Scotland's Texas (they have nothing to do with the Lone Star State) go for the U.S. gold with The Hush. Attributing the Motown sound as a major influence, Texas's sound is heavily influenced by contemporary American R&B. Now, when we think of Motown, the word soul is immediately evoked, but Texas's sound is about as far away from true soul as Dallas is from the band's hometown of Glasgow. Not that they don't try. The chorus on the opening track of "In Our Lifetime" is a too-close-for-comfort imitation of the chorus from TLC's single "Creep." On "Tell Me the Answer" frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri emulates Prince's falsetto à la "Kiss." But her voice is an overproduced, emotional flatliner that lacks the bump and grind that TLC and Prince deliver. However, the album is adorned with lush, grand instrumental arrangements typical of fine Britpop--making Texas the bride to, say, Robbie Williams's groom. --Beth Massa

The idea here was to put two masters together--one classical cellist, one improvisational singer/sound-effects performer--and voilà! instant amazing, unique, hip--and, hopefully, hit--record. The intriguing setup was to see what would happen when each led the other through the unfamiliar territory of his own specialty. The success of this recording lies not so much in the music or even in the overall performances, but in the fascinating and fun opportunity to sit in on the musicians' good-natured, respectful give-and-take, to witness an uncommon form of artistic chemistry that allows each performer to expand his vision and even his technique. On one hand we get Bobby McFerrin's impressionistic, improvisatory jazz/pop; on the other we enjoy Yo-Yo Ma's highly refined, formalized musicianship. Originally planned as a disc for children, Hush goes far beyond its initial premise, with each of the 13 tracks demonstrating these musicians' unique gifts and showing that, whether it's Vivaldi or jazz, it's all music and it's all a lot of fun. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:
Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin.......2007-05-12
Yo-Yo keeps on experimental.......2006-03-04
It's an incredible fusion of strings and vocal strings, in some moments it is not possible to separate them, some times is like a big keyboard directed by a single musician. In a word, they experiment, and the result was incredible.
This is no "Don't Worry, Be Happy".......2005-10-23
Honestly, I could do without the non-classical pieces on this CD...although I enjoy them.
But the classical interpretations are some of the most heavenly, wonderful, beautiful, awe-inspiring things that I have ever heard, on any CD, in any genre! Yes, that good!
McFerrin uses his voice as the perfect instrument and accompanient to Ma's cello. They were made for each other.
Listen to the samples of the classical pieces if you're a doubter...
Excellent CD!.......2005-09-22
Bobby uses his voice as a fantastic sounding 'instrument' to sing notes much like an instrument playing a duet with Yo-Yo; sometimes his voice sounds so much like a real instrument that you even forget that you are hearing vocals--I don't even know what other vocalist could pull this off. It is a fascinating experiment. I recommend it highly!
My 1st introduction to Bobby McFerrin (3.5-4 stars).......2005-05-29
Anyway as I was gonna say this was the 1st album I got introduced a bit by Bobby McFerrin. Not SIMPLE PLEASURES nor SPONTANEOUS INVENTIONS. Just this 1. I hope to hear more from him and collect all of his albums incl. Yo Yo Ma's. They still sound good. No doubt.

An album that breaks your heart, and then rebuilds it.......2007-07-17
It moved its way into the car stereo, and the first song is now my favourite by a mile. Watching the sunset over the water on the way home has never stired me up so much than when listening to this CD. It has grown old a little quick, but for "THE" feeling it gives upon first listens, its an automatic 5 star from me.
GREAT CD!.......2007-05-09
Music, lyrics and the subject fused together perfectly! .......2007-05-08
I haven't really read all the lyrics yet, but I just can't help it to comment on the last song "You Are the Moon". It's so beautiful. The music and the lyrics fuse together perfectly to reflect what it's describing. The calmness of the piano sounds just like that of the night and the melody as beautiful as the glow of the moon...and Greta's charming voice singing softly. It just brings up the vision. So nice, so well done! Can't stop listening to it again and again.
Rest of the album is good too. You won't really have to skip any song. The whole album is pretty good when I listened to it initially. The "Lighthouse" was especially catchy among them. At first it was because of her voice and the piano, and its kinda up and down but calm melody. But then when I read the lyrics, it's even better than I thought! The story is a haunting one and the lyrics has a slight effect for that as well -- the witty trap at the end is a nice twist.
I'm sure you can read details in a lot other reviews or just totally get the CD and listen to it yourself, so I'll save it for now~
Outstandingly Refreshing.......2007-04-18
Amazing and Unbelievable.......2007-04-10
The album starts out with the song "We Intertwined", which is vocalized by Bob Morris. This is definitely a good opener song and it features the line "like vines we intertwined", which is where the CD title comes from. Then comes track two, "A Dark Congregation", which totally blew me away. The sheer beauty and clarity of Greta Salpeter's voice is amazing and that alone could make you fall in love with the song and any other song with her voice. Then comes "Sweet Tangerine" featuring Bob Morris' voice and it is definitely a strong song for the album. Then we have "Lions Roar", which is a pretty short song and it doesn't really have a chorus, but that's what makes it great. It is fun and has good lyrics and music and makes you want to keep listening. Then comes "Lighthouse", Greta's next song. It is truly amazing and you can definitely hear the emotion in the lyrics and you get a total mental picture of what is going on. Then comes "Don't Wake Me Up", a fun and catchy song that features vocals from Greta and Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy. Then we have "Where We Went Wrong", a Bob song, that uses nautical metaphors to describe a relationship gone awry. Next is "Magnolia", a Greta song that is very good has great lyrics, and is very catchy. After that we have the famous "Wine Red", which is the first song I ever heard from this band. I liked it when I first heard it and I still do. There are dual vocals between Bob and Greta and it definitely a perfect sound. Then comes "Out Through the Curtain", the last song that Bob sings on the album. It is definitely a good closing for him, which just brings us to the last song on the album, sung by Greta, which is "You Are the Moon". A very nice song if I do say so myself and you will definitely fall in love with it.
If you are even considering this band, I say go for it 100%, and and I promise you that, given you like alternative music, you will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for any Decemberists fan (or anyone else!).......2007-01-10
The CD opens with a lazily playful tribute to the narrator's love in one of the Decemberists' ubiquitous seaside settings. Somewhat bouncy syncopation adds to the relaxed undertone. Shiny is a bit faster, but is probably my least favorite song on the CD-- it sounds a bit hurried and musically incomplete. My Mother was a Chinese Trapeze Artist is an interesting story about someone whose birth and family seems a bit confused, ranging from the sister's husband wanting to start "a punk rock band in South Carolina" to the narrator being betted away "to a blind brigadier in a game / of high stakes canasta."
"Angel Won't You Call Me" is pretty upbeat, remeniscent of something perhaps classic rock-esque. "I Don't Mind" again deals with one of the Decemberists' poetically confusing stories, a rather relaxed and possibly soporific song... "Apology song" is a solid and cheerful song with the Decemberists' excellent combination of harmony, guitar, and organ about a guy who loses his friend's bike (bike?)...
As seen reclining on an ocean swell.......2006-06-01
The songs themselves are six different stories in the ever-eclectic yarn of the Decemberists, with subjects ranging from World War II love stories ("My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist") to a heartfelt apology for losing a friend's bicycle ("Apology Song"). The wavering accordion-playing and acoustic guitar-strumming skates on impressive rhyme schemes stitched together with words like "provincial" and "ubiquitous," which make 5 SONGS, and indeed each successive Decemberists album, seem like a nineteenth century British novel. But who says there's anything wrong with that?
Whether you're a fan of altrock, folk rock, or indie in general, and if you're ready for something new and inimitably unique, I suggest you start here - and keep going.
Top Class!.......2006-03-21
This is a fun EP and a great introduction to The Decemberists if you are unfamiliar with their music. All songs are strong here with the possible exception of the rather whimsical 'Apology Song'. The rest are really excellent, particularly 'Angel Won't You Call Me' and 'My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist'. This is an impressive group whose music is oddly satisfying - 5 Songs is a top class EP which leaves me wanting more.
Is this a B sides cd??.......2005-09-07
The songs are all catchy, quirky and charming. I heard some comments about apology song. The comment mentioned, it is some song about some kids bike that got stolen while a friend was watching it for the summer. I think if you listen closely the end reveals that not only was the bike stolen, but so was his girlfriend. I liked the final reveal, but the song that stole my heart and rendered me listless into my mudhole of mediocrity was 'My mother the trapese artist.' This is possibly the decemberists finest song. 'my sister was found by a communist who had deserted his rank and followed his dream, to start up a punk rock band in South Carolina' the writing is that good through the entire song. These guys are just too good. They make me realize just how average I really am.
Five pleasant pop tunes... or six?.......2005-01-15
It opens with the airy "Oceanside," another song that hints at the rambling old towns and seashores that Decemberist songs are full of. That feeling sticks on through the EP, with the fast strums of "Shiny," the whimsical air of "My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist," and the downbeat ballad "I Don't Mind." The only one that lacks the whimsy is the boring "Apology Song," where frontman Colin Meloy apologizes to a childhood pal for the loss of a bike.
Every song on here is essentially folky and balladic, with Meloy's sea-shanty singing over mostly acoustic instrumentation. Admittedly it gets a bit monotonous musically, but the Decemberists had clearly grown in their literate songwriting by this point.
Meloy's is not quite the voice of an angel; it's a bit too nasal and flat for that. But it is admittedly charming when he sings about the sea and boyhood bike thefts. Musically, the songs are pleasant to the ear. But they are similar in style, which gets a bit monotonous, with the acoustic guitar is backed by steel guitarist Chris Funk and some mellow drums, as well as a slew of muted oddball instruments.
The songwriting is pretty uneven here -- while the writing of "Apology Song" is simplistic and a bit dull, "My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist" is absurdly whimsical and charming, the tale of a kid born to "a Chinese trapeze artist/In pre-war Paris/Smuggling bombs for the underground," who is born in a brothel and gambled away to (what else?) a brigadier on a ship.
The "5 Songs" EP is a charming bit of folk-pop, but it lacks substance in some songs. A pretty listen -- just skip the "Apology Song."

The Hush Sound--So Sudden.......2007-01-26
One of my favorites..........2006-06-12
"So Sudden" is best described as a wholly enjoyable album. While the themes of the songs can be sad or sullen, the music itself is catchy and delightful. Even the most bashful will catch themselves singing along with the lyrics, humming the tunes long after the stereo has been shut off.
While I have affection for all the tracks, I am very paritial to Greta's songs. Her voice, lyrics, and piano work take us on a journey through her soul. "Elieen" is particularly interesting because of the contrast between the mourning lyrics and the soaring music.
I also love "The Market". It is sweet and strange and the most original and unique song I've heard in a long time. It makes me smile without fail.
So Sudden...So Incredible.......2006-06-06

Believe all the hype you read about them, everything is true. I will be shocked if they do not become a huge success. They are FANTASTIC!!! An all-original sound, great catchy tunes, diverse vocals...this band has it all. Every song on the album is AWESOME!! And they are great with their fans. They held a meet & greet after the show and signed hundreds of autographs, talked with everyone & you can tell that they all are genuinely great people.
I wish them all the success in the world, they deserve it. And I cannot wait until June 6th for their second album release!!!
Thanks for renewing my faith in current music!!

Great Album!.......2006-04-22
I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.
My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.
Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.
Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14
"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."
The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.
Highly recommended.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. This album every bit as accomplished as the book. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
"Pairs [Gibson's] creaking, aching croon with sweeping strings, melancholy piano, and her carefully picked classical guitar to devastating effect." - WILLAMETTE WEEK"There's a wonderfully nostalgic, almost autumnal quality to Gibson's music--both innocent and melancholy, it harkens back to her small-town childhood in the best possible way." - PORTLAND TRIBUNE
"Gibson uses her clear, confident vocals to keep listeners riveted while she experiments with subtle, slightly askew strums." - PORTLAND MERCURY
Daughter of the town kindergarten teacher and a forest ranger, Laura Gibson's root runs deep in the small coastal town of Coquille, Oregon. An outsider to the burgeoning Portland music scene, Gibson's early choice of venues (an AIDS hospice here, a kindergarten class there) and her complete lack of music scene knowledge may have confused erstwhile veterans, but her homespun sincerity, enchanting voice, and mature songwriting won `em all over in a heartbeat. Listening to If You Come to Greet Me, it's immediately apparent something magical happened at Portland's Typefoundry Studios in Summer 2006 with the capable assistance of Adam Selzer (Norfolk & Western). The release is haunting, perfectly bolstered by gorgeous, orchestral arrangements that never detract from the melodic backbone of Gibson's songwriting. By the end of the sessions, almost all the members of Norfolk & Western had enthusiastically contributed performances. Wayne Miller filled out the troupe with tasteful, loping upright bass lines and Alex James (Delorean) stopped in to sing a few bars. If You Come to Greet Me demonstrates a rich tapestry of emotion over nine songs--hope, ennui, reflection, inspiration, loneliness, happiness, yearning--all stitched together with a steady songwriting hand, where imagery dovetails with melody in an irresistible way.
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous.......2007-03-07
As it turns out, Laura's album is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorites of the last few years. The songs are crafted in such a way that their scenes are only sketched in collectively by the fairly minimal lyrics, melody, and instrumentation. Laura's vocal style is compelling: phrasing varies all over the place, and she mixes sustained and clipped rhythms in a way that keeps things interesting (Cat Power came to mind for some reason).
Nightwatch in particular is amazing. I also love Hands in Pockets, Small Town Parade, and Country, Country.

The album that introduced me to Texas.......2005-02-02
"The Hush" is nothing short of sheer genius. This group channeled what seemed to be almost old school American '60's soul, with a modern RnB twist, that was executed with European sophisti-pop candor. From the organ laced melancholic soul of the title track, to the more by-the-numbers Motown-esque "When We Are Together" you can tell this is no ordinary pop record.
Songs such as "Sunday Afternoon" with a splash of a horn by the second chorus evoke musical sophistication in pop music that is rarely seen. Yet, Texas also realizes that they are a modern group, their nod to TLC's (who at the time in the same year of 1999 had released their third record "Fanmail") chorus of "Creep", is seen clearly in the lead-off single "In Our Lifetime's" chorus as well. This was not done due to lack of ideas, no, but rather is Texas' way of acknowleding that the modern, yet Asian flavored RnB bump of the track just mentioned was inspired (almost a tribute to them rather) by TLC's groundbreaking work in the genre of modern RnB.
Moodiness about the subjects of relationships, romance, & the direction of one's life are the content of these songs. As I discovered & one Amazon reviewer poined out, "this is some of the most life-affirming music you'll ever hear". Sharleen Spiteri the lead-singer isn't a diva, but her voice is clear, full of passion, & it blends with the majestic musical wonderlands around her.
It is simply shocking as to why Texas has yet to break in the US mainstream scene, but after I purchased this record I quickly gathered every Texas recording possible. I only need their first two albums to complete my set.
This record to me, after gaining their other records, see's Texas at a musical, lyrical, & creative peak that wasn't matched or will be. The only record that could come close was 2003's follow-up "Careful What You Wish For".
This record manages to sound smart without being pretentious, accessible without being unoriginal.
I highly recommend that if you've heard of this group, that this or their "The Greatest Hits" album should be purchased first.
On a personal note, this record became one of the soundtracks to my life, defining 2004 for me in terms of friendship, romance, & life in general.
soulfullfilling music.......2004-08-15
Fabulous (obviously, it's Texas!).......2004-07-18
The album starts out strong with 'In Our Lifetime'. A pure pop track, it's upbeat, fun, and completely infectious. With simple, yet meaningful lyrics ("Understand that it is hard to tell you/That I've given all I have to give..."), it is among the best on the album. 'Tell Me The Answer' is one of my favourite songs off of 'The Hush'. The vocals are simply amazing, with Texas' lead singer, Sharleen Spiteri, singing in a voice so high it rivals that of the Brothers Gibb. The third track, 'Summer Son', contains not only a clever play on words, but also delicious lyrics, and a terrific uptempo beat. True to it's title, it's a great song for any summer soundtrack. The smooth sound of 'Sunday Afternoon' provides a steady transition from the uptempo tracks found closer to the begining of the album, to the more mature, relaxed tracks 'The Hush' fades into. The vocals are calming and beautiful, and they're suited perfectly for the song.
'Move In' is another of my favourite tracks on the album, and with good reason. Simply said, it's sexy, reminiscent, and absolutely flawless. The halfway point of the album is found in 'When We Are Together', and it's very well done. It starts out slowly before developing into a true upbeat, pop track. I find 'Day After Day' to be both soothing and sad. The music is relaxed and calming, but the lyrics refer to being away from a lover for too long a time. 'Zero Zero' is a short, well-done instrumental, and provides a great introduction for one of my all time favourite Texas songs, 'Saint'. With stunning lyrics ("...The meaning of me/Is something to pursue"), beautiful music, and fabulous vocals. It is, quite plainly, a masterpiece.
Nearing the end of the album, 'Girl' has a playful edge not found in the other songs. Although the album is pop-infused, this seems to be the standout upbeat track on 'The Hush'. The album's title track lives up to all that it should. Spiteri's voice is almost haunting in this brilliantly put together track. The lyrics are simple, as is the music. 'The Day Before I Went Away' is the last track and provides the perfect closure for the album. It's a slow, heavenly ballad that radiates so much emotion, and feeling.
'The Hush' is definitely an album worth checking out, especially if you're a pop music fan. If you haven't yet heard any of Texas' albums, well, what are you waiting for! This is one of the most talented, genius bands to come around in a long time, don't miss out on this amazing group.
