Her given name is Emma Louise, but when Ms. Niblett dons her blonde wig and steps into the recording booth--or onto the stage--she becomes Scout. On Kidnapped by Neptune, the Nottingham native combines the single-minded intensity of Cat Power with the spirited sweetness of the Breeders. The end result is raw, ragged, exposed. As with 2003's I Am, her third full-length was recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini, who's worked with kindred spirits like PJ Harvey and Nina Nastasia. So what sets Scout apart from these other singer/songwriters? Well, there's a greater emphasis on the beat (and she often bangs the kick drum herself). Then there's the way she can turn on a dime from a whisper to a scream ("Lullaby for Scout in 10 Years") or split in two through the magic of double-tracking ("F**ck Treasure Island"). Kidnapped by Neptune is indie-pop reinvented as bare-boned blues. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description
This is her first US release for Too Pure, following 2003's Steve Albini-recorded "I Am". She's "a reincarnation of a Louisiana bayou blues songstress, reborn to tell her tales of love and desire"--Pitchfork. "This is the sound of an angry, explosive anti-waif with a back catalogue full of the wonder of heartache and the magic of loss. That and a heck of a chip on her guitar"--Austin Chronicle. Look for her on tour with Electrelane in June.

5 out of 5 stars Lo-Fi Passion & Delight.......2007-04-24

Every review of Scout Niblett inevitably leads to Cat Power or PJ Harvey, but I don't think such comparisons are adequate. Sure, her albums exhibit the raw, scratchy female vocals of the aforementioned, but the compositions as a whole are more akin to the likes of Big Black, The Melvins, or Fantômas: choppy, stripped, unconventional, and perhaps a tad pretentious.

What I find most refreshing is her utter departure from the obligatory verse-chorus-verse song architecture. The songs in "Kidnapped From Neptune" and its predecessor I Am jump in and out of emphasis, switching beats and directions as they please without the burden of a formal structure. As such her lyrics are free to behave appropriately for the mood she wishes to establish and as a bonus, she's in complete control over the energy of each and every moment.

But musical anarchy isn't for everyone. If you prefer something more predictable but still want to give her a shot, try her debut, Sweet Heart Fever. While it is still a standout album, it wasn't engineered by Steve Albini and as a result it is a bit more commonly structured and marketable. :)

2 out of 5 stars Neptune, you can keep her.......2006-09-20

This album bored me to tears. The lyrics are bland and generic. The composition is dreary and tedious. I don't understand the allure of this band. It isn't fresh, interesting, or even well made. It's the sound of a poorly trained indie band without character and I'm almost mad I spent money on it.

3 out of 5 stars does not mock or attempt to sound like any other bands out there?.......2006-04-03

c'mon guys! this stuff balances on the edge of a joke and screwing around. is everyone afraid to say this stuff isn't very good? scout sounds like cat power and bjork, two women with REAL talent not borrowed vocal stylizing.
listen - i like open recordings where theres just drums, guitar, and voice -or- uke and voice -or- piano and voice whatever. i'm just saying this is nothing new or exciting or groundbreaking. emma (is that her real name?) probably heard bjork and then cat power or holly golightly or souixie sue (i know the spellings wrong, sorry)and decided she liked this style and then copied it.
yes i know everybody does that but please don't tell me this is great or new or important.
having said all that - i like it. not love it, just like it. it's worth a few listens.

5 out of 5 stars These people are silly and this is a fabulous album. sly album........2006-02-04

sly sly sly. these people lie. this is a sly album. !These people are nuts. ! This is her best album. It flows perfectly and the lyrics are somewhat whimsical and I like them all. The instrumentation is really amazing and unique (who cares if she doesn't use a ukulele). Her voice is really unique and everything fits really well. The changes in the song are really interesting. And anyway I am writing this review to say " what are these people giving it 2-3 stars talking abotu". I have listened to this album over and over and over and over ever since i got it. I don't understand how someone could say she sounds that much like Bjork, she really doesn't, not even when she was in sugarcubes and such... Scout is raw cold tender unpretentious uniqueness and she stands on her own. she doesn't need you to appreciate her. you can tell she is pleased. kidnapped by neptune is a fun song. it has a certain feeling that can go different places but definitely has a certain simple feel. fun or thought provoking. it grows and grows. drums speak. early 90s drum. fun lyrics. sing it with a friend in a car watching the roads drive by you. you'll like it best this way. anyone have any recomendations or comments comment on me. this city. chase paper. nice instrumentation somewhat sly and different feeling from the rest but somehow shares it all. nice song order. wolfie. leaves you wanting to listen to it again or at least your favorite songs. give it a chance.

A month ago I saw Scout Niblett play live, expecting to see some whiny girl with a guitar. Much to my surprise she totally blew me away. She is a really sexy small girl with an amazing voice and she rocks out on guitar while the drummer pounds away madly. Her lyrics are sweet and comforting. Listen to this album, and go see them play! NOW!
