Floating in on the last wings of Britpop, this Southern California band named after a Northern California college town (or singer James Grundler's nursery school, depending on who you ask) is out of time and out of step. Yet, they create some of the dreamiest pop to emerge on the U.S. side of the pond in recent years. Winsome, anguished, and brainy, paloalto conjures up the spirit of both Pink Floyd and Radiohead in their introspective epics of triumph and self-determination. Gorgeous, buzzing guitars, sleight-of-hand drumming, and extravagant instrumentation create a lush, swelling wall of sound from which Grundler's fragile voice emerges like a ghostly specter, chiseling out affirmations and grave pronouncements with a haunted gentility. --Jaan Uhelszki

Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup sure know how to pick 'em. Their Heroes & Villains might be the coolest soundtrack of the summer of 2000, as well as the best repellant for Townsville's evil monkey, Mojo Jojo. Inspired by the Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls series, this delicious disc delivers a handful of exceptional contemporary pop-rock tunes customized especially for the occasion. And the music's so good that it may supersede the cartoon itself. Produced by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob Casale, with fave groups picked by Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, Heroes & Villains has nary a clunker in its bunch. Disc highlights include the Beatles-like "Walk and Chew Gum" (Optiganally Yours), Komeda's killer "B.L.O.S.S.O.M.," Apples in Stereo's hook-infested "Signal in the Sky (Let's Go," Shonen Knife's hard-edged "Buttercup (I'm A Super Girl)," and a fun story thread that runs between songs. Of course there's Devo's own simian cheer lead, "Go Monkey Go," clearly another de-evolutionary breakdown at the hands of the mindless monkey Mojo. Play it again and again at maximum power. --Martin Keller

Heroes and Villians is everything I hoped it would be, and more.
It's the perfect PowerPuff Girls soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD..........2007-05-26

I bought this for my niece for her birthday. She absolutely loves it. The music is great.

4 out of 5 stars Superb Soundtrack.......2006-08-19

The three young superheroines star in this amazing audio adventure where they save the day and play a little music, too. There are songs like "Go Monkey Go" by Devo, "The Fight" by Cornelius, "Walk and Chew Gum" by Optanganally Yours, "I'm a Super Girl" by Shonen Knife(they kinda sound like Puffy Ami Yumi), and of course, "The Signal in the Sky" by The Apples in Stereo. Note that some of those aformentioned songs became really neat music videos on Cartoon Network. Each song surprisingly goes along with the storyline, which is even neater. Also stay tuned on the final track, because of a hidden song will eventually play based on the "Mime for a Change" episode(as seen on "Cartoon Network Christmas Volume 2: Christmas Rocks" DVD).

They say that the Powerpuff Girls Rock and this soundtrack happens to prove it !

5 out of 5 stars Makin' a better day through the power of music!.......2004-10-16

This CD is just incredible! The genre style is dream pop-indie. Songs like "Bubbles" by Dressy Bessy, "Don't Look Down" by The Sugarplastic, and "Signal in the Sky (Let's Go!)" by The Apples in Stereo, will wake you up with it's healing power if you're down, as well as float you away to the clouds if you're tense. Either way, the majority of songs here are powerful and plain irresistable. This is also stuff you'd really want your kids to listen to.

It has credibility whether you really are a kid with a sweet tooth for infectious music or an alienated teen like I was when I fell in love with this record. "Fight the Power" by Bis and "The Fight" by Cornelius are highly danceable and fully forced pop and techno, "B.L.O.S.S.O.M." by Komeda and "Pray for the Girls" by Frank Black are two more choice tracks which both give a kick and are very thoughtful or a little brooding. And finally "Friends Win" by Bill Doss has an interesting 80's sound to it that reminds me of Human League and/or Haircut 100.

I didn't care for "Walk & Chew Gum" by Optiganally Yours or "Go Monkey Go!" by Devo, but they're good songs.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous and fun!.......2004-06-20

My husband bought this when it first came out because my daughter loved the Powerpuff Girls. I have to say that it is one of my favorite CDs and I am not a big music fan. It is so much fun to listen to as a kid or adult even the music is more for adults than kids.

Im kinda behind on writing this, but Ive enjoyed this record so much. The guys voice is so pleasing to the ears, although kinf of grinding on some songs. Sleeping citizens is one of the best songs Ive heard in awhile. Simple but you can feel it so well. This is just a good rock album.

5 out of 5 stars They are ridiculously underrated.......2006-01-13

They are now a new band, known as "golden state". Don't get confused, there is already a band out there known as golden state that is horrendous. These guys are the best below radar band I've come across in so long. I strongly recommend you go see them live, they are unabelievably talented...and talk about an unreal singing voice. I wish I could give these guys 6 stars. BUY THIS CD.

5 out of 5 stars Love This Band.......2005-11-12

I love Palo Alto and their songs. They are way better then Coldplay. They maybe lesser known then Coldplay but they are definitely better. I first heard Palo Alto on the Daredevil Soundtrack with the song Fade Out/In. It made me by this CD and as I listened to their songs I fell in love with their songs and their ability to create great music. Not boring music that makes you want to fall asleep like Coldplay in which all their songs sound the same, Palo Alto is able to make the difference between songs that makes them great musicians unlike Coldplay who plays the same things over and over.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2005-10-21

This album is a complete undiscovered gem. It takes you on a personal journey with intimate and sometimes haunting lyrics. This guy has a really smooth voice that carries well with the style of his music. Highly recommended.

Found Colm Heaney while looking for any versions of "Dancing in the Moonlight", and here it was. I never heard of this Dublin based singer/songwriter. The sound is kind of pop, but surprisingly with a bite that shows you this guy has the sound coming from his heart. I would give it a try and give it to a friend, you won't regret it.

    Album Description

Instrumental rock fueled by Latin beats and explosive guitar. "Heroes and Villains" was recorded in my bedroom in about seven hours. I actually had all the songs written by January of 2002, but I decided I hated them all so I deleted them all and started over. I then spent the next six months or so writing new songs. Then, on a cold October day, I sat down and recorded all the guitar parts. Finally, I took the entire mess up to Binary Studios in Bellingham and had it mixed/mastered.

The result is an album that I am very excited about. I love every song on this album. Each one has a special meaning to me, and I came away from the experience a healthier person.

I played or programmed all the instruments on this album. By "programmed", I mean that I used various composition programs to score out keyboard parts, synth drum parts, and various other musical textures that you'll find on the disc. It's true that probably 80% of the non-guitar instruments on this album are entirely synthetic. However, the time, effort, and passion that went into painstakingly scoring out these songs was not synthetic, and I stand by this record very proudly.

5 out of 5 stars Your ears will love you for buying this [CD!!!].......2003-05-16

My parents used to live across the alley behind Forrest Kyle's home. When I visited my parents, at least once a month, I'd usually hear Forrest practicing. I listened to him in this way for about four years. After about three years, I noticed that he was beginning to sound like a professional musician. At some point after that, I began to wonder whether I was hearing him or a CD being played loudly, and whether he had given up the guitar and was now playing CDs instead.

Then one day I heard what sounded like an outrageously good guitar player playing on a CD with a band. Thinking there was a chance that it was Forrest, I went to his house to find out who was playing. His mother answered the door and told me that it was Forrest playing - not a CD. She asked me if I would like to see him playing. She opened up the door to his room and there he was playing a guitar with electronic musical equipment everywhere and a large Jimi Hendrix poster on the wall. I'm an amateur jazz and classical guitar player so I took advantage of the situation to "talk shop" with Forrest about music before I left.

Soon after that my parents and I moved to the Portland, Oregon area. So I didn't get a chance to follow Forrest's musical career. However, recently I called his parents and his mother told me about his web site and his new CD "Heroes and Villains." I was very glad to find out that he was making CDs and I bought the new CD immediately. Today I ordered his other CD.

"Heroes and Villains" is highly accessible instrumental rock music that invites you to fly with it and makes room for passengers. There is a lot to like. The one vocal (the title cut) is excellent also. On the CD a variety of musical styles and tempos (mostly within the rock vein) are used to express a rich array of emotions. Most of the CD is great dance music too, but the latin flavored tunes are especially danceable. Forrest is very agile at making the guitar talk and he has something to say. Because of the way it's produced, it sounds better than anything else I've played on the CD player in my car. It seems to cut through road noise quite effectively.

5 out of 5 stars Killer tunes with real tasty guitar work.......2003-01-10

This is a great album, especially if you like instrumental rock style guitar. We love this guys work. We've had his other album for about a year and probably have nearly worn it out - if that's possible. Instrumental guitar freaks usually go for the blazing shred but with Forrest you get the same guitar skill with cool songs. The guys a great musician. We usually listen it real lound when playing video games and turn the TV volume off. Great stuff.
