Phantom Power

Editorial Reviews

New Musical Express
Gordon Downie seems convinced that his pained vocal style contains hidden poetic depths, but all his lyrics convey is an overwhelming desire to crawl back into the womb of a past where people didn't laugh at them quite so much.

A grim mood stalks the Super Furry Animals' spellbound sixth studio album, but, luckily, brilliant music spirits away the thematic gloom as florid semi-acoustic ballads and technicolor glam rock keeps the darkness at bay. Take "Hello Sunshine," a sleepy Beatles-esque number in which Gruff Rhys stands proud on a Freak Power ticket: "I'm a minger / You're a minger too / So come on mingers / I want to ming with you." When Phantom Power is bleak, it's startlingly so. The Stooges-like "Out of Control" is as dark as any Furries song to date. But more often this collection is playful: Rhys appropriates the language of blues and twists it in modern angles on the galloping, glammy "Golden Retriever," while "Slow Life" finds keyboardist Cian Ciaran's demonstrating a skill for electronic assimilation that's previously proved elusive. Sure, it's a jumble, but, like the Beatles' White Album, it hangs together. --Louis Pattison

3 out of 5 stars With apologies to Reznor, this marked the beginning of a true downward spiral.......2007-07-06

The Furries scale back the orchestral overhaul of their last effort for a more simplistic and natural sound on Phantom Power. But the effort occasionally suffers from snippets of glumness and slurring noise in the vocals. Maybe it's the Vedder disease, but considering how beautifully melodic a lot of these songs are, Gruff Rhys' energy seems exhausted, like he's going through the motions.

"Hello Sunshine" is sprightly, but sounds too pleading from the singing. "Golden Retriever" is a fine single and very catchy, but Rhys is simply marble-mouthed. Those sorts of vocals served them in the past (witness "Shoot Doris Day"), but not when they seem to be leaning more to New Pornographers than Beck/Blur. Luckily, they manage more than enough good moments to almost make up for it. "Slow Life" is a striking epic closer, "Out of Control" pulses with the energy lacking elsewhere, and "Piccolo Snare," while a bit lyrically obvious, contains joyous highs that are otherwise in short supply. But after the high of Rings (and knowing they'd stumble even deeper on Love Kraft) this is a band on the fast decline struggling to remain afloat.

Best cuts: "Slow Life," "Out of Control," "Golden Retriever," "The Piccolo Snare," "Valet Parking," "Liberty Belle," "Venus and Serena"

5 out of 5 stars Finally Able to Stop Listening A Year Later.......2005-08-11

I was firmly addicted to this album for about a year. These guys are incredible. I don't think the comparison to Pet Sounds is fair. Every new indie "masterpiece" that comes out is compared to Pet Sounds, and I'd hate to lump this in with the wave of indie sludge that is coming out right now. SFA have their own unique sound that combines brilliant, offbeat songwriting with great musicianship, and they just have a great ear for what sounds good. Why they haven't caught on more in the states, I don't know.

4 out of 5 stars Tragically The Other Phantom Power.......2005-03-09

As Hunter S. Thompson once said, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." This album is most definitely weird and was released at one of the weirdest times in human history. Destined to do quite poorly in the United States, it strikes at the main nerve of the post 9-11, in the end self-defeating, active defence lie and the capitalist fodder that fuels it. To go one further, the band has decreed the album carbon neutral and will plant enough trees to cover the ecological cost of the entire production run proving the band intends to stand behind its lyrics and not just abuse front page topics in search of controversy and the publicity that follows it [a lá Madonna]. They're in it for the long haul. Steeped in vocals reminiscent of the Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys cut with a droney Beta Band edge, this album has more psychedelic staples than you can exhale a bong hit at. There are heavily distorted and reverbed guitars, bizarre synth beeps and growls, haunting percussion work, sweeping orchestral arrangements, the occasional church organ, and much, much more.
Those who were not fans of their previous work will probably not like this either as, though it shows definite improvement, it progresses from where Rings Around The World left off. Likewise, those who avoid upbeat, harmonious choruses and country-influenced riffs and slide guitars should pass as well. Musically, this is three times as interesting as George Harrison's Brainwashed with more relevant and persuasive lyrics. Phantom Power lends itself nicely as a headphones album as layer upon layer of complexities and effects swirl dizzyingly from ear to ear. If you plan on doing any drugs before listening to this, wear a tight hat because it just may blow your mind. I'm still picking up the pieces of mine.

      5 out of 5 stars A grower..........2004-12-03

I always used to declare the Furries' debut as their essential masterpiece, never to be topped. Then I noticed that I listen to this one a lot more. Somehow it snuck into my top rotation and now refuses to leave. And I don't want to force it out. It's a lot more toned-down and mellow than their earlier work, which is something I really appreciate in the waning days of my youth here- I tend to care far more about the details of songcraft than energy for energy's sake these days. The details are what make this record. The addition of electrical beats at the end of track five, for example, and the way it builds through vocal harmonies into the chorus, is just beautiful. There are moments where we have country slide guitar, or blues riffs, or harmonies, or electronics, and it all sounds natural and organic. This band is vastly under-recognized, but I believe that they are one of the truly great bands of the modern era. Long may they thrive, and create music that is detailed, unique, catchy and artful (but not at all pretentious).

      4 out of 5 stars more like a 3.5.......2004-08-04

despite the relatively high rating, this record was one of the biggest disappointments of the year for me. it just doesn't hold a candle to its predecessor _rings around the world_, which was full of immediacy and memorable hooks. there's really nothing memorable at all on this one, though the songs are well-crafted and the album flows well. it's just, well, pleasantly forgettable, and for SFA, that means it's a failure. this one will slip through the cracks, and it will be the first SFA album to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome To Canada!.......2005-04-15

This band is the very essence of Canada.

The Tragically Hip make truly beautiful music and this CD is my personal favourite. For anyone just getting in to them, this is a great CD to start with. The other great introductory albums are Live Between Us (a good sampler plus the Hip are fantastic live), Road Apples (for the older Hip sound) and Trouble At The Henhouse (for "Ahead By A Century" alone).

For any existing Hip fan, this CD is an instant classic; a must own. Bobcaygeon is an Ontario anthem never to be surpassed, but every song on this release is a gem, most notably: Thomson Girl, Poets, Emporer Penguin and Travelling Man.

If ever anyone, anywhere goes to a cottage, they must bring: 1)Atleast one 2-4 of Canadian (or preferably Alexander Keith's or Moosehead) and 2) this CD. Nothing goes with the stars like a beer and Bobcaygeon. Nothing.

I definitely recommend this CD. If you don't like it, ILL give you your money back.*

5 out of 5 stars you yelled in my ear this music speaks to me.......2005-01-28

This is a great place to start if you're curious about the tragically hip. This is the type of album that brings the word "art" directly to mind. A truly original sound, very poetic. "Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man" is one of my favorite songs of all time. Check out all of the hip's music, but start with Phantom Power.

5 out of 5 stars wicked awesome Canada.......2004-02-13

i love this CD, all great songs. Although not as popular as some of theyre older music, i find this CD above thier others in my CD player the most. I Especially love Poets. If your Canadian, you should own at least one of the Hips albums. I'd suggest this should be it.

4 out of 5 stars "It was in Bobcaygeon that I saw the constellations...".......2003-11-15

"Phantom Power" is one of the Tragically Hip's most accessible records, and perhaps my sentimental favorite. It was released the year I was married (1998), and I rediscovered it during a period in my life when everything was on the upswing.

It's not the Hip's most adventurous work. But it's extremely well produced, with little to no filler and a good balance between upbeat rockers ("Save the Planet," "Fireworks"), mid-tempo grooves ("Poets," "Thompson Girl") and gentler compositions ("Bobcaygeon," "The Rules"). As always, Gordon Downie's idiosyncratic lyrics and vocal style are evident throughout, particularly on "Chagrin Falls" and "Emperor Penguin." On "Bobcaygeon," the highlight of this album and possibly the Hip's best song ever, Downie's enigmatic lyrics paint a picture that accumulates detail with every listen.

This CD is a good place to start for newcomers to The Tragically Hip, as well as a must-own for any fan of the band.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Hip Record- Hands Down........2003-09-04

Unlike a lot of Hip fans, I'm not a Canadian citizen who feels an obligation to love the National Band (which isn't a slam- I think it's great that Gord & the Boys benefit). What I am is a passionate music lover and poetry lover.

Simply put- Gord Downie is our modern Walt Whitman. If Walt were alive today, he'd be in a band and his band would be The Tragically Hip.

This record contains The Hip's best music, Gord's best lyrics, and their greatest song ("Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man").

For new fans, this is definitely the place to start.

Other standouts: "Emperor Penguin", "Poets" and "Fireworks".

I cannot possibly recommend this CD more highly.

I'm shocked people don't like this, it's not a one time thing though, upon coming back to it after a while I can see how it's a big more stripped down than their others, but it's still has the same charm, the same stylings and inklings that these guys are gonna keep making great stuff, I'm a fan of the band Home and after hearing this again see some similarities, it's a subtle sort of scratchy fuzz delivery, it's a unique and timeless sound, I don't know if Dave Fridmann is involved here, but it's got that touch to the recording to be sure.

4 out of 5 stars Every band starts somewhere.......2001-08-02

I enjoy this. Elf Power has progressed so much since this but without changing their sound. The guitars on here (which as a guitar player are what I really listen for) sound just like they do on The Winter Is Coming. A lot of these songs sound like prototypical versions of songs on that (amazing) album. Anyone who would give this 1 star shouldn't be listening to Elf Power or lo-fi music in general. At least listen to their later work to put this in perspective.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh. Sloppy and annoying E6 schlock........2001-07-21

This band gets a lot more attention than they deserve. EP band member Laura Carter is cozy cozy with NMH's Jeff Mangum. Well howdy hoody ho. Doesn't mean EP is great, or even bearable. If you are looking for some excellent Elephant 6 sounds- look elsewhere. The creme de la creme of the scene is Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control and Apples (in Stereo).

      4 out of 5 stars Give it a chance.......2000-09-21

OK, I know this isn't the greatest Elf Power album (my vote is for Red King for that one), but it's not that bad. It's got some cool tracks, i.e. Finally Free, Slither Hither, Monster Surprise, and the instrumentals, and it's cool to see where the band came from. If you're a new E.P. fan, get Red King and Dream in Sound first. But hardcore E.P. fans like myself should appreciate the roots of this great band. I can't wait for the new album. Everyone buy it!

      4 out of 5 stars Now, wait a minute.......2000-08-25

This is a reissue of their first vinyl-only LP and 7", and while the sound is VERY lo-fi, it shouldn't give any trouble to listeners familiar with Guided By Voices or My Bloody Valentine. True, their material has made leaps and bounds since this time, and this is really a Andrew Rieger solo album. But there are still many wonderful songs like "Temporary Arm" and "Monster Suprise". In fact, the entire "Winter Hawk" portion is excellent. You can already hear the progression. If you're an Elf Power fan, pick this up to find out how it all began.

      Album Description

      A PROG-ROCK EXTRAVAGANZA!

The music was composed and recorded especially for a 1990s relaunch of the 1925 Universal Screen version of Phantom of the Opera.

The music on this recording has been re-edited, remixed and, in some cases, re-recorded in order to reflect the musical spectrum that encompassed the 90 minute epic.

Covering everything from operatic rock to tearful ballads, the recording is a film in itself...without the pictures.

The album features long-time colleagues Chrissie Hammond, Ashley Holt and Ramon Remedios on vocals.

THE MORE I LISTEN TO THIS CD THE BETTER IT SOUNDS AND THE MORE I'M CONVINCED THAT RICK IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGWRITERS OF ALL TIME.

      5 out of 5 stars A Fun Album!.......2001-08-13

This cd features a new soundtrack/songtrack that Rick Wakeman created for the classic horror film, Phantom of the Opera. The film is a silent film, and Rick has created songs and instrumentals to correspond with scenes in the film. If you get a chance to see the film, do so. If not, you can still enjoy this cd. The music is full of energy and fun to listen to -- definitely one of Rick's most upbeat albums. Rick has so many different styles of music that it is hard to classify it, but I would say it resembles music from his albums "Silent Nights" and "Time Machine". Ashley Holt, Chrissie Hammond, and Ramon Remedios supply the vocals, and all three are in top form. I definitely recommend this for all Rick Wakeman fans.

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2001-07-13

Most critics will tell you that 'Phantom Power' is not the right album to go with a 1925 film. I say that if you listen to this CD and watch the movie you will think otherwise. This music enhances the film in many ways: horror, comedy, love, suspense, and drama. A lot of people (myself included) say that Lon Chaney's pantomime performance in this film is like that of a dancer. If that is true, then this music plays fiddle to Chaney's dance as the Phantom of the Opera.

4 out of 5 stars Great album for an underated band.......2000-09-06

This album is one of the best Altered Images compilations yet. It touchs on all the bands albums and includes some rare B-sides. Altered Images was in my opinion one of the greatest bands of the 80's and forever. Clare Grogan's odd but beautiful voice was the trademark of the band. After hearing my first Altered Images album seven years ago I was forever impacted by their music. Highly recommended album, it has a bit of everything that anyone could enjoy. From the punk "Leave Me Alone", to pop "I Could Be Happy", to the dreamy love song "Love to Stay". Oh I'm in bliss!

5 out of 5 stars Altered Images --- Best of the Early 80's.......2000-07-05

Formed in 1979, Claire Grogan brought her little-girl voice to the pop scene with this Glasgow-based band. Altered Images is best known for their hit single Happy Birthday that reach #3 in the UK, but don't let this bubblegum pop song fool you. Their stuff has a far more moodier edge, heavily influenced by producer Steve Severin from Siouxsie and The Banshees. Gems on this collection are: "Day's Wait", "See Those Eyes", "Don't Talk To Me About Love", and the controversial "Dead Pop Stars". The rest of the album deserve a closer listen including the haunting, classic "Bring Me Closer".

      4 out of 5 stars Brown Sugar.......2006-07-22

Surely Johnny EK in his review means Brown Sugar, and not Gimme Shelter!

      1 out of 5 stars Copyright Infringement.......2006-07-13

"Bohemian Like You" is an absolute ripoff of The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter". I heard the first minute of the track and thought it was a remix. The DJ called it "original music". Expect lawsuits.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hooked on this..........2004-03-26

      What an absolutely dynamite track...

Must be on the 50th play of the day - just rattling through my work with this thumping out of my PC...

      FANTASTIC

4 out of 5 stars Very bohemian, actually.......2001-08-21

It's cool. In a kinda dramatic-not-really way. The intro is fantastic, building up in a way you could almost imagine on an Austin Powers soundtrack. Woo-hoo's punctuate the chorus, and there is perhaps an overlay of irony on the whole, but it doesn't really matter if you just take this song as modern day retro sounds for the too cool crowd. However, since that crowd would be too bohemian to actually listen to music with lyrics, everybody else in the world can enjoy this, joining in with that great mainstay of music: all together now, "Woah-ho, Woo!"

5 out of 5 stars The Best Hip Album To Date!.......2004-06-11

These guys have done a lot of great albums, but this one is my all time favourite, with Fully Completely, Road Apples and Up to Here close behind. The Energy is there, the typical obscure lyrics as well as the definitive Canadian content. A classic and must own Canadian record!
