5 out of 5 stars Rot 'n' Troll!.......2006-02-18

Finntroll are an amazing group of musicians, and Nattf?d is a truely amazing album. They make some of the most creative metal my ears have ever had the Privilege to listen to. Finntroll's music will never be "popular"; But that dosen't stop them from doing what they do best, A Crazy head-banging trollish polka fest. You wouldn't think that metal and polka (or humppa as they call it over in finland) would fit together so well, but once you listen to what these guys put out you'll soon forget that polka is what your grandparents do on a friday to fill the vast void of space that is the remainder of their lives.

Finntroll has entered my Top 5 favorite bands with un-earthly swiftness. It's all so insanely catchy! From start to finish your foot will be tapping to the beat while wearing a grin, Its not laugh out loud funny, its just grin-because its all so bizarre- funny. The first time I listened to a Finntroll record it took all my willpower not to shove my PC and scattered papers off my desk, hop onto it, and begin the jig to end all jigs. If you have an open mind, and haven't checked these guys out already, DO SO NOW!

Its really too bad that Wilska (the lead singer) was recently "fired" from the band. He had such a great voice for the part. It sucks that he is gone, but im sure the band did what they had to. its good to hear that this hasn't slowed the band down; They've already started searching for a replacement. Finntroll has had a rough time when it comes to their line-up. Their first lead singer Katla had to step down from his vocal duties in finntroll due to some strange vocal chord virus although he still contributes musicly and lyricly to the band. And they're previous guitarist died from an "acholic related falling accident". Not many bands can live through those kinds of issues. I'd give out some of my favorite songs, but honestly, I love them all; you won't find yourself skipping a track on this album! In conclusion, If you haven't checked out Finntroll already, give them a shot. Nattfod is a good a place as any to start listening to one of the most originaly fun bands ever.

If you managed to read this entire review, and didn't feel like kicking me in the teeth after doing so, or found it remotely interesting, appealing, or helpful please take a second out of your busy and important day to press the "yes" button next to "Was this review helpful to you?"

4 out of 5 stars mein Gott!.......2005-12-30

This is my second Finntroll cd and it's far better than Jaktens Tid. This album has a different sound to it so it doesn't sound like a second Jaktens Tid which would be boring. The keyboarding on some of the songs give it a sea chanty feel to it and the guitars are fast and heavy as if they were in a race. Backing vocals shouting out "hey, hey" on some of the tracks gave it more energy. I also enjoyed the bands new growler, his voice has a darkness and heavyness that a band that sings about trolls needs. The only track that I don't really care for and sometimes find myself skipping is the title track other than that all the other tracks are great. My only real problem with this cd is that it's way too short, it's over before you know it. The artwork inside, featuring trolls, is also good to look at.

5 out of 5 stars All Hail The Trolls!!!.......2005-09-24

I bought this album last year and it still is in heavy rotation. If you never heard of this its a mix of humppa (Finnish polka style) and black metal. It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen but its one of the most amazing things you will ever hear!

This album introduces new (and better in my opinion) lead singer Wilska (the older vocalist had to quit due to throat problems). His vocals are more menacing and troll-like, which raises the greatness of this cd.

This album seems to have a more metal feel than previous efforts, but it never loses the sense of outrageous fun of the others. This stuff was made by a bunch of drunken guys and you can definetly down a pint to it! I dont know whether to polka or mosh!

I feel that this is easily their best album, although many would say Jakten's Tid was. But hey, buy them both. Hell buy them all! Finntroll is playing some shows with Sodom in January, so if they're coming to your town, BE THERE! ROT AND TROLL!!!

5 out of 5 stars If polka black/death metal sounds interesting, buy this now........2005-09-22

If it sounds stupid, you'll probably hate it. When I first heard about this band, I was definitely skeptical. But after getting this cd, Finntroll immediately came to be one of my favorite bands. If you've read the other reviews or anything about this band, you'll know they combine polka and metal. One thing that most people don't mention about Nattfodd is that Wilska, the new singer on this album, is fantastic. He's extremely versatile and his black/death singing has a much more brutal snarl in it than Katla, the singer from Jaktens Tid, who had to quit because of throat problems. They are actually quite similar in their singing styles, and, even though Katla did a great job, I think Finntroll is much better with the new singer. Of course, I got Nattfodd before Jaktens Tid, so there might be some bias in my opinion. The only song that I dislike on this album would be nine - "Grottans Barn." It sounds way too much like Metallica. Also, the cd is pretty short, and since it's so good, it seems to fly by in no time. But really, get this if it sounds interesting, and look for any of their other albums, since they're all great.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2005-09-07

I guess I was spoiled by Jaktens Tid. It had everything. I was expecting this one to be similar and in some ways it is. Yet, there seems to be something not quite right. I don't know if it is the lack of the two former members, or what, but it just did not excite me as much as their earlier album. It still has all the touches I came to love from Jaktens Tid, yet the songs seemed a little... how can I say this... dry? I don't know. And that 4th or 5th cut, Trollhammeren (not sure of the spelling), sounds exactly like near the end of Jaktens Tid (maybe the final cut). It may be a rehash but the song titles are all gibberish to me anyway and I don't remember the earlier cut being named Trollhammeren. If I spoke Swedish it might be different, but to tell the truth, I don't listen much to song words anyway, even when they are in English. Maybe it was the first cut that jaded me a little. It started fine enough but just did not develop the way I hoped, not at all like the first cut on Jaktens Tid. This may all sound a little negative but I still like the album. It is just not up to what I expected. For those of you that have never heard them before, you might want to try Jaktens Tid first. Still, for fans of a great and unique band that have developed a voice unlike anything else out there, you can't go wrong with this album! Recommended.

Album Description

Finntroll is a collaborative endeavor by six Finnish metallers that combines elements of extreme metal with traditional Finnish music. The results come to us via the 10-track release Nattfodd (translated into English as nightborn), an inexplicable listening experience that most people have never even dreamt of. Labeled as traditional pagan folk metal, Finntroll's distinct style is brutal yet surprisingly bouncy for something so heavy, as tracks like "Trollhammaren" and "Ursvamp" aptly show. Mixing the old world's melodies with today's crushing metal seems ambitious to say the least, yet Finntroll manages to pull it off without embarrassment or awkwardness. While Nattfodd is discernibly different than most other Finnish metal exports, when it comes to being bruising and foreboding, songs on this disc like "Det Iskalla Trollblod" stand up amongst its peers.

This album was my first experience with Finntroll as I wasn't able to find their music anywhere to try. Since then I have purchased the rest of their albums. I like all of the songs on this album, but Ellytres, Trollhammaren, Det Iskalla Trollblodet and Grottans Barn are my favorites.
Fintroll combines black metal with traditional Finnish folk music. What you are left with is powerful metal guitar and drums, playing songs that are actually kind of catchy and get stuck in your head.
