5 out of 5 stars Return of A Classic: Guadalcanal Diary's Best Album.......2007-06-26

This band never put out a bad album and I humbly submit 2x4 is their best. That being said, the release of 2x4 on CD corrects a great music injustice perpetrated by the EMI braintrust who likely thought it was either too regional or too alt to sell(further evidence record company executives have wooden ears separaed by a vacuum).

Where to start??? One must first address the great writing. Murray Attaway can write introspective and accessible songs. Quite spiritial with dark tones yet never out and out depressing, probably because the melodies lift and the guitars ring out. Then there's the wicked spot-on doses of humor that come in time to help shift the mood in a differnt direction, keeping the listener interested.

Music, more than many forms of art, is time period dependent in both the artist's and listener's life. That said, this stuff holds up pretty well because it is rich with multiple interpretations for the listener...And it's a real sonic treat with great guitar based melodies to give any Kinks fan a thrill. Pop music can get more complicated, but it can not get much better than this slice of musical nirvana.

I urge any fan of melodic pop with an edge (think Kinks) to purchase this. It's a pop classic that deserves it's due and we, the listeners, are the benefactors of this great sounding re-release. Justice is better late than never!

5 out of 5 stars Guadalcanal Diary 2X4.......2007-01-31

This is a must have for anyone interested in 80's era "college music" rock. I'm not sure why this band didn't gain broader acceptance, except that Athens, GA is only entitled to one megaband.

5 out of 5 stars A classic re-work!!!.......2007-01-28

Guadalcanal diary's career was sadly too short, maybe because the Athens sound ( REM, B-52's )was wearing thin by the time this CD came out originally in 1991. This re-issue, with bonus tracks and outtakes, clearly shows the potential this band had. One of the best re-packaging in recent memory, you'll wish this band had released more material like this. There are more CD's by the band, but this is definitely the place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Underappreciated Gem.......2006-09-12

I had all of GD's cassettes back in my college days and it's nice to see these albums re-issued so that I can add them to my current disc collection. There are lots of winks and nods to obvious influences but tons of originality. Really nice dynamics within the basic band structure and good singing. I always enjoyed the pure jangly guitar pop of the 80's and this CD is a really fine example. Fave tracks are "Litany(Life Goes On)","3AM", and "Little Birds".
I caught them at The Vogue at Broad Ripple in Indianapolis circa 1988. It was a really high energy, great sounding show. I remember Jeff playing in what appeared to be big silk pajamas.
It would be nice to catch them again someday. Until then, I'll dig on the re-releases.

5 out of 5 stars Their best in my humble opinion.......2006-07-13

Murray Attaway is a great songwriter, and Jeff Walls
is a smoking guitar player, and they are both at
their very finest on this album. Buy it and make
your ears very happy !
BTW - Guadalcanal are more of an ATLANTA band
than an ATHENS band, as they are originally from Marietta Georgia
( a burb of ATL ). True, a couple of them have at times lived
near Athens, but they are basically from land of the BIG CHICKEN!

    Album Description

In 1984 ROIR, then a cassette-only record label, released a LIVE cassette-only European concert tape by EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN ("Collapsing New Buildings"). E/N's "2 x 4" has become a classic, receiving both lavish praise from the press and commercial success from its legions of fans (over 20,000 cassettes sold). AVAILABLE NOW ON CD (REMASTERED).

Since 1980 these conceptual avant-garde anti-artists have released over twenty recordings on labels such as Mute, Some Bizarre, Rough Trade, Thirsty Ear, Homestead, Etc. Their newest studio recording "Ende Nue" has just come out in Germany on Rough Trade and will be released in the U.S. by Nothing Records early in 1998 in connection with an extensive U.S. tour.

    OF THE 1984 "2 X 4" RELEASE:

"FAR AND AWAY THE MOST LISTENABLE RECORDING FROM THE PREMIERE NOISIESTS. ALMOST AS RIVETING AS SEEING THEM IN PERSON." ROCKPOOL 85'

"NO ONE MAKES A MIGHTIER OR MORE EXHILARATING NOISE THAN GERMANY'S EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN. THEIR MUSIC WITH IT'S HYPNOTIC PERCUSSIVE RIFFS AND SONIC SQUALLS, HAS REAL FORM & SUBSTANCE. NONE OF THE NEUBAUTEN STUDIO RECORDS HAS QUITE MANAGED TO CAPTURE IT'S OVERWHELMING LIVE SOUND. THIS ALBUM ADDRESSES THAT PROBLEM." Kurt Loder- Liner Notes/1984

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars industrial life.......2005-10-02

Well, two Seinsucht's for the price of one - that alone should justify the purchase of the premiere Live industrial album.

Like many, I had purchased this on tape, and like many I wore that tape out letting it cycle thru over and over again. It's only eight songs, short of fifty minutes - skimpy for a cd.

But the songs capture the feel of live performance. I saw them in Myrtle Edwards Park (with the Burlington Northern freight trains roaring past) in Seattle's epic free concert, and nothing was really canned.

While not entirely impromptu, it was certainly immediate. 2x4 is the best intro to Neubauten, and ROIR was right to simply reproduce the original cassette.

2 out of 5 stars Not My Cup Of Tea...........2005-06-09

I'm a fan of the later E.N. records so this one was way too "industrial" for me. Lot's of gutteral screaming and also just poorly recorded. It seems those who like the early stuff often don't care for the later works but I'm just the opposite. I think these guys grew into something special but to me this stuff is just nothing but noise.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR FANS.......2004-02-12

YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW IF THIS KIND OF THING IS FOR YOU OR NOT. FOR THE UNINITIATED, EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN IS , AT LEAST ON THE SURFACE, WHAT WE USED TO CALL "INDUSTRIAL", BEFORE THE TERM WAS CO-OPTED AND CORRUPTED BY THE LIKES OF MINISTRY AND NINE INCH NAILS. LABELS ASIDE, EN THEMSELVES HAVE GONE FROM MAKING VERY PRIMITIVE, ABRASIVE, SOMETIMES DOWN-RIGHT DISTURBING "SONGS" ( I HASTEN TO USE THAT TERM, THESE RECORDINGS DO NOT FOLLOW THE BASIC "VERSE - CHORUS -VERSE -CHORUS - BRIDGE- CHORUS- FADE" STRUCTURE OF FAMILILAR ROCK N ROLL )ON THEIR EARLIER RECORDINGS HEARD HERE, AND HAVE EVOLVED INTO SOMETHING QUITE UNIQUE; A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS WHO TAKE FOUND SOUNDS AND INCORPORATE THEM INTO MUSICAL PIECES THAT RANGE FROM SEMI- CLASSICAL, AMBIENT, SOMETIMES DANCE-ISH ( BUT CERTAINLY NOT WHAT I'D CALL DANCE MUSIC - IT IS SIMPLY OFTEN VERY RHYTHMIC ) AND SOMETIMES APPROACH WHAT I WOULD CALL TRADITIONALLY ARRANGED "ROCK" MUSIC. I PERSONALLY PREFER THE EARLIER, MORE FREE FORM RECORDINGS. THEY ARE FOR THE MOST PART HEAVILY PERCUSSIVE, USING HAMMERS, PIECES OF METAL, HUBCAPS, ETC TO FORM THE BASIS OF THE RHYTHMS OF THE PIECES. THEY ALSO FEATURE VOCALS THAT ARE ENTIRELY GERMAN, SOME SPOKEN, SOME WHISPERED, SOME CHANTED, AND SOME SCREAMED. I CAN ONLY SAY THAT FOR ME, "2 X 4" INFORMS SO MANY EMOTIONS - IT IS QUITE A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE, DESPITE ( OR MAYBE BECAUSE OF ) ITS SHORT LENGTH. I HAVE PLAYED THIS FOR MANY OF MY FRIENDS WHOM I CONSIDERED TO BE OPEN-MINDED ENOUGH TO ENJOY THIS. THE REACTIONS RUN FROM "THAT IS AMAZING, WHO IS THAT?" TO " MY GOD, WHAT A DREADFUL RACKET, WOULD YOU PLEASE TURN THAT OFF?" AT ONE HALOWEEN PARTY I HOSTED SEVERAL YEARS AGO I PROGRAMMED A FEW EN SELECTIONS INTO THE BACKGROUND LISTENING , AND ACTUALLY HAD A FEW GUESTS TELL ME "THAT SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME." BLIXA AND CO WOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD. IN PARTING I CAN TELL YOU ONLY ONE THING, IF YOU LIKE EN AND DON'T HAVE "2X4" I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

3 out of 5 stars Early Neubauten that works more often than not..........2000-11-26

I always thought the notion of a 'live' industrial album was a bit of a con. The fact is, most audiences at a true industrial show won't make the anywhere NEAR the kind of noise the act will (unless you're a NIN stalwart) during the course of the show.

But here, in one of the earliest Neubauten efforts, most of the tunes work in so far as they represent where the band was at that point in time. "Strategies Against Architecture II" is infinitely better, but decidedly NOT for the timid. It's got it's boring moments as well, which is why I haven't given it one of those absurdly reverential 5-star ratings.

Industrial music is not meant to sooth, and this album is no exception. But complete your collection with sharper Neubauten releases, and pick up this one after you're sure you can handle it.

    5 out of 5 stars keine angst!.......2000-01-23

Probably the best early live recordings (80-83) from the only band that matters. This disc captures the true essence of E.N. Remastered and available for the first time on CD.
