Model-turned-songstress Miranda Richards has more talent up her sleeve than the ability to smile for a camera. The twentysomething singer-songwriter has released an excellent debut CD, a mix of alt-country pop songs dosed in psychedelics. From her cover of the Rolling Stones gem "Dandelion" to the originals she penned herself, The Herethereafter is simple and beautiful, featuring a Beatles-meets-Sheryl Crow pop sensibility and a Mazzy Star/Mojave 3 softness. Richard's hypnotic vocals are reminiscent of those of Sundays front woman Harriet Wheeler, but her music is peppier and more produced than the Sundays' sleepy dreamscapes. Backed by guests like the Beachwood Sparks and Jon Brion (producer for Rufus Wainwright and Aimee Mann), Richards has created a solid collection of well-textured tracks (many of which use strings to great effect) buoyed by her ability to project both sweetness and strength in her angelic vocals. --Jennifer Maerz

5 out of 5 stars The 60's Recaptured!.......2006-03-01

Miranda, blending 60's style with modern dream-pop, is a talent that should not be overlooked.

With the promise a second album and having established herself even more (with her all too alluring, angelic voice), we can expect to see more of her.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem.......2005-11-01

I first was introduced to Miranda Lee Richards when I was bored one night in New Orleans and was watching PBS. I then saw there was a concert on and the voice of the person singing was that of Miranda and I was instantly hooked. It took me a while to find out that she was (I caught the middle of the program and annoyingly they didn't say her name again, but I remembered the songs) but I eventually found out and bought her CD from Amazon. At first I was like "yeah this is good, but not as awesome as she is live" then I started listening to the CD more and more, and now it is ALWAYS in my rotation. I have to say she grows on you, but it doesn't take long for her to do so. I usually don't like female singers, but Miranda is different then most, and her music is quite powerful...I can't wait till her next one.

5 out of 5 stars Spacey, Dreamy Alt-Country.......2004-05-26

Miranda Lee Richards' The Herethereafter is hard to categorize, but the best I can do is my title above: spacey, dreamy alt-country.

I've listened to this CD off and on since its release, and after listening to it again today, I realized Richards' release is a really good one. One that others should know about.

Her sound is a bit alt-country (her singing style has a bit of that country twang and there's a definite although not completely apparent country influence) with some psychedelia/spacey pop mixed in. There are a lot of interesting sounds floating around each song, and one of my favorites that pretty much epitomizes why I love this release so much is "Ella." Richards' singing is light and delicate, and there's a lot of interesting studio work to the music and her vocals during the chorus. A very soothing track.

It's nice to see an artist who is not "boxing" herself into a certain sound and who isn't afraid to show off her influences (a bit Beatles, a bit Sheryl Crow, a bit Beth Orton). Great release, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A great record that you may not know about.......2004-04-21

I met the very beautiful Miranda Lee Richards years ago in the Lower Haight section on San Francisco. She seemed to be destined to have great things happen to her whatever she did. I didn't see her around for many years, and then I heard she had a record coming out.

Her album, The Herethereafter, is a perfect reflection of her own aesthetic. It's a mix of a poetic sensibility and pop music. The songs are very well written, full of great melodies and harmonies, just like her 60's heroes, The Rolling Stones and Gram Parsons.

I remember Miranda as this poet and artist who was looking for her own voice. I didn't know what to expect. I saw her play a few weeks later in San Francisco. Her sound was impressive. Songs like "The Beginner" and "Beauty Queen" seem like instant classics. With her partner, Rick Parker, they were able to blend rock and country, and alternative music and hiphop, into a new cool hybrid form.

I talked to both of them after the show, and they both seemed very down the earth and talk about the record they have spent the past year making. They seemed very excited to meet people and to present their music.

Miranda has been known in the past as a model. She is known also for her work with Brian Jonestown Massacre. This record came out around 9/11, and like Mercury Rev, the music of that time didn't really get a fair chance. It's time to rediscover some of the great music that came out in later 2001.

4 out of 5 stars A very pleasant surprise.......2004-03-12

Worth at least 4.5 stars. This is a really good recording, I'd put it in the top few CDs I've purchased lately (which is a lot). I've been buying and listening to a lot of her contemporaries and have been mostly unimpressed (generic tunes, overbearing pop production...) but this one caught my attention. It has the stamp of originality, that there's really a talented person/artist/musician here who has something to say and it's clearly expressed in the music. I don't want to make comparisons - there's plenty in other reviews here and most are apropo - because I think the most important thing here is that she's an original voice.

The voice is like hearing angels singing. The melodies are smooth and lyrical. She seems to be mystical, moving, and even ethereal. I do not tire of hearing her voice.
