Alana Davis' debut Blame It On Me delves deep into themes of non-conformity and individualism, presented largely as jazzy lullabies. Though Davis has confessed to not being very hip to the sorority of modern vocalists, she opens the record with a reworking of Ani DiFranco's "32 Flavors." But Davis is no elder stateswoman, either. At 23, the New Yorker is just coming into her own, and the subject matter of her songs shows an artist with a youthful perspective - "The weight of the world has fallen/ and the rubble is at my feet," she sings on The Weight of the World" - even though she has the voice of someone twice her age. It's almost as if she's out to assert her unique place in the circuit of singer-songwriters by returning to the heart and soul that made them so popular in the first place. --Nick Heil

5 out of 5 stars Alana Davis' CD.......2005-09-12

Alana Davis' 'Blame It On Me' was a very enjoyable cd that I am glad to add in my collection. I am surprised that I haven't heard much about her until recently. The girl gots some soul! She has a very soothing yet sometimes throaty pitch to her voice. Everytime I hear her music it takes me back to my college days when I frequented open mic night at various dives, heard an unknown artist and walked away with the summation, "That kids got talent! I think they'll make it!"

1 out of 5 stars Ruined it.......2005-08-03

Alana ruined Ani DiFranco's "32 Flavors." I'm a huge Ani fan, and listened to 32 flavors by Alana, and was thoroughly disappointed at how different and... how much worse it was.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful album - a timeless classic.......2005-06-03

Alana's album is a timeless classic, not bogged down by current trends or other musical fads. Her album is wonderful. This one is definitely one of my favorites of all time. The vibe reminds of Ben Harper, marQue, Jack Johnson, Tracy Chapman, and other great singer/songwriters. This is definitely a must listen! Alana Davis is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Blame Alana for a GREAT album.......2005-05-01

This record is by far a jewel. On her debut Alana gives us a range of emotion and heartfelt prose. Every song is carefully presented and orchestrated to make you feel you're there beside her or that she is speaking directly to you. My favorite tracks are Free, Murder and Rest of Yesterday.

2 out of 5 stars BAD VERSION OF 32 FLAVORS.......2004-12-20

I cannot express how super PISSED i was to hear alana's cover of ani's 32 flavors on the freakin radio. It was chopped up for mainstream listening and if she had any respect for Ani's work she would have never covered the song the way that she did. I only looked her up because I was curious to see who the idiot was that tore up my favorite Ani song. I like her voice, but I have no respect for her work. Get a new manager Alana. Don't cover any more Ani songs...please.

5 out of 5 stars Rachel is indeed Sweet.......2007-01-08

Probably one of the most overlooked talents of all times. If you have never heard of Rachel Sweet then search her on Amazon and buy everything that is available. She is indeed that good. If you don't melt when you hear "Then he Kissed Me" you may not truly be human.

5 out of 5 stars The "SWEET"est voice you'll ever hear!.......2006-07-17

Rachel Sweet SHOULD have made it big in the music industry,
however due to poor representation and lack of promotion, this
talented voice was left by the way-side.
Upon her arrival on the music scene, she was "the little girl
with the big voice".
Signed to the now-gone "Stiff" label, critics raved about the
talent of this young girl from Akron, Ohio. She had the voice
that SHOULD have sold more records (in my opinion) than
Madonna, Britney Spears, etc.
Rachel Sweet IS a great singer...PERIOD!
I am certain that I am not alone in saying "Rachel,we miss
you and want you back in the music scene!"
She did appear in several TV episodes ("Seinfeld", "Dream On",
"Night Court", etc.) and a few movies ("Gypsy", "Sing", "The
Investigator" and "All Tied Up"). Her parts were ALWAYS way too
brief! She's the reason "Cry-baby" is such a fun movie (she's
the singing voice of Amy Locane). She's the ONLY voice that
should have ever been used for "Barbie's" singing voice - she
was only one of several. If you can obtain a copy of the out-of-
print "Barbie" cd, I urge you to listen!
The best thing about Rachel is that she can do any style of
music. Her early singles for "Derrick" label were full out and
out country. Her "stiff" days consisted of country, rock and
roll and even a touch of blues as did her "columbia" days
with some added pop! I even have her singing "silver bells"
which is my favorite version of THAT song! She's done several
children's music which has become a fun part of my collection!
Her first two albums- "Fool Around" and "Protect The Innocent"
showcase the variety of her vocal talents. This collection of
her final two LPs for Columbia, show her in a different style,
slightly more mature. Her version of "shadows of The night" is
BETTER than Pat Benatar! Her only hit in the U.S. was "Everlasting Love" with Rex Smith. She deserved MORE HITS!
Where is Rachel now? She has done producing and writing for
several comedy sitcoms ("Sports Night", "Dharma and Greg",
"The Nanny", etc.) and hosted her own "WAY TOO SHORT-LIVED"
series on the Comedy Channel titled "The Sweet Life".
(All you DVD companies out there-obtain the rights and
get THIS series released!)
Lately there has been NO SIGN of this talented actress/singer.
RACHEL-WE MISS YOU !!!!!!!!!!
For those of you who have not been introduced to this great
talent-take the first step-PURCHASE THIS CD-LISTEN AND ENJOY-
then go from there!

3 out of 5 stars Coulda / Shoulda Been Better.......2006-06-07

Man - these two disks just didn't hold up over time. Of Sweet's four disks, '....Then He Kissed Me' was her weakest anyway. Sorry - but anyone who is forced by a record company to duet w/Rex Smith is a goner.

That's not to say that there aren't some moments. "Shadows of the Night" is still better than Benatar's - but maybe that's because I knew it before Pat came out w/it. The rest of the disk just seems so amateurish. It really was beneath Sweet's talents and ability.

'Blame it on Love' is a little stronger. The material and production are hers - so in theory she'd have only herself to blame for her success or failure. It's really a draw. The first half of the album (or most of it) is actually quite good ("Voo Doo", "Paralyzed"), but after it hits "Cruisin' Love", it becomes like material on '....Then He Kissed Me'. Really nothing special.

Though Sweet's voice was probably strongest on her debut, her strongst material and diversity really shine on 'Protect the Innocent' - which is not domestically on CD.

1 out of 5 stars Blame It On Bad Remastering.......2006-02-08

At long last these two great albums see the light of day on CD -- only to be botched by Sony/BMG/Collectibles. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer who raved about the "pristine remastered sound." It is harsh, compressed, nearly unlistenable! This is truly one of the worst-sounding CDs I have ever heard. Absolutely brutal! The first album, And Then He Kissed Me, is by far the worst; Blame It On Love fairing a little better. To top it off, the inserts are skimpy and don't reproduce any of the original artwork. No (re)mastering credits, or blame, are given. This whole production is a real shame and a disappointment. Here's hoping a reissue label out there (that actually cares about the music) gives these albums the proper treatment.

4 out of 5 stars Contains Rachels' "Shadows of the Night" (slightly diff. lyrics)........2005-12-31

"... and then he kissed me" was not Rachels' greatest release but it did contain her FANTASTIC version of "Shadows of the Night" (Yes, the song that Pat Benatar turned into a hit). This version contains a few changes because Rachel added her own lyrics (Which Benatar removed).

"Blame it on Love" is the album that should have made Rachel a household name. "hearts on the line" is great power-pop. "Voodoo", "paralyzed" and "sticks and stones" showcase the different styles she is capable of.

Both albums have flaws and more than a few "duds" but they also have some real high points. When these two albums are combined together you just can't lose! If you missed Rachel Sweet in the 80's... you might want to give her a listen now. Better late than never!

As mentioned in another review, the sound quality on this CD suffers from poor re-mastering. The tracks on ".. then he kissed me" seem to have the highs and lows chopped off, almost as if you're listening to a collection of very compressed mp3's. The poor re-mastering and a slight "glitch" in the track "shadows of the night" detracts from the overall listening enjoyment of this CD. I'm glad these albums are finally on CD, but I was hoping for higher quality sound and was very surprised about the sound glitch in one of my favorite tracks!

2 out of 5 stars What's happened to Debbie?.......2005-04-15

I am not a staunch Gibson fan like most of the drooling 5-star reviews here. But I loved her in the 80's and think her to be a talented singer-songwriter who puts modern pop moppets to shame. I thought it was awesome when she broke into Broadway and made a steady career of it.
Then I heard 'Colored Lights'.
I ask, Debbie!(sorry, DEBORAH), what has happened to you??
Like others here, I applaud her choice to include lesser-known songs. But in doing so, it really behoves her to SELL them as great songs, not rework them for her own interpretation. I felt like I was listening not to the pure-toned, crystal voice of our favourite teen idol, but someone doing a bad impersonation of her. There is hardly a single line she sings which isn't punctured by bad ennunciation, poor phrasing or a lack of respect for the intent of the composers.
There were no gravelly growls(meant to sound sexy, no doubt, but too overdone to succeed), breathy sighs, uneven tone, lacklustre dynamics, excessive scooping, wavery pitch and lack of top range in the Debbie Gibson I remember. But her voice on this album is such a mere shadow of its youthful self that she resorts to these irritating vocal bandaids to get through the song. Any track that had a 'big finish' invariably caused her to run out of steam long before she got there. A belter, Deb is not.
(and I know what I'm talking about, I'm a trained singer myself. If Deborah has a singing teacher, he/she should be shot).

This album was a huge disappointment for me. I love Broadway, but Deb fails terribly to give these songs the great renditions they deserve.
I should add, I have never had the fortune to see Deb sing live, so for all I know, maybe she COULD have done these songs justice had she avoided the pop slant. But this album shows neither the songs nor any talent she still has to advantage at all.

Listen to some Idina Menzel if you want a pop-feel voice that can also out-Belt them all.

5 out of 5 stars A Taste of Broadway.......2004-10-13

I've been a fan of her since God only knows. I know she's not just talented but she is very passionate of (her) music. Knowing that she moved herself into broadways, it's rather of a challenge for me to listen to the songs especially when I'm too familiar with her pop genre. But after a while, I'm used to it coz Debbie is still Debbie to me. She's not afraid of re-arranging the original song to her style, at least she knows what she's doing and again she's proven it. My most favourite track is "Colored Lights", it's light, cheerful, somewhat witty and, in a way, brings up my imagination of seeing her (and the casts) on stage performing the song. All in all, Debbie still has a class and style for us to share.

1 out of 5 stars OUCH!.......2004-08-23

Deborah Gibson is a talented rock star. With a good musical director, she has proved herself to be a wonderful musical theatre performer. This album, however, is a very uneasy marriage of the two genres. She sings every showtune on the album as if it's a pop tune with horrendous bubble gum arrangements. I have seen Miss Gibson in two musicals and have heard her sing showtunes live on other occasions- she knows how to sing showtunes. On this album, however, she's trying to pander to her pop audience and in the process, she created an album that fails as a pop album and as a showtune album. I can only hope that Miss Gibson finds a better musical director the next time she decides to record showtunes.

5 out of 5 stars (Deborah Gibson ) AT HER BEST!!!!.......2004-04-23

Deborah really sing's her heart out on this cd
and it is a must for all of Deborah's Fan's.
Please take the time out and listen to some clip's
of some of the song's from the album. Thank's.

Love You Deborah!!!!
You are the Best!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Deborah delivers deliciously.......2004-02-13

After more than 15 years in the business, Deborah Gibson has learned many lessons and fulfilled many dreams. After 2001's horrifyingly misguided "M.Y.O.B.," she returns to the adult contemporary sound that landed her two number one hits on the Billboard charts, and turns that up a couple of notches. By selecting 13 showtunes from varying Broadway musicals, Gibson satisfies immensely, and delivers a unique compilation worthy of at least one full listen.

"Colored Lights" is not meant to be a showcase of hit tunes; many of the songs on this opus aren't radio hits. Instead, Gibson puts together a delicious smorgasbord of rhythmic melodies and heartfelt ballads that complement her voice (that, strangely enough, hasn't seemed to change that much after more than a decade in the industry).

What is also important to consider in one's evaluation of "Colored Lights" is that, while comparison with the original works/performers is inevitable, we should also take the time to consider that Gibson's pop sensibilities will always shine through. Perhaps it is for that reason, that Gibson has had the best of both pop stardom and Broadway success, that she gives new dimension to these melodies.

The standouts on this collection include "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love," which radio would do well to pick up, as the soothing melody and heartfelt delivery will find AC audiences easily; "On My Own," off "Les Miserables," where Gibson as Eponine sounds both heartbroken yet hopeful; the playful title track, from "The Rink," which features some of the most whimsical lyrics I've heard off Broadway thus far; "Raise the Roof," which is truly enjoyable in its pseudo-Latino reincarnation in Gibson's hands (yes, it does beg for a house remix; Gibson's gay audience will see to its success), and "Anytime (I Am There)," which is heartbreaking in its stark delivery, and is easily one of my top five Gibson tracks of all time.

Admittedly, Gibson can't overcome comparisons to the definitive versions of some of the songs. Let's face it: Debbie ain't no Barbra. Her versions of "I'm the Greatest Star" and "Who Are You Now?," while stellar on their own, just fall flat when compare to Streisand's. "Let Me Entertain You," off "Gypsy," ironically, isn't very entertaining, and "Blame It On The Summer Night" drags on.

All in all, "Colored Lights" puts together a collection of songs that are quite distinct and classy, and is easily one of the more worthy albums in Ms. Gibson's discography. She would do well to continue producing albums along this line instead of trying to fight the Britney's and Christina's, because those fads fade, and only the classics remain. Trust in "Colored Lights" to earn a well-deserved place in that section of your record collection.

        4 out of 5 stars WHO??!.......2007-03-27

New York City-based group 4 by Four hit the scene in 1987 to a lukewarm reception. The album had very little fanfare, as the group came off as a cross between New Edition and the Jackson 5, but couldn't hold their own with either of them. The disc featured tracks of basically meat-and-potatoes rehashes (e.g., they mostly all sounded alike), but had a moderate slow-jam "turntable hit" in Come Over, which received great late-night quiet-storm play mainly because it was written by then-Ready for the World lead singer Melvin Riley, Jr. A close listen to this track reveals the lead singer attempting to moan and croon just like Riley. After this album, they were never heard from again, and rightfully so. They just did not have the musical tools to be viewed as anything but a novelty. However, if you can find this cd, it now commands a high price. Thankfully, I bought mine when it first came out.
