5 out of 5 stars This guy is amazing. Buy this and see him live if possible........2007-03-07

Really. This album is so good and deep and dark. Robert Johnson channeling Flannery O'Connor? Trent Reznor processed by the Blind Boys of Alabama? Whatever -- it's great. And live, he ALMOST eclipsed Lucinda Williams. Almost. :)

5 out of 5 stars "Cooking in the Dark" said it perfectly..........2006-04-06

The music on Arkadelphia is raw, unique, powerful. "Cooking in the Dark" said it so perfectly -- Arkadelphia speaks to and about the troubled souls of men seeking God and redemption but questioning and disquieted and lost. It's part blues at its most bare-bones best and part gothic Americana. The slide guitar work and percussion on the songs are assured, and the lyrics are evocative and stay with you long after the listening is over. If you like Otis Taylor, Jim White, or any similar modern blues/gothic Americana artists, you'll want to listen to Jungklas' Arkadelphia. It's music that will get in your blood and stay there.

4 out of 5 stars Stark Blues.......2005-10-13

Very unique. Stark. Droning blues. The guy uses "big" words in his lyrics but pulls it off. Definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Album - highly recommended.......2005-10-12

Vivid imagery. Thought provoking. Definitely not run of the mill. Not for the faint of heart.

On August 10 Rob Jungklas opened for Lucinda Williams @ the North Carolina Museum of Art to an audience of 3,000. Most of his set was pulled from "Arkadelphia." This is an excellent and deep album, but dark enough that it challenges us to go to where Jungklas leads. My favorite track is "Human Cannonball" with the closest thing to a hook & catchy chorus, "In the eyes of God, I was meant to crawl, had to stick my jaw out & be a human cannonball." It's such a memorable melody that after I pulled this CD off the shelf after seeing him live, it's now playing frequently in my personal top ten. Son House was one of the most raucous players of Delta blues that influenced both Robert Johnson & Muddy Waters. His legendary performances that'd scare the b'Jesus out of you seemed to be torn between sacred spiritual and the rawest blues. Jungklas loosly references House to equally explore torn contradictions, "I don't want to be a holy roller; I don't want to be a Delta transcendentalist; I don't want to hate the men I talk to; I don't want to love the women I kiss." "Hell & Helena" is an apocalyptic raging rocker, "Blind Willie Johnson had his corner staked out; the spirit moved him & he began to shout; He said, "We are not forsaken. The End is near." The devil said, "Willie, you're mistaken, it's already here." On "God Rode Through Clarksdale" the sound softens slightly with more acoustic slide, but equally dark and disturbing images as God is portrayed as hurting and venegful, "You killed my son." With Lamar Sorrento's "disturbed guitar," Jungklas creates a delta soundtrack for the apocalypse that is brilliant in its reach & sonically sears the ear. This is not music for the superficial. It boils with passion like cooking in the dark. Lucinda heaped praises on Jungklas. With the heavy sound she explored on "World Without Tears," they are kindred musical spirits. Enjoy!
