Editorial Reviews
Since forming in NYC in 2001, singer/guitarist Steve Salad (once the leader of underground sensations Deformo) and drummer Michael Azerrad (one of the most respected music journalists of the past decade), have been making utterly catchy, indisputably original songs that range from the wryly whimsical to the grandly melancholic, recalling everyone from the Talking Heads to the Beatles while retaining a style all its own. The band''s song "Just A Body" will be featured in the upcoming Michael Showalter film The Baxter (one of the biggest hits of the 2005 TriBeCa Film Festival). The New Yorker had this to say about The King of France: "The King of France writes catchy, intelligent, highly melodic pop-rock songs with a strong and welcome dose of Midwestern angst".

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Perfect for Halloween!.......2007-01-04
What, you call this scary music?.......2005-07-07
Here's a list of what I would consider TRULY TERRIFYING works of classical music:
~Ralph Vaughan Williams' 4th & 6th symphonies (especially the 2nd movement of each of them)
~Igor Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'
~Gyorgy Ligeti's 'Atmospheres' and 'Lux Aeterna' (used in the film '2001')
~Almost anything by Bela Bartok (but especially his 'The Miraculous Mandarin')
If you want to be truly frightened, go for the said pieces!
Music Is Very Good, However................2004-08-14
FOUR STARS if you just want a nice sampling of bold classical music, and TWO STARS if you want it to go "Bump!" in the Night.
Good Classical type Halloween music anthology.......2004-07-14

Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31
This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.
Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

Anny Chancel (Later Known as Sheila) was Born on August 16, 1946 in Paris, France. She Became a Pop/Rock Star in France in the 1960s, but her Early Songs have Been Denounced as Childish, Vapid, Fluffy Bubblegum Music. Although She Sang with B. Devotion (Three African-american Singers) in Some Earlier Disco Songs in the Late 1970s, her Crowning Achievement is Regarded as her Song "Spacer". This Late-1979 Song, as Well as the Other Seven Songs on her 1980 Album "King of the World", were Produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of the Chic Organization. "Spacer" was Popular in Europe (Including in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the Netherlands) and South Africa, Selling Over Five Million Copies Worldwide.Customer Reviews:
Out at last!!!!.......2006-07-27
If there are any other CHIC-produced disco anthems as good as "Spacer", chances are you already have them. "Spacer" is in a league of it's own, though, an ultra-smooth disco work-out, made unforgettable by it's being unusually gentler than other disco songs of the period. But what a rhythm...it grabs you right after the twinkling intro finishes and never lets up for it's full 6 minutes. The song had drifted in and out of being "cool" over the decades since it first came out, but now I think it can safely be logged as one of disco's finest. Some people don't like the vocal performance be Sheila herself, in fact I've seen reviews on CHIC-related topics that refer to her rather meanly as the "disco robot". Well, I think she has a lot of charm and don't forget she is singing in a second language. Her pronunciation of "I'm so lucky!" gets me every time - plus she was simply stunning as well, one of France's most beguiling singing stars of the 1970's.
Well, that's enough about "Spacer", what about the rest of it? Well I'm afraid that's the problem because the rest of this CD is bland, bland, bland! There are really only two other good tracks: "Mayday", is the funniest, a chugging dance workout that seems to be about impotence, and is full of the funniest puns I have ever heard in music lyrics "You can't raise your landing gear"...arf arf! It also has a great guitar solo, but what's this..."Mayday" only just scrapes over 3 minutes in length? What a waste. The same problem comes with the other good track, "King of the World". This track makes good use of its racing driver theme, with some very clever rhyming and a good catchy tune, but as the second biggest draw on the album (it was the follow-up single to "Spacer"), it is a let down at just over four minutes.
The rest of the 5 songs are extremely formulaic CHIC disco-by-numbers with really weak tunes and hackneyed lyrics. I like Sheila's voice, but it would take a skilled vocalist indeed to turn the repeating of "Don't go, I love you so.." thirty times over into something exciting.
It's also extremely short, and without bonus tracks you are looking at barely half an hours worth of music. If I had paid big-bucks for this on eBay I would be kicking myself, but at a proper price like this, it's worth buying for the perfection of "Spacer", and the other two good songs. The rest are sadly instantly disposable.
A strange combo.......2006-06-13
Pick this cd up. The transfer sounds great and if you're a Chic fan, this will keep you happy.

Magma through and through.......2006-02-19
Any fan of the band will enjoy this immensely, and any newcomer to the band that is not afraid of 10-20 minute songs should be able to get into this.
Au Magma Eternel.......2005-11-01
Magma is not an easy band to describe to people. in fact, i feel like the term "band" is not adequate and is misleading. the same goes for labels and genres like "prog" or "fusion." sure, there are plenty of those styles represented within Magma's core sound; and their influences are easily felt in their music. but Magma, to me, are a force...a gigantic, almost monsterous presence that cannot be ignored. their sound is huge and massive, filled with moments of terror and beauty. stark minimal rhythms give way to colourful audio explosions, drenched with harmonious voices and thundering bass and guitar. and the drums...wow. well, the drumming is just brilliant. this French group has enjoyed legendary status for decades, and has been highly influential (spawing many Zuehl obsessed bands...Ruins, Guapo, The Flying Luttenbachers...just to name a few), but yet their overall appeal is quite limited. probably due in no small part to their choice of language to sing in (a language called Kobian, which Christian Vander, drummer and mastermind behind Magma, has invented in order to explain the concepts behind his group's music and lyrical stance). there pieces are long and full of complexities and brilliant twists and turns...dark, treacherous, disonant avant-prog with intense crescendoes that bubble and boil with an electrifying power and joy that is both familiar and strangely alien to the senses.
ghostly distant voices and warm cymbal washes greet the listener for the first few seconds of Kohntarkosz Anteria, and it sounds (briefly) like a cut from Donald Byrd's brilliant album A New Perspective. but within moments, the Kobaian chanting begins and the song erupts forth in it's cosmic swing. there are still lots of elements of the gospel influence here on KA, as seen in Magma's Udu Wudu & Attahk albums, although now it feels like that gospel influence has been refined to fits more in with the traditional Zuehl and avant-proggy sounds. the choir has been stripped down to only five singers (including Vander), as compared to the seven member group that graced the third disc of the Theusz Hamtaahk Trilogie Live 3cd box set (that Amazon does not seem to carry at the time of this writing...shame), and it sounds alot more open and clean, allowing these beautiful voices to rise and soar among these infinitely expressive and impressively complex structures. and i feel lucky and blessed to have witnessed this amazing album performed live on their Japan tour this past September. and if you thought this album sounds good at home on the stereo; you have no idea how powerful it can be in a live setting! wow! Kohntarkosz Anteria is a more than worthy addition to the otherworldly Magma legacy. Hail!
Embarrassing.......2005-05-25
For many, 1973's 'Mekanink Destructiw Kommandoh' is one of the most amazing records ever made. The only problem is that the sound quality is murky, and every edition of the CD released always attracts the rumour that it has been recorded from an LP (albeit a pristine copy) rather than any tape master. It's an album crying out for a re-mastering -- ideally to a 5.1 SACD format.
In the absence of such, I was intrigued by the blurb about 'Ka', which seemed to herald a return to Magma's 1970s values, while promising 2004 recording quality. The only original members stil in the band, as far as I can tell, are Christian and Stella Vander. Desperately missed are Jannik Top (now working on stage productions like Notre Dame) and vocalist/shrieker Klaus Blasquiz.
The result is an anodyne, no-risks return to pseudo-MDK compositions. Unfortunately it now sounds to me rather like an amateurish school concert in which a few ageing teachers have donned their flairs one last time to play for the parents, with the headmaster's secretary on backing vocals.
It undoubtedly has its musical moments, but just as most of us had grown out of Star Wars by 1985, so we also learnt to put away the childish things of the Kobaia story about 30 years ago.
Fantastic!.......2004-12-27
While Christian Vander has always been busy musically, it has been many years since there was a "true" Magma album released of new studio material. "K.A" is the CD that Vander fans have been waiting for, and the wait has been well worth it! Vander wrote the music for this album back in the 70's, but it took him this long to get it recorded and released.
While so many bands reform to cash in on their former reputations and release sub par music, "K.A" is a very welcome exception. Of course Stella Vander is also present, but for the most part Christian Vander has reformed Magma with a new, fresh, young lineup who are still up to the task at hand! I rank it right up there with some of Magma's finest legendary albums and I'm sure that with time, "K.A" will also go down in history as being another such milestone.
The foldout CD packaging comes complete with a book of lyrics, entirely in Kobian!
So, bravo Christian! This CD is a truly essential one and an absolute must have for fans of Zeuhl music!

Album Description
