5 out of 5 stars The good ole' stuff........2007-04-03

Goldfinger sure has changed over the years. They're no longer ska...infact they're quite the opposite. Their new material leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion and I've since lost interest in the band.

This a great album, bringing us back a decade ago into the world of ska-punk and all its charm. Funny enough, the album was very much a studio assembled piece of work. Although the core 4 members were a band already, there's a ton of cameos on the CD, including Scott and Dan from Reel Big Fish on horns, and Angelo Moore from Fishbone on saxaphone and backup vocals. This obviously to satisfy the at-the-time popularity of ska. Regardless, the result is great and very much missed among Goldfinger's new material.

The CD itself is a great mix of ska, punk, rock, and a fusion of all three. The album's most recognized track 'Superman', made famous by Tony Hawk Pro Skater, kicks the album off just right. Fast, catchy, and with plenty of horns. My personal favorite is 'Carlita'. It's an amazing ska rooted song, with just enough rock thrown in to get you through and wet your appetite. Angelo Moore's backups take it to the next level, and his sax solo's are simply amazing.

This is by far Goldfinger's best work, and it's a shame we won't hear anything like it from them anytime soon.

I love this album. There are a lot of good songs on it and there's quite a bit of variety on this. Some songs are fun, some are relaxing, and some are great to listen to when you're mad! Congrats on a great album, Goldfinger.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-10-23

This is a classic 90s ska album. It's just perfect to sing along with. After this, Goldfinger just went downhill. There are a few songs today that are good, but most of them suck. Why did you get rid of the horns John? Whyyyyyyyyyyyy??????

5 out of 5 stars this is talent.......2005-05-27

This is my favoriot CD. This was before the band got caught up in bad lyrics and peta.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2004-12-16

This CD gives me some serious nostalgia, because the first track, "Superman", was featured on the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the N64 and PS1. It's a real throwback for me, and for the rest of you people who recognize it. As for the rest of the tracks, this album is quite listenable. I still don't get why the last track is 36 minutes long when only 8 minutes of it is really used for music. Stupid. But anyway, if you're just looking for some good punk, then get it.

these guys really are for the faint of heart! they have a gentle touch and haunting, bittersweet hooks even when they fully engage their distortion pedals. these guys aren't cheesy, nor are they particularly greasy, but they're worth a f**k

3 out of 5 stars Not Great..........2002-04-24

First off, let me just say that I am a big fan of this genre of music. I love beautiful pop melodies -- even at the expense of substance. But this album is just too light and fluffy... and not in a good way. The musicianship is second-rate, the song writing uninspired and the production is flat. I can't listen to it without cringing. They have the right idea, and I hope they keep it up, but they need to make a HUGE leap forward. There are much better choices out there: Beulah, Jimmy Eat World, Guster, Pete Yorn. Your $$ are much better spent elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars well crafted pop songs.......2001-12-22

I owned Second Story by the Hang Ups, and thought it
was a very nice pop album. I finally came across So
We Go. This is even better. These guys play pop song
that are well written and include nice harmonies.
I highly recommend this CD if you are a fan of pop
music.

2 out of 5 stars What ever happened to the Cyrkle?.......2001-06-03

Answer: they've been reincarnated as the Hang Ups. The same whispy hamonies, the same insipid lyrics. Maybe they got better with later albums, but this one is OVER RATED!

P.S. For those of you who don't know who the Cyrkle -- they were two whimps who put out a third rate Paul Simon song called "Red Rubber Ball."

4 out of 5 stars dreamy or wimpy . . . it's a taste thing.......2001-05-01

The writers who classify the Hang-Ups with the other folksy yet atmospheric, what my friend calls "strum-a-lumma" style bands that populated the Sarah Records catalog have nailed it right on. Nothing wrong with that style, of course; basically, it boils down to taste. What adds interest for me is that these guys hail not from somewhere in a rainier part of the U.K., but from Minneapolis, home of the Huskers, Replacements, and Soul Asylum. I call it the Ocean Blue effect; for me, that's gotta score points on some level out there.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2001-03-12

I bravely declare this my favorite recording of the 1990s. Its a treasure of simple, well-written pop songs, gorgeous harmonizing, dreamy introspection, and wonderful guitar atmospherics by John Crozier. Goosebump City from start to finish.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Recording Compilation!.......2006-05-31

These recordings show the TRUE essence of the late incomparable Dr. Mattie Moss Clark!

The recordings contain a stirring selection of songs to motivate the lowest of souls, they were recorded during an era of struggle, but when you listen to these songs you'll be lifted out of your every burden. They were composed by various writers including Mattie's very own daughter..the Queen of the Hammond B-3 Organ.. Twinkie Clark.

Im telling you there are songs on these cds that made me and still makes me wonder if they were just written and recorded in a modern church setting, due to the fact that they were well ahead of their time, as far as beat and rythm..

The title song That's Christ (cd 1) has has a catchy chorus line that is guaranteed to make you bump your head and look to outsiders as if you're listening to a secular album, all along, her music was and still is never straying or swaying from the affirmation that she's in the gospel music arena solely for the purpose to spread and reach the multitudes, not only that, but letting god know that she is thankful for all he has bestowed upon her being. Her music is the replica of what she lived, who she was, and what we as up and comming gospel artists should have our music to replicate as they all contained that traditional church-like setting in which Mattie was known to encamp.

This is a MUST HAVE for any true Mattie Moss Clark ministry followers.. I admonish you to go get it, go get it, go get it.

4 out of 5 stars A very good hang up to have.......2004-12-30

Not too bad, great mellow pop songs. The song Caroline could almost get them 4 stars by itself, Long Goodbye, Maroon, and Blue Sky sound like cool 60s Simon and Garfunkel pop songs. I love this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Not up to expectations.......2001-03-12

I was a little disappointed at this effort. So We Go was one of my all-time faves. I should have known they couldnt repeat it without the guitar playing of John Crozier. Second Story is more folky sounding, lacking the lovely, fuzzy distortion atmospherics and understated production quality of So We Go. Still, this is tasty pop confection served with a few tangy twists. Absolutely worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars wimpy but pretty.......2001-01-03

the idea that people would compare the hang ups to the Kinks is flat out preposterous--that's not saying the Minneapolis popsters don't have merit, however. far better to compare them to a lot of very wimpy Sarah Records outfits from the 80s--nor is that a bad thing. its just that there are a number of bands out there that do this kind of pop stuff with more teeth and daring: PAPAS FRITAS, THE BLACK WATCH, IVY, AND SUGARPLASTIC. still, "the Queen" is an undeniably great great song, one you can play over and over again. the rest of the record is very very wimpy, but pretty. i used to love the hang ups when they were fuzzier and dirtier (their cover of the Byrds "Eight Miles High" on another release is really worth searching out). just wish they'd get their distortion pedals from the pawn shops!!

3 out of 5 stars Work in progress ?.......2000-07-13

I found a couple of worthy cuts but the remainder sounds like a 1st cut demo with the tape speed turned down. Annoying!

5 out of 5 stars Another incredible album from The Hang Ups.......2000-04-20

With the departure of John Crozier and a new bass player added to the mix (Aaron Lundholm) it only makes sense that the sound of the band would change. While maintaining the sweet meloncholy pop that made them cult gods they've turned themselves into a Kinks(ish) Pop/Rock band... The melodies are even more catchy than ever and the harmonies are sublime (thanks to Mr. Ittner in the studio)... Excellent album.
