Whatever Craig and Charlie Reid were doing in the six years between Persevere and its predecessor, Hit the Highway, the time wasn't spent developing a radical new sound. Persevere is instantly recognizable as a Proclaimers album, thanks to Charlie Reid's insistent acoustic rhythm guitar, a sparkling lead guitar bringing out the melody, and, foremost, the Reids' utterly unmistakable voices. Even if they'd come back after an absence of decades, it is unlikely that anything remotely like them would have appeared in the interim. The twins show no sign of losing their rare knack for composing memorable melodies with pugnacious lyrics. The best moments of Persevere combine both: witness the exuberant demolition of the British ruling party's values on "Land Fit for Zeroes," the jeering debunking of our celebrity-driven culture of self-pity on "Everybody's a Victim," and the eloquent reconciling of their fierce Scottish patriotism and internationalist politics on "Scotland's Story." 3 out of 5 stars Good But Not their Best.......2006-05-09

In a world full of manufactured pop and forgettable songs, the Proclaimers give a refreshing injection of life into the world of music. Like all Proclaimers albums, this is raw, honest, energetic and sympathetic. Where it fails for me is not in the songwriting as there are some real gems in here but in the production. Edwyn Collins' production seems noisy and gritty and distorts the distinct vocal sounds of the brothers Reid. You will enjoy it and some songs are so tongue in cheek, they will make you smile but the production is a little irritating for me..

5 out of 5 stars Craig and Charlie rock!.......2005-08-29

I bought this CD because I so enjoy The Proclaimers music. "Born Innocent" is another winner. One of the great things about Craig and Charlie Reid is their ability to write some songs that are hilariously sarcastic ("Hate My Love" and "Role Model") and others that are genuinely touching ("He's Just Like Me" and "No Doubt"). This is a must-have whether you already know and love The Proclaimers or just like really good, original music. I wish the group was more popular in the States, but I'll happily settle for purchasing any CDs they release. FYI, I saw them live in San Francisco two or three years ago, and they were great!

4 out of 5 stars Welcome Back!.......2004-05-26

Not that they've been away, but it seems a lifetime since the two time pop sensation I'm Gonna Be stirred my spirit. Sure there's been a couple of discs inbetween but nothing seems to stick quite like the undeniably catchy Hate My Love. In fact their are several tracks that keep me pushing replay. When Charlie cries out "You meant it then..." behind Craig I want to run down the street kissing everyone. This album is a gem amidst the slew of corporate muck that we are inundated with during the first half of the year. Not content being a nostalgic act, they write of mid-life woes and joys yet manage to make it sway. I'm grateful they're grateful.

5 out of 5 stars Well they've done it again.......2004-05-25

Got a copy of this at Proclaimers' recent show in Chicago. This is a band you should never pass on seing live if you get the chance, their shows are consistently great. Initially I was not as impressed with Born Innocent as with Persevere. But while Persevere smacks you like a left hook with its gutsy brilliance, Born Innocent comes across more subtle but more pleasing with each listen. The Proclaimers come across with depth in their witty, poignant commentary on society, relationships etc. and throw in a lively cover of "five o'clock world". Their music never grows stale.

4 out of 5 stars Solid international live album with a gripping title track.......2004-03-19

Born in Scotland and raised on Rock & Roll, The Proclaimers are far from strangers to the international music community. The band centers around twin brothers Craig & Charlie Reed, highlighting their forceful vocal harmonies with acoustic guitar and accordion and drawing influence form traditional melodies. They shout and wail from the bottoms of their souls, vocals intertwining with their intimate connection to the audience. "Born Innocent" is the product of extensively touring Europe in 2003, capturing the Reed's charged live and shows; in London in April and May, and the Glasgow Carling Academy in October. Currently on another international tour, they will be promoting the album in the U.S. and Canada in March and April of 2004. The Proclaimers are known to the first generation of MTV followers as the brothers who wrote "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" in 1987. Brett Lemke

Album Description

The songs on Restless Soul offer lyrics of uncommon honesty and depth and speak eloquently to listeners everywhere. According to Charlie, "When you become specific, you become universal. You write about your own life and make your own observations. People who worry too much about appealing to everybody miss the point. If you write sincerely, and identify with the feelings of other people, you'll catch the ears of people who want to go beyond our accents or our points of view, whether they're inside or outside of Scotland." About the Restless Soul title, Craig adds that it reflects how the Reid brothers see themselves. "I think the song 'Restless Soul' is about myself and other people who can't chill out and just sit back and relax and not worry about the next thing," he says. "The album continues what we have done in the past--traditional song structures and varied subject matter--but the production is slicker," continues Craig before pausing. "I never thought I would have used those words to describe a Proclaimers album. More time was taken over the arrangements and it's a bit more controlled than previous albums."

Restless Soul was recorded in London with producers Mark Wallis and David Ruffy, who have worked with the La's, the Smiths, U2, Talking Heads, Travis, the Go-Betweens, Rooster, the Ruts, Atzec Camera, Sinead O'Connor, Prefab Sprout, and Kirsty McColl. Craig and Charlie said, "We really enjoyed the experience, Mark and David were great to work with. Their technique for making the instruments sound big by recording them at a low volume was new to us and helped us develop as musicians in the studio. The atmosphere was very relaxed and we believe they got the best out of us and the other guys in the band." Joining the Reid brothers on the album are Stevie Christie on keyboards and accordion, Zac Ware on guitars and pedal steel, Ross McFarlane on drums, and Garry John Kane on bass.

I own Sunshine and have been to a live show. Incredible, both. I read the comments here and then listened to the samples. I can say that only one or two didn't grab me right off. I agree the production is a bit overdone, but the songs for the most part (well 20 seconds' worth)are great.

5 out of 5 stars I AM PROCLAIMING.......2006-06-24

PLEASE DO NOT BE PUT OFF THIS PURCHASE BY THE REVIEWS AS I WAS AT FIRST.I DO LIKE THE PROCLAIMERS AND OWN ALL THEIR WORK BUT I FOUND PERSEVERE AND BORN INNOCENT TO HAVE THE GOOD AND THE UGLY,VERY FRUSTRAING.RESTLESS SOUL DOES NOT HAVE ONE SONG ON IT THAT I FEEL SHOULD HAVE BEEN CUT, THEIR FIRST CONSISTANT LP IN YEARS, NO CORNY SONGS THAT SOUND LIKE TV ADD BACKING NUMBERS.GREAT LYRICS WITH FANTASTIC PRODUCTION AND INTERESTING MUSIC.THIS IS THE BEST NEW PURCHASE SINCE I DISCOVERED MARTHA WAINWRIGHT, CANT STOP PLAYING IT, LOVED IT FIRST LISTEN AND CANT GET SICK OF IT.HI PRAISE FROM A VERY CRITICAL REVIEWER.

3 out of 5 stars Good music but over-produced..........2005-10-23

The Proclaimers are one of our favorite duos. We eagerly awaited the release of this album, and went to see them on the release tour. They performed a number of songs from this release and we bought the CD immediately. We anticipated that the songs would sound differently live than on the album, but could not help but be a bit disappointed. The songs are well written and the album isn't bad, just over-produced. The vocals and harmonies that are the Reid's best asset are almost overwhelmed by the instrumentals laid down over the top. Previous recordings had an edge - anger, angst, passion, call it what you will - that is lacking in this most recent effort. The passion and edge were there in their live performance but, unlike previous efforts, failed to make the translation to CD.

4 out of 5 stars It grows and grows........2005-10-12

I am a loyal fan. I have all their cd's and I can be objective. Some are better than others. You already know that Sunshine on Leith is a classic. Born Innocent is close behind. The new one, Restless Soul, is not a hit machine, but it is really, really good. When I first listened to it, I was let down. The songs are a bit deeper, less easily accessible. But that's what makes it worth the money. It's a book compared to a magazine. Takes effort but I rate it behind Sunshine now.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best but even slightly above average Proclaimers is better than most other band's records.......2005-09-24

I'm a huge Proclaimers fan going back to when my friend Robert turned me onto them in 1989 or so. I've noticed that every time they put out a record, at first I'm tempted to call it their worst yet, but every time I listen to it, it gets better.

The Proclaimers have yet to put out a bad effort, but I would put this one in the category of "great" instead of "incredible". It's probably their second worst, behind Hit The Highway. While that may sound like criticism, it's not coming from me. I consider their first two albums, This Is The Story and Sunshine on Leith, along with their 4th and 5th, Persevere and Born Innocent, to be near perfect examples of great songwriting and singing.

The production on this one is a little slick, but after the raw Born Innocent, it's a nice change. The humor is still there, as are the catchy hooks.

In short, pick this one up, and give it 5 or 6 listens before judging it. Soon, you'll be singing along and wanting to see them live, where they really shine! Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars I had to Persevere 7 years for this album, and.............2002-08-07

It was well worth waiting for!! The Proclaimers are the best band I've ever heard, no kidding! These guys write & sing as if they knew me inside & out. I, being American, can relate to everything these Scots put to paper. It shows that music is indeed the universal language. Being their age, I can relate to their joys & sorrows, questions of religion & the need for good, hard-driving, party-down music. The mix of soul, rockabilly & country & folk are made more endearing by the accents of Craig & Charlie Reid. They rock, they make you tear up and they present the perfect alternative to today's dime-a-dozen, techno-tarnished [stuff] that passes off as music. Listen to the songs (lyrics are included to help decipher some of the words) & you'll be hooked. A must have with "Sunshine on Leith" & "Hit the Highway".

I was perusing a music store recently looking for nothing particular. Much to my suprise I happened upon this new album from the Proclaimers who have disappeared for quite some time. A long-time fan, I quickly snapped up the album. After the second playing of the CD, I was very pleased with the album. I've now experienced about 6-7 listenings and can proudly give it my highest recommendation. If you are remotely interested in the Proclaimers, this is a must have album. If you are not familiar with the Proclaimers, this is an excellent introduction.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2001-06-21

'Persereve' made me laugh and cry - it is brilliant. As always, the Proclaimers sing their hearts out and there is something on this album for everyone. (And I loved 'Hit The Highway'!)

    5 out of 5 stars Better late.......2001-06-14

Even though the Proclaimers seem to be on the same album release timetable as Peter Gabriel, it is always well worth the wait. Once again the twins put out a solid top to bottom effort. The best thing about the Proclaimers is they are consistent; they don't try to remake themselves constantly like U2, but instead stick with the formula that made them what they are. That formula is great song writing, powerful vocals, crisp harmonizing and lyrics about women, booze, love and family. If you liked their past efforts, you should buy this disk immediately. I wish the the U.S. would appreciate this group for their greatness, but I'm kind of glad it hasn't; I still get to see them up close in small venues with reasonable ticket prices.

    4 out of 5 stars Talk about a return!.......2001-05-31

I fell in love with these guys many moons ago. Long before that darn song from Benny and Joon. Nevertheless, they deserved the success. The next album was definitely uninspired and qhite honestly forgettable. Well, many years later, without much fanfare or airplay, Persevere is released. I have never wanted this band to make it "too" big, but if they do it from this album I will be thoroughly overjoyed. I think that there is maybe one or two songs that were not instant joy, but the rest of the album is so fresh, fun and full of life, it makes up for the two. They seem to have fully integrated theire country pop folk sensibilities and their clever views on society into some truly fun summer music.

      4 out of 5 stars Role Model........2003-12-03

The Proclaimers fifth cd "Born Innocent" continues to showcase their strong brand of Scottish folk and roll music. The highlights being "Born Innocent", "Should Have Been Loved", "Blood On Your Hands", "He's Just Like Me", "Role Model" and "Dear Deidre". The brothers are at their best on those songs because they make a great mix of folk and uptempo rock music with sometimes insightful and humorous lyrical observations on relationships, politics and religion. The rest of the disc is serviceable, but "Born Innocent" does not surpass previous successes like 1988's "Sunshine On Leith" and 2001's "Persevere". Proclaimers fans should enjoy this one.

          4 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Groovies, Stones, Dylan, Everlys, Paisley.......2004-01-14

Issued in the shadow of their 1983 breakthrough, "Mean Time," this 1984 release never to gained the recognition of its predecessor. And it's a shame, because in some ways, the band seemed more on top of the sounds and styles they brought to bear than they ever had or would. They add inflections of harmony from their early surf and jangle roots to meatier rock `n' roll sounds of mid-period Stones and the latter-day Flamin' Groovies (the latter, no doubt, due to the addition of Groovie Chris Wilson to the band's lineup). Swirl that with a dollop of Dylan and English folk influences and a jigger of psychedelic revival and you have the band's most diverse album to date.

In addition to stirring originals like the electric 12-string opener "Dealing With Today," and the go-go beat of "She Knows," the album picks up on the Paisley Underground sounds of Los Angeles: the harmonica wail and shouted vocal of "Song for Lorraine" are reminiscent of Dan Stuart's work on Green on Red's "Gravity Talks" LP, and "See Her Eyes Again" has the sort of flowing vocal and chiming guitars favored by The Rain Parade. The band's pre-production touring schedule also led them to record a few covers, including a rousing version of Leon Rosselson's politically charged "World Turned Upside Down" (previously covered by Dick Gaughan, and later covered by Billy Bragg), a fine take on The Everly Brothers "Man With Money" and a reading of The Standells' "Barracuda" infused with the sort of energy the band brought to the live stage.

Mau Mau's reissue adds two bonus tracks to the original 13, including the single mix of the power pop gem, "Stolen Heart," and the pop-punk "Laughing at You." Both are worthy additions to the original album, making this CD a real find for mid-80s pop/rock fans.
