Augie March is a band whose very name was poached from perhaps THE great American novel, to give the people of America an inkling of the underside of Australia. In 2002, the band had set up camp in a disused telephone company building in outer Melbourne to write the album that would become Strange Bird. It covers a lot of sonic terrain, veering from the sweet, building harmony of The Vineyard, through the Wild West gallop of This Train, the heavy Song in the Key of Chance and muted melancholy of O Mi Sol Mi Lon to the plaintive balladry of The Night is A Blackbird, and that’s all in the first twenty minutes. It was released in Australia in October 2002 and did great things. A few insightful American music journalists from Rolling Stone to The Big Takeover to the All Music Guide have caught wind of the release and have already signed on as their champions.The rest of the world is about to catch up. The US release of Strange Bird contains the award winning videos for "The Vineyard" and "Little Wonder."

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description

Augie March is a band whose very name was poached from perhaps THE great American novel, to give the people of America an inkling of the underside of Australia. In 2002, the band had set up camp in a disused telephone company building in outer Melbourne to write the album that would become Strange Bird. It covers a lot of sonic terrain, veering from the sweet, building harmony of The Vineyard, through the Wild West gallop of This Train, the heavy Song in the Key of Chance and muted melancholy of O Mi Sol Mi Lon to the plaintive balladry of The Night is A Blackbird, and that's all in the first twenty minutes. It was released in Australia in October 2002 and did great things. A few insightful American music journalists from Rolling Stone to The Big Takeover to the All Music Guide have caught wind of the release and have already signed on as their champions.The rest of the world is about to catch up. The US release of Strange Bird contains the award winning videos for "The Vineyard" and "Little Wonder."

I was going to only give it four stars but............2006-03-12

A year and half since I first bought it and still discovering how good this album is. The depth and richness of both the lyrics and music are simply unparalleled by any contemporary band I've heard. The new album is finally out....living in the States, I'll have to wait a little while for it to arrive. So for the past few weeks I've been listening to this one a lot, and developing a newer, deeper appreciation.
I heard the last 30 seconds or so of "Train" on the radio while flipping through the stations. Made it a point to stay on the station after it was over, to get the band's name. Oggie Mark, or something. Made a mental note to not forget it-the song was too cool and I had to hear the whole thing. Haven't heard them on U.S. radio more than twice since. Went home, went on amazon, typed up the name and- ah- Augie March, from a Saul Bellows novel. Underground Australian band. Read the reviews for this album and figured it was worth the $14.00 or so. Haven't looked back since.
I think the crown jewel of Augie's music is definitely the lyrics. Glen Richards' love of-and mastery of- language is apparent throughout the album. I would go so far as to say, if there was such a thing as virtuoso lyricism, this is it. Glen uses grammar, vocabulary, rhyme, etc., to bend and polish the lines of each song into uncommonly vivid and breathtaking imagery. Every word is necessary, carefully chosen; each song has it's own logic, it's own resolution. I'm no expert on poetry, but a while ago it became a sort of high compliment to call rock musicians "poets"- from Dylan & Morrison to Eminem & Tupac. Well sir, this is poetry. It borders on affectation- lots of "O'"s and "a'"s- and sometimes crosses the line- "Brundisium" (awesome song, but some of the lyrics don't quite do it for me) and particulary "O Song" (I just think songs about songwriting are the height or pretense)- I feel are examples of that. And I'll be honest- I will probably never know what some songs are about ("There's something at the bottom of the Black Pool"- cool imagery, no idea what he's talking about). From what I've gathered Glen is very well read and a lot of these lyrics allude to the works of authors like T.S. Elliot. Again, that might be a wee bit pretenious.
But this is ok; because as high-fallutin' as the lyrics are, what gives them weight is the incredible music. Effortlessly diverse- from jazz to folk to heavy-retro-psychedelic-whatever. Never sounds forced or contrived, and utterly devoid of cliche or filler. I hear Pink Floyd mainly, also The Beatles, maybe a little Radiohead. Like all great pop music, it's when the lyrics and music intertwine and feed off of each other that the best results are achieved. And the results are sublime....I feel the best tracks on the album are "Train" and "Little Wonder". "Train" is just the best song of this century (that I've heard) and on track to be one of my favorite songs ever. Absolutely timeless. And "Little Wonder"- well the last verse of that song.... with the terribly sad, almost disturbingly vivid lyrics juxtaposed with the bittersweet lullaby-like melody...well, you just have to hear it. Other standout tracks include "The Vineyard", "O Mi So Li Lon/Song in the Key...", and especially "The Drowning Dream" (although again- no clue on the lyrics, except that there are very dreamy). I dig the heavier and psychedelic stuff the most.
So why almost only 4 stars, after all this gushing? Like most albums today, it's too long. A record with 8 great songs is superior to one with 8 great and 4 mediocre! There are a couple songs I wouldn't miss if they weren't included. And there are flow problems....The lilting "Little Wonder" works great after the manic ride of "Train"- but then you have another, even slower song in "The Night is a Blackbird". Beautiful song, but a bit of a pill. And the middle of the album kind of drags with several mid-tempo, jazzy songs in a row. Good songs- I love "The Keepa"- but one after the other like that-kind of a drag.
But in spite of this, I have to give it 5 stars. The other day I was listening to "Addle Brains"- an ok song- and the lyrics just clicked- it's about a homeless man and apathy. Now I have a whole new appreciation for the song. That is what I mean about the depth of this album....over a year later and I'm still discovering it. It's not like I've been listening to it straight for a year and half, but every few months I get the urge and dive right in. That is worth 5 stars. If you can't tell, I highly recommend it....a unique and beautiful experience awaits you. No matter what music you're into (I'm an 80's Metal/Classic Rock guy!). Get it! Now!

Diverse, certainly..........2005-11-21

This one is a little disappointing after the band's first album, Sunset Studies. Their debut album was dreamy and beautiful, whereas Strange Bird is a bit more abrasive. Songs like "The Drowning Dream" harken back to the first album but a stark contrast can be heard in songs like "Song in the Key of Chance". Glen's lyrics are still in fine form, but the delivery of the songs has changed. Sunset Studies was like snuggling under the covers on a winter's night. Strange Bird is... well, it's hard to say. Being up too early the next morning, perhaps. Pretty, with a frost on the ground... Shiny, glinting, polished. Definitely more polished. And the songs are much more diverse. Where Sunset Studies was held together by a definite mood, Strange Bird veers all over the place. Jazzy upbeat songs like "Keepa" nestle between slower, plodding songs like "The Night is a Blackbird". My favourite songs are those melodic, dynamic songs at the end of the album, namely "Drowning Dream", "Sunstroke House", and "Brundisium". Also a standout is the rollicking "This Train is Taking No Passengers".

Overall, second to Sunset Studies, but still highly recommended.

Undiscovered genius.......2005-09-28

What. An. Album. What. A. Band.

Seriously, if you haven't heard of this band, go out and by both of their albums now. Go on, I'll wait for you. They are probably one of the greatest bands in the world at the moment. And their new album comes out this year. Yippee!

I'm not quite sure how to describe this music. Indie-folk-pop, perhaps? Well, it's an extremely diverse album. One second you are listening to the chamber pop of The vineyard, the next song This train will be taking no passengers sounds like a lost Pogues number. Glenn Richards (the lead singer and songwriter) has a real way with words. He scatters literary references throughout his songs. His songs are gems of melodic beauty, complex without losing sight of what makes a song enjoyable -- a great tune.

Album of the year no doubt.

Gift from Heaven.......2005-04-17

The path taken includes ISB, Love, Mike Oldfield, Modest Mouse, Wilco, Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire....If any of those appeal to you, give this CD a try. I sound rather objective, but my spirits are so elegantly lifted by oh, such a magnificent band of individuals. The music is clearly heavenly, craftly blending voice and instruments for an amazing journey into gorgeous dramatic music. These guys are for real. I treasure this music.

The real deal!.......2002-12-13

Michelle opened for an Indigo Girls concert I attended this week and I was completely blown away by her talent...I had never heard of her before. Her voice was magical, her songs "real" and touching, and her spirit was refreshing. I immediately bought this CD and have been hooked ever since. Her voice and style are a mix between Norah Jones and Janis Joplin...totally unique and original. Thank God there are female artists like this around to provide us decent musical fufilment. Buy this CD, you will love it!

Amazing Album.......2002-06-13

This is the first Michelle Malone album I have ever bought. I have heard her sing on some Indigo Girls' records so I thought I would give her a try. This is such a great record with lyrics I can relate to and a great variety. Michelle has a sweet voice and a real talent for poetry. I recommend this album highly! Definitely a must have!

Without a doubt, this is Malone's strongest effort. In a word of fast food, fast guitar, and flash-in-the-pan dance dollies taking over radio, Malone is a refreshing, relaxing and much needed musical break from the mainstream. Her duet with Indigo Girl Emily Saliers, "Strength for Two" is vocally rich and lush...her guitar playing is clean and impeccable. You can't go wrong with this disc. Kill your radio and support independent music!

Homegrown showcases Michelle's diverse musical style.......2000-08-17

Wow! I must say that Homegrown doesn't need any improvement! From the beautiful harmonies of Strength for Two (backed by Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls) to the powerful lyrics in Brand New Dream, Michelle took no shortcuts with her latest. I highly reccommend it to anyone who has a taste for folk, rock, or female vocalists.

I bought this CD after hearing her in concert. Michelle Malone has a powerful voice with a folksy, revved-up sound. She can also play a mean guitar and harmonica - at the same time!

Good album from (hopefully) an up-and-comer.......2002-01-25

"New Experience" is a good solo debut album for Malone, with an eclectic mix of folk acoustic and popy rock songs. Though in more recent years Michelle has opted for a more hardcore blusey-rock sound, this album has a more sedate feel. If you like Sheryl Crow or Melissa Ethride-esque rock, "New Experience" would be a great addition to your CD library.

Album Description

Strange Bird is the wonderful album from Augie March! Recorded at Sing Sing in Melbourne with Chris Thompson & in Sydney at Megaphon with Paul McKercher & Big Jesusburger with Chris Townend respectively. Strange Bird is more concise than the epic 'Sunset Studies', yet covers more sonic terrain. It veers from the sweet, building harmony of 'The Vineyard', through the Wild West gallop of 'This Train', the heavy 'Song in the Key of Chance' & muted melancholy of 'O Mi Sol Mi Lon' to the plaintive balladry of 'The Night is A Blackbird', & that's all in the first half hour. Like its predecessor, Strange Bird includes two tracks recorded by the band themselves (O Mi Sol Li Lon & Sunstroke House), originally meant as demos but which ended up making the grade. BMG. 2004.

This is a tough album to categorize, with so many influences and cross-genre performances. I'm almost hesitant to throw out comparative bands as most people do so to say that the band is therefore "unoriginal" and thus less of a band because they sound like someone else.

In reality, everything in music has basically been done before. The challenge is to create something that stands out for being honest and heartfelt. One look at the liner notes for this album and you'll be blown away by the sheer storytelling involved with each song. Man, this stuff is pure poetry, as exhibited on the barn-burning romp of "This Train Will be Taking No Passengers":

Not really sure what all of that means, but when was the last time you heard lyrics like that from a rock band?

The amazing thing, however, is that these aren't lyrics of self-indulgence plastered over a melancholy tune. This particular song kicks some serious as* and it took me until about the fourth listen to the album that I really started paying attention to the meaning of each tune.

Without going overboard, this album reminds me of walking into a museum and seeing an amazing painting that you've perhaps seen a picture of. You instantly recognize certain elements of it, but you spend the next five hours trying to figure out every nuance because you're hooked. Well, this album should be hanging in the Louvre or the Uffizi Gallery, because it's that good.

I will take great delight in recommending this album to everyone I know and I suspect it will go down as one of the best albums of this new Century.

Can't recommend it enough. A "6-star" album if there ever was one.

Strange Bird is without a doubt the best album I've had the pleasure of listening to in months. I'd like to give it some sort of broad blanket statement, like "Strange Bird is soft and heartfelt", or "Strange Bird is desperate and exciting", but the album has a depth of texture and tone that simply shrugs off any sort of generalization. This is the sound of a band that has found itself as a lyrical and muscal powerhouse, like a superhero exploring his newly found superpowers. A beauty to behold.

Breathtaking and life changing.......2004-02-15

It will touch your soul whether the lyrics make sense to you or not. We have heard albums such as Coldplay's Parachutes and some Radiohead classics but this truely leaves every other album for dead. This is real heart touching, mind altering music and personally I have listened to it often for 14 months straight and am still discovering favourite riffs and vocal effects that are addictive and only get better with more and more and more and more listens! Each song is varied in style and songs such as the dulcet 'The Night is a Blackbird', upbeat swinging 'Song in the Key of Chance' and the banjo beauty 'Sunstroke House' are enchanting to say the very least. It would be an insult to not mention'Little Wonder'when reviewing this album, for it ascends into a swirling melody that will stay inside you always. They are just four of the thirteen treats wrapped up for you here. If you have heard sunset studies you would have got this one already and realise it improves up it. If you haven't heard of the before. just get it.

Though I am an Aussie, and listen to a lot of Australian bands, I must confess that most of the music is bland and derivative. Even within their native country, Augie March are relatively obscure. They don't deserve to be. Strange Bird, and its predecessor, Sunset Studies, are two of the most brilliant, original, diverse and intelligent records you're likely to hear.

This album covers everything from blues, folk and jazz to rock and punk. Glenn Richards' lyrics are outstanding, seemingly steeped in the traditions of Australian poets like Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson. Even when you don't quite know what they mean, they possess that rare poetic quality. Each song is delicately arranged and surprisingly complex. This album really shows up how restricted and narrow minded the English indie rock scene is - bands like Muse, Radiohead and Elbow would kill for a record like this.

This album is a must - even if just for the artwork.

I've been fortunate enough to see Michelle Malone in concert once. In addition to being a great songwriter, she is an amazing live performer. Her talent and energy really come through on this compilation of recent live recordings, Strange Bird Vol. 3. It features a great, diverse mix of some of her best songs ranging from the electrified, rock sound of "Grace" to her stripped-down acoustic cover of the Rolling Stones song "Wild Horses." If you're a fan of Michelle Malone, this CD will be one of your new favorites. If you're unfamiliar with her, it would be a great way to get hooked on this great musician.
