Out-of-State Plates is the byproduct of nearly a decade of Fountains of Wayne's stellar power-pop pursuits. The 28 performances (two other tracks are brief, snarky radio excerpts) culled together on this double-disc anthology may represent demos and previously unreleased leftovers from the band's three albums, but their consistent quality belies any notion of the extraneous. Also spotlighted are two new performances: the rollicking rush "Maureen" and the infectious, pop-souful "The Girl I Can't Forget." An eclectic slate of covers ranges from wistful takes on Jackson Browne's "These Days" and ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head" to a spry, countrified version of Gene Pitney's "Today's Teardrops" and their delicious, barely tongue-in-cheek cult-fave version of Britney Spears's "...Baby One More Time." Another delight is "California Sex Lawyer," while the mirthful "I Want an Alien for Christmas" and "The Man in the Santa Suit" offer up some welcome holiday cheer. The package also includes a track-by-track commentary by band mainstays Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description
Michael Harris and manager John Purdom had the collective vision of a progressive rock band some years ago. Through an ad on the internet, Michael teamed up with Ted Leonard, the great vocalist of the US band Enchant. After Michael and Ted spent quite some time crafting and demoing the material, they then united with the rhythm section of Haji's Kitchen and Outworld keyboardist Bobby Williamson to form Thought Chamber and record their debut album Angular Perceptions, an album full of catchy melodies and outstanding musicianship.Customer Reviews:
Somewhat unique sound for right now.......2007-07-23
As good as the album is, I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I sense they have an even better album ahead of them if they put in the work. I only hope they keep all their "side projects" where they belong (on the side) and keep focus on a potentially great band.
Tired of endlessly waiting for a new Kansas release??!?.......2007-07-11
Interesting combination.......2007-06-30
This proves that there is still inventivenes.I feel that Enchant should have been going towards this field. There are elements of fusion, metal, prog and power metal all together.

Album Description
These four girls from Brighton, England recorded a monster rock album that pummels and soothes all at once. Previous releases include a full-length, "Rock It To The Moon", and three singles on their own label, Let's Rock Records. They also released singles on Skint sub-label, Indenial, and on the hip UK indie, Fierce Panda. This is their second album and first full-length for Too Pure.Customer Reviews:
this album does "make me weak at the knees"...........2007-06-30
i don't feel that i could more adequately describe their tracks as the very able reviewers below me, but i can say that this is the most hidden jewel of all experimental-indie bands out there. almost every song evokes a very strong emotional response from within, and i have to say, if you're a person who loves being solitary and lean more towards the creative, i'd recommend this album whole-heartedly. it's an anthem album for the melancholy, but secure in their aloneness.

where is this studio located? The studio they recorded the album in...
In an apartment house with very thin walls? angry old people living next door? It seems like it. Otherwise i could not understand these girls. It seems like they cannot afford to play like they would like to play. That they have to be restrained, do their thing quietly, cautiously not to aggravate their nighbours. Or maybe there is a little baby next door, trying to go to sleep and girls of course are well-natured and do not want to disturb.
Or maybe they just had really bad hang-overs from the party last night while recording it.
TAKE THAT BIT BETWEEN YOUR TEETH and THIS DEED would surely rock a lot if they just turned the guitars louder a bit! BIRDS would rip your heart out, if they just managed to put a bit more soul in it! The instrumental YOU MAKE ME WEAK AT THE KNEES would make JIM O'ROURKE jealous, if they just managed to make it sound a bit more sincere. would would would.
I like indie-rock. And i want to be hip and listen to new cool things (like all of us, right). And i wanted to give this album five stars, but just couldn't. Sorry. It has content, but it is brought to us just too poorly. No wonder people like their live performances. Because concerts are usually held in a place, they don't have angry music-haters-neighbours next door. Right? For one track these girls even call the old tired neighbours in and recorded a song together with them (THE VALLEYS).
THE POWER went OUT and never came back?
"Power" shines and dims.......2004-06-30
The steady "Gone Under Sea" starts the album on a slightly dull note, before expanding out into the poppy "On Parade," the charming drum-led "Birds," the bass-laden country-rocker "Take The Bit Between Your Teeth," bass-keyboard "This Deed," and the gentle ballad "Oh Sombra." It finishes up on a quirky note with the drums'n'keyboard "You Make Me Weak At The Knees."
Electrelane has a pretty good thing going in "The Power Out," even if it never quite takes off -- they do a good job, but it lacks cohesion and enthusiasm. What they lack in fire, they at least make up in versatility -- they mix in some French, German and Spanish songs, taken from the writings of Nietzsche and a sonnet by Juan Boscon.
Probably the best thing about "The Power Out" is the keyboards. Verity Susman manages the sound of an organ in "Love Builds Up," before switching to a sweeping piano solo at the end of the album. Emma Gaze's drums get to both serve as the backdrop and the front instrumentation, while Rachel Dalley and Mia Clarke do some solid background work on, respectively, the bass and guitar.
Susman's vocals are a bit slurred and bland, and often they get buried under the music so you can't tell what she's saying. Of course, given some of the lyrics, that might be a good thing -- typical pop sensibilities, except the writing is blander. "I want to see you/More than anything/Babe I miss you/All day and everyday " is one typical example. Not to mention the vaguely icky "I bet I'd like your underwear" chorus.
Despite the weird, ultra-simplistic lyrics and a few musical duds, "The Power Out" is a pleasany sample of British indie-rock, with plenty of variety and a few artier flourishes. An interesting if flawed listen.

A "Must Have" for anyone into Progressive Metal.......2007-04-29
Some excellent, memorable ideas for metal amongst less inspiring fare.......2007-04-21
Well put together progressive metal release gets by on impressive arrangements and instrumentation but not without detractions. Bogged down in the 80's-licious, over-gruffed machismo of the singer, some of the ambitious yet still repetitive writing veers more towards pretentious when coupled with this broadway-like quality the album provides. Sometimes the awkwardly languished theatrics teeter out in an unarticulated haze of overreaching, but more often Evergrey dazzles by helping to take the genre into uncharted terrain, equally comfortable at mixing Therion, Dream Theater, and Andrew Lloyd Weber type dynamics in one song. At best, a fantastic, urgent, and dynamic melodic pulse, complimented by the skilled keyboarding throughout, makes beautiful, romantic, mature heavy rock feel as though at times it should appeal to your parents instead. If one is in the young, pseudo-self-consciously-hip phase of musical development perhaps these stabs at an operatic metal will not sit well, but anyone smart enough to process the few noticeable songs for what they try to be on their own will be privy to a few fantastic highlights in the rarely covered, classier side of this genre.
Evergrey's best..........2007-01-19
As others have written, this is about a man trying to readjust to life after an alien abduction. The lyrics are effective, and the music is dynamic and powerful. Evergrey, like a lot of prog-metal bands, utilizes a cheesy synth from time to time, but it really works on this album, with the sci-fi spacey theme. They are also further back in the mix than on other efforts, and the result is terrific atmosphere over a powerful, though musically limited band. Eglund's vocals are perfect (and not upper-register whining) here.
Evergrey's not really a 5-star band, but this is a 5-star album. Recreation Day is pretty darn good too. Other efforts are solid but not exceptional. Get this one.

Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

Excellent CD compilation featuring DIY punk rock and power pop bands.......2005-05-25
Great primer on 70's power pop.......2003-09-19
Best Tracks:
"Shake Some Action" - Stones meets Beatles anthem. One of the Groovies' best and that's saying something, this has a great chorus and some tidy guitar work.
"Wayside" - Big Star acoustics give way to something that's equal parts power pop, hard rock, and pure genius rock and roll.
"Hit The Floor" - More great guitar and a booming mix make this Earth Quake's best original. The most raw and rocking song here, it's a song just waiting to be discovered by bar bands everywhere.
"Can't Wait" - Why are the Piper CD's out of print? Billy Squier's best work was done with this unknown band, and this track is nearly perfect.
"Blow Yourself Up" - Off-kilter drum work and Tommy Hoehn's alternately strong/shaky voice showcase this shoulda-been-a-classic.
"Why Can't It Be" - The Names are one of the totally unknown bands on this compilation and this was a fine single. Wild drumming and very Eric-Carmen vocals, the liner notes slam the production, but it's great for a 70's indie.
"Come Out And Play" - Cheesy? Yes, but this song has such great hooks that it's a worthy power pop song by anyone's standards. Better than today's teen pop by far.

Album Description
The fifth studio album from Sweden's leading '90s prog rock group, a must for fans of Genesis & Pink Floyd. The band's guitarist, Roine Stolt, is often compared to Jeff Beck, Steve Howe, Carlos Santana and Alan Holdsworth! 143 minutes of music on two discs. 31 tracks. Double slimline jewel case. 1999 release.Customer Reviews:

The Flower Kings - Get A Bit Overblown On This One.......2007-03-10
Wow, this band certainly is prolific. After releasing a full double album's worth of music in 1997 with "Stardust We Are" the band comes back with another 2 hour plus double album of new music again in 1999. "Flower Power" would showcase the best and worst of what The Flower Kings are all about. There is some absolutely marvelous material to be found here, but there is just so much of it that there is bound to be a certain amount of filler. The band throws everything plus the kitchen sink to the listener and hopes most of it sticks. The whole first disc (sans the last 8 minutes) is comprised of "Garden Of Dreams", an hour long whopper of an epic that harkens back to the days of "Tales From Topographic Oceans" era Yes and other long winded "masterworks". For me "Garden" is all a bit too much. There are bits and pieces that I really love, but it just goes on and on and on, almost it seems, for the sake of being long. There are Flower Kings fans out there that think this is the ultimate FK track, but for me it is just a bit too long winded. Tastes will certainly vary on this one. One thing that really stands out on "Garden" is Hasse Bruniusson's percussion work on the piece. Bruniusson is the former drummer for Samla Mammas Mana and has a very distinct style. Although he has played on previous Flower Kings albums, this is the first time where his presence is really noticed and he does add interesting and innovative percussive flourishes to the piece. The last 8 minutes of the first disc consists of the track "Astral Dog". It is not really apparent why this was tacked on to the end of the big epic, but it is actually a cool little instrumental ditty that sees Roine Stolt plying in a style similar to Joe Satriani or Steve Vai. It is very different from what FK fans may be used to with Stolt, but further showcases his amazing versatility. The second disc is very different from the first comprised of mostly shorter material (although two tracks break the 10 minute barrier), and for the most part a bit more commercial. I enjoy the poppier side of The Flower Kings and tracks like "Stupid Girl", "Psychedelic Postcard", and "Magic Pie" are all cool little tunes. The rest of the tracks are all solid with a mix of instrumental and vocal tracks. Overall this is not one of my favorite Flower Kings albums, but it is still certainly worth owning and I can see where this could be many fans most enjoyable disc, all depending on personal taste.
Sometimes very good, sometime amazing.......2007-02-06
This is one of the best cut from the Flower Kings and it is an hour long.
So just for this one, the album worth its price.
The CD number two is good but not as great as the first one, in my opinion. I would say that it is 50% of very good stuff, and 50% to fill the CD. Overall, another great album from the band.
Why can't these guys just be instrumental...or at least write lyrics that don't suck?!?.......2006-10-14
Overall, like all of their other discs, the music is really well done and well-recorded. This album would just be a lot better without the vocals period.
Pop Prog.......2006-02-16
The lead vocals sounds too run of the mill for my taste and would be better suited to an Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera.

Gamma Ray delivers again.......2007-01-15
Somewhere Out in Space might not be as majestic as Land of the Free, but it's not that far behind it either. This is a very good power metal album, and definitely has that epic and melodic sound that Kai Hansen practically invented. The whole album is solid, but there are some standout tracks. The title track is a high-speed metal anthem worthy of Helloween, Valley of the Kings and Lost in the Future are epics song despite their relatively short length, Watcher in the Sky could have come from Judas Priest's Painkiller album, and Shine On is a majestic anthem. Future Freedom Call drummer Dan Zimmermann was on board for this album, and you can definitely hear elements of what would become the Freedom Call sound here.
Gamma Ray would continue their series of excellent albums with 1999's Power Plant.
I suppose it goes without saying that Gamma Ray would appeal to Helloween fans. Fans of the more recent power metal bands like Sonata Arctica, Freedom Call, Edguy and Hammerfall also owe it to themselves to check out Gamma Ray, and Somewhere Out in Space is a great album to start with.
The 2003 reissue of Somewhere Out in Space features digitally remastered sound, three bonus tracks (Miracle, a cover of Uriah Heep's Return to Fantasy, and the cover of Judas Priest's Victim of Changes, which originally appeared on the Valley of the Kings EP), and comes in a nice digipack. It's a great way to improve a classic album.
NOTE: If you can find one, there is a very cool (but very limited) box set that collects all six of the remastered Gamma Ray albums.
