4 out of 5 stars 3 or 4 of the best 1960's Tunes! .......2005-03-17

I still have the original LP FEVER TREE from 1967, and those tunes comprise most of the first 10 songs here. Given that this is a practically unknown album and band, some of these orchestral based songs are as timeless as you can get for the music of that era! Listen to UNLOCK MY DOOR, COME WITH ME, SUN ALSO RISES, and FILIGREE AND SHADOW (before this song turns into a loud psychedelic blaster). One would be hard put to find such a fine group of folky, lavishly done songs from any era. Even the lyrics are miles above most of the silliness from that era. And strong vocals to boot! Much of the rest is second rate, which is why I only give 4, and not 5 stars. Still a near masterful CD which easily stands the test of time!

2 out of 5 stars --.......2004-01-26

This might be the most useless re-issue I've ever seen. If you already have the 'Fever Tree/Another Time Another Place' compilation, then don't even consider buying this one, and if you don't have it, get it instead. The negativity I'm projecting at this release is not intended towards the band and its music, it's towards the shady label that put it out.

Here's the indictment:

The first ten tracks on this release are from Fever Tree's debut record, 'Fever Tree'. Okay, but those were already widely available. Even though it's not listed on the track listing, 'Where Do You Go?' is included, it's just counted as part of 'Imitation Situation'. Also, the tracks are not in the running order of the original record - they're all mixed up into an inferior arrangement.

After the 'Fever Tree' tracks come the songs 'Grand Candy, Young Sweet' and 'Don't Come Crying To Me' from their second record, 'Another Time Another Place'. There's no explanation for the inclusion of these two songs and nothing else from that record - especially confusing since those two songs aren't the best from 'Another Time Another Place'.

Also tacked on to this sham of a release are four tracks from the dubious 'Live at Lake Charles 1978' album: 'Puppet Master', 'You Don't See Me', 'Party Anytime' (written by Al Jarreau(!)), and a re-do of 'San Francisco Girls' that sounds like it was recorded by the house band at your local bar. The only original member on the 'Live at Lake Charles 1978' record was guitarist Michael Knust. If Knust wanted to continue making music after Fever Tree, fine, but don't call it Fever Tree. And furthermore, record companies: don't play along with it. Not only is the addition of these false Fever Tree songs in bad taste, but it's also unlawful because the back cover states for everyone to see: 'Original Release: '68-'70'. That's misleading and flat-out lying to the consumer.

Then there's the liner notes. It takes the Gear Fab folks only three paragraphs to explain 'The Fever Tree Story', with the last of the three dedicated to the 'Live At Lake Charles 1978' record. Thanks for clearing everything up for us, Gear Fab.

If you don't own any Fever Tree music yet, they were an above-average early hard-rock/psych band whose producers forced string arrangements down their throat on their debut record, although the strings are not unpleasant. The group's middle-aged management/production team of Scott and Vivian Holtzman wrote nearly all their original material, including the minor hit 'San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)'. It could be argued that 'Where Do You Go?', from their first, and best, album was the Guess Who's reference point for 'American Woman' with its slicing guitar sustain and Dennis Keller's tough, gravelly vocals.

Their second record, 'Another Time Another Place', sported a harder edge that the group felt they needed to show due to feedback from their fans who didn't think their first record was representative of their live performances. If that was the case then I'm glad their first album wasn't live because then I wouldn't really like Fever Tree at all. 'Death Is the Dancer' is the best thing on 'Another Time Another Place' while 'Don't Come Crying To Me' is decent and 'I've Never Seen Evergreen' has a certain pleasing meditative quality. The group became progressively more ponderous and anonymous during the course of their recording output until the point that nobody really noticed when they called it quits in the early-'70s.

There are many positive reasons for getting the complete Peer Gynt music, as opposed to just the two suites. In the first place, if you like singing, you get the vocal parts. There's also a lot of really fine and exciting music that's not included in the suites. On the other hand, if dialogue in Norwegian makes you crazy (there isn't really that much of it), you might want to stick with the more traditional excerpts. This performance of the complete score is excitingly detailed, and extremely well played and sung by all the participants. I enjoy hearing the music in both forms, depending on my mood; perhaps you will too. --David Hurwitz

This 1988 account from Herbert Blomstedt and the San Francisco Symphony is rich and dramatic. Here is a conductor with a real feel for the music, and in his hands Grieg's multimovement score shows its emotional depth. The reading is well paced and brilliantly played, and London's crew provides a high-impact recording, very forward and with excellent detail. --Ted Libbey

4 out of 5 stars A must for Grieg fans.......2001-06-04

Because Grieg is one of my favorite composers, I was delighted to get the complete incidental music to Ibsen's play and not just the standard Suites 1 and 2. Blomstedt and the San Francisco Symphony do a fine job of conveying the many moods of Grieg's masterpiece. Listeners need to be prepared to hear singing and dialogue in Norwegian, but its inclusion gives the performance an operatic feel. For those of you familiar with Suites 1 and 2, give a listen to "Peer Gynt Hunted by the Trolls", a highly dramatic work;then, listen to the solemnity of "Blessed Morn" and "Solveig's Cradle Song". I think this CD will enhance your enjoyment of Peer Gynt all the more.

4 out of 5 stars I fell in love with the voice.......1999-04-28

Not much of a vocal fan (I'm into Bach & Mozort intrumental) I was scanning through the titles of this CD for the well know Mountain King part. It's all good & very professional, but when I heard the voice of Mari-Anne Haeggander in the track Solveigs' Song I was bowled over and very much reconciled with vocal music.

She mix's a perfect technical mastery with a just enough human touch to make it reall. The tiny imperfections when her voice goes up a big interval make it just perfect. Ceclia Bartoli (singing Mozart) was my favorite, but now Mari-Anne is.

I'm now urgently looking for more of her recordings, without luck so far. Pleas help.

For those of us who are aficionadoes of sixties music, Fever Tree must be considered one of the great lost bands of that era. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have seen one of their rare live shows, at Steamboat Springs club in Austin in early 1977, featuring original guitarist Michael Knust, singer Dennis Keller (one of the most underrated vocalists in rock history), and three new players. To make a long story short, the concert was sensational, the band playing with both presence and passion, choosing to encore (after some discussion) with the bluesy "What Time Did You Say It Is In Salt Lake City?" Sadly, this song is not included on San Francisco Girls: The Best of Fever Tree. Other FT classics that may be missed by rabid fans include "Wild Woman Ways," "Run Past My Window," "Man Who Paints the Pictures, Part II," and the stunning Beatles medley of "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out". Still, there are plenty of good tracks on this collection. Fever Tree is usually grouped together with other bands in the Psychedelic Rock category, and Michael's incredible guitar figures in the hit single "San Francisco Girls" leave no doubt of their trippy influences. However, Fever Tree was also one of the first (and best) rock bands to use strings and horns effectively. Just listen to the gentle string backing on "Unlock My Door," a most wonderful and unusual love song (reportedly taken from the Bluebeard pirate legend) to be sure. More powerful strings are at the core of "Sun Also Rises," aided by a vocal performance from Dennis so passionate it could make the sun rise by itself. And don't forget the incredible keyboard work of Rob Landes (would would surface years later as the musical director of a touring production of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) on such fabulous songs as "Catcher in the Rye" and "Come With Me (Rainsong)," the latter as beautiful a love song as ever been recorded. All this plus the fantastic "Imitation Situation I," featuring Bach's Toccata and Fugue morphing into the bluesy "Where Do You Go?;" and "Time Is Now," one of the very best songs (along with Simon and Garfunkle's classic "America") to sum up the heartbreak and angst of the sixties. I know this and other Fever Tree CD's are hard to find, but please search diligently for them. The symphonic/psychedelic/bluesy wonders which await you are truly worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Great West Coast Band........2003-07-30

My first time listening to Fever Tree was 1971 in Germany (USAF) man what a sound. I got an album from a friend and I played it over and over so many times I put new grooves in it, but I still have the album. Now I need some CD's. Who ever reads this listen to Iron Butterfly then listen to Fever Tree. What a RUSH.

One shudders at the number of good recordings of Vivaldi's Gloria available (such as the famous account, newly reissued, with Riccardo Muti), but this one is both superb and different. The entire disc is devoted to music composed for the homeless (or wayward) girls who lived at the Venetian Ospedali in the early 18th century and, in addition to a version of the Gloria in which women sing the bass and tenor lines an octave higher than composed, introduces us to very-little-known music by Giovanni Porta, Nicola Porpora, and Francesco Brusa. Once one adjusts to the lack of low voices, this CD surprises time and again with the quality and diversity of the lovely sounds actually made by the "girls" in this chorus. Clearly aware of the importance of various textures in polyphonic music, the chorus, under the leadership of Sharon Paul, pulls out all the stops: They whisper and caress; they exult at full voice. Tempi are nicely old-fashioned and slow in the Vivaldi, and all of the other music is worth hearing. This is a special CD, and an auspicious debut. Go for it. --Robert Levine

    Album Description

The recording is the first to feature adolescent female voices performing music sung by the young female orphans of the 18th century Venetian ospedali. The ospedali repertoire is considered to be the largest existing collection of music for female voices and is known for its great rhythmic vitality, vivid solo writing, and a clear tonal framework and musical form. In the 1300s, the ospedali began in Venice as homes for orphans and foundlings and later evolved into music conservatories for young girls. Ospedali choirs were the first to perform four-part music composed for girls voices and attracted top composers, including Vivaldi, who many scholars believe composed 'Gloria' specifically for female voices during his 30 years as concertmaster and violin teacher at the Ospedale della Pieta. The 65-minute recording features the 45-voice Chorissima, SFGC's large concert and touring ensemble; the 26-voice Ospedali Chorus, comprised of Virtuose, SFGC's small concert ! and touring ensemble, plus Chorus alumnae. The SFGC Sinfonia accompanies the choral ensembles and features some of the best early music players in the Bay Area.

The San Francisco Girls Chorus presents a musical tribute to the children who were victims of the Holocaust during World War II. This provacative choral work is based on poetry written by children who were interned in the ghetto of Terezin on their tragic journey to Auschwitz from 1941-1945. Many of the pieces are a cappella. Pianist Dwight Okamura accompanies the remainder.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent repertoire and beautifully performed.......2005-02-26

I think this is a fine representation of what young voices can do if properly trained and motivated. I am a middle school choral director, and I use this CD as an example for my students throughout the year. The Britten Ceremony of Carols is wonderfully performed, and the Rutter Personent Hodie is magnificent. I think my personal favorite is "More I Cannot Wish You," which is sensitive and very musical, but still retaining the simplicity of the original. If you are fed up with Christmas CD's that all sound the same, try this one on for size.
