Warren Zevon has been juxtaposing tender and malevolent sentiments for more than two full decades now. While this collection skews slightly more toward his compassionate side, our Southern California anti-hero (think of him as longtime champion Jackson Browne's troubled cousin) continues to explore twisted psyches with dark humor and rough poetry. Zevon produced this album and plays most of the instruments (guests include Bruce Hornsby and David Lindley), and the spare surroundings opted for here suit the songs just fine. Zevon has long since fallen from the commercial heights he seized briefly in the mid-'70s, but The Mutineer shows he's remains as iconoclastic and engrossing as ever. --Steve Stolder

Love It.......2007-07-13
Yep, imperfect but underrated........2007-01-12
Mutineer can sound somewhat dashed-off because it's under 36 minutes, it's largely solo and the production is minimal. Fair enough. He'd been flying solo with just a piano & guitar for a while anyway, and here there are just a few scattered contributions to back him up. What matters are the songs. While "Rottweiler Blues" does sound tossed-off and the clown song is too dreary (lacking a spot of humor to balance things out), the rest is really stronger than it sounds at first. "Monkey Wash Donkey Rinse" is a sneakily fun staple to complement the wickedly catchy "Seminole Bingo." "The Indifference of Heaven" proves to be a magnificent slow grower after several spins (and so does "Similar to Rain" to a lesser extent). The title track is also more honest & sincere than usual, but that ultimately makes it all the more lovely. Judee Sill's "Jesus Was a Cross Maker" is a weird cover to include, and opinions usually seem to be mixed about it. I for one say it's an excellent inclusion.
Mutineer isn't as big on the dark rapier wit we love so much, and it probably suffers from comparison after being sandwiched between two WZ masterpieces (Mr. Bad Example and Life'll Kill Ya). But once you've covered the high points of the Zevon catalogue and grabbed the ages-overdue CD issue of Stand in the Fire, it'll be time to take another glance here.

One Oar In The Water.......2004-01-16
The best of the rest, "Piano Fighter" and "The Vast Indifference Of Heaven," make for better than average listening. If you are looking for prime Warren Zevon, start with "Genius," "Excitable Boy," "The Wind" or "Sentimental Hygiene."
I've had to buy this twice, it's that good, to me, anyways.......2003-12-03

Product Description
"Where Mockingbirds Roam" is a collection of traditional songs drawing from the folk, blues and old time country music genres. These songs have been rearranged melodically and lyrically so that they are at once modern and faithful to the rich traditions that created them. The album boasts many styles from the moody slave spiritual "Motherless Child" to the wistful storytelling of "Old Joe's Barroom" to the horse-galloping of "Lily of The West." Complete with a few guest musicians of note, this record is the sound of three musicians scratching through the old time sound to produce a collection of songs that reveal the wide and varied beauty of traditional folk music.Customer Reviews:
Traditional Folk Music.......2007-02-11
The songs are selected, arranged and sung by Stuart MacDonald, who has been collecting, learning, and arranging traditional folk music for years.
He is joined by multi-talented stand-up acoustic bassist and harmony singer Rod Pervier. Rod has a wealth of musical experience and is an accomplished musician.
Dick Hodges rounds out the trio with tasteful mandolin, dobro and lead guitar picking. Having played in a wide variety of bands previously, Dick lends his knowledge & varied musical background."
When I listen to it, I picture myself sitting on a porch with friends as they strum their tunes on the mandolin and guitar and croon the traditional folk tunes. We're not talking Carnegie Hall here, just a great folk experience. Very pleasant listening. The voices aren't powerful, but somehow fit the tunes just right.
