Not many expected this legendary outfit to have any pulse at all by 1990, much less a pulse throbbing so mightily. Fiery new lead and slide guitarist Warren Haynes is as suitable a replacement for Duane as you're likely to find, and new bassist Allen Woody takes a back seat to no one. Clearly, the new kids rejuvenated the weary veterans on this excellent offering, which kicks off the Allmans' second classic period. Seven Turns finds the band returning to form with its unmistakable twin-lead instrumentals, abrasive blues rock, and even the sunny Betts ballads. --Marc Greilsamer

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Singer Gregg Allman, guitarist Dickey Betts, and trap drummers Butch Trucks and Jai Jaimoe are tirelessly ambitious instigators who know how to fire up the old engines without being enslaved to recidivist tendencies. Three fresh faces have saddled up with the original members, yet everybody's playing modulates with assurance and without showiness. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

5 out of 5 stars The Comeback.......2007-04-04

The Allman Brothers Band reunited in 1989 to tour and the following year they went into the studio to record this comeback CD. A very welcome return that delights Peachheads! Higlights include Dickey Betts great title track, "Gamblers Roll", "Good Clean Fun",the instrumental "True Gravity", "Loaded Dice" and "It Ain't over yet".
This CD staked the band's claim to fans both old and new that they are still a major band. The great part is they are still staking that claim all these years later!

4 out of 5 stars WARREN HAYNES! .......2007-04-03

The Allmans are back. Okay, so they've been "back" for the past 16, 17 years. But what a way to begin the second phase of your career after being broken up for a decade (and losing Duane Allman - that's "God" to you). But yeah, Warren's the best guitarist to pass through the group since Duane. Okay, Dickey's a good guitarist, but he's COMPLETELY outclassed by Warren, as he was outclassed by Duane.
I think Seven Turns could've used a bit of editing, maybe - the title track is boring, overlong and limp, while Shine it On has all the emotional sincerity of a greeting card (for a sharp contrast, Where It All Begin's Soulshine). Still, more than enough of this is great - the obligatory long instrumental True Gravity is really, really cool; Gambler's Roll sounds like a bluesier Hendrix, and It Ain't Over Yet (Perhaps called so to show the reunion was no fluke?) is a funky blues. Good Clean Fun is just that, and Low Down Dirty Mean is vintage Allmans. This isn't a departure from the group's fusion of rock, blues, R&B and tinges of jazz, Latin and country, but I could care less. They've still got it, man, even to this day... check out their latest release, Hittin' the Note, which is just as good if not better. No, these aren't the Allmans of Eat a Peach and such but they've certainly aged well.

5 out of 5 stars The rejunvinated Allman Brothers Band...........2007-02-07

This is one of the Allman Brothers Band's best albums. After Brothers and Sisters, the Allmans released the uneven Win, Lose, or Draw, then they broke up. They reunited in 1979, put out the good Enlightened Rogues, but then put out the two worst albums of their career (Reach for the Sky and Brothers of the Road). They disbanded again. When Seven Turns came about, it was more than just a reunion album. The band had found itself again, and they came back with a powerful and moving album. The addition of Warren Haynes was a godsend, as he is the best guitarist they've had since Duane passed away all those years ago. The album has many great songs, like Good Clean Fun, Gambler's Roll, and the exquisite title track. This album was no fluke either. The Allmans went onto make 2 more great albums with this lineup, Shades of Two Worlds and Where It All Begins, and the subsequent tours were excellent, winning over tons of new fans (I saw them on this tour, and they were incredible). Great stuff...

4 out of 5 stars Their best since Brothers and Sisters.......2006-08-28

The Allman Brothers Band released their comeback album, Seven Turns, in 1990. The band was riding a wave of momentum as old fans were reminded of the band's powers with the release of their 4-CD box set retrospective, Dreams. In addition, a new whole audience discovered the band's greatness on their 1989 tour. Original members Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe were joined by guitarist Warren Haynes, keyboardist Johnny Neel, and bassist Allen Woody. The inclusion of both Haynes and Neel indicate an attempt to not only recreate the magic of the two-guitar lineup of Betts and Duane Allman but to also relive their popular Brothers and Sisters album in which Chuck Leavell's piano added another weapon to the band's impressive arsenal. The infusion of new blood is very apparent as the performances on Seven Turns show a classic band regaining their hunger. Allman certainly was feeling the vibe as his vocals on this album are arguably the best of his career. Whether it's on the smoking rocker "Good Clean Fun" or on the bluesy tracks "Low Down Dirty Mean" and "Gambler's Roll", Allman sounds reborn. "Let Me Ride" is a cool country rocker from Dickey Betts while "Shine It On" is a driving slice of southern rock. "True Gravity" is another strong jazz inflicted instrumental to add to their collection and is highlighted by Neel's impressive piano solo. The title track is a modern classic in the country rock vein with a memorable chorus and some cool slide guitar during the outro. The remaining tracks "It Ain't Over Yet" and "Loaded Dice" are also very good. All told, while Seven Turns is not on par with their best work, it's a very strong comeback and easily their best album since Brothers and Sisters.

4 out of 5 stars high quality band--high quality blues.......2006-08-15

nothing fancy here.just the blistering blues guitars and the Gregg Allman vocal growl we have come to expect--and that,my friends,is just fine.
Warren Haynes does an excellent Duane Allman musical
impersonation on the guitar--his lead vocal on 2 songs is
a little thin (picture Keith Richards singing "Happy") but it is OK in this context. this album will not recruit many new fans-
but those of us us already in the fold will enjoy having it.
at the time of this review--this disk was selling for a super
bargin price--(around $3.00) do not let the fact that it is inexpensive deter you from this one--you will
not be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Three great albums.......2004-04-10

This is not a box set in the traditional sense...there is nothing here which wasn't on the albums as they were originally issued, no new liner notes or bonus tracks or anything like that. It's merely three of the Allman Brothers Band's 90s albums in a cardbord box.
But if you're a fan of the band, and don't have any of these three CDs, this is a good way to acquire them. You'll even save something like fifty cents!

The two live albums are magnificent, the sound is great, the mix of old and new songs, hits and rarities, is excellent, and there are numerous highlights on both discs: "Get On With Your Life", "Soulshine", "Sailin' 'Cross The Devil's Sea", "Back Where It All Begins", the acoustic slide guitar blues "Midnight Blues", and the classic "Melissa".
"Seven Turns" isn't quite as immediately accesible, perhaps, but the Allmans' bluesy 1990 comeback album is definitely worth as listen as well. It features a number of really great songs, including "Good Clean Fun", "Low Down Dirty Mean", the hook-laden "It Ain't Over Yet", and the acoustic title track, and it is generally strong all the way through.

All in all, this is a great collection of music, well arranged, well produced, and superbly well played.
4 1/2 stars - highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd Set and Seven Turns are great... 1st Set not so great.......2003-06-10

The best disk of these three is 2nd Set, which is as good as anything the Allmans have released on record short of the Fillmore Concerts. The highlight is Back Where it All Begins, which is the best Dickey Betts jam I know of.

Seven Turns is a good disk as well, though very different than 2nd Set. Turns sounds more like a Lynyrd Skynyrd album (Skynyrd minus the rowdiness, that is) than an Allman Brothers album: it's radio-friendly stuff, more tune-oriented and less jam-oriented.

As for 1st Set I can't say I enjoyed it much. The band had only been back together for a couple of years when they played the concerts these takes come from, and they hadn't found their groove by then as far as I'm concerned. But a couple of the tracks are all right and if you're a serious enough Allmans fan to be buying Seven Turns, you'll want to have 1st Set as well. Besides, buying these discs in the three-pack here is like buying 2nd Set and Turns and getting 1st Set for free.

5 out of 5 stars Great deal.......2001-02-25

These are three CD's from the early to mid-nineties. They are packaged together at a low price. If you don't already own one of these CD's, then this is a great deal. All three CD's are excellent.

In 1989, the Allman Brothers reformed, adding Allen Woody on bass and Warren Haynes on guitar. The addition of Haynes was great. Instead of being just another sideman or soloist, he became an important part of the band. He wrote some great songs and added new depth to the group. They recorded three studio albums, "Seven Turns", "Shades of Two Words" and "Where It All Belongs". "Shades of Two Worlds" was their best studio album since "Brothers and Sisters". Unfortunately, it is not available. "Seven Turns" is a nice substitute.

The titles of the two live CD's is misleading. They are not the 1st and 2nd sets of the same show. The 1st set was from 1991 while the 2nd set was from 1994.

I was worried that these live CD's wouldn't be any good. It would be another case of a dinosaur band milking the old hits and playing inferior new songs. But this is a complete surprise. The old songs are played in new and exciting ways. Southbound is played funky and there are interesting guitar duets in Blue Sky and Melissa. Jessica is a free form jam with bits of Mountain Jam thrown in. There is even an accoustic version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. And the new material is fantastic, especially Back Where It All Belongs and Nobody Knows.

After this, Haynes and Woody left the group to concentrate on their side project, Gov't Mule. Their CD "With a Little Help From Our Friends" is fantastic, especially the limited edition 4 CD set. Allen Woody died last year and Warren Haynes is playing with Phil Lesh and Friends. The Allman Brothers have reformed with Butch Trucks' nephew on guitar and Dickie Betts has been kicked out of the band.

3 out of 5 stars New Readers Digest Package?.......2000-06-22

These are excellent songs but albums are still available. I really find this idea totally wretched.

5 out of 5 stars Great CDs, Great Price.......2000-06-14

All three of these CDs are amazing. The sound is great, the performances are great. It is almost as amazing as the Duane/Berry era. Above all you are practicly getting three CDs for the price of two! That is a deal!
