Richard Manuel Tribute.......2007-01-12
You have to be a fan of The Band to truely enjoy this. It is basically a solo acoustic set in a small bar with a few friends who drop in for the set. The piano lacks that funky up-right Band sound that we are used to hearing from Richard, but all of the recordings are of excellent sound quality. Richards voice is actually in great form, considering it was recorded in 1985, just a few months before he committed suicide, and that at The Last Waltz in 1976, his voice was basically shot. He even gives it his best in an encore of Whispering Pines. The dialog in between tracks is good too. Overall it is a fine tribute to a musician whose work deserves the right to stand the test of time.
Poor electric piano sound is a shame.......2006-04-16
The import version of this CD has several reviews that are accurate, but none mention one problem of which all purchasers should be aware. For whatever reason, Richard Manuel was apparently using an extremely poor sounding electric piano which is so high in the mix, particularly on the initial tracks, that it is hard to listen to. This is a shame because his voice, even when things get sloppy, is endearing as always. His high range isn't really there but Manuel not hitting the notes is still worth hearing. But beware, listen before you buy. The piano sound might be too much for you. As crazy as it sounds, dubbing in a real piano on the tracks would have been worth the effort.

Customer Reviews:
The Getaway by Chris de Burgh.......2007-06-12
I love the music and the artist. I wore out the tape of this artist so I
decided to replace it.
A highlight among de Burgh's work.......2006-01-24
This is probably Chris de Burgh's strongest album even if it is not his most recognized or commercially successful work. I'm not sure if Chris himself picked the tracks for his greatest hits compilation of 1989, Spark to a Flame, or if his record label was responsible. Either way, it reflects the strength of this album that five tracks here made the greatest hits: "Don't Pay the Ferryman," "The Getaway," "Ship to Shore," "Borderline" and "Where Peaceful Waters Flow."
"Ferryman" was Chris' first real hit around the world. It's a strong, driving rock song with a great hook and a nice lyric. The imagery is typical of de Burgh's story-song settings even if this is not one of his deeper lyrics. "Getaway" and "Ship to Shore" are two other catchy, rockier songs on the album, with the rest being quieter ballad-type songs.
"Borderline" is a sadly sung ballad about a soldier longing for the day there is no more war and he can return to his love. This song had an interesting sequel five years later on the album Into the Light. Chris actually sampled the closing lines of "Borderline" before heading into the faster and more upbeat "Say Goodbye to it All." I remember how "Borderline" was strummed on guitars by soldiers at a real borderline in the war between Angola and South Africa.
"Where Peaceful Waters Flow" recalls earlier de Burgh ballads like "In a Country Churchyard" and "A Spaceman Came Travelling." It's a haunting song with a beautiful chorus. All these songs make the album worth getting.
Not the best-known, but the best.......2005-09-09
Fans of Chris de Burgh's adult-oriented pop will often cite "Into the Light" (with its massive international hit "The Lady in Red") as their favorite de Burgh album. Fans of de Burgh's early-career acoustic ballads and period stories might cite "Spanish Train" as their favorite. But for me, "The Getaway" is the best.
More assured and less precious than his early work but more evocative and alive than his later releases (which tend to be overproduced), "The Getaway" is a perfect balance of de Burgh's many sounds and interests.
Three tracks are straight-ahead, bright-sounding, energetic rock and roll: "Don't Pay the Ferryman" (his first US hit, which admittedly may seem a bit dated now), the title track, and "Ship to Shore"--the strongest and tightest of the trio. (These represent a sound he would fully explore in "Man on the Line," but as the albums that followed grew more and more reliant on synthesizers, the energy of his rock numbers dissipated.)
His art-rock and period interests are represented by the three part epic "Revolution/Light a Fire/Liberty," whose content is obvious from the titles, building energy in part one, exploding in part two, and settling down to a quiet acoustic sound in the last segment. While it's not quite as strong as earlier epics, it still succeeds.
The rest of the album consists of the light-hearted, light-rock but very catchy "Living on the Island" and some of the best ballads of his career. These include "Counting on You" (written for his new-born child), "Where Peaceful Waters Flow," and the melancholy anti-war "Borderline." All have become staples of his concerts and greatest-hit collections.
"The Getaway" was my introduction to Chris de Burgh, and twenty-two years later, it's still the best place to start.
[Note: this import edition appears released more recently that the US version by A&M. I am not aware, however, if it has been remastered.]
Thats right, 21 years old.......2005-03-27
I am 21 years old and this is one of my favorite albums. It ranks just lower than System of a Down's self titled and Manson's Anti-Christ Superstar. I heard it for the first time when I was 16 going through my Dad's tapes (yeah, TAPES.) I just now found out what the album was called and ordered two (one for myself and one to replace the tape i stole from my dad 5 years ago.) This is not the same "Lady in Red" music you have to put up with in every crappy love story movie, its good music. So whether you fit in with the genre of people who listen to the kind of music I was conceived to or are atleast willing to give it a chance, I would recomend this album.
Just a light through the time.......2004-09-26
We are in the early XXI century and many songs circa 80's keep on playing in our heads and lives. Chris de Burgh music is an example of good and everlasting music. "Don't pay the ferryman", "Where peaceful waters flow", are just an example. If you really want to listen music really worths to be listened and rememebered, take youself the chance to enjoy this album (and all Mr. de Bugh ones).

This is an AWESOME cd, it epic to the extreame..........just sit back and let the music take you in, or be on the go..............BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!
Decent exercise in style, but doesn't quite work.......2004-09-24
It's soulful dance rock in the style of the Rolling Stones, but it rolls smoother than the stones, and the lead singer doesn't have as good of a voice. The problem with this recording is that the songs don't quite stick as well as they should because they're so smooth and attribute that to the production it's so smooth, and I think the band would fair better with a slightly rawer sound. There are still really good pop songs like:Six Pacs, Come Love Me, Oh, How She Gave Me Love, and the song about an angel. I wouldn't recommend the album to anyone, though. Fans of the short-lived series "Young Americans" might want to download "Six Pacs" because it was the very catchy them song.
Outstanding.......2001-07-18
I bought this albumn because I had heard the song six pacs on the show young americans. I had never heard of the getaway people before this as I live in england, but based on this CD alone I know I will be buying there other stuff, and any future albumns. The best songs are definetly six pacs, there she goes, and the unlisted remix of she gives me love. Though the other songs on the albumn are just as good.
AWSOME CD!!!!!!!!!.......2001-06-27
This is a great cd! When I have my friends over they tell me they love this cd. I think it's the best dance music ever! I will stay up so late dancing in my room to this cd! I LOVE IT!

Where would they be without a little love?.......2001-06-20
I am a huge Dave Matthews Band fan. My brother is too. But when he bought this CD, I had to burn myself a copy. It's pretty cool. It's not the best, but it's really good. And there are 12 tracks, but only 10 are listed. A remix of "She Gave Me Love" is by far the best track. Other highlights:
Six Pacs (1) Come Love Me (3) Decieved By an Angel (4) All About It (6) and Boyd Tinsley plays on "Open Your Mind"
Solid Album.

funky grooves.......2004-02-25
I bought this album after seeing these guys, who hail from Norway, opening for DMB in '98. They put on an energetic, quirky performance which this album captures nicely. Full of funky rhythms and upbeat tunes, it's lots of fun to listen to and carries the distinguishing quality of being a bit out of the ordinary in the delivery of both its lyrical message and its music. "She Gave Me Love," "Blind," "Juicy Lucy," "Does My Colour Scare You?," "Mr. E," and "Chocolate" stand out.
Funky!.......2002-09-30
This CD is absolutely excellent. There's not a bad track on it. It's pretty funky and a good one to sing along to (if you're alone!), dance to or chill to. For some reason I find I can't listen to it more than twice in a row though.
Good, But Not For Me.......2000-12-02
I picked this one up out of the cut out bins for a buck. Pretty good white boy Hip-Hop, if that's your thing. Similar in style in tone to The Stereo MCs. Sometimes compared to Beck, but they really are closer to Everlast (at least in his currant incarnation). The songs are groovy and laid back, with fairly good politically correct lyrics, especially `Does My Colour Scare You', `Get A Handle On It' and `Mr. E'. I gave my copy away. B-
You can't go wrong........2000-07-24
Don't worry about that frustrated feeling you get when you've just blown money on bad music. There's not a bad cut on this disc. It's socially conscious, easy to listen to, and above all, fun.
Finally a fresh, new sound!.......2000-01-18
Like a cross between Beck and G.Love, these guys have a fresh soulful groove with a an original sound that is all their own. I especially liked "Chocolate" and " Does My Color Scare You". I'm picky about my music, but I HIGHLY recommend this CD.

One of the best Bluesmen ever!!!!!.......2006-11-21
Corey Stevens is one of the most original Bluesmen around right now. He continues to push the envelope on each record. Stevens knows no musical boundaries. Instead of putting out stale old cover songs like most bands these days, the majority of Stevens music is original music he wrote himself. Stevens has more integrity than any of this "new" generation of people trying to play Blues. Corey Stevens has staying power, he's been in the business for many years, and there's a reason for that, because he is a true blue Bluesman, who's music is real. Corey Stevens is keeping the blues BLUE. I stand behind every record he makes because I can recognize true genius, true talent when I hear it. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Corey Stevens are the ONLY white Bluesmen I listen to. I think that says alot that I give them the honor of being in the same category of Bluesmen like Albert King, Buddy Guy, BB King, Freddie King, Robert Johnson, Elmore James, etc. Corey Stevens is every bit as much of a Bluesman as they all are. Stevens lives and breathes the Blues. Don't believe any of the negative reviews you see on here, just buy this record now, and you too will hear this is true! In a 100 years from now Corey Stevens will be remembered as one of the Legends of Blues, he will be talked about in the same sentences mentioning the Kings of the Blues. If you are not yet a fan of Stevens, buy this CD and you will be, and if by chance after that you're somehow not, then my friend you are tone deaf. Corey Stevens is one of the best! Your Blues CD collection is not complete until you have each one of his records in it! This will be one of the best purchases you make!
Is that all?.......2002-04-21
After getting through the heavy Stevie-Ray, and Clapton sounds of "Blue Drops...", I thought Corey found his own voice on "Road to Zen". This is a 180 away from that. It's not bad music, although a little thin, it's just non-descript. Instead of relying on Corey's guitar prowess and vocal power, this album tries to cover bored and thin songs with heavy production. Too bad, I really like this guy.
PRETTY BAD - UNFORTUNATELY NO "MINUS 10" ON THE RATING SCALE.......2001-11-27
There are musicians and there are people who go through the motions - then there are those who don't even do THAT well...
This CD is on the low end of that...
Consider this one a "NOT WORTH IT" chunk of plastic.
I'm using it as a coaster on the coffee table which is about the highest level of artistic merit that it deserves...
Another Awesome Performance.......2000-11-21
I love the latest COREY STEVENS CD "Getaway". It just adds to the many styles of Blues/Rock that COREY brings to music lovers. This varied style keeps COREY'S music from being too boring. I can listen to all 3 of his CD in a row & not grow tired of hearing the same musician playing song after song. If I leave my "Getaway" CD in my car, I really miss having it to play along with his other 2 CD's while I'm in the house. Because of this, I have bought 2 of each of his 3 CD's so I'll never get caught on a road trip without my COREY STEVENS.
Yuck.......2000-07-18
Yuck. Unfortnately that aboutsums it up for me. I don'tthink they should sell this out of the blues section of aCD store since there are no blues on it. I usually likeblues based rock but not thisstuff. I play blues guitar inclubs and I wouldn't want topromote myself with music thatsounds like this. Sorry Corey,I liked the first CD.

Great Tunes!.......2007-07-18
This album is great. It's POP Punk, but its fun to listen to and makes you wanna have a good day. In light of all the emo crap thats out there, this album is the counter to emo. Its happy, well done, and enjoyable.
A sad, sad departure for CIV.......2003-12-17
Thirteen Day Vaction is complete JUNK. It is the worst possible kind of pop-punk. Sappy, ridiculous lyrics with a bland and over-produced sound. This album is no different than anything Good Charlotte has put out. There is no edge or grit present at any level.
It is mind boggling to me that this could be the same band that put out Set Your Goals. It's more than apparent that CIV was shooting for mainstream acceptance, but why fall so far from the tree? Couldn't there have been some sort of middle ground? Songs like "Big Girl" and "Secondhand Superstar" are gag worthy! But really, those two songs alone can't sum up the overall wretched vibe Thirteen Day Vacation gives.
It's really sad that a band with so much potential had to go out with a sissy-rock album like this.
The album that killed a legendary punk rawk band........2001-07-09
....
... disappointment I felt ...[about] "Thirteen Day Getaway" by Civ. .... Civ's first record "Set Your Goals" was an amazing piece of punk rock. It was a big departure from the Gorilla Biscuits sound (which some fans were ok with, and others were not) and ended up going on to sell 1 million copies in the U.S. with the help of the single "Can't Wait One Minute More" featuring Lou from Sick of it All and a MTV video featuring a bevy of New York Hardcore legends.
Atlantic based on this success felt that the band might be ready to take Civ to "the next level" and suggested the band might want to broaden their sound to sell more records. The idea was tossed around the band, and then finally agreed upon. In my opinion the new sound is [not good] ... It can be described as this sort of 60's rock/punk rock hybrid that misfires again and again, complete with hoakey lyrics and moog organs.
"Haven't Been Myself in Awhile" and "Itchycoo Park" are particularily grating ... What happened to the band I love?!!" Civ finally gets back to old form with "Owners Manual", but by then the damage has been done and you really don't care anymore. The song "Little Men" written by Walter of Quicksand is the only other decent moment on this CD.
In the end Civ gambled. He gambled that the bands new sound (and apperance at the MTV Beach House in '98) would earn the band enough new fans to not have to worry about alienating the old ones. Unfortunetly Civ was wrong and rolled snake eyes with his big fuzzy dice from the "Set Your Goals" album cover instead of 7 or 11. Civ has since broken up ... and Civ now runs a tattoo palor in New York City probably thinking about what he would do differently if he could do it again. They have simply become an Atlantic write off. ....
....Hopefully Civ will come back to the stage again soon and leave this travesty of a record where it belongs, the past.

Who knew that the solid, staid old Berlin Philharmonic had such a groovy group of swingers in its cello section? One of them plays the maracas during the rests in his part, others slap their instruments with abandon, and some of them even shout at appropriate moments: if this makes them sound like trainspotters letting their hair down, it's not meant to. This recording of South American and South American-inspired music is full of joy from beginning to end, and played with the kind of accuracy other ensembles only dream of. The mood ranges from sultry and sweaty (Kaiser-Lindemann's Brazilian Variations) through coolly intellectual (the Fugue from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1) to pure sunshine (Burt Bacharach's "South American Getaway"). The arrangements are models of their kind, and the cellists respond to their challenges with bravura and passion--at times creating sounds remarkably like a bandonéon, at others producing perfect harmonics in octaves or just singing out with pure joy. Irresistibly seductive. --Warwick Thompson

Stellar.......2003-11-18
Wow - It's the cello-section of the Berlin Philharmonic, ok, so I expected a lot, but still this CD blew my ears off. What a performance! What a rare symbiosis of refined music making and unhalted moods and passion. Often, with lesser ensembles, passion is misunderstood as edgyness, even loudness... Not with these guys, and still, you hear every bit of emotion your supposed to hear. All pieces all my favorites, ALL of them, no exception. Juliane Banse is captivating, and together this gang of music makers is unstoppable. Legend has it that even the old von Karajan approved their performances (the Maestro in the Salzburg audience!). I am sure that these days also Sir Simon will concur...
Before coming Caracas.......2001-05-21
I am in Caracas with the MD of this disc. I have been a fun of this team, and at this time, this disc gives me a right guidance to South America. The style of the play fits quite well for the Latin music. One remark is that if you buy this CD in Japan, you can hear another marvellous Soplano.
Lovely music lovingly played.......2000-06-27
Some music, as Bacon wrote about books, is to be merely tasted and others digested. Many people ask me for music that can be played at parties (loud ones or sedate, indoors or out?), but seldom for music that stimulates the little gray cells. A recent EMI release falls sort of between the two poles.
7243 5 5656981 2) features the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic and soprano Juliane Banse performing some unfamiliar (to most of us) works by Villa-Lobos, Kaiser-Lindemann, Piazolla, Granda, Ben, Salgan, and Bacharach (!).
For me, the highlight is the beautifully sung Aria and Danca from the "Bachianas Brasleiras No. 5." Ms. Bancer's other vocal contribution is "The Kid in Blue Jeans" which is very reminiscent of the "girl on the curb" songs with which Piaf used to break your heart.
All in all, this is a lovely offering and the texts of the songs are included in the usual several languages.

Absolutely necessary in any Jazz Collection.......2000-07-06
This was the first Schifrin CD I ever bought ... as a result of this decision, a lot of money has since changed hands. Great solid introduction to the music from mission:impossible, previously unreleased material along with great recordings of various soundtracks. Top tracks include 'The Cat' from Jimmy Smith, and 'Jim on the Move' for it's shuffle. As a result of listening to this CD you will SURELY then buy 'Bullitt', 'Bossa Nova Groove' and the original 'CAT'. This is all wrapped up in a great inlay with interesting reading and photos.... enjoy!
