This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:

This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

The title turned out to be prophetic, as Tritt's career took off after the release of this CD. Though it followed the same formula of its predecessor (a couple of romantic ballads, a Southern-rocker & a few up-tempo country tunes), the formula DOES work. Highlights include the huge radio hits "Here's a Quarter" & "Anymore", as well as Tritt's duet with Marty Stuart, "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'". Southern rock fans will love the scorching "Homesick" which closes things out.

While her vocals are great (and very reminiscent of a blend of Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan) and I did expect a collection of songs from the heart of a parent, I was disappointed to find language that would require a bar of soap in a household of children. I can't play this when my kids are around! What's the point in that?

I discovered Kath Fisher on itunes and fell in love with her album "One". Her voice is truly her instrument, so controlled and multi-layered, soulful and capable of long notes and belts. She has a good range, with shades of Tori, Alanis, but with a deep tone that makes her truly unique. Her lyrics are cool, with an enunciation that makes them understandable. Her tunes are catchy, but not your typical radio pop, though I have heard her on San Diego radio. Standouts include "I will love you" on ONE; I love "Beautiful Life" which you may recognize from the Toyota commerical; and "The Lovely Years" from the new album of the same name. I actually have all of her albums, and all songs are just great. UPPERS AND DOWNERS is an album of 1/2 quick tempo songs and 1/2 slower songs, with lots of covers, including a cool version of "Dream On". If you are looking for a great, but for some reason undiscovered in the mainstream true talent, you can't go wrong with Fisher. Why isn't this girl famous?

I love Fisher's music, and bought this the day it came out. The music is good, but I was a little disappointed that the theme for the album was about how wonderful it is to be parents. Not that babies aren't wonderful, they are, but if you aren't a new parent you may not relate well to this album and True North would be a better pick.

new moms will be particularly attracted to the pretty songs. the lullaby "you" is especially nice -- one of only two Lullaby songs to actually make me weepy-eyed thinking about my wee one (who is now 8) (the other song was "baby mine" by alison krauss)

her voice is as lush and memorable as ever, and the music and arrangements are even better than on previous works.

stand outs other than "you": "all i ask" "beautiful day" "sleepy head" "lovely years" "turn around" and "be here".

good stuff! cd universe has the cd for $3 cheaper. i guess amazon gets their shipping cost one way or another.....

a classic.......2006-07-21

When I was a lad of the age of 16, my friend made a mix CD for me. On this CD were several songs that I knew. There was "When I Come Around" by Green Day, "Total Bummer" by NOFX, several blink-182 songs, and then there were a few I didn't know. Two of those songs were "Hit and Miss" and "It Never Snows In Florida." Yes, I realize that those songs are not on this CD, but that was my first introduction to New Found Glory. Of course, back then they were just changing from A New Found Glory to New Found Glory. Their self-titled CD had just been release that year. What I heard was from Nothing Gold Can Stay. There wasn't all the hype from "My Friends Over You" or "All Downhill From Here." It was just a bunch of guys playing music. Jordan couldn't sing great, and the rest couldn't play perfectly, but they loved what they did. I think the best song on here is "Standstill." It's beautiful. But this CD is what it is, nothing more or less. It's not suger-coated pop-punk. It's not rebel-from-your-parents punk rock. And it's definately not cut your wrists hardcore. It's what New Found Glory has always been: a bunch of guys playing music and having fun. Just because it's poorly recorded doesn't mean it's any worse than Catalyst. That's why I love NFG. No matter how big they get, they'll still answer your emails on myspace, they'll still talk to you like you're just as good as them, they're still normal guys who just happen to be in a band. This CD is a brilliant piece of history. If you love NFG like me, or if you just like them like most of my friends, this CD is a must: a classic.

good if u havent heard the others.......2005-01-27

this album is pretty good but not new found glory at there best, as its 1 of there 1st albums then no-one would expect it to be there best work. this is pretty good for a debut album. if youve heard catalyst,new found glory and sticks and stones then you most probably wont be pleased with this album. but you can still tell its new found glory and there are a few classic nfg tracks on here. 6/10

This cd is soooo freakin awesome you don't have to be a diehard fan to like it i'm not a diehard fan and i like it just as much it is definetly like Blink-182's buddah i dont know why people hate it just because it doesn't sound as polished as their newer stuff it doesnt mean it's a bad cd and it also has ferris bueller lines throughout the songs and that is one of my favorite 80's movies thats awesome so whoever thinks this cd is crap well then they need to shove off because what can you expect for their first cd it's pretty awesome compared to what some people can do.

This CD is worth buying for its version of the Hokey Pokey alone. Everything else is just a bonus. Kids love it. Great to use with adults as well. Fun, fun, fun. I've owned it on cassette tape for years, and am finally upgrading. Getting a copy for my sister as well.

I used to use this CD for music and movement time with my preschoolers with and without disabilities. It was a real favorite! Now, my two year old son loves it as well. Hokey Pokey, Old MacDonald, and You Keep Knockin' were especially preferred by both audiences!!

Great for kids; okay for adults........2001-08-27

This album was a great surprise for Little Richard fans back in '92: since '79 there had been just one album of new recordings by the Quasar ["Lifetime Friend" for Warner Bros./WEA in '86]. The packaging loked fine and the song selection pertinent. What was missing on every track was a truly committed, strong vocal - since his mid to late '80s "Comeback" his voice has not always been dependable, and unfortunately on this session he didn't have it. In addition, the mix is very light, obviously with small children in mind. For example, "Keep a Knockin'", a nice arrangement featuring children's voices, lacks the kind of power the "older kid" wants. Probably the best tracks for all listeners are "Hokey Pokey", with its driving piano, and "Old MacDonald", a near-classic. My-my-my-my!

OH Golly! Your children will be shaking their shoes, Losing their blues and turning those frowns into smiles again. Have an only child, a lonely child? a bored child, a sad child, a happy child, a creative child, an out going child, or have a child in you? This is the music of all music to introduce or refresh the musical ambiance in your familys life. Need to inject the children with a phonagraph needle to liven things up a bit. This is the way to go. One of my all time favorites. From my two year old to my teenager and everyone in between This is the appetizer, main meal and desert all rolled up into one. Have fun with this , because there is just no way to avoid it.

This is an exuberantly high energy kids cd. You will not believe the way your kids dance to Little Richard's music and laugh at his jokes. This cd deserves a lot more publicity!

I bought this album when it was released in 1971 in the U.S. under the title of "Tobacco Road". The cover art depicted a pipe, and (heh,heh) I don't think the reference was to tobacco. At the time, it was just a record company's attempt to capitalize on the success of a band by releasing the back catalogue.

"It's All About" is kind of a grab-bag of late 60's psychedelia and it reveals a lot of charms in a band you don't usually associate with subtlety. This reissue, with bonus tracks, improves the sound tremendously over the LP version, and the music is revitalized by the improved mix. Greg Ridley's bass guitar really benefits--he sounds better here, and more inventive, than he ever did with Humble Pie.

Highlights include "Society's Child" (the weepy Janis Ian tune done in a Vanilla Fudge style arrangement), the dirge-like "Here I Lived So Well", and the song "(I Think I'm Going)Weird", which is the kind of 'nugget' that deserves inclusion in the cd collections of the real devotees of FREAKBEAT.

Spooky Tooth carried on and made the solid album "Spooky Two", but the over-the-top, Righteous Brothers meet Led Zeppelin formula began to wear thin. "It's All About" catches Spooky Tooth when the formula wasn't quite in place... it features a lot of experimentation, and is similar in feel to another album Jimmy Miller produced, Traffic's debut album "Mr. Fantasy". Dreamy confections from long ago, yours to taste again--if you wish.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
