About the Artist
Twinemen are Dana Colley, Billy Conway, and Laurie Sargent. Twinemen are a new band that combine improvisation and organic soul chemistry with a deep respect for the song to create music that is difficult to describe, and yet resonates with a warm sense of familiarity. The manifesto was to continue to create unusual music, and Dana and Billy have a credible history of just that from their years with the band Morphine. Twinemen were brought together after the death of their friend and bandmate, Mark Sandman, leaving Dana and Billy without the band they had been a part of for ten years, with five records, (Rykodisc,Dreamworks )a Grammy nominated video and relentless worldwide touring. This is their first original project since Morphine. In the year after Mark's death they put together Orchestra Morphine, a nine piece rollicking celebration of the work of Morphine, and toured the US and Italy. One of the members of Orchestra Morphine was singer Laurie Sargent, and with her the seeds were sown for the music that would become Twinemen.

Album Description

Originally thought of as simply a black metal super group, Norway's Arcturus, had the guts to incorporate traditional melody, keyboards, vocal experimental and melodrama into their sinister theatrics. Now on their fourth full-length release, they have become the premiere progressive, avant-garde art band. Season Of Mist. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute perfection.......2007-05-20

Being a Dimmu Borgir fan, I purchased this work solely on the merits of Simen Hestnaes' vocal work with that band, as well as that of the inimitable Hellhammer.Sideshow Symphonies has invaded every cell of my being, and simply eclipses everything I've heard in a long time. Each piece is a flawless exploration of psychological alienation and profound inner musings. All of these musicians have combined their considerable talents to create an irreplaceable masterwork, and I for one cannot get enough! Please do buy a copy of "Shipwrecked in Oslo", the DVD live performance of this and previous Arcturus works.Their brand of Satanic tongue in cheek is refreshing in a genre that can get a bit too pompous.

5 out of 5 stars Tis a pretty good album. It gets a thumbs up from me........2006-12-30

I've heard a lot of people say they do not like this album at all. Most say so just because Kristoffer is no longer doing vocals. But to be honest Simen sounds pretty similar, and the album as a whole reminds me of The Sham Mirrors.

I've pretty much enjoyed every Arcturus album with the exception of Aspera Hiems Symphonia, and I still liked that album, just did not dig the grumbly, growly vocals in it, but musicly ir was good too. Sideshow Symphonies imo is a lot like La Masquerade. Even has some similar song itles. Its also a lot like The Sham Mirrors, and musicly its a lot like it too.

Any fan of Arcturus I would recommend this album to. Don't let the fact that Simen is now doing vocal work turn you away. He's good! Very good even. Pick up Sideshow Symphonies and have a couple listens, and you will probably agree with me on it.

4 out of 5 stars Remarkable Progressive Futuristic metal.......2006-08-12

One of the main reasons why I have checked out the great music of Arcturus is because Hellhammer (Jan Axel Von Blomberg) is the drummer. His drumming work is elite and he worked with Mayhem for a long time. Currently, besides Arcturus, he works with Winds, Antestor, and Dimmu Borgir. Arcturus play a distinct style of avant garde metal that is futuristic and theatric. This is also the debut full time performance from Simen 'Vortex' Hestnæs, the former frontman of Borknagar and current bassist of Dimmu Borgir.

Sideshow Symphonies starts out with an elegant track, 'Hibernation Sickness Complete.' Vortex' vocals are beautiful. This is one of the best songs on the album. 'Shipwrecked Frontier Pioneer' is a long song (8 minutes) and has attractive female vocals with Vortex' vocal theatrics in the background. 'Demon Painter' has supreme singing from Vortex and great guitar and drum work. 'Moonshine Delirium' is a haunting track that sounds theatrical.

Arcturus have quietly moved forward from the days when Garm lead the show. Garm has been working a lot on his own band, Ulver and could not continue with Arcturus. Hellhammer's drumming on this album shows is great diversity as a great musician. Vortex' clean vocals are stunning and I hope he does them for the next album from Arcturus. Fans who enjoy avant garde metal will like this material, along with fans of Vortex and Hellhammer. This music is quite unlike anything I have heard in metal, but it is quite delightful.

5 out of 5 stars Where Nightmares come to life........2006-05-22

Honestly, When I heard Garm had left Arcturus, I thought this album would be crap. But I was so wrong. Simen "ICS Vortex" Hestnæs (ex-Borknagar, Dimmu Borgir) is the perfect replacement and fits perfectly with Arcturus' dark-celestial-avant-garde-neo-classical-experimental-atmospheric-theatrical-nightmare-black-metal theme perfectly. The resonance of his voice is smooth, yet shrilling, and his singing style just has that wacky, insane feeling to it, without going totally off-the-wall and sounding stupid. Garm did the same thing; Simen just fits to the rest of the band ridiculously well. He even has that wicked, creepy cackle he does once in a while. I honestly keep thinking of phantom of the opera when I listen to this... a dark, twisted, modern live musical gone horribly wrong.

Compared to previous Arcturus releases though, this is a bit more calm... not so much double-bass, heavy guitar riffing, black metal-style vocals madness. It's much more progressive and experimental, but a good portion of Arcturus' music has always been like that so it shouldn't be surprising or disappointing to dedicated fans. The song structures and lyrics are brilliant and creative as always. There are lots of pianos and keyboards with several different tones, string instruments, and various celestial swirling noises and rhythms, not to mention the incredible drumming by Hellhammer as always. It seems like the guitars and bass are a little less prominent to emphasize the many other aspects. There are a few angelic female vocals (by Silje Wergeland) here and there, and quite a bit of Simen harmonizing with himself to give even more of that evil-theatre feeling.

"Hibernation Sickness Complete," is possibly my favorite song; it begins with the most gradual and eerie opening, for 30 seconds or so, before Vortex's phantasmal vocals break through and don't hesitate to send chills down the listener's spine, with cosmic keyboard tones and melodies quivering beneath the brilliant guitar riffs. After a while, a sudden, unexpected rupture of heaviness terrorizes the flow of the song with inhumanly fast drumming and nightmarish piano chords atop distant synth melodies. The song ends with the some of the only death vocals on the entire album.

"Evacuation Code Deciphered" is probably my second favorite, starting with orchestral violin plucking among more low-pitched strings, the vocals are somewhat half-talking, half-singing, moving through many different experiments in between verses, including a barrage of evil laughing, breakdowns to emphasize many different keyboard melodies and solos, or guitar riffs, eventually getting to the deathly beautiful harmonization of Simen and Silje. "Reflections" is almost an instrumental that focuses on the absolutely stunning drum work of Hellhammer a lot, containing some haunting chanting near the end.

I'd say if you like your metal extremely experimental, and if you liked previous Arcturus releases, you will almost certainly enjoy this gem.

5 out of 5 stars Cannot label this great masterful piece of art!.......2006-04-06

Let's clear one thing up right now. You do NOT have to be a black metal fan in the least to enjoy this freaking masterpiece! I will admit I have one bias. THE VOCALS OF HESTNAES! To me he has the most powerfully majestic voice in all of music! This album is a journey that you take to other vistas in your mind. If you are a fan of progressive black metal in the vein of Borknagar,Solefald, and Age of Silence, order this album because I am sure most conventional cd stores dont carry it. Long live Hestnaes! Support eclectic, brilliant music like ARCTURUS.

Album Description

The Electric Prunes have always been a California band. Screaming out of the late 60's their pulsating music captured the hope and angst of a drifting generation. Well the drifting is back, and so are the Electric Prunes! Perhaps to the rescue!

From the minute you "come flying", as the lyric suggests on the introduction, this seminal band delivers the goods. 13 surprising new flame-laden psych tracks melt your speakers with "Prune" trademark fuzz, twang, tremolo and mayhem. For those that thought the 60's were over.....hang onto your wah wah!

Not some rehash or recreation of a time past, this is the real thing played as only the "real people" can play it. The "California" of the 60's is found at the end of some gloriously simple songs, memorable riffs and a sense that each track is actually taking place in some cosmic vortex of a past time. This record sounds just like 1967!

Legendary Moby Grapeist Peter Lewis joins the band for some vintage 60's guitar work on "Rickenbacker 12 String", an ode to that very special "California made" 12 string guitar.

California mixes some cool Rudi Protrudi abstract guitar artwork on the cover, with a range of images from a touring musician losing his pants in France (49 SONGS), to a guy that can't leave his flipped out girlfriend because he just tattooed her name on his bum (Rosy made me crazy). Face it, all pertinent topics.

"California" is Escapist Surfing, the Hollywood Movie Business, Famous Friends, even an ass kicking Tidal Wave. This CD leaves no doubt in what is left of anyone's mind that the Electric Prunes were, and are, anchors for a drifting generation. Man the lifeboats!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The sixties are alive.......2007-02-04

Moby Grapist Peter Lewis' voice may have lost a bit of its edge, but his chops are still solidly in the sixties. SLIDESHOW CHARADE is the album's standout track. Other excellent cuts are PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE, an ode to surfing and the Beach Boys, and the group's tribute to the Byrds THE RICKENBACKER 12 STRING. An excellent Psychedelic/garage flavored album that would have fit seemlessly as an August, 1967 release. Hopefully, there are more jems of this ilk to follow.

5 out of 5 stars The Electric Prunes - California.......2007-01-21

Price and shipping to Australia was just great. You blokes are the duck's guts.(Thats a good thing)

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Masterpiece.......2006-09-15

I always hoped for a reunion of the Electric Prunes, but never expected it to happen. After the ecstatic shock wore off, when I heard they were back, I worried that like most bands they would comeback in a vain attempt to either resell their old stuff, or make music to fit into the current commercial trend. Wow, what a happy surprise. They came back more psychedelic than ever. Old prune albums had a few great songs on them and then some failed experiments. This album is solidly great all the way thru. They merely picked up where they left off and went a few steps further. I always wondered what they could have done if only they stayed together. Well here it is at last. I especially like the songs Rewired and Cinema Verite, which is kind of a spooky tune. I hope they contunue to experiment and go further out there where no band has gone before. I believe many of these songs could have been hit singles back in the day. I hope in the future they forget the psychedelic pop idea and launch into epic voyages of mental transmutation, transformation; you get it, real psychedelic adventures. If you like the Electric Prunes or psychedelic music at all, then you really need to get this album. If you never heard psychedelic music this is the perfect place to start. It is a real treat, a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Back to the 60's.......2005-07-23

It was great to hear the familiar sound that the Electric Prunes had in the 60's. Yes, the voices have changed. Age does that. But the quality of their voices has not deteriorated. The freshness of the songs combined with the old sound just kind of takes you back again to when you heard "Too Much to Dream" and "Kyrie Elaison" for the first time. That signature psychedlic sound is still there and it's great to hear.

5 out of 5 stars It's Like They never Left!.......2004-08-27

Often, when bands get back together after many years apart, they find that the old magic somehow eludes them. They become little more than a sad nostalgia-fest. But not so the Prunes! With the "California" CD, they somehow take that old 60s/psychedelic/punk/surf thing they did so well and bring it into the 21st century. It really is like they never split up in the first place!

Honestly, there is not a weak cut on this record. But, that said, I do, of course, have my favorites: "Slideshow Charade" with its bizzare harmonies effectively sets the 60s-never-ended-and-they're-still-great tone; "Pacific Ocean Blue" is a delightful paean to the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, with an intriguing musical/melodic structure; "Rewired" (great pun) is terrific riff rock; "Tidal Wave" with its infectuous melody and guitar hooks simply demands radio play (programmers please take note). It's all here: the distorted stratocasters; wammy bars; tremolo; engaging, flowery lyrics; and plain old---if I may use the phrase---innocent fun.

The Electric Prunes have pulled off the nearly impossible: they have managed to preserve and update their sound to make it even better and more original than the music they first made together all those years ago.

If you happen to run into them somewhere, please give them a hearty thanks and handshake for me.

5 out of 5 stars Reggae singer remembered for Sideshow.......2005-03-14

Barry Biggs was a balladeer with a distinctive falsetto voice. He scored a UK top three hit with Sideshow and had five minor UK hits, of which Three ring circus was the most successful - it just missed the top twenty. The others are Work all day, You're my life, What's your sign girl and Wide awake in a dream.

All of Barry's UK hits are here together with Barry's covers of other pop classics. The inclusion of three Stylistics covers (Let's put it all together, Stone in love with you, You'll never get to heaven) reminds us that Barry has a voice with some similarities to their lead singer, Russell Thompkins, though they are sufficiently different that you wouldn't mistake one for the other. Barry is also particularly suited to singing Too much heaven (Bee Gees) and Have you seen her (Chi-Lites).

Barry had many number one hits in his native Jamaica and they are all here, but he only made a limited impact in the UK and I'm not sure if he made it in America at all. Still, I enjoy his brand of mellow reggae music and I've not come across any other singer quite like him.

5 out of 5 stars Mellow reggae music.......2005-03-29

Barry Biggs was a balladeer with a distinctive falsetto voice. He scored a UK top three hit with Sideshow and had five minor UK hits, of which Three ring circus was the most successful - it just missed the top twenty. The others are Work all day, You are my life, What's your sign girl and Wide awake in a dream.

All of Barry's UK hits are here together with Barry's covers of other pop including Love goes where my Rosemary goes (Edison Lighthouse), Reflections of my life (Marmalade), My Cherie amour (Stevie Wonder) and Have you seen her (Chi-Lites).

Barry had many number one hits in his native Jamaica and they are all here, but he only made a limited impact in the UK and I'm not sure if he made it in America at all. Still, I enjoy his brand of mellow reggae music and I've not come across any other singer quite like him.

        4 out of 5 stars A good showpiece of Iluvatar's live work........1998-06-18

Released in 1997, supposedly as something to tied us over until a release of a full album, "Sideshow" offers some great examples of what the band is capable of on stage. "Funk Massage" is truely outstanding, and in my opinion a better version than the original studio cut. Iluvatar's cover of the Who's "Sparks" is without equal. After hearing this disk, I'm tempted to travel to the East Coast just to hear them live. Even with a bonus track (several minutes of annoying silence before the unpublished cut appears), I highly recommend this album. Keep up the good work, guys!

4 out of 5 stars Great Compositions, but dark.......2007-05-15

I can't ignore the 2000 reviewer of this CD. Yes, this band sounds (and looked) dark, with bass, tuba, trombone, and cello making up half of the bold souls. Using Ornette Coleman's famous dirge "Lonely Woman" as the only standard doesn't brighten things up, either.

However, this is not a CD to pass by. Edward Wilkerson, former chairman of the Chicago-based Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM) is a first rate composer, arranger, and tenor saxophonist. I should know, having sold him two huge printers for his orchestral scores, and having heard him dozens of times at Chicago's Velvet KLounge or with his "Shadow Vignettes" Orchestra. Eight Bold Souls is his favorite venue for his compositions. His musicians have a loyalty to the group not seen since some of the core musicians of Duke Ellington's band or Sun Ra's Arkestra. (Tuba player Aaron Dodd, who played with the Pharoahs and Donny Hathaway is now fighting to leave a nursing home for mental patients).

This may not be easy listening music, but is well worth checking out. This is almost as good as the same group's "Ant Farm".

4 out of 5 stars Open Your Ears.......2006-07-26

How can a self-described music fan dismiss ANY attempt at serious music? I have recently discovered this group and, upon a little investigation, was able to learn about their origins, their music, and their discography. I have only heard SOME, and that from a friend's self-made CD(and not this particular album in whole) but I want more, more, more. They're terrific!
From what I have listened to, belongs on the shelves next to David Murray or the Arts Ensemble of Chicago. Its wit reminds me of the often-sidesplitting output of Willem Breuker, and the musicianship is first-rate.

1 out of 5 stars too much dark jazz.......2000-06-28

i love jazz but i can't stand dark jazz. sideshow is just not a groundbreaking cd in my mind. all the songs need to get out of the dark and get some light. i'm mad now.
