Labeled "quietcore" and "slo-fi," drawing attention more to instrumentation volume and a practically nonexistent movement than musical content, the Turin Brakes of The Optimist (their debut) was better served by songwriting than dynamics. Self-produced fragile folk, The Optimist swung at a melancholic strum. With sophomore album Ether Song, however, Turin Brakes has turned to studio as friend, not foe, resulting in an assured strut more akin to the second-wave that Brit-pop comparisons already leveled. Of course, with lightly brushed psychedelics now swelling to cradle-soaring vocal harmonies, Ether Song increasingly recalls the soulful SoCo of Neil Young-era Crosby, Stills & Nash/Buffalo Springfield through Ry Cooder as it does South London. Additional moments shimmer of Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan as brightly as Radiohead, Doves and Coldplay by way of Jeff Buckley. Adding a touch of churn to chime, theres an increased unease bubbling beneath Ether Songs spectral lope, making a bewitching brew of triumphant introspection while not unprecedented, but still plenty personal.

A Gem.......2005-09-12
undeniably a classic.......2005-05-12
Ether soft.......2005-02-24
A spacey organ buildup, a trippy beat and a folky guitar open the first song, "Blue Hour." This song sets the tone for the rest of the album, with its mix of spacey shoegazer and folk-rock, set to angsty lyrics about "let the sun be done/let the air wash the city clean." It's one of those songs that gets deeper and more layered the more you listen to it.
But the album really catches your attention with the soft, rising "Long Distance," which is the softest song that Muse never wrote. And in some songs like "Self Help" and "Panic Attack," the boys eschew the spacepop angle in favor of some mild spacerock. Nothing too hard, just a ringing electric guitar that weaves into the music seamlessly.
With those new additions, it's obvious that Turin Brakes is trying out new things, rather than sticking slavishly to what got them famous in the first place. The only flaw is that they seem a bit undecided what direction to take, and so "Ether Song" feels a bit unguided. But it's somehow pleasant to hear Ollie Knights singing in his slightly wobbly voice, "Remind myself that I'm not just in it for the money." Refreshing.
This U.K. duo started off with acoustic guitar, bass and drums, augmented by some low-key keyboard that adds a delicate edge to otherwise ordinary rock instrumentation. And in "Ether Song," Knights and multitalented bandmate Gale Paridjanian are experimenting with a less folk, more rock sound. Fortunately, they know how to mesh electric guitar into the instrumentation.
With music like that, it's inevitable that the songs are a bit on the downbeat side; Knight and Paridjanian's songs tend to be focused on love and dissatisfaction, only breaking out for the poignant "Little Brother," which is all about someone ELSE's loneliness. It's the sound of unhappiness, which could be optimistic if given a little shove.
These twentysomething musicians -- who are about to release their third album -- are in good form in their second space-rock-folk album, "Ether Song."
Sunset Music.......2005-02-17
Undeniably the guitar work is fantastic, and each song has a feel to it that makes it perfect for a hot summer evening, watching the sun go down. There are many bands offering this kind of style overall (without the dual vocals), and Turin Brakes are one of the best at it, especially as they avoid the melancholy approach of many of their contemporaries. The closest I can think of comparing them to are bands like I Am Kloot, David Kitt, and possibly Ed Harcourt.
Ignore the comparisons to Jeff Buckley - they're absolutely nothing like him. Jeff is [was] very melancholy, and produced somtimes over-agonisingly emotional music - Turin Brakes are a lot less demanding that that, and such become a lot more bearable for repeated listenings.
Amazing.......2005-01-06
I had only heard the one song from the band "Pain Killer" and dicided to take a chance.
I have hardly stopped listening to it ever since I bought it, I am listening to it now, It is awesome.

Anyway, I'd like to talk about the bonus disc. US record label Astralwerks likes to put bonus songs onto UK discs released here in the States to make picky consumers more likely to buy them. This time around, they've added a four-track bonus disc of demos and alternate studio sessions for "Blue Hour", "Self Help", "Long Distance" and a new song, "Bright Golden Lights". I would say they're not worth your time, but, hey, they're free, so they're pretty good. Also on the bonus disc is an enhanced CD-ROM with a video EPK (Electronic Press Kit) showing how they made the album, how it compares with their last CD, "The Optimist", and a pretty cool bit about how they shot the album cover. All the footage is interspersed with impressive concert footage.

On with the Brakes.......2005-02-24
They debuted in 2001 with "The Optimist" LP, and immediately gained a reputation from its spacey, floaty brand of folk music. Ollie Knights provides gentle wobbly vocals, while Gale Paridjanian provides everything else, folky guitar solos and the odd dash of keyboard. It's a good album, although it needed some beefing up.
That beef-up came with their sophomore album, "Ether Song." Here Knights and Paridjanian experiment with their spacey folk sound, adding electric guitars and more keyboard to the mix. It doesn't stray far from the original sound of their music, but it does expand on it, making it richer and deeper than before.
Turin Brakes is sometimes unfairly criticized because of their "young, angsty and British" band status, especially with their songs about love and loneliness. That isn't really fair, since their sound is radically different from that of most other British bands. It's simpler, airier, and more stripped down than most bands compared to them.
It's especially startling when you consider that both members are only in their mid-twenties, yet have managed a polished style that is apparently still evolving. As they settled into their given style, Knights and Paridjanian began to dabble with new sounds and directions. "Ether Song" suffers from a bit of creative waffling, but it does explore new territory.
With singles from their third album coming out soon, it's worth checking out their first two albums. Turin Brakes' "Optimist" and "Ether Song" are a pretty, melancholy blend of space-pop and folk, and definitely worth checking out.
