5 out of 5 stars A terrific collection of Sousa pieces.......2006-06-09

John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was one of America's best known composers. And he composed a wide variety of works, mostly for wind band. As a wind band member, I've played many of his marches.

You won't have any difficulty finding albums of Sousa's marches. But what about the rest of his works? This fine album includes a few and the Nonpareil Wind Band, under the direction of Timothy Foley, does an excellent job of playing them.

If I had to choose just eight of Sousa's pieces in order to introduce an audience to Sousa, here is what I would select:

El Capitan
Sound Off
With Pleasure
The Crusader
The Free Lance
The Gladiator
Semper Fidelis
The Fairest of the Fair

As you can see, half of these eight pieces are on this disc. You'll have to look elsewhere to find the others.

I highly recommend this excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars A Grand Sousa Concert, Indeed.......2005-01-31

I'll come right out and say it. I love John Philip Sousa. I find his work addictive, joyous, and often very surprising. This is an album that explains why - it's perfectly arranged and performed, and the selections included could not be any better.

First of all, it's important for folks new to Sousa to understand that no, sir - he didn't compose only marches. Rather a shame that nowadays those are almost exclusively what he's legendary for - they are gems, indeed, but there's far more to the man than what we so often hear in high school bands, hometown parades and national events. Sousa could charm us with playful foxtrots, delight us with unique tangos, caress the ears with heavenly waltzes, and humor us with whimsical cakewalks. Thank goodness this album proves this truth.

Appropriately, the Great American Main Street Band plays each piece with strength, elan and respect - it doesn't get any better. The finest selections include "The Pathfinder of Panama" - a truly rousing march; "The Gliding Girl" - a tango, dedicated to his daughter, Priscilla); "The Presidential Polonaise" - a most noble dance; "La Reine de la Mer" - one of my favorite waltzes, so lovely; and "With Pleasure" - a cakewalk in the most deleriously fanciful fashion. Of course, each piece amongst these stong points is just wonderful, as well.

In all, this is just a flat out great album. Required listening for newly-minted Sousa fans, as well as members of the Old Guard - that would include me. It's a joy to hear, and will become a frequent resident in your CD shuffler - I guarantee that.

4 out of 5 stars Thumbs up.......2003-02-05

Good, crisp rendering of a fine selection of Sousa pieces. Conductor Timothy Foley is well respected.

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Via the Royal Artillery!.......2004-11-28

This is promising new series. Keith Brian, known for his spirited versions of Sousa with his New Sousa Band leads here the reknowned band of the Royal Regiment of Artillery from the UK. As the premiere band of the British army, tracing its history back to 1747, this full-sized 49 member band can give Sousa the full power he needs! While many marches are well known, this series promises to explore the lesser known as well. Included are many obscure marches, as well as novelty pieces, hymns, dances, etc. All go to show what a truly versatile composer Sousa was. He deserves to be better known. His music spanned many aspects, and it is quite possible to program a complete band concert on his varied works alone. Naxos deserves much credit for launching this inspired project to record has many varied works. The sound quality for such a budget price is truly great. Hats off to Keith Brian, the band of the Royal Artillery, and Naxos!

5 out of 5 stars A lot of great concert band music for a little money!.......2001-10-22

This is a great recording if you enjoy concert band music and/or Sousa! I especially enjoyed hearing the lesser-known marches and non-marches - Sousa wrote suites, operettas, and more, and they are all very enjoyable. All of these are well-performed and recorded and will have you tapping your foot. A wonderful and inexpensive series (see Volume 2, too!).

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Sampler, and the Best Place to Start.......2006-01-24

If you're unfamiliar with Nyman and want a broad overview of his best work, I'd start here. I actually WORE OUT a copy of this and recently bought another. When it arrived, I played it over and over-- Nyman's almost creepily insistent and precise compositions will appeal to those who appreciate minimalism and repetition in the music of other composers such as John Adams, Steve Reich, Michael Torke, and Philip Glass.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Nyman RULES !.......2004-07-22

I thought there was nothing beyond Philip Glass, Steve Reich or John Adams. Suddenly, for some strange reason I bought this CD. It far exceeded my expectations.

Nyman is a excelent composer, his music is fast-paced, joyful and delicious.

I recomend this CD for anyone who is looking for a great minimalist composer.

5 out of 5 stars Sensations mosaic.......2004-03-31

Today I was talking with a friend about the rainbow of feelings "Memorial" awakes in my mind. I consider this song like the exact opposite of easy-listening music, a feeling catalyst, a vehicle that can raise you to the sky and gradually take you to the deepest level in hell. As derrotista said, it is perfect to describe the meaning of a word like "death", but more than that, with an inevitability emphasis.

The rest of the compilation also honors the meaning of intensity. No one song in this disc will let your attention go away from the sensations mosaic this record constructs. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good start to meet Nyman.......2004-03-05

I was a great enthusiast of new age and minimalist music in the early 90's, when I was still a teenager. I had this as one of my favourite albums and today I consider it one of my best purchases.

Ten years later, Nyman is recognised as one of the biggest composers of late XXth century. In part with the astonishing soundtrack of "The Piano". But I think this "Essential" album has more to offer to you.

Of course, my favourite is "Memorial". It is the most tragic music I have ever listened. It's a perfect track to describe what a word like "death" can mean. "Miserere Paraphrase" is the definition of another simple word: "pain".

Some other tracks are the purity of minimalism: "Knowing the Ropes", "Chasing Sheep is best left to Shepherds", "Wheelbarrow Walk" and "The Garden is Becoming a Robe Room" are of my favourites.

Why am I not giving it five stars? The reason: "Prospero's Books: Miranda". It is a bad way to end this album. Almost the whole album is devoted to Greenaway films: "The Draughtsman Contract", "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover", "A Zed and Two Noughts" and "Drowning by Numbers" and the referred "Prospero's Books". The only track not belonging to a film is Stroking-Synchronising, from "Water Dances" album. This is a tremendous composition and should be the great finale for this album. "Miranda" is a dull and not creative composition, which Nyman doesn't have to be proud of it: it is too complex, too changing and breaks with the minimalist spirit. I also think the soprano and the mezzo don't play a "serious" part.

But of course, it has an honour place in my discography.

2 out of 5 stars The Emperor's New Music.......2002-04-11

A lot of people seem to love this guy and I just don't see why. I find it dull, intellectual (in the most pejorative sense) and defines what's wrong with a lot of "post-modernism" in music today. This guy doesn't write tunes as much as he writes concepts of tunes. The music fails to connect on an emotional level and fails to be interesting enough in purely intellectual terms to compensate for it's emotional hollowness. His craft seems a bit lacking too- filled with the trappings of minimalism without the basic musical values such as memorable melodies, logical harmony and innovative form that make a composer such as John Adams worth listening to. His often odd choices of orchestration tend to strike one as merely grotesque rather than imaginative. I'm afraid that Michael Nyman is a musical poseur and it's a shame that so many people have bought into his brand of soulless artifice.
Not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best work.......2007-02-08

There are a few really great songs on here, but it's not the best work they've done.

5 out of 5 stars Closing Out the Decade.......2006-12-05

Even though this album was released in 1992 it was really an end to a-ha's output of the 80's. There are some great tunes here reminiscent of their glory days but there is also a new feel and direction evident. In all this is a good album from them.

4 out of 5 stars Last of the classic A-ha.......2005-03-28

This album, though made during the early days of the stripping down period of their career, still contains traces of the original songwriting formula they used on the earlier classics. Even though by this time the keyboards were notably absent, at least there were still some cool drum machine loops going on. "Cold as stone" has a cool repeating loop that sticks with you. This one is as dark as their first album, maybe darker. The piano used here has a very "Doors" sound to it. The band admits to being influenced by that band and it does show.

"Dark is the night" was a great single, catchy riff, meaningful structure and singing despite only a little organ sound from the 'boards. All the other songs have a darker "Here I stand.." or "Love is reason" feel to them. "Lie down in darkness" has a cool groove to it and cool background vocals that force you to sing along. This is about the last album where all the tracks sound distinctive, despite the lack of 'boards throughout the album. Well worth owning if you're a classic A-ha fan or if you just want to hear something different.

    4 out of 5 stars Dark Delight.......2005-01-31

A suprise change after their "East of the Sun" album. I like how it has such a dark, melancholy feel. The vocals are striking and sincere. The guitar work is simple, but effective. This album won't cheer you up, but it will keep you company during the darker, pensive periods in life. I am a huge AHA fan, and I think this is their best album!

    4 out of 5 stars Haunting memories.......2004-07-05

I was a young teen in 1993, grunge was in full force, I would listen to bands like Screaming Trees, Tad, Paw and ofcourse the mighty Nirvana. Then I fell in love with a girl from Norway and she was into this band A-HA. This album came out and what I thought I would hate became an album that has stayed in my collection since 1993 and that always brings out a melancholic side to a day. Even as I sit here in this beautifull warm day in summer, as Memorial Beach comes out of the speakers I am taken back to a time when everything was so much more simple and innocent. Be it "Memorial beach" haunting piano and chorus, or "Angel in the Snow", with its hearfelt lyrics and romantic guitar, this album is all around solid. Not being an old school A-HA fan or anything, I cant compare it to other albums or anything, but as a lover of good music I strongly recomend this album. It just has all the elements that make an album great such as amazing lyrics, in that the music actually reaches inside and touches you. Anyway, once again I recomend this album, you wont regret it.
