"Utterly sublime"

Product Description
For a pint-sized scruff, Manchester's John Bramwell has a hell of a way with words, a voice like a fallen angel, and a genius for penning twisted torch songs laced with gorgeous melodies. The NME called their 2001 debut "Natural History", "a mystical, rapturous, staggering declaration of love." This, their second album, has raised the bar for the band.

Another incredibly talented band from Manchester. How is is possible for one obscure city to produce so much diverse richness in an otherwise barren musical landscape?

Portishead, Massive Attack, Morcheeba.... and I Am Kloot.

Despite the rather unusual group name, I Am Kloot contains some highly talented musicians, keyed by the brilliant lyricist John Bramwell. Top to bottom this is a listenable, often gripping album with layers of musical substance. For me, standout tracks include "From Your Favorite Sky, "Strange Arrangement," and "Sold As Seen."

The final stunningly lyrical track, "Same Deep Water as Me," is not a tune to hear if you're slightly depressed about something. An incredibly moving track with a swinging beat, lovely use of orchestration, and the devastating line "Drench your soul in the water... cleanse your heart of the stain" that sounds like nothing so much as an embrace of the end of life. Some of the most beautiful lyrics anyone has recently written, and a song I for one will always remember.

5 out of 5 stars Best I Am Kloot album from the trilogy.......2005-07-09

Bizarre that this is the only I Am Kloot album actually available in the U.S. the first and most recent one are only available on import. But the good thing is this is the best album of the 3. After debut album "Natural History"'s laid back acoustic feel what was the be expected for their 2nd album? Probably not what they delivered.

Much more sonically heavier than the first album, but without any noisey guitar, the heaviness comes from the production and use more of keyboards and reverb. Songs like "Untitled #1", "Life In A Day" and "Cuckoo" all demonstrate the louder and darker side of this Manchester 3-piece, whereas "Here For The World", "Not A Reasonable Man" and "Mermaids" are sparse in arrangement and sublimely relaxing, the first of which has some nice piano playing.

Not to forget the 2 best songs on the album "Proof" a song resurrected from an old b-side demo and recorded much better than the demo that is perfectly catchy and a beautiful song, the 2nd of the 2 is the epic "The Same Deep Water As Me" all I can say is wow! The epitomy of an emotionally charged song.

An album of not one weak song "From Your Favourite Sky" and "3 Feet Tall" were both singles and both great songs and "Sold As Seen" could easily have been the 5th single from this album.

Everyone who I recommended this to from the U.S. has never been dissapointed, are you?

5 out of 5 stars This is totally brilliant.......2005-02-08

I Am Kloot are a cool band with a strange name from Manchester. They are a trio a little like the scene that Elbow, Alfie, and Badly Drawn Boy come from. Maybe a little more folksy and psychedelic. The lead singer, John Bramwell, seems really unique. The songs "Untitled #1" and "From Your Favourite Sky" are old school mellow that sound totally original. "Life In A Day" is more rocking like The Verve or Oasis. "Mermaids" sounds creepy like Roy Orbison. Most of these songs are just wonderful and beyond description. John Bramwell seems to be a sort of songwriter like Richard Ashcroft or Damon Gough, who only shows up on the scene once every ten years. Every song on this album is gold. I can't believe that people listen to bands that are just okay like Damien Rice or Gomez, when there is something far better, like this, I Am Kloot. This is chill out music. This is music to view the world by. This is makeout music. This is party music. This is everything that you would want. This is one of the records of the year. Check it out now when no one ones about them!

5 out of 5 stars the finest of the nu britpop records.......2005-01-30

I Am Kloot are the finest of all the nu britpop bands. You can take your Coldplay and Starsailor and shove it right up your "arse" because this band is where it's at. With their self-titled sophmore album they release an extremely consitant record that will probably do unnoticed in the States, but should definitely be purchased by any fan of exceptional songwriting. The opening 1-2-3 punch of "Untitled #1", "Your Favourite Skies", and "Life in a Day" alone make this album worth purchasing. It's in these three songs that you get a basic idea of what I Am Kloot is capable of. "Untitled #1" has the perfect mesh of a lilting piano line, spanish tinged guitar, very solid drumming, and relaxed vocals to make for a very wonderful piece of light pop. "Your Favorite Skies" manages to repeat most of what the previous song accomplishes in style, but adds a soaring chorus to the mix. "Life in a Day" just rocks. It opens with a rumbling drum riff and is soon accompanied by a dirgy bass line and the lead singers eerie vocal line.

All in all a very excellent record and definitely worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars Unique addition to the trilogy.......2006-05-17

Their 3rd album takes us in a different direction again compared to the previous 2. It seems to have taken a quirky and darker route almost, with the exception of "Over My Shoulder" the upbeat lead single from the album (also I Am Kloots highest charting single too!!!). The production on "Gods And Monsters" is semi-lo-fi and natural, using microphones placed in the corner of a ceiling to get the right sound for a guitar part among other things. "Avenue Of Hope" is one of the stand out tracks and features a beautiful trumpet solo and classic Kloot lyrics, "Coincidence" is one of the darker moments and the band used to open their live shows with this song. Amongst these tracks there are real Kloot classics such as "The Stars Look Familiar", "I Believe" and "Astray" which could be called a relation to "No Fear Of Falling" from their debut album.

3 star rating in comparison to their other 2 albums, it is not the best, but it is not terrible either and is a welcome addition to my collection... I play it regularly still a year on.

1 out of 5 stars Is This The Same Band?.......2005-10-27

I read all of the negative reviews for this album and thought, "It can't be that bad, their first two albums were really good." Well, it is that bad. In fact, it's a complete disaster and it makes you wonder where the old I Am Kloot went. Where their self-titled second album took a while to reveal its charms, this one just doesn't have any charms to reveal. It's utterly forgettable and actually almost painful to listen to.

Don't get me wrong, I think a lot of this band. However, potential buyers need to be aware that this effort stinks. There are only maybe one or two songs on here that you would actually want to listen to more than once. Give it a chance if you like, but there's a strong possibility that you will be severly underwhelmed. One review I read of this album somewhere described it as sounding like a bunch of Badly Drawn Boy knock-offs. If only.

5 out of 5 stars Gods From Manchester.......2005-10-21

5 out of 5 stars The thrill of Britpop; the precision of French chanson........2005-10-12

I can hardly believe this is the same band who released that clattery, unremarkable debut album. I almost didn't give this a chance but this is a perfect set of songs. The lyrics are devious, supple and permit entry into unusual psychological states and revelations, much like the recent Ladytron album but in an orchestral-folk setting. John Bramwell, Kloot's frontman, is usually smart enough not to directly tackle issues in his own life, choosing instead to unspool ambiguous stories that indirectly reference the disappointment and paranoia of betrayed love, among other subjects. And these stories are better than anything you'll read in The New Yorker. "An Ordinary Girl" feels like the classic, with its noir lyrics smartly reminding us that femme fatales don't have to sport come-hither looks and elbow-length black gloves; they can be our slightly pimply, not so slim, insecure first loves, and what makes them truly fatale is that we once trusted them. "Gods and Monsters" seems simple, but is the most ambiguous song, burrowing into the head of a petty-proud office dweller who suddenly realizes that his idea of an ordered, rational life in a godless world has been a huge lie, that there are others, his superiors, "So lazy and so useless and so good." ( A line that I take as a huge compliment, by the way. ) "Strange Without You" is a kind of fuzzed-out polka where Bramwell's voice sounds just a mite higher-pitched and unfamiliar as he sings the title. "Sand and Glue" is unfathomable but has a propulsive bridge that sneakily becomes the chorus; it seems to have something to do with someone overprivileged who abuses nature just because he can. "Coincidence" has the great copout line, "Time has gathered us here by coincidence / That's why what I say doesn't make any sense." "Dead Men's Cigarettes" is a great song to drive around and smoke to.

If there's anything I can level against this album, it's that Bramwell doesn't have the persona to sell his more confessional songs. He's a good songwriter, but not an oracle. When he goes all John Lennon with an acoustic guitar on "Astray," the melody is catchy, but it feels like he hasn't earned the right to whisper in our collective ear. I don't know why this is, any more than I know why some actors are magnetic and some are dead weight. And the actor that Bramwell resembles most is Peter Sellers. He needs a role to inhabit for us to care; he's not one of those actors who can play variations on himself.

5 out of 5 stars Another great album.......2005-09-10

I Am Kloot has put out a few cool albums. They are part of the scene in Manchester. John Bramwell is a talented songwriter. Their first self-titled album released here was an amazing feat. It was full of hits. I was shocked to hear this new one. I bought the single "Over My Shoulder." It surprises me. It sounded more relaxed and subtle. Some of the epic songs of the past were replaced by some intimate stories-songs on this one. There are songs which are deceptively plain like "An Ordinary Girl' and "No Direction Home." There are some atmospheric songs. There is more meandering. There is more of a folk vibe on this one. Bramwell has become one of the new British songwriters who are something like John Lennon. This is great music, it is deep and moving, and it deserves a wider audience.

...cos nobody here deserves you."
The first line from the song 'To You' and the opening line of the album 'Natural History.' That flavor and wit flow throughout this clever, melodic album. If U2 or Radiohead made a folk album with a dark sense of humor they would be I Am Kloot. Each song is a melody and story in itself, but also adds beautifully to the album as a whole.
I first learned of the band when author Neil Gaiman mentioned them in his online journal, and am so glad as 'Natural History' is one of the best albums of 2001. Take a chance you won't regret it. Preview tracks and video at their website iamkloot.com. A quick listen will leave you hooked. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Give It A Chance.......2005-03-12

I'll admit that I was initially pretty disappointed with this album. I had accidently picked up Natural History and thought it was excellent so when I read a couple of glowing reviews for this, I couldn't wait to hear what they had come up with. The songs don't grab you at first as much as they did on Natural History and on a first couple of listens the album as a whole seems to drag because it is very ballad-heavy. However, repeated listens reveal an album much more accomplished than their first effort. The song-writing is first rate and I would recommend this to any fan of good music, especially lovers of fine British music.

2 out of 5 stars very dissapointing.......2004-08-24

I bought this album after hearing the single 'from your favourite sky'. After having listened to the full album, i was just very dissapointed. 'I am kloot' is just a very poor effort and it is nothing special. It just keeps dragging on and doesn't grab your attention as a good record should. Apart from the single 'from your favourite sky', all the other tracks should have been left of the record! The Dutch press should be ashamed for describing this as 'the best new thing from Britain'; it certainly isn't! Don't waste your hard-earned money on it!

5 out of 5 stars I Love Kloot.......2003-11-21

I Am Kloot's self-titled sophomore album confirms that this british indie-pop trio is the next big thing. The album has no weak point and every singel song could be a number one hit. My personal favorites are: From You Favourite Sky & Not a Reasonable Man.

The lyrics are brilliant and exellent performed by singer John Bramwell. The sound of the record are more mature than their debut, Natural History, and makes more sense in a way. Creating a masterpiece on its second try, I Am Kloot is earmarked as one of the most interesting bands of its time. Are you ready for it?

4 out of 5 stars Fresh sounding new Kloot material.......2006-05-17

Considering it is only 2 songs and is an import I am sad it couldn't be bought for the UK price which would be around $5. But alas it is what it is. So I shall attempt to represent it fairly.

After leaving the label that released I Am Kloots last 2 albums, and the singles that came from those, the band found themselves out in the wilderness. So they decided to go to the studio with 2 members of Elbow producing and came away with "Maybe I Should" and "Strange Little Girl" and a brand new single. The title track is very upbeat and uplifting with lyrics that are slightly tongue in cheek like "Maybe we can... y'know?" the song definitely is a great I Am Kloot song and shows us just why we love them in the first place. The other song on this single is "Strange Little Girl" a solo song played on acoustic guitar and as quiet as can be, delivered in an English folk style and would not look out of place on any of the bands early material. As the first song is upbeat and full this song is very sparse and quiet, it is like you get both sides of a coin with this cd.

For the completist it is not money spent un-wisely... but for those who just want the song then I would go spend a couple of bucks on a legal download.

Also included on the DVD is a Band Interview and three music videos to 'Life in a Day', '3 Feet Tall' and 'From Your Favourite Sky'.
