Hail Social

Hail Social

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Philadelphia's Hail Social released a 7-inch and a 4-song EP, toured the US opening for Interpol and Secret Machines, and have shared stages with Unicorns, TV On The Radio, Ted Leo, Of Montreal, Joan Of Arc, Denali, and The Rogers Sisters, to name a few. Some believe they're the next band to break out of Philly. Some say their sound is a little Goth with groove, like The Cure's "Head On The Door", or power-wave like Duran Duran's "Seven And The Ragged Tiger". The band likes to refer to this album as "80's roller skating music played by a metal band."

1 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-07-20

When I read the first review of this album equating it with ABBA I was sure the reviewer was just being a jerk. Well, they were actually being kind. I really liked much of Hail Social's first release, nothing spectacular but some really nice tunes. I can't even imagine the circumstances that took place for the band to produce Modern Love & Death. From start to finish it is nothing but sappy cheese laden nonsense. The sound is so much different from their first release which isn't always a bad thing but in this case the new direction is so far from anything cool not even crappy radio stations should be playing this stuff. I am so disheartened by this album because Hail Social is one of those bands that I was expecting to see evolve and create some really interesting music. What a let down.

5 out of 5 stars Catchy, Fun, Often Irresistible..........2007-07-12

Fun, enjoyable pop music that implements a variety of engaging synth-pop and post-punk techniques. A step-up from an enjoyable but rather repetitive debut album. Songs like "Annabelle" and "Heaven" certainly make this one worth the buy.

I primarily felt like writing this bit to boost the score a bit. The other critic who compared it to an ABBA cover... well, I'll just say I disagree wholeheartedly.

1 out of 5 stars OUCH!.......2007-05-16

What is this Im listening to? It's like an ABBA cover album. Very soft, very lame. Keyboards where guitars should be. Cheezy choruses!! Several good songs, many that are just laughable. 1st album rocked and this one is a joke. Why didn't someone step up and say "hey, we can't put this tripe out there!". ???

5 out of 5 stars Over and Over.......2006-03-06

This album is beyond great, it just blows you away. the bass is defently the absolute highlight, its quick and sharp melodies just cut at you over and over and you enjoy every turn it takes. if your a fan of any sort of indie/rock or alternative music, this is a must buy for you!

5 out of 5 stars "This is for real".......2005-12-16

Behold Hail Social, the latest addition to the indie dance rock scene. Falling somewhere right in the middle of The Stills and Death From Above 1979, albeit faster paced than The Stills and softer than Death From Above 1979, but equally as melodic as both! Consider Hail Social a more melodic and consistent Elefant if you will.

The album starts off with "Hands Are Tied", probably the heaviest track on the album, which plays a little like a Bloc Party song. It's a great song to start with. Next we suddenly reach the apex, "Get In The Car", Hail Socials gem. This song is beautiful through and through. I particularly enjoy it when lead singer Dayve Hawk (what a name!) goes off: "This is for real. This is for real. SO FOR REAL!" While the lyrics are nothing too intuitive to the artists involved, the melody represented is just completely hypnotic. "Come Out Tonight" is the most alternative track on the album, it's a bass led song which sports some more incredible melodies. "Repetition" slows the tempo of the album down, and not in any bad manner. While it's a slower song, it is by no means slow. Again, I can't emphasize it enough how melodic these guys are. This song is amazing.

The album ends with "No Title", which sounds like a pun, I know. But appropriately enough it is one of the better songs on the album. Other stand outs are "Another Face", which has one of the best choruses on the album, "Feeling Is Wrong" and "Track #1". The only song I find myself skipping is "More Time", which isn't necessarily a bad song...

Overall, this album is amazing. Like any band of this nature: The Bravery, Elefant, Death From Above 1979, Bloc Party and The Stills, the main focus of Hail Social is not the lyrics. All the aforementioned bands including Hail Social are melody driven bands, and if you like any of the bands I listed as comparison, do yourself a favor and check out Hail Social, as they just joined the best of this genre.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2005-11-09

I'm a DJ for a radiostation that plays more underground music. It's been a few weeks now with Hail Social in the studio, and I've played it a few times. It's a lot better than I expect. It's not amazing, but it's a very solid album.

It sounds like 80s rock, but there's something more to it. I don't know if it's in the great guitare lines, the great drum beats, or the solid lyrics, but there is something special in this album.

I highly recommen this album. The only down sides of the album is that the singers voice can be a little bit high, which just makes it weird, and that there are only 9 tracks. But again, solid album.

5 out of 5 stars definitely worth peeping out live at a venue.......2005-09-08

I've been saving my lunch money to check these guys out. They sound great live, I saw them open for Rainer Maria. A lot of energy and would recommend getting the album.

5 out of 5 stars Dancy as hell post-punk.......2005-08-29

I'm a broke college student, so it's rare that after forking up the dough for a concert ticket I'll actually be inclined to buy the band's CD. However, I just saw these guys open for Rainer Maria in Charlottesville, VA, and I couldn't help myself. This weekend's beer money went to Hail Social for their new album and I certainly don't regret it! I listened to the album five times in a row right after I got it. The album only has 9 songs on it, but they're all great songs. If you like catchy, dancy post-punk stuff like Death From Above 1979, Bloc Party, or the Stills (all great bands) you'll like these guys too.

5 out of 5 stars Sensory Reliving of a Lost Time.......2007-04-03

I bought this originally because I play trumpet and saw Vizzutti's name on the list of artists. Of course, he's excellent, but what's really special here is that you can close your eyes and be back in the town park in small town America of the 2nd half of the 19th century when every town had a band while they waited for TV to be invented. I have a photo of my ancestors posing with the Mount Pleasant Mills (PA) band in the early 20th century and feel I'm there when I hear this music.

5 out of 5 stars Makes me smile........2004-09-03

This is a 2 Disc set of charming 19th Century American music of the "everyday" variety: polkas, quadrilles, waltzes...tunes like "Pop Goes the Weasel" played sweetly and without a hint of irony. If you're looking for sophisticated concert music, look elsewhere. This is the music Americans were playing and hearing in park bands, "social orchestras", etc. Highlights include stunning performances by trumpet virtuoso Alan Vizutti on E-flat cornet. Also notable are the vocal quartet recreations of the spiritual songs and abolitionist anthems of the Hutchinson Family Singers. This collection is like a lively little piece of American history on disc, elegantly performed by all invloved. The 27-page booklet is crammed with interesting information.
