock feel as though at times it should appeal to your parents instead. If one is in the young, pseudo-self-consciously-hip phase of musical development perhaps these stabs at an operatic metal will not sit well, but anyone smart enough to process the few noticeable songs for what they try to be on their own will be privy to a few fantastic highlights in the rarely covered, classier side of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars Evergrey's best..........2007-01-19

There are plenty of people who will disagree with me on this, but I have all of Evergrey's albums, and this one is the best, with Recreation Day a close 2nd.

As others have written, this is about a man trying to readjust to life after an alien abduction. The lyrics are effective, and the music is dynamic and powerful. Evergrey, like a lot of prog-metal bands, utilizes a cheesy synth from time to time, but it really works on this album, with the sci-fi spacey theme. They are also further back in the mix than on other efforts, and the result is terrific atmosphere over a powerful, though musically limited band. Eglund's vocals are perfect (and not upper-register whining) here.

Evergrey's not really a 5-star band, but this is a 5-star album. Recreation Day is pretty darn good too. Other efforts are solid but not exceptional. Get this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Evergrey?.......2006-09-08

I have Recreation Day and Monday Morning Apocalypse in addition to In Search Of Truth, and I love each of them. Monday Morning Apocalypse did not get as many good reviews as the other 2 titles, but I like it just as much. Evergrey can be a bit creepy on this album, but they pull it off nicely. All 5 members of this band contribute something special, and the result is a heavy duty consistent sound that includes depth and resonates well with even the most jaded Metal lover. If you only have money for one Evergrey album, make it this one. If you have more money, get all 3 that I mentioned. They are all superb.

4 out of 5 stars Progessive Metal at its best!.......2005-08-30

A band from Sweden that masters progressive metal, they are simply the gods of prog. Not there best record but definetly one prog fans should listen too.

9 Tracks each with a different sound a uniqueness of catchy solos, riffs and structure.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD compilation featuring DIY punk rock and power pop bands.......2005-05-25

A note of trivia, the artwork cover to this CD release features The Nerves, a band who existed from 1974-1977 and recorded the original version of Hanging On The Telephone later covered by Deborah Harry and Blondie. From left to right you can see Jack Lee, Paul Collins (The Beat) and Peter Case (The Plimsouls). This is one of the greatest CD compilations and is packed with more songs than most standard albums would contain. This is one of the few CDs where you can actually find full songs from The Nerves and this will have to suffice until Paul Collins can re-issue The Nerves to CD and vinyl in 2007. This disc features other legendary bands in addition to The Nerves, including Cheap Trick, Fotomaker, Chris Bell (of Big Star), The Scruffs, The Real Kids, Pezband, Chris Stamey, Artful Dodger and The Flashcubes.

5 out of 5 stars Great primer on 70's power pop.......2003-09-19

Rhino records is a godsend to fans looking to learn more about a musical genre. Every genre they tackle is chronicled lovingly and contains a great mix of obscure gems and popular classics. The D.I.Y. series views late 70's punk-styled music in 9 volumes, separated by region and musical style. There are 4 "pop" collections, 2 each for the U.S. and the U.K. The U.S. collections are less stylistically varied but considerably more fun and tuneful, since British pop often goes over my head (see: XTC, for starters, who I am starting to love). This collection covers the "early" years of US power pop, 1975-1978, which means it misses the Raspberries and Big Star but still gets many of the major players. Very highly recommended, snag this while its around!

Best Tracks:
"Shake Some Action" - Stones meets Beatles anthem. One of the Groovies' best and that's saying something, this has a great chorus and some tidy guitar work.
"Wayside" - Big Star acoustics give way to something that's equal parts power pop, hard rock, and pure genius rock and roll.
"Hit The Floor" - More great guitar and a booming mix make this Earth Quake's best original. The most raw and rocking song here, it's a song just waiting to be discovered by bar bands everywhere.
"Can't Wait" - Why are the Piper CD's out of print? Billy Squier's best work was done with this unknown band, and this track is nearly perfect.
"Blow Yourself Up" - Off-kilter drum work and Tommy Hoehn's alternately strong/shaky voice showcase this shoulda-been-a-classic.
"Why Can't It Be" - The Names are one of the totally unknown bands on this compilation and this was a fine single. Wild drumming and very Eric-Carmen vocals, the liner notes slam the production, but it's great for a 70's indie.
"Come Out And Play" - Cheesy? Yes, but this song has such great hooks that it's a worthy power pop song by anyone's standards. Better than today's teen pop by far.

5 out of 5 stars The Second Best Power Pop Collection Ever.......2000-08-01

Bless Rhino's heart for compiling this gem. Flamin' Groovies, Nerves, Artful Dodger...terrific! But the long lost nugget of this CD is Chris Stamey & the dbs' "Summer Sun". Released as an indie single, it was backed with what I deem the most influential indie pop song of the era, "I Thought You Wanted To Know". Reminiscent of Big Star, this little masterpiece is available only on Vol. II of the American Power Pop series, "Shake It Up", which has been sadly deleted from Rhino's catalog. The #1 best power pop collection of all time, "Vol. II" deserves to see the light of day again. I myself would give just about anything to find a copy...can anybody out there help me out?

5 out of 5 stars Hanging on the CD!!.......1999-05-07

Bravo, Rhino!! That is a huge selection of a very funny times for power pop. It is plenty of jewels and gems (please Rhino, we want a Nerves discography re-edition!) like probably one of the best songs ever made: "I am the Cosmos" of the Big Star most unknown half Chris Bell, or the Flamin' Groovies masterpiece "shake some action" from their self named LP...best recomended!!

Album Description

The fifth studio album from Sweden's leading '90s prog rock group, a must for fans of Genesis & Pink Floyd. The band's guitarist, Roine Stolt, is often compared to Jeff Beck, Steve Howe, Carlos Santana and Alan Holdsworth! 143 minutes of music on two discs. 31 tracks. Double slimline jewel case. 1999 release.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Progressive Album.......2007-06-27

Flower Power is a great progressive rock double album. There is a wide variety of tunes with long jams and well written lyrics. It reminds my of the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

4 out of 5 stars The Flower Kings - Get A Bit Overblown On This One.......2007-03-10

Wow, this band certainly is prolific. After releasing a full double album's worth of music in 1997 with "Stardust We Are" the band comes back with another 2 hour plus double album of new music again in 1999. "Flower Power" would showcase the best and worst of what The Flower Kings are all about. There is some absolutely marvelous material to be found here, but there is just so much of it that there is bound to be a certain amount of filler. The band throws everything plus the kitchen sink to the listener and hopes most of it sticks. The whole first disc (sans the last 8 minutes) is comprised of "Garden Of Dreams", an hour long whopper of an epic that harkens back to the days of "Tales From Topographic Oceans" era Yes and other long winded "masterworks". For me "Garden" is all a bit too much. There are bits and pieces that I really love, but it just goes on and on and on, almost it seems, for the sake of being long. There are Flower Kings fans out there that think this is the ultimate FK track, but for me it is just a bit too long winded. Tastes will certainly vary on this one. One thing that really stands out on "Garden" is Hasse Bruniusson's percussion work on the piece. Bruniusson is the former drummer for Samla Mammas Mana and has a very distinct style. Although he has played on previous Flower Kings albums, this is the first time where his presence is really noticed and he does add interesting and innovative percussive flourishes to the piece. The last 8 minutes of the first disc consists of the track "Astral Dog". It is not really apparent why this was tacked on to the end of the big epic, but it is actually a cool little instrumental ditty that sees Roine Stolt plying in a style similar to Joe Satriani or Steve Vai. It is very different from what FK fans may be used to with Stolt, but further showcases his amazing versatility. The second disc is very different from the first comprised of mostly shorter material (although two tracks break the 10 minute barrier), and for the most part a bit more commercial. I enjoy the poppier side of The Flower Kings and tracks like "Stupid Girl", "Psychedelic Postcard", and "Magic Pie" are all cool little tunes. The rest of the tracks are all solid with a mix of instrumental and vocal tracks. Overall this is not one of my favorite Flower Kings albums, but it is still certainly worth owning and I can see where this could be many fans most enjoyable disc, all depending on personal taste.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes very good, sometime amazing.......2007-02-06

Some extract of the Garden of Dreams suite are really impressive musically. some top quality vocals and harmonies with great musical complexity.
This is one of the best cut from the Flower Kings and it is an hour long.
So just for this one, the album worth its price.
The CD number two is good but not as great as the first one, in my opinion. I would say that it is 50% of very good stuff, and 50% to fill the CD. Overall, another great album from the band.

3 out of 5 stars Why can't these guys just be instrumental...or at least write lyrics that don't suck?!?.......2006-10-14

Let's face it. Even the most pedestrian non-discerning listener could find something ridiculous while flipping through the lyric books of any Flower Kings album. On pretty much every disc that Roine and Co. have ever done (including Karmakanic's two, the new Kaipa albums, all three Tangent albums, the lyrics are downright stupid and childish, filled to the brim with rotten cliches, dime-store philosophy, nickel-store theology, not to mention a number of unreadably unusual lines. I hate to rant on this, but they are such well-developed musicians and arrangers that they should just shelf the damn concepts and melodrama and stick to making great music. 'Flower Power' is so hard to enjoy when it's plagued by crapola like 'So you think that I 'has been'/I'd rather say an Evergreen' or 'So wave your little wand now, The Brimstone Blanket.' They should have also done something a little better with the artwork and the title of the album. The subtitle 'A journey to the hidden corners of your mind' reeks of mindless pretension and makes the album seem like a complete joke before you've even heard it. I agree with another reviewer that the Flower Kings are very similar to writers like Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind, whose ability to write well is diluted miserably by their adherence to the genre they're trapped in. This is seen with the Flower Kings in their apparant obsession with carrying other musical torches (be it Yes, Genesis, Zappa). The presentation is there, but the enjoyment takes an awful lot of perseverance on the listener's part.
Overall, like all of their other discs, the music is really well done and well-recorded. This album would just be a lot better without the vocals period.

2 out of 5 stars Pop Prog.......2006-02-16

Lots of high end prog rock musicainship for sure but if "Flower Power" is a typical Flower Kings album ( this is the only one I've heard) then I have to say the guys lack good taste. Although the album contains many soulful and uplifting moments, the overall effect is undermined by insipid lyrics and musical cliches gleaned from the worst of 70's pop. I was hoping for a comparison with classic Yes but this is more like Styx or late Kansas.

The lead vocals sounds too run of the mill for my taste and would be better suited to an Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera.

I love TOP...but I don't love this CD. "Diggin' on James Brown" is an awesome song. But it's really the only good song on this CD. "Souled Out" is alright. But the rest of the songs aren't so good. I bought this CD and was disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD and Dance to it!.......2000-07-23

Musical purity is just wonderful for those who are into that. There is only one question that really matters: does it make you want to tap your foot, to dance? Does this music make you FEEL something? YES!!

This is their best in a long time. It has a lot of the fun they deliver in a live concert. Glad to have you back guys! They are a great feel-good band with a lot of soul.

2 out of 5 stars Souled out-Sold out.......2000-02-06

I would definately not rate this among one of T.O.P.'s towering accomplishments. The flavor of this CD seems to be slightly cheezy yet bland. Unfortunately it sounds like they have main streamed thier sound alot more, and have traded in some of thier funkier grooves for a more "commercial" and user friendly sound. Perhaps the most dissapointing aspect is the weakness of the Horn section. They have definately taken a blow from the personnel change in the trumpet section. The lines are not as tasty or arranged quite as well as they were under Greg Adams hands, and the lead trumpet sound is not as solid as it once was. In addition, I feel that the drummer was a poor choice for T.O.P. He playing is strait sounding and the electronic effects on his set gives the whole group a commercial 80's sound. Sorry, TOP I've been a fan for years, but this CD is a let down in the music selection and style. Hats off though to Rocco and "The Doc" for thier always stellar performances.

5 out of 5 stars My fave of all TOP recordings.......1998-12-26

I am a long time (20 plus years) fan of Tower. I saw the original band (Lenny Williams, Brent Byers, Mic Gillette etc.) when I was in High School. I stopped listening after a few bad records like "Power" and the strange disco stuff. My copy of "Souled Out" would be worn out if were not digital! The new blood in the band keeps them fresh with ideas and a new interpretation of the Tower feel and trademark sound. I saw the band last year on the BB King tour and they were as tight as ever. My only question is: "Why is the lifespan of the Lead singers so short?"

5 out of 5 stars Too young to wish for the old days.......1998-11-19

Hey, I've listened to all their CD's too and this one might just be the best. I'm looking from a different perspective, being a younger fan (18), and I think this CD's right up there with the old stuff. In fact, I like it a lot better than what some people are calling the "return to the TOP sound" recording, "Rhythm and Business."

4 out of 5 stars Gamma Ray delivers again.......2007-01-15

It can't have been easy for Gamma Ray to follow up their epic 1995 album Land of the Free, but with 1997's Somewhere Out in Space, the band delivered another dose of high quality power metal.

Somewhere Out in Space might not be as majestic as Land of the Free, but it's not that far behind it either. This is a very good power metal album, and definitely has that epic and melodic sound that Kai Hansen practically invented. The whole album is solid, but there are some standout tracks. The title track is a high-speed metal anthem worthy of Helloween, Valley of the Kings and Lost in the Future are epics song despite their relatively short length, Watcher in the Sky could have come from Judas Priest's Painkiller album, and Shine On is a majestic anthem. Future Freedom Call drummer Dan Zimmermann was on board for this album, and you can definitely hear elements of what would become the Freedom Call sound here.

Gamma Ray would continue their series of excellent albums with 1999's Power Plant.

I suppose it goes without saying that Gamma Ray would appeal to Helloween fans. Fans of the more recent power metal bands like Sonata Arctica, Freedom Call, Edguy and Hammerfall also owe it to themselves to check out Gamma Ray, and Somewhere Out in Space is a great album to start with.

The 2003 reissue of Somewhere Out in Space features digitally remastered sound, three bonus tracks (Miracle, a cover of Uriah Heep's Return to Fantasy, and the cover of Judas Priest's Victim of Changes, which originally appeared on the Valley of the Kings EP), and comes in a nice digipack. It's a great way to improve a classic album.

NOTE: If you can find one, there is a very cool (but very limited) box set that collects all six of the remastered Gamma Ray albums.
