"Every once in awhile, something's got to break to give," Abra Moore forewarns in the opening track amid a heavenly, uplifting, gorgeously melodic declaration of love. The line foreshadows what awaits on Everything Changed, the most emotionally arresting account of a relationship's rise and fall since Matthew Sweet's 1991 masterwork Girlfriend. Along the way are several irresistibly buoyant should-be pop smashes--"I Do," "Big Sky," and "Shining Star" could all scale the charts--balanced against the more measured melodic grace of "If You Want Me To" and "Taking Chances." The deepest cuts, though, are the straight-shooting piano ballads including the title track and "Family Affair," in which Moore cries out, "Don't take away the one love that matters," her voice quaking with unmistakable heartbreak. --Peter Blackstock

Hit & Miss with the music, but just look at her. How can you not give her 4 stars?

5 out of 5 stars It's Time to Fly.......2006-01-13

I sat under headphones for this one, while working on another project, and I am surprised by the number of times I stopped what I was doing, just to sit back, "[rock] my head," and really listen... and then go back to work without skipping a beat.

Really raw (on track 9, the sound of Abra clearing her throat is audible), this is a refreshingly simple and endearing work: mostly positive, often acoustic, and it sounds to me like either the most songs were recorded "live" in the studio or, the tracks were done in one fell swoop - no overdubbing, no vocal track on its own - you can hear in Abra's breath that she's strumming her guitar.

I first heard Abra Moore solo on the KGSR Broadcast Volume 5 back in '97, and found her quirky vocal sound to fit in quite nicely with her music, a natural and comfortable progression from Poi Dog Pondering. After subsequent appearances on Broadcasts CDs, I finally bought this CD and was delighted that her recorded stints are much like those beautiful, live tracks.

The non-acoustic songs are dreamy and engagingly rhythmic, if slightly louder. Complex and distinct layers swirl around, pulling you in to sing along with the chorus, when you realize it's a disco beat you're tapping to. "Big Sky" evoked thoughts of the Breeders' "Last Splash" album.

For those who've never heard Abra Moore, the artist (at least on this album) could be described as a Cocteau Twins-sounding Edie Brickell with less story-telling and more introspection. And more dynamism.

Mixed almost perfectly, the tracks on "Everything's Changed" are crisp and fresh. Horns, keyboards, marching-band drum, strumming acoustic guitar, and piano balanced throughout the opening track, "I do," - a beautiful declaration of love not, as the title would suggest, about a wedding or marriage; rather a plea for someone who most needs lifting to see, that, while it may not seem like anyone cares, "I do." You can just feel that sigh of relief.

4 out of 5 stars Strong return from Abra.......2005-03-09

One of popular music's best kept secrets, Abra Moore is a singer/songwriter whose formidable talent still outweighs her moderate level of success 10 years on from her brilliant solo debut 'Sing'.

Judging by her new album 'Everything Changed' she's been through alot in the intervening years, both personally and professionally, with lyrics touching on love, loss and the breakdown of relationships. Far from being depressing though, 'Everything Changed' is ultimately beautiful and uplifting.

Once again with Abra it all just clicks for me, her delicate voice and turn of phrase seem to slip past my defences with consumate ease. This collection runs the gamut of emotions from 'Big Sky's' blissful optimism to 'The Ends' heartache and despair. Along the way she gracefully deals with the death of her father in 'Paint On Your Wings' and 'Family Affair' while engaging the listener with poignant, bittersweet lyrics and melodies, such as those in the hypnotic 'Melancholy Love' or stormy 'I Win'.

Truly, this is a landmark album, not only for Abra but for popular music as a whole. Very few artists reach the heights of beauty, intensity and honesty that Abra has here.

An aside: I'd urge anyone that has enjoyed 'Everything Changed' to seek out her debut 'Sing' - it's the purest distillation of Abra's talent and stacked with great songs. Also, for a similar feel as Abra, try Gemma Hayes' 'Night On My Side' or Jane Siberry's 'When I Was A Boy', both are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Given Love, Given Love.......2004-09-22

I'm ashamed to say, yet happy that it happened, that I discovered Abra Moore on the Cruel Intentions soundtrack and didn't think much of her. It took 5 years while owning that soundtrack to give in and see if she had any other works. And, to my luck and surprise, she had just released this cd (in addition to her former cd). I jumped at the purchase, and am in love with Abra Moore.

Abra's voice is one of the most unique I've heard. And with me, it satisfies. And what satisfies even more is to know she wrote 99% of every lyric you hear.

I would go through and review each and every song, but I'll save the space and just say each song is equal in likeness, although different in tone and feeling. Falling in love? Listen. Scared of falling in love? Listen. Falling out of love? Listen. Want to fall in love? Listen. Experiencing anything to do with love? Abra Moore is here to make you feel better about it and yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Changed For The Better!.......2004-07-17

I love this album with a passion that one would have for its favorite pillow or piece of jewelry. Its a precious work of art and I think it was beautifully crafted and perfected to be something very emotional grasping and captivating towards the listener. The highlights of this album are "Pull Away", "Paint On Your Wings", "No Fear", and "Family Affair". Her voice itself is so versatile going from easy flowing pop-synch vocals to a heavier huskier, more powerful romp (as on the beautiful Family Affair). There are no more words to describe this albums beauty.

    4 out of 5 stars Amazing....just amazing.... (4.5 Stars actually).......2005-03-21

For a man to go from an instrumental hip hop album to this, which is quite the opposite, and do them both almost perfectly is very interesting. While Wale's project as Science Fiction received a lot of critical acclaim for his amazing musical collages this album here is just Wale performing everything. All the instruments & vocals were done by him except on the few tracks with verses from some amazing emcees. Wale is from Nigeria and you get that African feel on a most of these tracks, whether it is from his voice or from his drum patterns that he creates. The intro track is amazing even if it is not even 2 minutes long. That is a problem on a lot of this album the songs you want to be longer are incredibly short. Wale is singing on this album and his voice is very interesting. Unlike a lot of singers today he actually has a voice that he can use as an instrument which proves to be very nice. His lyrics range from politics to love to life and they are all backed by some amazing sounds. The three emcees he recruits are perfect for this project and while they dominate the tracks they are on they do not take away from the whole Wale Oyejide experience throughout the album. If you looking for some smooth mellow music to have in the background or if you in just one of those odd moods put this in your deck, it is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and make you problems disappear (at least for the duration of the album).

    5 out of 5 stars Science Fact.......2004-09-21

As far as I know, this is Wale Oyejide's second major release---coming after Walls Don't Exist under Wale's "Science Fiction" alias. It's easy to identify One Day Everything Changed as the work of the same artist, but enough differences are in place to make one understand why he chose to release it under a different name.

Walls Don't Exist had a lot of vocals on it, but still gets talked about as an instrumental release. That might not be too unreasonable; the vocals could be pretty subtle at times. At one point in the liner notes, Wale Oyejide even challenged the listener to try and figure out what he was saying in a particular song.

One Day Everything Changed doesn't make any such challenges; the vocal parts are put into the forefront, making for a more confident sounding album. Guest MCs like Doom and Jay Dilla work really well with his production, though the result is a sound I'm not sure I've encountered before (that last thought applies to about all of Oyejide's work). Oyejide's Nigerian roots have their place alongside the American hip-hop he seems to have grown up listening to. The lyrical material covers a wider array of topics, from politics to relationships, and the music seems a lot more focused; less meandering is going on. Not that the "meandering" was bad, I liked Walls Don't Exist a lot, but where that album seemed more like a collection of separate tracks he had made, this one's a little more unified.

His sound has noticeably developed---instead of mood for the sake of mood, here mood is used to evoke more clearly expressed ideas and emotions. All together, you get a better picture of the artist making the music. Wale's traditional hip-hop influences are also a lot closer to the surface, though I don't want to suggest that this isn't a little progressive by traditional hip-hop standards. Wale spends most of his time singing, so if you're not down with that, you might want to listen to some samples before you buy (although I got to say that would be a ridiculous reason not to like it).

I've been enjoying this record a lot. If he keeps trying, this guy is going to keep getting better, and if things work like they are supposed to you'll be hearing a lot more about him as time goes on. Even if it doesn't end up being your thing, you've got to admit there's something there.

5 out of 5 stars This guy just simply gets it!.......2004-08-18

Wale has done it again with a mix of afrocentric and contemporary sounds. This cd is a must have. Check it out.

              5 out of 5 stars A genius........2005-04-20

Lightsey is a genius--boppish and behind the beat at the same time. He's an unknown genius, but a genius all the same. If you like horizontal playing, long flowing lines, and the sense that there's always another beautful chorus over the horizon, this is your man.

              5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2001-09-27

For me, a CD often has more value than merely the sounds it contains. This CD, which I discovered when I was first getting into the wonders of creative improvised music, has a certain hold on me that goes beyond simple nostalgia.

Part of it is that it's a great CD. Period. Besides the beautiful lyricism of perhaps Lightsey's most successful date (excepting, perhaps, some of his sides with The Leaders), it has on bass a young Santi DeBriano, probably just off the boat from Panama, and the incomparable Jerry Gonzales on trumpet and percussion, on loan, one presumes, from his fledgling group The Fort Apache Band.

The title cut is an achingly beautiful slow ballad, surely Lightsey's finest composition. Beautifully rendered by the quartet, it sets a definite tone and a very high standard for the rest of the CD, which the group rarely fails to duplicate. Other highlights are a very slow version of the classic Estate and the playful Nandi, which showcases DeBriano's nascent writing skills.

Maybe this isn't the most important jazz CD ever recorded, but it's a personal favorite from my rather ample collection.
