How can someone so unpredictable behave so predictably? Every time PJ Harvey releases something sophisticated and clean like 2000's Mercury Music Prize tipped Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea, it just about guarantees a contradictory follow-up album is around the bend. Her ambitious 1992 debut, Dry, inspired the bitter death rattle of Rid of Me. Her third offering, 1995's elegant To Bring You My Love, gave way to the stormy Is This Desire?. Harvey's sixth solo album, Uh Huh Her, doesn't disappoint. It's a nasty riposte to the success of its predecessor, built on grubby blues-punk riffs and the brooding, primal howl that Harvey uses when she wants to impersonate a she-wolf. Some of it seems disappointingly remedial ("The Letter," "Cat on the Wall"), but the best material ("The Desperate Kingdom of Love," "Who the Fuck?") just reconfirms that no matter how raw the British songwriter serves it up, the beauty of her work is undeniable. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Good album........2007-02-11

I can have this album playing all the time,it's just a moody album,i love that in it,the tone is moody, the lyrics are so expressive, this album is human,i am not going to describe each song, each one has a different flow. I almost felt she didn't put alot of effort in this album, like it came naturally;it just comes so easy, like a first reaction or impression, she has a deeply beautiful voice, her music generally is great, she is an artist in every way,i know she made better albums, but this could have been easily commericialized, the song titles, the lyrics, the music is just so smooth.I just feel this album and it feels me,give it a try.You don't waste your money buying a PJ Harvey album.

4 out of 5 stars A Typical Offering Which Does Not Disappoint.......2006-12-17

The opening riffs of 'The Life and Death of Mr. Badmouth' demonstrate PJ's prowess as a songwriter and performer. Wave upon wave on sound build to a cresendo leading to a wall of silence at the end. 'Shame' is one of my favorite tracks. I will not review this album track by track. Suffice it to say that this is a fantastic CD.

Longtime fans will not be disappointed. If you are new to PJ's work, this would be a good second purchase. Start with 'To Bring You My Love' or 'Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea.' Either of these is a good place to begin.

Buy this CD.

2 out of 5 stars POLLY IS AN EAR-TEASE!.......2006-11-14

Okay, usually the sound of PJ's intense, obsessive moaning sets me to drooling. I need to confess that much to you. This, however, is the most frustrating addition to her canon. It promises so much and delivers so very little.
From the pouty frown on the cover to the opening salvo of "Mr. Badmouth", I thought this was going to be another stunner like STORIES FROM THE CITY. Not even close. There are a handful of moments here that smolder like the best of her work but never spark and catch fire. This sounds like it was written & recorded in one day. Not her best day. Everything sounds unfinished. I don't mean raw like DRY or abrasive like RID OF ME. I mean a distinct lack of power. There are a lot of song fragments. "No Child Of Mine" could have been one of the finest PJ HARVEY songs, but at the precise moment where she seems ready to veer it into greatness she chokes it. Stops it dead. It may be an attempt at a middle-finger taunt, but it's not dramatic. Just irritating. The most fleshed out number is "Pocketknife". It's as good as anything she's ever done...and sounds completely out of place here. "The Desperate Kingdom of Love" plays like an out-take from IS THIS DESIRE? It's got a delicate beauty but is recorded at levels that over-emphasize QUIET! I don't need to be beat over the head with silence. I get it. It's not an original idea. F@$# post-modernism. She's fully capable of working "The Darker Days Of Me & Him" into a frothy intoxicating brew. She just didn't do it. Aside from that there are songs on here that are utterly unlistenable.

With UH HUH HER she's giving you scraps. Sure her scraps would be seen as brilliance in lesser artists but she's NOT a lesser artist.

Of course you must own this if you're a fan. You wouldn't want to be without "Pocketknife", "Mr. Badmouth" or even the 68 seconds of "No Child of Mine", but if you are just now coming around to Polly's gifts? You can skip this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as most PJ.......2006-08-22

This album seems a bit scattered, with about half filler and half good material. I think this was done around the same time as Marianne Faithfull's BEFORE THE POISION, which was mostly written by PJ Harvey. She seems to have saved some of her best songs for that album rather than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Rockincamp!.......2007-05-07

I bought this cd for my fiancee but have found myself listening to it more often than her. Just good solid Mellencamp at his best. Despite the suspect looking cover its a great album!

4 out of 5 stars A very good rock album.......2007-03-04

John Mellencamp really started to come into his own with this mid-1980's release. He reclaimed his real name (from the record company moniker of John Cougar)and he cut loose with some great rockers. He showed hints of his social consciousness with "Pink Houses," letting the Ronald Reagan generation know that not everyone was living the American Dream. He showed he was still the bad boy with "Crumblin' Down", "Play Guitar," "Authority Song," and "Serious Business." Just around the corner for Mellencamp was his career masterpiece, Scarecrow. UH-Huh is a very good all-around rock album and is always fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars sweet.......2007-02-28

I have been waiting for the acoustic version of 'Pink Houses' to appear on a remastered CD. I bought the CD upon reading about it, and that version alone was worth the price of admission. 'Scarecrow" gets lots of attention, but 'Uh-huh' contained great music, including the best song of the 80's, "Pink Houses." I think Mellencamp keeps getting better.

4 out of 5 stars Star Making Album.......2007-02-08

This album is a lot of fun and turned Mellencamp into a star

5 out of 5 stars A Damn Good Collection! .......2006-09-02

This is truly one of the best collections of the early 1980s and the standout collection of 1983. John Mellencamp is a damn good rocker and this collection will not disappoint!

Mellencamp catches his listeners' collective attention with "Crumblin' Down" and has established his rightful place in the ranks of [...] kickin' rockers.

His stellar classic "Pink Houses" is a wonderful unifer and the acoustics are nothing short of outstanding. It is a coast-to-coast and worldwide treat that will leave listeners pleading for more.

The "Authority Song" could be the story of my life. It is a damn good assertive piece that is demanding to be taken seriously. If ever there was a straight from the soul rock hit, this is the one.

"Play Guitar" is a damn good in your face rocking number. It's a poke in the macho eye with some damn good guitar playing and some hard, cutting edge lyrics. I love it!

You have from the heartland the rich rock from the heart of one of the best rockers that ever picked up a guitar. John Mellencamp is an elemental musical force - he is here to stay!

Be sure to get this along with "American Fool," "Scarecrow" and any of Mellencamp's other collections. You will be so glad that you did. Every song is worth it. Be prepared to dance.

Amazon.com essential recording

"Pink Houses" is the state-of-our-union anthem that John Mellencamp likes to boast about, but the real class-awareness beef of 1983's Uh-Huh is in "Authority Song" ("Call up my preacher... / He said, 'You don't need no strength, you need to grow up, son'")--not to mention the kidding cynicism of "Crumblin' Down" and the Mellencamp-John Prine collaboration "Jackie O." With his Stonesy band crackling behind him, the newly minted superstar also shows that he gets the joke of his "serious business" on "Play Guitar," which might have been the album's fourth hit single if not for its admonition to "forget all about that macho shit." --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mellencamp Should Sometimes Win!.......2005-03-27

With the huge success of AMERICAN FOOL in 1982 the artist formerly called himself John Cougar added his real surname MELLENCAMP and surged ahead with his own rock'n roll style-straight-ahead rock with homecoming blues. CRUMBLING DOWN and AUTHORITY SONG are such straight rock songs. PINK HOUSES is a nice sample of homecoming nostalgia. During 1984 campaign Republican candidate Ronald Reagan used PINK HOUSES as Presidential campaign song ,which was against the will of the artist who made it of course. In AMERICAN FOOL the gap between hit tracks and the rest are so huge but this one is truly consistent -- the other album tracks are arranged and mixed so that the listener would not skip after track 4, WARMER PLACE TO SLEEP. PLAY GUITAR is another of upbeat rock song and closing song GOLDEN GATES refreshes our soul.

Essential for American rock fans and for any music fans who enjoyed recent compilation
WORDS AND MUSIC.

5 out of 5 stars Uh Huh is a big Yes.......2004-10-06

Pre-dating his "Farm Aid" support of America's Heartland, Mellencamp's "Uh Huh" clearly shows the nostalgia and amicable rebellion that pervades his work. From the midwest ode "Pink Houses" to the self deprecating "Authority Song", Mellencamp continues his "American Fool" path of embracing your roots while still having a great time.

5 out of 5 stars The Best overall Mellencamp album.......2004-08-15

Uh-Huh was recorded in a 16 day jam session in Southern Indiana and it is far and away Mellencamp's strongest album. There are other songs of his that are my favorite but this album is incredibly powerful and tight. Well-conceived. If you are unsure, listen to the samples up above and you'll be convinced.

5 out of 5 stars A classic rock album!.......2004-06-23

In later years--"Trouble No More," "Cuttin Heads," etc.--Mellencamp has turend to a more folky-bluesy sound. In the eighties, though, it was all about rock n roll--and "Uh Huh" is a classis rock album (as is "Scarecrow," by the way).

Mellencamp acknowledges his fame in "Crumblin Down," and pokes fun at society in "Pink Houses," "Serious Business," and "Play Guitar." With the rebellious attitue displayed on "Authority Song," along with the world-wise anthem "Pink Houses," Mellencamp positioned himself as a singer of the people.

"Uh Huh" is a classic rock n roll album, there's no doubt about it. While Mellencamp's songwriting isn't always world-class (though close), his melodies and voice enrapture. Do you need to buy this album? Let's here it: "Uh huh."

4 out of 5 stars An ass kicking album? Uh-huh!.......2004-02-26

In 1983,after three albums under the name John Cougar,he extends it to John Cougar Mellencamp. This album spawned three Top 20 hits which are CRUMBLIN' DOWN,PINK HOUSES and AUTHORITY SONG. The latter tells about a fighter("I fight authority, authority always wins.") JACKIE O is an ode to the now-deceased Jacquline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. On PLAY GUITAR,JCM tells listeners,"Forget all about that macho s--t and learn how to play guitar!". This album was recorded in the summer of 1983 and released only 4 months later. An ass-kicking album.

5 out of 5 stars the ultimate rockabilly god!.......2006-03-11

Move over Elvis, seriously. A lot of people credit Elvis and "Sun" as the force behind rockabilly, but Charlie Feathers was right there to make it happen, organizing many sessions there, and working with the greats, including Elvis and Cash. This stuff is gold, and the liner notes alone are worth the purchase price. Charlie gives a rundown on how he got that sound, how the scene developed etc., and the tracks are just a bonus! This CD will always have a reserved spot in my changer.

Not the most Feathers recordings in one place, but some of the best.

...and they are entertaining as heck. Look at their steps! I like them because they remind me of kids my daughter or neice hang out with. And you cannot deny that they are confident and camera--video--savvy. We older folks should stop hating on some of the boy groups for doing their thing and just go with the fact that they are maybe keeping our kids from being super bored. And that means a lot in my household, you better beleive it. Remember that the J5 was a boy band, too. 'Uh-huh!' is a good neo-pop tune that I don't mind tappin' my toe to, either.
